  3. Subject to change by PC action Ku Klux Klan much more powerful in the 30s until coup attempt fails, throwing it into discredit. The idea of an "atomic bomb" is abandoned after the Demon Core produces one. World War II lasts a few years longer. Space Race in the fifties. Manhattan abandoned by the United States due to "Dirty Bomb" attack by Nazi transcontinental bomber leads it becoming infested with mutants. Space race leads to first moon landing in the 50s.

  5. I like Skystone's background but you only vaguely hint at what his powers are so I have to give the nod to Doppler.

  8. Reaver: George Temple was nothing more than a barely out of high-school museum security guard until the new acquisition from a battlefield archaeological dig began talking to him, telling him how much power was there for the taking... Since he stole the eerie red sword, he has crossed blades with Jack Riddle, Scarborough Fair and the Brides of Adrian Messenger but so far has managed to retain his link to the sword while working as a super-mercenary. Powers: Bullet and beam deflection, Regeneration of other injuries (but with an accompanying compulsion to draw blood), psychic link to his sword so he always knows where it is and can use it with expert skill, limited precognition, armour piercing melee attack. He also wears some body armour.
  9. Note that almost all of them were Marvel characters. It's important to remember that Silver and Bronze Age Marvel and DC were very different from each other, far more than is presently the case. Silver Age Marvel's team books were much more soapy in their internal character interaction, and Marvel acknowledged the existence of the Cold War much more. DC was also slower to make a complete transition into the Bronze Age.
  10. Here's one weird approach. The court could actually be set up not to be the kangaroo court you'd expect but instead to try both heroes and villains fairly for the violation of rules that don't exist in the conventional legal system. Offenses like "revealing another's secret identity to the public", "killing a disabled foe by means other than a deathtrap", "violating neutral ground". Comic book laws.
  11. Well that was part of the transition period between Silver and Bronze. In the sixties they weren't allowed to get that close.
  12. Actually the critical delineator between Silver and Bronze is the abandonment of the Comics Code. Suddenly people can have drug problems. The Silver Age universe is a setting in which illegal pharmaceutical use does not exist. Neither does political or police corruption. Vampires, werewolves, devils and the walking dead don't exist...as such...but sometimes there are things that are kind of like them.
  13. I find the idea of a "Copper Age" increasingly interesting as a way of distinguishing the time of Watchmen and Crisis on Infinite Earths from the time of Liefeld, Sin City and Image Comics.

  16. This is a fairly standard Turtledove alt-hist, an alternate World War II seen through the eyes of one person from each of a wide variety of combatant nations. I would have given it 3 stars...except I can't get past the premise. It simply doesn't make sense for the French and British to go that far. Yeah, with no Munich Agreement and subsequent betrayal of that agreement I can see the British seriously considering Hess's peace overture and maybe accepting it along with the French. But switching sides and sending troops to help the Germans against the Russians? It just doesn't make sense because they won't be getting anything out of the deal. Suspension of disbelief snapped hard

  20. It's a borderline case. The university is a public institution. It is bound by the first amendment so in principle it can't expel students for what they say. However the university does have the right and responsibility to keep students from being driven out by other students creating a hostile environment for them. You can not for example harass female students out of class by constantly telling them that women have no place in engineering. This situation wasn't as direct as that. The fraternity leaders were "merely" indoctrinating new members of the frat with the idea that they should keep black students out of the fraternity at all costs with some mention of "lynching" as an acceptable alternative to letting them in. It's possible that the hostility they were instilling would never be passed on to black students who weren't actually trying to apply for membership. So personally I'm going with a firm "maybe". An argument can be made but it's not a sure thing in court.
