  1. Re: Phenomenal Cosmic Power... itty bitty rules question To power someone else's power, what about END Reserve UBO? Sure it would have it's limits, but they'd be pretty high. Also instead of the END and REC Inherent, switch that to the END Reserve too (a seperate one). Leave the stat END at zero and just use the END Reserve for everything.
  2. Re: How do you gain in power? I don't know if this will help you, but this is what I thought about when I read your post: Back in my younger days, I was a pretty good basketball player. I remember learning a skill that I carried on to perfect other skills. It went sort of like this. When I was dribbling the ball I learned that if I wanted to fake out the defender, for the majority of the defenders, it didn't matter what my body did, all they cared about was the ball. A lot of them would watch my waist (can't go anywhere without taking your waist with you) when they couldn't see the ball, but if the ball was there, that's what they would focus on. I learned that if I made it look like the ball was going to go right, the defender would shift right. Using this observation, I learned to twist my wrist when I dribbled to put spin on the ball. I would dribble with my right hand and the ball would hit on the right side, defenders would shift right, except when the ball hit the ground the spin I had put on it made the ball shoot left. I just got a new "power". When I wanted to post up (go "low" near the basket), my back would be to the defender so he couldn't see the ball. I used to like to shake my shoulders left (towards center court) but then spin back baseline for a reversal (go under the basket and shoot the opposit side I started on, sort of over my head and behind me). The problem with that, however, is that if they didn't fall for the fake spin, all they had to do was plant their foot on the out of bounds line and my path was cut off. I used the same theory that seeing the ball makes defenders stupid. When I did my fake spin left I would put the ball over my left shoulder. If the defenders had time, or took the time to stop and think for a minute, they'd realize there was NOTHING I could do with the ball over my left shoulder, yet it was enough to convice them to shift that way, leaving the baseline open for an easy reversal. So that one observation, actually opened the door to my achieving MANY new "powers" (there were a few other tricks I learned). Don't know if that means anything or helps in anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.
  3. Re: Ego Attack: What am I missing? Right, figured that out long before I even posted the question. The problem, however, is Steve says there is no modifier to do that. I don't know if you all think I'm just not smart enough to have figured out that a +1/2 or whatever modifier to an EGO attack is the easiest most cost effective way of doing it, so let me put that to rest: Yes I do know it is. HOWEVER, when the question was asked to Steve Long, the reply was there is NO MODIFIER. Which is why I created my work around.
  4. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread.
  5. Re: Need Expert Stat Help: Batgirl III 250pts? Well in that case, I'll do a little more explaining so you can customize a bit more: You'll notice I moved the armor to the cape. This will let you add the OIF limit that the GM can take away without taking away the Secret ID of the character. I've also added an Actvation 14- which better represents an armored cape, but could leave you in a bind if you miss that roll. Best bet is not to get hit (which is why I've raised the DEX). There is a lot you can do with the utility belt, starting with getting rid of it all together. Or if you like the idea you could get rid of the EB, and ditch the AoE on the Flash (and call the flash pepper spray), then add Gliding (cape stiffens with controls from the belt. Without belt cape doesn't glide), maybe a 2" Darkness field with contiuning charges. The Multipower pool could be brought down to 20 active points OIF so would only cost 13points, and most abilities would cost 1point. That would save you some on other skills. I think if I were making the character I would ditch the utility belt and add 2 CSL's +1 w/ combat, only usable vs person made an Analyze check on. +1 w/ combat, only usable vs person made an Analyze check -3 on. So if you make your Analyze check by 3 or more you get to use both CSL's (plus the one that comes from Analyze). If you make it by less than 3 you get the one CSL. This would represent her "reading" of her enemy. Then I'd buy Combat Sense for 15points (can fight in the dark and while blinded). EDIT: Whoops, I thought things were coming out too well. I forgot to add +3DC to her martial arts. That's 12 points you'd have to shave off...or you could always add a 3d6 HA to her utility belt and a Weapons Element to her martial arts
  6. Re: 2 for 1 pt STR - Question It was 75/75, so almost a third of the character was STR.
  7. Re: Need Expert Stat Help: Batgirl III 250pts? Well it seems you've already started, but what I would have suggested if I'd seen this earlier: You END and STUN are through the roof. I'd make STUN 40. For END you only have a 15 STR. That means you'll only use 1 maybe 2 END per phase. That's 12 END a turn (with a 6 SPD) and you have an 11 REC. That means you could go 50 Turns with no extra recoveries. That's a bit much, I'd just leave it at 36 (maybe 40 if you're like me and like round numbers) The rest I would do if I'd need the points (and if I were making the character, I would for the skills I'd want) Drop the EGO to 11 (you still get a 4 ECV with 11 or 13) Drop the BODY to 11 (unless the game was really leathal). This is what I came up with: Gah, templete didn't work: Val Char Cost 15 STR 5 23 DEX 39 18 CON 16 11 BODY 2 18 INT 8 11 EGO 2 13 PRE 3 14 COM 2 5/20 PD 2 5/20 ED 1 5 SPD 17 10 REC 6 36 END 0 40 STUN 12 6" RUN 0 2" SWIM 0 3" LEAP 0 Characteristics Cost: 115 Cost Power END 22 Armored Cape: Armor (15 PD/15 ED) (45 Active Points); OIF (-1/2), Activation Roll 14- (-1/2) 0 27 Utility Belt: Multipower, 40-point reserve, (40 Active Points); OIF (-1/2) 1u 1) Swing Gun: Swinging 20" (20 Active Points); OAF (-1) 2 1u 2) Batarang: Energy Blast 8d6 (40 Active Points); 1 Recoverable Charge (-1 1/4), OAF (-1) [1 rc] 1u 3) Flash Bomb: Sight Group Flash 4d6, Area Of Effect (2" Radius; +1) (40 Active Points); 3 Charges (-1 1/4), IAF (-1/2) [3] 1u 4) Re-Breather: Life Support (Self-Contained Breathing), 1 Continuing Fuel Charge lasting 1 Hour (+0) (10 Active Points); OAF (-1), Nonpersistent (-1/4) [1 cc] Powers Cost: 53 Cost Martial Arts Maneuver Martial Arts 4 1) Atemi Strike: 1/2 Phase, -1 OCV, +1 DCV, 2d6 NND 4 2) Block: 1/2 Phase, +2 OCV, +2 DCV, Block, Abort 4 3) Dodge: 1/2 Phase, -- OCV, +5 DCV, Dodge, Affects All Attacks, Abort 4 4) Knifehand Strike ("chop"): 1/2 Phase, -2 OCV, +0 DCV, HKA 1d6 +1 3 5) Legsweep: 1/2 Phase, +2 OCV, -1 DCV, 4d6 Strike, Target Falls 4 6) Punch/Snap Kick: 1/2 Phase, +0 OCV, +2 DCV, 5d6 Strike 5 7) Side/Spin Kick: 1/2 Phase, -2 OCV, +1 DCV, 7d6 Strike Martial Arts Cost: 28 Cost Skill 3 Scholar 1 1) KS: Karate (2 Active Points) 11- 1 2) KS: Kung-Fu (2 Active Points) 11- 1 3) KS: Tae-Kwon-Do (2 Active Points) 11- 1 4) KS: Tai-Chi (2 Active Points) 11- 3 Acrobatics 14- 5 Analyze: Combat 14- 3 Breakfall 14- 3 Climbing 14- 6 +2 with Martial Maneuvers 3 Computer Programming 13- 3 Concealment 13- 3 Lockpicking 14- 3 Paramedics 13- 3 Security Systems 13- 3 Shadowing 13- 3 Sleight Of Hand 14- 3 Stealth 14- 3 Streetwise 12- Skills Cost: 54 Total Character Cost: 250 -------------------------------------------- Now obviously you could play around with things. Those were just example powers really that I put in the utility belt to show how cheap it could be. The KS: for the martial arts means that if say Kung-Fu and karate both use the Offensive Strike manuver, she can define when she attacks if it will be a Kung-fu style strike or a karate style strike. You can mix and match the KS's with things you think would fit better. Also don't forget that Analyze: Combat will give you "skill levels" if you make your roll by enough. Wish I'd seen this sooner to help ya
  8. Re: 2 for 1 pt STR - Question I have. As I said I was the mutant in Keith "Savage Earth" Curtis' game. I believe it was a 25 STR, and was pretty much the center point of the character (well that and the 4-arms..and only being about 13 years old). The Savage Earth, I would say, is heavily influenced by Edgar Rice Burrows type stories, so it is very light in the armor department (don't see too many people wearing platemail in the middle of a tropical jungle), so encumberence has never been an issue.
  9. Re: Help with a Star Wars type Campaign You do "good deeds" and you start to swing the other way. The down side is of couse if you don't do "evil" things you lose power. Every day you don't do "evil" your power gets lower and lower. The lure is there because your dark side abilities would always be there at full power...for a cost
  10. Re: 2 for 1 pt STR - Question As a former, really good basketball player, squats are THE BEST way to improve verticle leap.
  11. Re: 2 for 1 pt STR - Question I do see what he is saying. In my experience bricks are the least expensive template. A brick can use far fewer points and still not get overshadowed by anyone else. Often times the brick is the powerhouse of the group, able to deal out the most damage and take the most punnishment. Make a Hulk-Like brick where I can use Only in Hero ID -1/4 for a lot of my stats and powers, and a brick can be the biggest damage dealer, the best damage sponge, and still have Batman-like skills.
  12. Re: Ego Attack: What am I missing? Yeah I'm the one trolling. You talk EXCLUSIVELY about EGO attack, and then in the middle of the paragraph full of nothing but pronouns I'm supposed to figure out you've swichted topics? I'd explain how no one can have any idea what the heck you're saying right now, but I'd just be trolling right? Only to the person that wrote it. Actually he must be, because he response told me your build wasn't right before you wrote it...I'm still the troll though right? That has been ruled wrong by Steve. Promise?
  13. Re: Help with a Star Wars type Campaign I like this idea. It makes it more than something the PC's have to RP. Yeah as I've said more aggressive styles will have a larger pull to the dark side, the only thing I can do to keep everyone from dual weilding or Darth Mauling it.
  14. Re: 2 for 1 pt STR - Question I was(am?) the mutant Keith's first post was refering to (well technically I was a Riven, the character I play now is a mutant, but that's not really relevant). The effect it has on Fantasy or heroic games in general, is it makes a narrow gap seem wider. It gives more diversity to characters and helps people specialize and stand out. Sure you're skills can make you stand out from the others, but if STR is 2:1 it's an investment for a 20 STR. It's probably going to be THE defining characteristic of the character the same way as if I spent 20 points on one skill. None of these reasons make sense in a Supers game. Could you do it? Sure. Would it work? Absolutely, but what would it accomplish? Nothing. You have other abilities to define your character where stats are less important. STR just is that big of a deal in supers games. If I were making anything other than a brick, I would ALWAYS have a 10 STR if the cost were 2:1, and I bet a lot of others would too. Which means it would do the opposit of what it does in heroic games.
  15. Re: Ego Attack: What am I missing? Actually no it isn't all that clear. Your use of the pronoun "it" makes it rather confusing. "It isn't too expensive" could me EGO Attack or my power "It isn't too cheap" could also mean EGO Attack again or my power. I took that to mean you were saying "EGO Attack isn't too cheap, EGO Attack isn't too expensive". Then when you add your statement "it really plays out about right." I figured you had to be talking about EGO Attack, because you've never played with my power build. So I had to assume your meaning. No amount of reading would tell me how you were using a pronoun. All that cleared up: You're build is actually the one that's "funky" according to Steve, which is what prompted this whole discussion. According to Steve there is no modifier that will allow you to make an EGO Attack vs. DEX. That's what made me try to find an alternate way of doing it, and discovered the anaomly.
  16. Re: General Hero Question..comepletly new to the system Welcome to Hero. One of the BEST tools for learning how to make a character Hero Designer. This thing is awesome. It's a software program you use to make your characters. All the rules are built right in. I can't reccomend that thing enough.
  17. Re: Help with a Star Wars type Campaign The reason I say style and number, is that website I was reading talked about some of the styles being more agressive than others. Also Vaaspad (yeah right like I could spell that right) the style used by S.L. Jackson's character is said to use the dark side so you have to be really strong in the force not to slip. It also mentioned dual weilding, is a little "darker". That's the "in game" explaination. The REAL reason I'm going to assign HUGE dark side penalties to it, is to keep it rare.
  18. Re: Normal with powered "Friend" Um isn't this the EXACT definition of a slavishly loyal contact?
  19. Okay I was thinking about a campaign based loosely on Star Wars. I say loosely because I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but I do like the whole Jedi thing they had going. What I need help with is the slippage to the dark side. One of the ways I could do this is come up with an abitrary number system, then create all the "light" powers and all the "dark" powers and each dark power pushes them futher to the dark side...Blah. I was looking on a few websites and really liked the idea of the different lightsaber styles. I also like the idea, of if you spent a lot of time learning how to fight, you're not so good at healing, or the subltler arts (may be something I incorperate into the system I can't come up with). If you use two lightsabers or the Darth Maul Lightstaff you're closer to the dark side than someone who uses on lightsaber. Anyone have any ideas for a system to simulate this? I'd rather it not be just GM cavate, but I can't think of any other way.
  20. Re: Ego Attack: What am I missing? Okay there are a couple problems here. First you've given a True/False answer to a multiple choice question. I asked: Is it A or B, you said: No I assume by the last line, you don't think EGO Attack is too much and you don't think EGO attack is too cheap. If you think my build is "funky" the explain how you would do it (which is really the point of the thread) given the rules and and the answer Steve gave. Somene said there are examples in Books, which book? I can't recall any examples of this.
  21. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread. I realize this was back a few hundered pages, but I really liked this picture. When I look at it, you just know he saw the movie Troy and is shouting "Is there no one else? Is there no one else?"...or maybe Rocky "ADRIAN", you decide.
  22. Re: Gps Although if you move in one direction and your Longitude stays the same and your Lattitude goes up, pretty good bet you're headed North, assuming you're north of the equator of course, but that's why there is a N or an S after the Lattitude.
  23. Re: Thrown non-killing weapon I think you're missing the point of the Range Based on STR (or maybe I am), what I think it really is: HKA Ranged +1/2, Range based on STR -1/4 = Range Based on STR +1/4
