  1. Re: I need a name for a society of adventurers

Well there is Real World Society based in the Denver area in the 20's+ Called (still active a bit locally today....):

The Protective Order of Pullmen and Railroad Workers.

Primarily an African American institution, this might not be an "Anyone is game" sort of cup of tea....

people could be hired by the society to investigate and protect their members....?

Still the "Protective Order of Adventurers" or some such combo would work....

  2. Re: How can you feed this many people?

High-Fantasy magic still istn' so common that it replaces technology entirely' date=' and likely never would. For one thing Magic is far easier to mess up then Technology is, you snap a rope on a Balista it can be replaced. [/quote']

Unless the rope snapping kills the entire crew which is possible in some circumstances, and the crew is pretty darn irreplaceable. And you do need just as much skill to probably fix the thing as a magical item of the same level.

Just a bit of a quibble....

just because the D&D maroons place such levels of problems on stuff to keep it under "they must dungeon in a limited fashion" header doesnt mean people should agree with it. This IS the system of SFX is the ultimate difference, not power.

  3. Re: I'll Never Play Pulp

And If you are a player bring the Pulp Heroes to them.

Right now I'm playing an Archeologist/Daredevil in a Mage (White Wolf) Campaign.

And I just pulled off : Swinging down a zipline and landing on a roof it was close to (but not the target zone the line was aimed for) Seconds before the Evil Punk Vampires roasted the Watertower I was in.

Gosh, victory was sweet that day. And I was playing pulp all by myself.

Boy was I embarassed when i realised that I had to doctor up a wounded female character shot twice in the chest..... :Blushes:

Good thing she was my GF IRL and her character seems to be taking a liking to me....

  4. Re: Vampires and Automatons

    Are you daft?

Vampires are one of those npc Major monsters in most games designed to take on plenty of heroes and still look like they will win.

better think about it a bit first.

There are also a few things I personally like to do that cheapens the Vampire a bit (dropping the stupid transform power first) w/o really unbalancing them.

(best argument against the stupid transform power, how many points do you charge humans for being able to have babies?)

I don't give vampires a break on the blood drinking requirement either(costing or saving points), everyone eats, just what it is is a diferent question.

try thinking about vampires as being a secretive cult rather than aliens and you get the idea.

  5. Re: Crazy idea for a magic "system".

I think I have an even weirder idea for a magic system:

    the Magic Hair System.....

All Spells must have the restrainable limitation (someone can remove/pluck the hairs) otherwise build spells to suit. Probaby need a Difficult to Recover limitation on the spell in addition. Since it probably takes weeks to regrow the Magic Hair and that is before you can use the spell at its full power.

this would need a good compromise between Restrainable and Independant.

    but otherwise weird hunh?

  6. Re: Encounter Paradigms

My FH Gm basically sounds like most of you guys. Warn, Live and let die. and having been in a party death situation from said GM (no healing in the party but 8- Churgery Roll, Not good idea.) yeah we should have run. there is plenty of "If you attack the Orcish Army Head on you will die" but you sure as heck can skirmish the heck out of those armies as long as you are bright enough!!!!

in this same campaign 46 PC Class characters took out 800+ FH Zombies with less than 20 people dead (and only NPC's too). and IIRC The Zombies/Skeletons had armor and ranged weapons too to boot.

Not top tem on the fun list.

actually out of a 9000 Zombie Army, probably took out 1000(+/-400) total. Could be off on that though. definately NOT head on colision though. My chartacter barely broke 175 at the time. But teamwork and excellent use of magic made a difference.

  7. Re: Pulp archtypes.

Here is a pair of Era types to play with

Labor Spy: One of the loyal company men trying to keep the unions from breaking the company

Labor Organiser: One of the altruistic men trying to keep the common man from being exploited.

Of course both guys had extremists, and actually the Spys were pretty patriotic if you consider the reps of some of the Labor Organisers was that they were Commies. (Putting such companies as JP Morgan's CF&I [Colorado Fuel and Iron] on the front lines fighting for Capitalism and the USA)

All of this is from just one article in the best kept secret in Colorado, Colorado History Now.

I tried to sell Steve on reading the relevant article from one of the State of Colorado real life articles if he could let me loan it to him rather than trying to copy it. Sadly it didn't work.

One of these days I'll have the time to post my Character: Clayton Rivers AKA: X-10, Labor Spy

  8. Re: Side Effects explanation

If you are a GM you can decide it acts differently.

But it is a case of closing the munchkinny loopholes more than anything else.

besides it doesnt really hurt to take disads just because you want to.

or even add enough mods to make it 30 points worth of disads.

like -20 pre, only in non-scary PRE attacks (-1) or somesuch.

or -2 to PRe Rolls would bring it up to 30 pts disads....

  9. Re: Intelligent multipowers

The REAL answer however is Steve Built a Multipower that "automatically chose the right power" in the G&G (guns/weapons section)book. The rational behind it was 'it was a single "attack"that acted differently upon different targets' exactly what the poster originally stated.

And yes in the wrong hands this could be abusive.

Just like anything else in HERO!

  10. Re: Rep Points?

No, it's far worse than that, Alice: You've finally become "one of the guys."

Perhaps you should adopt a "bouncier" avatar :snicker: or one which displays more cleavage to remind people you're woman? (Don't hurt me!)

    ;)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooh if you add cleavage to an Owl does that make a Harpy?

    :)

PS: Don't Hurt me either! My girlfriend will beat you up and then BEAT ME for starting it!!!!!

  11. Heres a question for both the main researcher(ie Steve) as well as the others out there.

when/what are the breaks between Western Hero, Victorianna Hero and Pulp Hero? I know they are probably in that order but what sort of general dates are we looking at?

(like 1860-1890 WH, 1890-1920 VH, 1920-1930 PH) or should WWI break that up?

if ya don't get me give me a week and ill rephrase.....

  12. Re: Quick NPCs

    *Scratches Head*

wasn't there an online 4th Ed random character generator?

Veddy veddy fast and acclimatable to the needs (ie select fighter, mage, thief, ect... or even random all.)

had a random supers generator too IIRC.

as well as a d6's blast radii scaled by facing (ie all sixes together then fives then so on...) or pure random too if so desired....

  13. Re: Is Hero Fantasy for me?

Other than that' date=' I'd just repeat that the boards here are better than other ones I've been to - the people are helpful and the response from Steve is fantastic - questions are usually answered promptly or directed to the boards for people to put their input in. Like the others I'd just say good luck and welcome aboard. :)[/quote']

One nice thing about the boards is that they arent so large you have to look up all of your posts just to find out who has responded to your posts. And that is only after one day....

You don't really need anything but an idea, the time to build and the main toolkit.

I built a fairly huge and complex world with the above and a bit from 4th plus a few of the posts around here and it was pretty darn nice IMNSHO. This was before the FHonebook or Grimoire so no help there, not that it would have made much difference, I think I LIKED taking the stuff (weapons mostly) from 4th, as well as other things and went with it.

remember, make the choices and give them reasons, rather than arbitrary rules and the players will understand.

Case in point: I have a race that can slip through small openings I make a comment in the main section about why the race likes certain weapons and not others. If a player takes that race, a shield and a 10 foot pole, the character is going to lose them the first time he has to go through a 14" opening. The race has a reason, so the players will too.

  14. Re: Stat Inflation

And your players want to play heroes' date=' so they want to wield common weapons [i']well[/i]. So naturally they buy strength.

Fantasy HERO has a bit of a problem jammed down in the lower end of a representation scale meant for Spiderman, the Hulk, and Superman. There are only five values for strength in the 'normal' range that are functionally different from one another. For heroic characters, HERO is a very low resolution character representation system.

Stength is very important (especially with HERO's ridiculously high strength minima in force). You can't expect people not to buy it at the price. If you won't raise the price, and won't bring in rationing, I am afraid that you are snookered.

The only out I can suggest is to raise the maximum normal strength to 25 or even 30. Otherwise you are going to have to tell you players to adapt tothe truth: STR is nothing very much in HERO System, it is cheap and effective and every combat character has it. If they want to characterise themelves as big strong guys, they will have to shell out for three or five points at double cost.

Well I think some of the problem isn't just with Hero, 1ed AD&D Str meant almost _nothing_ unless you had 8- or 15+ on a typically 3-4d6 bell curve, something like 60+% of rolls weren't spectacular.

Heck most Stats in 1st and 2nd AD&D meant little unless they were supernormal.

And yes it did lead to a wide swath of characters (and items) with supernormal stats

having said that I have a mageish character with 13 Str and 17 Dex, go from 150 points to 200ish(difficult keeping track at the moment) and only ever spend 3 points anywhere on stats to take the 17 Dex to 18, only for the Dex Skill benefits.

IMNSHO Once the Stats are "perfected" for the character most people leave well enough alone and go for other things to buy....

Heck just ask the guys to have one have 20 Str, and the rest have 18, the difference is pretty minimal.

Or even ask the Strong brick of the group go with 23 STR, whilist asking everyone else to go for a 20 Max.

23 Str however is not really worth it, but don't trell them I said that....

and actually Martial Arts with a low dex and high CSL's is a frightning thing.... (trade 20 dex for 11 dex and 9 CSL's w/ Martial Arts....)

  15. Re: Pulp Here and NOW

Well sometimes we all need to step out of the box before the cat is dead...

and to Savinien, If you can get your hands on a copy try checking out some of the Mage the Ascencion stuff (not reccomending the buy option unless you like White Wolf) especially the supplimental book for the Sons of Ether, there is a definate look at the differences between High tech vs Pulp tech and really the ultimate boiling point is a sense of wonder. Less, "clones marching to take over the world" and more "Explore, see and learn"
