  1. Re: BOOK OF THE EMPRESS Kickstarter

Not a book I normally would have gotten either' date=' but I'm committing to every Hero Kickstarter.[/quote']

Same here. I don't get a whole lot of the Champions stuff, but I will kick in for the first couple of Kickstarter projects as well.

  2. Re: Swallow whole power anyone?

the 5E Bestiary has rules for swallowing whole and I'm sure the 6E Bestiary does as well. Basically, big creature does a Grab with it's mouth, and if the grabbed creature is small enough, it can be swallowed. Swallowed creature takes damage while inside the other creature.

  3. Re: Hero System Power Cards

Hey' date=' a quick postscript on this for you who are approaching convention season with Power Cards in mind. I've discovered that if you're putting these in the card sleeves, you can stiffen the cards by inserting a normal playing card (or a standard-sized TCG card) in behind the power card. Gives it a much nicer tactile quality as a "card" rather than as a plastic-protected slip of paper, and it adds a little weight that makes it feel a little more solid and durable as well.[/quote']

Have you tried printing them out on cardstock? Just wondering if that'd give the same feel

  4. Re: Hero System Power Cards

Not cardstock' date=' cardsleeves. Look upthread for the link or just look for the trading card games at your FLGS. They're printed on regular paper and super easy to make. Once I get this perfected, I'll post the template for others who are interested.[/quote']

Count me in as being interested!

  5. Re: Stunning enemies (and Dragons too!!)

What my group does when this comes up is to allow the GM to do a spot ruling to keep the game going. Then Either one of the players will look up the correct ruling in the book' date=' or we will wait till the end of the game to look up the correct rule. The only time that we will stop the game for a ruling is if the ruling will change whether a PC will die or not. Also sometimes who ever is the GM will at the beginning of the game announce that any changes to the way we are playing the game. ie "In our last game I ruled that Killing attack stun worked in x way. I have since looked up the rules and found out that I was doing it wrong. From now on we will be doing it the way it is shown in the book. That way is this...."[/quote']

In the (D&D) game I'm currently in, the rules change each session because no one has a complete understanding of all the rules, and we're all forgetfull anyway. ;) No one in the group complains, but then we don't have any rules lawyers in the group.

  6. Re: The Cape - What do you think of it so far?

Hopefully what's left will resolve some things...I hate being left hanging. I will watch it though, when NBC puts it up. I did generally enjoy the show as a "I don't have to think to hard to watch" show and as a "I don't need to see every episode to enjoy" show. While I do enjoy multi-episode; multi-season story arcs, sometimes I just want to sit for an hour with a good romp. Probably the reason I'm always caught up on shows like Castle, but shows like the Event will sit for months.

  7. Re: What 5th Ed Books to buy on sale?

I can definitely recommend Luch Libre Hero (and not just because some of my artwork appears in it). It's an immensely fun read even if you never play in or run a game in that genre.

I'd planned to buy the new Champions Villains PDF when payday rolls around next week, but I think those sale prices on 5th Ed bound books are too good to pass up.

I second the Lucha Libre Hero recommendation.

And I agree the sale prices are too good to pass up. For myself, I'm planning on getting the last 2 Pulp Hero books I need; and maybe a few others (there's very few 5E stuff I don't have, mostly in the Champions and Dark Champions lines).

  8. Re: Do I need the 6th Martial Arts book?

Out here, it's not that easy. You only get final say, if you have players that would stay at your table. Out here, if you don't play D&D then you do get to play much (unless you have a group of folks that you grew up with that were open to experimentation, or even grew up on different games, but those guys already have their gamers).

All of us that meet out here begin our friendships by finding a group, so if you don't know anyone then they don't care what your running; they are looking for the "game" they want, not the DM. But I managed to get into a few groups now, and shown them other systems, Currently I'm running a 2nd ed AD&D game with a guy who last gamed in High school with the 1st ed AD&D stuff, so that's cool, and like I said I've got a Hero game lined up and waiting till folks are a bit more mobile.

When I got here I decided that I was going to be a hard head, and not play any D&D, if the players wanted my games, then they would leave 3.5 and play... But after 3 years... no one would even sit down (other than my wife) to a non 3.5 game. Then once I started giving in, and just playing (no matter the system, I just needed to roll some bloody dice again), then I found some guys who would let me run a game, then I found some who would enjoy getting out of D&D for a bit, and under a different system.

Now guys know me well enough around the table that I can get a game together under "almost" any system I declare, but it's still known in my group, that they can get a game almost anywhere, like now there is 1 3.5 game, 1 4th game, my 2nd ed game (all D&D). And my Hero game is on hold because there are some that won't play it, and have moved on, though have offered to come back if I run a D&D game... Though I've been looking at Pathfinder to mess around with.

I guess it would be better to say that D20 hell is when the opportunity to play a more popular game (more tables) outweighs the effort to learn a new system (Most people in this category, a significant number of the modern roleplayer, barely even know there are other games (IE Borders and Barns and nobles only sell certain gaming companies) more to the point, most is that they actually believe that D&D is the best system out there. Sometimes it can be a rather zealous fervor when even trying to suggest a different game be in their vicinity. I may be over-exaggerating that a tad, but it's near to the way it feels out here sometimes.

I have seen Savage Worlds taking off though recently. Honestly 4th edition seems to have shaken the communities fervor enough to allow quite a bit of experimentation by the core Phoenix gamers... so it's looking good for the future... That's my take on that, I'll stop running my "fingers" off.. as it were.

It helps if you have players that want to play a genre other than fantasy. There's a couple players in the D&D group I'm in that's interested in doing sci-fi, so I offered to setup a campaign, and said we'd be doing HERO.

  9. Re: Do I need the 6th Martial Arts book?

Hmmm. Didn't even think of double checking the Game Book the way the statement was presented.....

Still....HSMA is sounding like a good purchase so far. Provided of course it ever shows up in the stores here in D20 Damnation Alley.

    ~Rex

Yeah, with what I'm reading, I've actually changed my mind, and will pick it up. Also, assuming any stores get it in. Of the three stores in my area, one's always been D20 Land, a second that had very good stock became D20 Land after the D&D 4e release, the third is fairly good on stocking non-D20 stuff, but it took a request from someone else to get them to stock The Ultimate Base (when I picked my copy up, the owner claimed he didn't know it was out). I haven't seen the new Champions in stock, yet, but since it's a bit of a drive for me, I only go in about once a month. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  10. Re: Your "2010" Pet Gaming Projects

These are my goals for 2010:

    1) Continue in a couple D&D 3.5e campaigns

    2) Convert some of those players to HERO

    3) Continue working on my Traveller HERO campaign - this is related to goal #2. Since we have fantasy covered, I said I'd run a sci-fi campaign.

    4) Read through the new Doctor Who RPG and convert to HERO....very low priority, although I might convert some of the stuff into Talents for the Traveller HERO campaign.

  11. Re: Any Star System Mapping Utilities?

    Thanks guys!

Nolgoth, I did find AstroSynthesis and have been evaluating it. I like it, just not sure I'm willing to pay what they're asking. I'll look at some of the other links on the link you posted.

Nyrath, I am doing a Traveller Hero campaign, but I'm using Star Hero's sector generation as I like space being 3D :) I'll have a look at Heavean & Earth, though....looks like the World info stuff might suit my needs.

  12. Re: History: My first HERO character

Oh, yeah! And I still have the character sheet! Just like you, we started with the Champions box set. The character's name was Gospel Singer and had sonic powers built with an Elemental Control. He was kind of a weakling, as I was new to the concept of Character Disadvantages, so I didn't take enough to get the max points allowed (because...why gimp your hero????? :) ). I don't remember any of the other's characters other than one had a Hunted: Viper....and those dudes kept messing us up!

  13. Re: Your Version of FRANKEN-HERO

I'm sticking with 5th edition for my next campaign as I'm more comfortable with it and none of the players have played any edition of HERO. That said, I'll probably drop COM and ECs and bring in Unified Power. And maybe make OCV and DCV characteristics (but still figured) to make it easier have differing values. I'll know more once I get further into 6th.
