We knew it was coming. I'm just surprised they talked so long.

That is one badass tree. The ground falls out from under it, and it refuses to go down.

Well at least that's still fish. It's not like they are trying to sell pig rectum as imitation calamari.I'd be upset that my calamari isn't calamari, but it's not like I haven't eaten natural sausage casings before. Prefer natural casings for that matter.

Re: "Neat" Pictures
Hmm...let's see...I've lived in Shasta, Tule, Big Thicket, Phoenix, and Tidewater. Not sure exactly whether I lived in Washington or Susquehanna, and not sure about Blue Ridge or Shenandoah.
The 50 US states, Redistricted to have roughly equivalent population. Even the names are fun! Though I do wish the artist had included a zoomed in map of the area around New York. Them is some tiny states.(also, the people I knew in Billings would sooner go drink mining pond runoff than be governed from Salt Lake. Just saying)

Re: Using Hero System for Zombie Survival Horror
The first issue can be resolved (or at least partially resolved) by giving the zombies a Complication to the effect that they are always "out of combat" for DCV purposes. That would put them at half DCV for all attacks, and halve the penalty for called shots. A head shot would still be -4, but that's a lot easier to deal with than -8.
For the second, I would build the zombie bite with "must follow grab", giving the characters at least one extra phase to take out the zombie when they're about to be bitten. Making the bite do minimal damage would help, as leather jackets, boots, and gloves become viable armor, and you could even limit the bite by saying it only penetrates heavy cloth (like denim) on an 11- check. Human teeth aren't really the best for chomping through anything tougher than slightly unripe fruit.

Re: Genre-crossover nightmares
I seem to have touched a nerve' date=' here. And yeah, there was a time I would have said the same thing. (Actually I said worse things!) But then I got dragged, not quite kicking and screaming, to one of my class reunions, and found out all the kids I hated had turned out okay after all.[/quote']Yeah, teenagers can be cliquish asses. I realized that people are people by the end of my freshman year of college, and dropped any grudges I was carrying.

Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it...
I wondered the same thing. First, let me say how impressed I am by the movie translation. It's very faithful to the book, as much as a movie like this can be, I think. Still, the book has a lot of very important details that didn't quite come across in the movie, like true relationships and background.Spoiled, of course...
Briefly, Catching Fire starts with Katniss and Peeta attempting to return to their lives in District 12. As winners, they are bound to go on a Victory Tour, though, extending their tenure as toys of The Capitol. President Snow is very upset with them, especially Katniss, for their little stunt in the games with the berries has made them look bad, and it turns out to be the unwitting spark of rebellion in the districts. As an attempt to quell such thoughts, the next year's Hunger Games is very special: all participants will be drawn from previous victors! Since District 12 only has three victors ever, Katniss, the only female victor, is guaranteed to go back in. Final part of the book is the Games and we get to meet many of the previous victors, including an 80 year old woman who has been selected.
Mockingjay is the story of the new rebellion. Katniss has been rescued from the arena by the rebels from District 13 (which, you may recall, was supposed to be devastated and unlivable). We find that the rebellion is huge, every district is fighting back against The Capitol, and they need Katniss to become their symbol, a role she didn't realize she had already adopted just by being herself in the games.
Cool, thanks.
My daughter got all three books on Kindle and burned through the first one in less than 24 hours. They sound interesting enough that I'll definitely have to give them a go.

Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it...
I've only seen the movie, but I have to ask: what are the other two books about? The first one seems to wrap up the whole Hunger Games storyline, and it seems unlikely that the same characters would compete in the next year's games. That pretty much leaves a whole world of story possibilities.

Re: "Neat" Pictures
I looked up the 100 biggest US cities in 1880, and it's not there at all. Can't be gold rush. Probably has a lot to do with military bases there.

And once again' date=' the eighth largest city in the United States gets dissed in favor of number fourteen San Fransisco...[/quote']The map says it's the US in the late 1800s. San Diego wasn't anywhere near as big back then.

I hope that's a pink bottle and not a clear one. I think bacon-doughnut ale still sounds better than pepto-bismol ale.

Re: "Neat" Pictures
Yeah, bullets don't throw people...that's Hollywood BS. I'm just talking about tipping someone backwards rather than the natural tendency to fall forwards. That probably wouldn't require a whole lot of energy transfer to pull it off. The next time I have access to a corpse, or at least someone so unconscious that picking them up and dropping them won't wake them up, I'll experiment and post my results here.

Re: "Neat" Pictures
What did Mythbusters say? Because I've been active duty for 15 years, and I've seen a lot of people pass out in a lot of ceremonies that shouldn't be happening on such a hot day, and they all fell forward.
-
Re: "Neat" Pictures
People tend to fall forward when they lose consciousness, but a bullet pushing backward at head level would probably alter that tendency, I would think.

Cool stuff. And that Sodom and Gomorrah theory is damn interesting stuff.
I will, once again, recommend The Lost City of Z by David Grann for anyone interested in real-life pulp style adventure.
