  1. I'm surprised a anormal STR versus STR is acceptable here. I'm trying to envision it as me grabbing a mans arm, forcing his hand to his temple (or any of his body parts, for that matter) and pulling the trigger. When guys try that stunt in the movies, unless one is vastly stronger than the other, it takes quite a while to pull off. More time by far than is represented with SPD 3 characters trying to do it in one phase. I would require the attacker to roll quite abit more body than the defender, perhaps 1.5 - 2 times as much.
  2. Originally posted by Supreme They do perform more than 12 actions. That's what gets simulated with the different DCV and OCV ratings, for example. If 3 people shoot at me and I abort to dodge for each, then assuming I succeed I'll have done an amazing amount of body movement in just one segment. Sweep and Autofire are other good examples of this. Basically, we all need to remember that what we see on the board (X moves over here. Y's turn. Y shoots at something over yonder. next segment) is NOT what is happening in the battle we are simulating. EVERY character is ALWAYS moving. Think about it. A speed 4 character with 10" running doesn't move 65 feet in one second, pause for 3, and then move another 65. You get the idea. Sometimes time is just another special effect.
  3. . . . and as soon as you can award players a real life 5d6 optical blast for a mere $30, gamers will be lining up at your door with their real money. (okay, the first thing I buy is "Obscene Amount of Wealth": $15, after that . . .)
  4. I wanted to create a field of darkness that could not only choke energy damage based attacks, it could feed on them and grow. I whipped it up and boy was it expensive! Tell me what you think. Darkness Seeing and Hearing: $15 6†Radius: $50 (Personal Immunity +¼) [Active $81] (No Range -½) Total Cost: $54 Suppress 3d6: $15 (+1¾ Area of Effect, -½ only size of Darkness Field = +1¼) (+½ all Energy Damage based attacks) (-½ Linked to Darkness) (No Range -½) Total Cost $21 Absorb 3d6: $15 +56 point maximum $28 (+1¾ Area of Effect, -½ only size of Darkness Field = +1¼) (+ 0 Rolls Exactly What Suppression Rolls) (-¼ Linked to Suppress) Total Cost $77. Total: $152 A few explanations of what I was thinking. The +0 rolls exactly what suppress does a) eliminates a few dice and makes a good special effect. Only size of Darkness field should be clear. I wanted the absorb and suppress to work over the maximum area possible with the darkness (if max absorption is used? 16") All energy damage based attacks is what I had a hard time with. It's not exactly a special effect, but it covers more than one power (EB, RKA, and even HA and HKA, to name the obvious), so it may be worth more. You tell me.
  5. Does the effect remain if the character is not looking directly at the source of the beam? If it doesn't, that makes this darkness, with the disadvantage "Only on characters looking at the source". A character could try to fight like Jason of the Argonauts (sp?), using a mirror (possibly with a filter) to look at his opponent. -1/2 sounds right. This strikes me as a change environment that alters dexterity rolls, or possibly a field of Supress DEX. Again, either would have the disadvantage "only characters looking at the source" I'd use Metal Illusions over Mental Images. It seems to fit the SFX better (the character feels like he's being boiled alive, but he's really fine.) I'd might also link a NND to it, just for flavor.
  6. I was hoping to get herodom's opinion on a pair of limitations I'm considering. The first is a limitation to simulate supernatural foci that can be used by anyone, provided they have the force of will to use them. I wanted to use FrED's STR MINIMUM TABLE (page 328), replacing STR with EGO. I figured it would be fair, considering it costs more than STR does. BTW, could this be used in a superheroic campaign if the limitation were reduced (i.e. EGO Min 15-17 = -1/4)? Probably not, since heroic characters buy and find equipment, rather than aquire it with points. The second was for Invisiblity (only with the No Fringe adder) -1/4 Bright Ego Fringe. No fringe means even at a range of 1" he cannot be seen. Bright EGO Fringe means an EGO roll can be used to see the character at a range of 8" or less. (It's to simulate an 'imaginary friend', who can only be seen by others who have the faith to do so.) Since I'm requireing a characteristic other than PER, should the range be increased? I'd lower it, but that obviously can't happen.
  7. Sounds good to me. I also like the required INT roll, with some extra modifiers if your character is reacting to anything really unexpected. (GM)Okay, your the evil sorcerer just cast your character into another dimension. You'll have to try to survive until we can save you. Out of the many he had access to, he sent you to a plane specifially designed to imprision orcs. (Player One) Using my VPP, I smash a vial of powerful orc repellent on the floor. (GM) Remember, you had no prior knowledge of this sorcerer before you met him, and the encounter didn't take place anywhere near orc-country. If you try it, you'll have a -4 on your INT roll. (Player One) *thinks* How about donning a cloak of invisibilty? (GM) Sure, that's pretty basic. I'll even give you a +1 modifier (Player One) *annoyed* How generouse

  9. It's worth mentioning I don't know if it matters, but in addition to showing less curve (and I know few men who like that) 2d10's generate a number between 2 and 20 instead of 3 and 18. That means the "hump" of the probability curve for 2d10 is on the 11, wheras on 3d6 it's on 10.5. In laymans terms, 2d10's will usually roll higher than 3d6 (not much, but it may be something that needs to be addressed.) Besides, d6's are cheaper. I might be interested in using d10's to calculate damage. let's see, if 5 points gets me a d6 worth of damage, 8 points sounds right for a d10 (5/6)*10=8.333 Hmmmmm, that does sound good. Lets see what happens If I carry this idea a little further. . . 1d4 = 3.333 1d6 = 5 1d8 = 6.667 1d10 = 8.333 1d12 = 10 1d20 = 16.667 1d100 = 83.333 Thought's?
  10. If it costs X points one way . . . I agree that Running for a speedster is more elegant. I'm seeing something odd here though. If I buy Flight (Only in contact with surfaces -1/4) (No turn Radius +1/4) it costs 2 points an inch. If I buy Running (+1/4 up any surface) it costs 2.5 an inch. As far as I can tell, the two powers do exactly the same things. This leads me to ask "Where does it say that No turn radius is only a +1/4 advantage?" FrED does list "Turn mode" as a -1/4 limitation for movement powers that don't already have it (p. 85). I don't think that necessarily means having no turn mode is just +1/4. If it's a +1/2 advantage it costs 2.4 an inch. Again, Running with the +1/4 up anything advantage was 2.5, but the difference is small enough to be endured. Look at killing attacks to see what I mean. HKA's aren't ranged. RKA's don't get a STR bonus. Those are the only differences that I know of. When you add range to HKA and STR bonuses to RKA, they are fairly well Identical, and cost the same either way. I just see it as a way to make sure everything stays balanced
  11. It's all so clear now Excellent post, Hugh. That makes sense. Followers have to pay extra for any points exceeding those of the main character, but disadvantages can offset their cost a little. Summoned beings can go as high as you please and retain the 1/5 cost, but their disadvantages are just there 'cuz the GM said so. My universe makes sense once more.
  12. Why does using disadvantage points (up to the campaing limit)offset the cost of buying Followers, Bases, and Vehicles, but does not for Duplicates, Multiforms and (most of all) Summons? I'm sure there's a good reason behind it, but I can't see it yet, so humor me. It seems odd that if I want to buy a motorcycle I can slap on a few disadvantage points (okay, I don't know what disadvantages those would be, but I'm sure there are some) and reduce the cost of it a little. But, If I want the cool Tron motorcycle that just appears around me when I strike a pose, I can't. It just seems to me that the Disadvantage points are there because they make any character with them more interesting to play. If there's no advantage to using them, players feel no motivation to put them on their characters (Summoning a 500 point fire demon is fun, even if he has disadvantages. But if a Demon with no disadvantages cost's the same . . .) One more question. Can I put the Transdimensional advantage on a follower to make it more Summon-like? I.E., I just call, and my follower appears out of nowhere.
  13. I was a amused by the superpower of knowing everything they built that "John Doe" show around. Here's how I saw it: Knowledge (all knowledge that isn't secret or otherwise un-knowable) 30- (cost $2 for an 11- plus $19 to make it 30- = $21) That's based on the bit in the skills section that says doing any truly incredible stunt is a 10 modifier. Still, $21 seems dirt cheap for the usefulness of the power. Should I buy the thing seperately for Area knowledge, People knowledge, Etc. ?
  14. I'd use an environmental effect. FREd listed one example as "Flowers Blossom around you" or some such thing. It specified they'd whither quickly unless something else could keep them alive, but since this is an area where the same foliage once did reasonably well, I think it'd take. Unless there was a toxic waste spill or some such thing, which would impede future growth. Maybe summon would work. Hmmmmm, that actually seems like a good Idea. transform would be irrationally expensive, I think. Especially for such a large area. It would work too, though. Dimensional transport would be a cheat IMO, but you could do it. Just take yourself (and buddies) to a world where everything was the same, except there were trees there. Dimensional transport had a bit on "Wish Granting" that worked that way. Aid to recover would work.
  15. Voltron! I was trying to remember that name. Thank you. Glad to see I'm not to far off base. And yes, this would really only work if you had a dependable bunch of players. Although it would be funny to see the super robot fighting with one arm . . . Actually if it was that important I'd just turn the character into an NPC temporarily.
  16. Say a group of players all want to share a resource or power. Would they simply divide the power by the number of players and everybody pays that many points? Examples of what I'm talking about could be: 5 transformers can each transform into 1 vehicle, but can also combine to create a much larger and more powerful robot. The planateers can summon captain planet, but they have to act together. (and no, I don't watch that show) The characters want to be the command staff of a large starship & crew. And no, I don't think the Captain should have to pay for all of it. Mighty sorcerers join hands to use their variable power pools as one. Just a thought that came to me the other day. maybe they could just take a limitation "only when everybody else chips in" . . .
  17. As I recall, when Xavier put on that shiney headpiece he basically megascaled a few of his powers (he claims it takes them to the thousandth power). I was wondering how you would do this. The character I'm tinkering with is a weapon of mass destruction. He was sent to observe humanity over the course of seven generations and then decide whether to give them vast alien knowledge or obliterate them. Six generations have gone by, and he feels torn, and decides to try to nudge humanity along (by joining a superhero team, of course). He has a vehicle in orbit that megascales his teleport, clairsentience, and telepathy. I was considering just figuring out what his powers would be when megascaled and doing a vehicle thing based on that. Suggestions?
  18. My PC is the ghost of a civil war soldier. I wanted to give him a supernatural "Rebel Yell". Now, I think the best way to do that was with a Drain against Presence. Anyway, Drain has no range, the modifier to apply ECV says it is unaffected by range and works on line of sight. Do I have to buy "Ranged", or does ECV do that for me?
  19. Jack, an invisible, superstrong character is the imaginary friend of his Normal Dependant NPC, Jill. Consequently, we needed to whip up a disadvantage, but I have no Idea which to use to replicate the following effect: If jill recieves BODY or STUN damage, he automatically recieves the same. If her INT or EGO levels are lowered, his are by the same amount. He is only present in the real world when she is awake. He may never be more than 60 game inches away from her. I called it a 25 pt physical disadvantage.
