  1. Re: How many different ways to mitigate damage? <boredom caution: metagaming be here> Yes, Blocking and Missile Deflection are my current faves with my shield-slinger. There's also not getting hit: so high DCV, lots of dodging, diving for cover, etc. Of course being Desolid....
  2. Re: teen champons geeks vs jocks kung fu version I think it really depend on how he carries himself. If he's inward-looking, he would probably end up with the geeks. But if he's confident, outgoing, etc. he could very well end up in any group. Sometimes the jock group is specifically reserved for the school sport (or at least the one that's deemed the major sport). At my high school this was football, even though we also had tennis, wrestling, and volleyball. I would really boil it down to the kid rather than the martial art. If he's like the Karate Kid, then geek. Hell, he could be one of the popular kids if he's good looking and confident. It's all about who he is. And that doesn't discount who he wants to hang out with, as well.
  3. Re: A montage of El Santo clips I grew up in Los Angeles and when I was a kid, the Spanish-language channel used to run Lucha Libre peliculas (movies) on Saturday afternoons. El Santo, Mil Mascaras, El Diablo Azul, etc. No subtitles, but hey, you really didn't need them. I think my favorite Santo movie is Santo contra Las Mujeres Vampiro. That really is a clasic.
  4. Re: DC limitations DC is based on how many points in the attack, e.g. 12d6 EB is 12 DC, or 5d6 KA is 15 DC. It doesn't include any Advantages. That's where Active Points come in. You could have a cap of say 12 DC, but have an Active Point cap of 80 (which would allow for up to 16DC). See pg. 403 of 5ER for a full explanation. Depending on your Active Point cap though (if you have one), he's got attacks at 97 points: 40 STR 20 0 END on STR 37 Multipower slots -- 97 This might be too high (it would be in my game).
  5. Re: Missile Deflect A Big Thrown Object Well, I would have to ask how his Missile Deflection was defined. It really is about effect, not power. Since he's a brick, it seems he could be able to bat away the container (given enough STR, naturally). I think something in the environment COULD be defined as an AoE attack against some characters, but not for others.
  6. Re: Double Ended Weapons Hmm, a quarterstaff is a double-ended weapon, and I don't really see it being built with extra levels or special considerations. If the system had a "readying" mechanic, I might say you could ready the weapon faster since you can use either end to strike with. I suppose you could add an extra OCV level or two to reflect the speed with which you can ostensibly strike.... In the case of pointy (or energy) weapons, you have something nasty pointing back in your direction. There isn't anything other than Side Effect that I can think of that would reflect your ability to gut yourself if you botch your attack or someone uses your own weapon's proximity to you against you.
  7. Re: Daredevil-like senses and PER Mods The only problem with this logic is that when I'm wanting to play a DD-like character, I don't want reality. I want comic book reality, and I want to be able to have the powers that I need to get me the ability to hear the cry of help across New York City. That's what happens in the comic book. That's the reason I like playing comic book supers, to have abilities far outside the reality of real existence. I know that so often the real world creeps into explaining or understanding comic book physics, but there comes a point where it's rather immaterial--just give me the super power!
  8. Re: Detecting with multiple senses I would probably just chalk it up to SFX. If you state that your character has electrical powers then there are natural environmental factors that will work for and against that SFX. Same for the multiple sense-based Detect. Since it's effect were working from, I'm not sure you really need to go there. You say you Lie Detector works off of Sight, Hearing, and "ranged" touch (sensing the heat from someone's body), etc. You get Flashed, then naturally I might say your X detection component is knocked out. OTOH, Detect is not very grainy, so I'm also not opposed to this idea at all. And since most, if not all, other senses are based on Detect, it wouldn't hurt at all to have a whole host of new options for Detect.
  9. Re: continuing charges alternatives I'm not sure that actually IS the designed intent. One charge is simply one charge. Spending END is spending END. They don't necessarily have to be synonymous or even comparatively equal. IIRC, a +1/2 Advantage with Charges gets you 64 of them. For the same Advantage you get 0 END. The latter clearly is the better deal. But it depends on what effect you're after/trying to simulate.
  10. Re: Jungle Character - Summon Animals, Transfixing Gaze Buy Followers. I've always felt Summon was too expensive.
  11. Re: Jungle Character - Summon Animals, Transfixing Gaze Buy enough animals to summon at your max. You can always summon less, or summon a less powerul creature. Note that I also put Limitations on the Summon. If you're creating them from thin air, then remove those Lims because they require that the animals are native to your environment and the GM might make them take a little to show up (arrive under own power). Duplication is not an applicable power here since it would be YOU who would be Duplicating. There's also the related power of Multiform, and that would be where, say, you turned into an animal.
  12. Re: Autofire disarm If you were going to go this way, wouldn't you also need Skipover Autofire? I don't see the baddies lining up all nice and neat for you. Using Rapid Fire is the way to go, IMO. Buy some 2-point skill levels to compensate for the OCV penalties 16 Peerless Marksman: +8 with Rapid Fire OCV Penalties You could then attack up to 5 people per Phase without penalty.
  13. Re: Jungle Character - Summon Animals, Transfixing Gaze Here's a quote from the Expanded Class Advantage of Summon from page 225 of 5ER: If the Summoner can Summon more than one being at a time, every being Summoned doesn’t have to be of the same type if the Summoner can Summon from an Expanded Class. For example, a spell to conjure 128 lesser demons doesn’t have to Summon only imps at any one time — it could conjure a mixed horde of imps, firelings, scratchets, and similar fiends. Similarly, the character could vary the Summoned creatures slightly, to provide individuality, but the variations must balance in terms of Character Points. For example, one demon could be slightly stronger, but also slightly stupider (+3 STR, -3 INT); another could be quicker but weaker (+2 DEX, -2 STR, -2 CON). The GM must approve all such variations So I think this would cover what you're looking for. 45 Lord of the Animals: Summon 16 200-point Animals, Expanded Class of Beings Limited Group (Animals; +1/2) (90 Active Points); Arrives Under Own Power (-1/2), Summoned Being Must Inhabit Locale (-1/2) For the Transfixing Gaze, the only problem I see with a PRE attack is that it's not necessarily long lasting. You could maybe get someone to hesitate, but certainly not remain in place while you hold their gaze. Or to do this, you'd just need bags of PRE dice--probably must cheaper and more reliable to go with Mind Control with the Set Effect. 20 Transfixing Gaze: Mind Control 10d6 (Human class of minds) (50 Active Points); Eye Contact Required (Constant Power requires eye contact throughout use; -1), Set Effect (Stand Still and Look at Me; -1/2)
  14. Re: Daredevil-like senses and PER Mods I don't disagree with you at all. I was just copying the power from the UNTIL SPDB. Which now that I looked at it again, says Detect Spoken Falsehood (Hearing Group) at INT+2 for 5 points. I kind of always felt this was too cheap. So maybe something like this: 15 Human Lie Detector: Detect A Class Of Things (Physiological changes: galvanic skin response, repiration, heart rate) 11- (Hearing Group), Discriminatory, Analyze
  15. Okay, here's what I have for a DD-like character: 30 +10 PER with all Sense Groups 32 Spatial Awareness (no Sense Group), Discriminatory, Increased Arc Of Perception (360 Degrees) 20 Discriminatory with Normal Hearing, Normal Touch and Smell/Taste Group 10 Analyze with Normal Smell and Normal Taste 5 Tracking with Normal Smell 10 +20 versus Range Modifier for Normal Hearing 7 +20 versus Range Modifier for Normal Hearing (10 Active Points); Concentration (0 DCV; -1/2) 3 Detect Human Falsehood 23-/13- (Hearing Group) Some of the questions I have are related to PER mods for scenarios like: How much of mod would it be to hear a heartbeat across a room (all other things being equal)? Detect the scent of a cologne in a room after someone left X amount of time ago. Track someone's cologne through a busy city (with all its other smells!) Something "easy" like discriminating between two different people? For the Detect Lies, what mods would you apply? Skill Vs Skill against Persuasion + Acting (complementary)? Thoughts?
  16. Re: Jungle Character - Summon Animals, Transfixing Gaze That's how I'd do it, with a Multipower. You could do it with Mind Control, Set Effect="Stand still" (-1/2). Or you could do it with a form of Mental Paralysis (Entangle Based on ECV). Both have their up- and down-sides. You could take Only While Maintaining Eye Contact for a (-1/2). Sounds fair to me.
  17. Re: Fei Long's Fists of Fury: The Rekka Ken Oops, forgot that component. Tiered HAs sounds good.
  18. Re: Fei Long's Fists of Fury: The Rekka Ken I don't get it. Why isn't this just handled with the Sweep maneuver?
  19. Re: Bestiar(ies) questions You don't even need to fully penetrate the tank armor to stop it. Use a HESH round. Punching through armor is nifty to see, but you're really just trying to stop the people inside. The HESH round transfers energy through conduction to the inside of the tank where small pieces of the metal flake off (called spalling) and acts on an antipersonnel basis. It's kind of like teleporting a frag inside the tank.
  20. Re: Dhalsim's Transcendent Awareness: Zen No Mind This just sounds like a fancy-schmancy way of Holding your Action then using your levels to good effect.
  21. Re: Fei Long's Fists of Fury: The Rekka Ken Buy some Duplication, fully Invisible and coordinate attacks for the combined Stun.
  22. Re: Arsenic It's going to be difficult because of the long term effects. If it's in a high enough concentration to be fatal sooner than later, then something like an NND RKA that Does Body. Otherwise it can take awhile for the effects to show up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenic_poisoning
