That's probably fair. Certainly, Champions Complete intended to be much briefer in its discussion of damage classes and advantages, but I probably got too brief there.  I probably should have included an entry under Adding Damage for considerations when adding damage to an attack with advantages.

I do think, perhaps naively, that many/most folks will extrapolate to the correct answer anyway. In the same way that Advantages "reduce" the number of Damage Classes in the attack, so also do they "reduce" the amount of benefit you get from added damage.

But you're probably right that I shouldn't have left this as something they would have to extrapolate; I should have added at least a sentence or two about it.

This one I think is okay as-is in the book. However, instead of "A character automatically takes 1 STUN for every 1 point of BODY damage that gets through his defenses," perhaps I could have said "A character automatically takes at least 1 STUN for every 1 point of BODY damage that gets through his defenses."

    Hello Mr. Hiemforth,

Thank you for this great product!

1)I think the Damage Classes/Adding Damage (pg. 156-157) section leaves out key information about adding damage to advantaged powers compared to
Hero 6th Edition vol. 1 & 2. Was this intentional for Champions Complete? There is the reference to special active point calculation for Damage Classes but not how this is applied
in Adding Damage, i think if the intention was to keep the rule for adding damage to advantaged powers someone could not deduce it from current text.

    2) Minimum Damage from Injuries (pg.157), without the example, could be misintepreted as this STUN damage is on top of other STUN damage(even if the header states minimum)
if think this could benefit from adding that "if final STUN damage is below final BODY damage" or something similar(forgive me, English is not my native language).

    Thank you,

Hello just some clarifications for presence attacks and one question about starting combat.

    1) When an enemy(or enemies) hesitates and acts after because you have achieved this effect with a PRE attack how do you resolve that? The enemy's DEX or EGO gets yours + 1 for example for this phase? or your DEX or EGO climbs above theirs? i ask these especially on how this interacts with the other combatants.

    2) In the example of 6E2 pg 138 with Arkelos, how Arkelos managed to use his Fire Bolt Spell to initiate a PRE attack before the Giants acting?

and now about starting combat, this connects with question 2 above

Lets say two hostile groups of combatants are verbally threatening each other but noone has started fighting yet, when someone suddenly tries to attack first and is not a surprise attack, does he get to attack first and then everyone othen acts normally on their DEX or normal initiative rules get into play(even he has to wait for his DEX)

    Hello everyone,

As i spend more time playing with the HERO system i find it increasingly difficult to adapt or try to play with another system. I own like 100 system core rulebooks trying all these years to find the holy grail that will bring the right mix of freedom of creation and flexibility on the crunchiness level required for each party but nothing surpasses HERO.
In my current state if i open a new core rulebook its a matter of time until i get to a dead end regarding character option or GM'S options(and being mostly a GM for the last 18 years that's really a problem) also what makes HERO system really exceptional is its support, very few system have an official board for answers, if at all, and keep posting errata even after almost 9 years from their production. The other generic RPGs i have purchased fall apart each with major flaws(expensive, limited depth and power scale, NO support/errata/official board at all(Cypher System). I think once someone embraces HERO it's too difficult to accept the boundaries of other systems even if they come packed with fluff.

Anyone other affected with this syndrome?

Hello, i am playing HERO from 5th edition revised, i am trying to introduce HERO 6th edition to as many RPG players as i can and recently bought Champions and Fantasy complete for 2 of them, they really like the books but my personal opinion is that is very difficult to play/ understand the book without having the 6E1 and 6E2 books nearby.Things like computing damage classes for advantaged power(and why you do so), or adding damage or even minimum damage are so minimally worded and without examples in the complete books that if these are your first and only HERO 6th edition you have to resort to the forums to clarify them or have an INT score of 20+ to work them out on your own(DC,adding damage, missing DC table).its a pity for such a wonderful and loved system as HERO.I hope there will be an errata on them soon.

P.S. otherwise from minimun wording i like the books too and congratulate every HERO product available and the effort of the writers.

I think looking at video games as close relatives isn't without total merit. I wouldn't go overboard, as that's really not a good place for innovation in general (still hell-bent on classes & levels, for example). But regarding character creation, there's certainly a trend towards simplicity and less front-loading. I remember when basically every game required you to create 6 (six!) heroes from scratch, and a wide variety of races and classes was a major selling point. But when games centered more on personal plots, they focused on you creating your own alter ego, with the rest of the party being basically NPCs, cf. Ultima/Baldur's Gate.

And nowadays, it seems we completely ditched character creation in AAA computer games. Maybe you pick a class, but that's about it. The games are still crunchier than a lot of the tabletop RPGs, it just comes later and usually is more structured (ability/perk trees).

There haven't been many attempts to recreate this. I regard D&D's feats system as something similar, as earlier "heartbreakers" often added plenty of class abilities or point-buy talents/advantages, but rarely ones that you can get after character creation. That has changed a lot. But even in more rules-lite games, there's still plenty to before you can slay your first goblin. HERO certainly not being an exception.

But I would say that there are possibilities. We already "break" the strict point buy rules in heroic games (equipment, some magic systems), we could go further. Although this would probably only work with some mechanical support, whether that's a well-made check list, ability/perk cards or a more incremental Hero Designer.
