  1. P.S. - I seriously doubt this post will be approved by a Moderator because they are afraid.

Let's start with the end, shall we?  I'm always somewhat mystified at the thought process behind someone new coming in and trying to pick a fight with the moderators of a site.  Do you really think that will end well for you?  Do you think that you'll look like a hero, standing up to the Powers That Be? In the interests of your own longevity on this site, I would strongly recommend losing the attitude.

I am not in any way connected with the company, but allow me to second Simon's advice.  In my humble opinion, this is probably the best community on the internet, and certainly the best one I've ever found.  There are people here that will help you through thick and thin, who will have your back no matter what.  Even the person who turned out to be a notorious Catfish would stay on line and talk me down for hours when I would wake up screaming at 3 AM.  This is where would come to vent when my late partner was in chemotherapy.  And the best way to fit in with some of the absolutely best people I have never met is not to come in with a chip on your shoulder.  In the words of Lois McMaster Bujold, "Some kinds of stupid you don't have to be."

Having said that, yeah, I liked the Big Blue Book.  There were some things in 5th I didn't like, some things in 6th.  But on balance there was a lot more that I did like!  So yes, over decades of play some powers were found to be entirely too cost effective, others totally broken. Challenge should not be can you build the characters with the same points, but can you build the characters with the new guidelines?  In some cases it's going to be "no,"  but I've found in most cases it's yes.

  2.  (and quite by accident, our system at this time is just about spang on the midplane).

In the longer view of things, how inclined is Sol's orbit to the mid-plane?  Do we stay somewhat close to it, or at the extremes are we really far above/below it?

  3. Could you build it as a naked Power Advantage, with Limitations?

    Thus:

Multimissile Spell:  Autofire (2 shots; +1/4) for up to 40 Active Points of a single missile attack, Time Limit (5 Minutes; +1) (20 Active Points); 1 Recoverable Charge (-1 1/4), Requires A Death Rune Affinity Roll (Skill roll; -1/2), Incantations (-1/4)

Yeah, I think autofire is the way to go here.   That you fire a single arrow that becomes multiple arrows in flight is a special effect.

  4. Who would win? Wonder Woman vs. Valkyrie?

I'm going to give that to Diana, but I could see it going the other way.

Just for fun. Who would win, Punisher or Aquaman?

Depends on venue.  Aquaman unless fight takes place in the middle of the Sahara.

  5. Re: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

    That's not strictly true.

Percy's mom killed monsters with a shotgun, Paul used a golf club I think.

    .

    CES

OK, finally got around to re-reading The Last Olympian. Sally, Percy's Mom, could see through the Mist, attacked monsters with a shot gun. Implication was the were Knocked Back and killed by falling on Celestial Bronze weapons, not by the shotgun itself. Paul, her mortal boyfriend, had a borrowed Celestial Bronze sword and KS: fencing. He relied on Percy's assurance that anyone he could kill with that sword was a monster, he saw only their Mist supplied mortal human guises.

"Why so can I, or so can any man; But will they come when you do call for them?"

Thread Necromancy: With Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters coming out next month, thought this might be topical again. Anyone gamed in the Riordan universe and have tips they wanted to share?

  7. Re: Sliders

OK, I've been thinking a lot on how our world would be different if the majority of the people were left-handed instead of right handed.

At first, I was thinking that the gear shift on a car would be on the left side. And if the gear shift is on the left side then perhaps the gas pedal would be on the left and even the driver's seat would be on the right of the car so that the radio is easily accessible by the left hand.

This may mean that we would drive on the left side of the road (like in England) thus making left hand turns easier than right ones.

The standard keyboard on a computer would have the 10-key on the left side, and it is possible that the letters (placed for “convenience” with qwerty) would be the opposite with qwerty on the right hand instead of the left.

And if the car is “backwards” and the keyboard is “backwards”, where would the differences end? Scissors would be hard to use, as would manual can openers. Door handles would be on the right instead of the left. And my older brother was “forced” to use his right hand instead of his left hand when he was in first grade. (It was 1966 when he was in school)

So, in order to make this game more “thrilling”, we could bring that “forced” mentality forward. Thus being right-handed would be illegal. And thus, they would have to conform or be hunted.

Um, I'm finding half the door knobs to the left, the other half to the right. As a further inconstancy, I will go in a door with the knob on the left, then when I start to go out the same door some SOB has moved the knob to the right!

The key placement on the qwerty keyboard was the opposite of convenience, it was designed to slow down the typewriter (as both machine and operator were called at the time). If you want efficient you go to a Dvorak keyboard. Maybe the qwerty keyboard is the only thing that hasn't changed? Thought the number pad might be on either side. Biggest adaptation my partner had to make going over to a computer was learning to use the number pad right handed. He use to do ledgers 10-keying with his left hand, his pencil in his right.

  8. Re: Most PCs...

... do not need a Multi-Power. And most players should not have a VPP.

I'm thinking of adding those lines to my set of campaign character creation guidelines. I fully expect hilarity to ensue.

Seems like every PC & campaign setting book NPC has a multi-power of VPP, and many have both. Maybe I'm just too old school, but I remember when they were rare.

    Thoughts?

Looks like I'm late to the party.

I disagree. If the objective is to simulate the source material, I maintain that most published characters have either a VPP, or a Power Stunts skill. I defy you to read 12 consecutive issues of a title and not see a character using their power in a way they never did before, and often in a way they never did again.

  9. Re: Sliders

One other I want to mention, Humanoid World, inspired by Jack Williamson's Humanoid novels. The Earth is overrun by polite, helpful robots who will not let humans do anything remotely risky. "Rent a car? No need, Sir, a humanoid will drive you anywhere you want to go. Now that humans no longer drive we have totally eliminated traffic accidents. Sports? We've developed games that let you get exercise and have fun without the risk of humans running into each other or getting hit by balls. Travel between worlds? I am so sorry Sir, but we cannot allow that, some of those other worlds will be hostile. We will need to keep you here for your own good. We would prefer to do that without medicating you." Ultimate Nanny state.

  10. Re: Sliders

I would also like ideas of small differences. Ones you may not be so very obvious at first. So' date=' when the team is tired, they have a place to rest, until....[/quote']

. . . they notice the Azure Gate Bridge.

Might track down a 4th ed supplement, Champions in 3D, looks like there are about half a dozen on e-Bay. It gave one-page treatments to several alternative worlds.

Pick any conflict and reverse the outcome.

Nazi World - Axis won WWII

Dixie World - Confederacy won American Civil War

Dixie World A - North America Balkinized, the United States and Confederate States still exist, but so do the Republics of Texas and California, the Empire of Louisiana, and the Free State of Quebec.

Dixie World B - The CSA went on to conquer the USA.

Brit World - The American Revolution was crushed, and the Queen of England is the absolute monarch of the World

Spanish World - the Armada successfully invaded England, Spanish is the official language of the Americas.

Aztec World - the indigenous Americans successfully resisted the Conquistadors.

    You get the idea.

    A couple of others.

Cold War World - Berlin Wall never fell, USSR never broke up, USA and USSR still rattling missiles at each other. The PC's sure ask a lot of questions, they must be Commie spies.

Red Dawn World - USA invaded by USSR (or PRC) within the last generation. Lots of insurgent resistance.

  11. Re: Welcome to the Silver Screen

Millennium did stunt work in the movies before he hit the Big Time as a Hero. No changes necessary for his story.

Cheeta, other than his Secret ID, is an adequate anti-hero. No changes.

For some reason I cringe when I think of a Snow Leopard movie, that it would turn out like CINO, a strong independent woman of color turned into a whiny emo biatch. No deal unless she gets script and final edit approval.

Dolphin, they would probably make him straight.

  12. Re: May I Draw Your Champion?

Dolphin. Human model Dave Draper, Dolphin (Michael Steelman) is two meters tall, slightly over 150 kilos, and just under 10% body fat. Well muscled without being as ripped as a modern bodybuilder. He is a blue eyed blond with sun-bronzed skin. He doesn't need to wear clothing for protection, and doesn't fully grok it as decoration, so whenever socially acceptable he wears only a Speedo. Even when otherwise fully clothed he will be barefoot if possible. He has a public ID, and never wears a mask. He has moderate super strength and exceptional defenses.

He has the Nietzsche mutation, what doesn't kill him makes him stronger. His parents are marine biologists, as a toddler he learned he could free-dive deeper and stay down longer than they could with full scuba gear. Spending time at great depths is probably what lead to his super strength. In college he fell in love with a telepath. Not psychic himself, he likes to hang out with mentalists. "You can't lie to them, so it encourages you to be open and honest." Naively, he believes the telepaths will extend the same honesty to him.

Though he cannot be hurt, he is very aware that others can be. He has an absolute Code vs Killing. In combat he tends to go for disarms and holds rather than all out attacks. If he must punch, he will pull. He is a Buddhist and an environmentalist. He doesn't need to eat, but if he does eat it will be vegan. Quote: "I'm not a super hero! I'm a marine biologist who's friends keep getting razzled by super villains!"
