MisterVimes
Re: The cranky thread South Park was just as stupid and unwatchable when it was Beavis and Buthead. Now, you are certainly welcome to dislike South Park, taste is, after all, subjective, but your argument is spurious. Let's examine your statement: 1) South Park is stupid. South Park is crass, it is often offensive, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has watched the show for any length to call it stupid. The show is a lampoon of society and has attacked every sacred cow from Scientology to World of Warcraft to Internet Addiction to Racism to Broadway Musicals to Bro-Culture. The creators of the show have created a multiple Tony award winning musical. The show is quite the opposite of stupid. The show has been critically acclaimed and won CableACE, GLAAD, Emmy, and Peabody awards (the Peabody being the most prestigious award for electronic media). So, clearly, you are in the minority there. 2) South Park is unwatchable. The show has run for 16 seasons with a 90% positive average viewer rating and averages 3 million viewers per episode. That is 1 million more than comparable Cable programs. Clearly it is watchable and by a larger than average audience considering the age of the show and the fact that it is a cartoon. 3) South Park is like Beavis and Butthead. Beavis and Butthead has experienced none of the above mentioned success in viewership, ratings, awards, or criticism. The plot of the show is, by design, non-existent and two (barely) animated characters "review" music videos and talk about scoring with chicks, how much they hate school, and getting high. Much of the dialog is merely looped or replayed. The similarities between the show are simply not there. Again, you're certainly welcome to not like the show, we are all slaves to our tastes, but the statements you made are simply unsupportable. Again, you're certainly welcome to not like the show, we are all slaves to our tastes, but the statements you made are simply unsupportable. Both shows show stupid people doing stupid things in an attempt to show people that doing stupid things is stupid. Both shows resulted in stupid people doing some of the stupid things the shows showed. Specifically, (IMU), the creators of the show were stunned that anyone thought Cartman was an example to follow and thus made him worse. For anyone who knows those things are stupid, the show can be funny and is redundant. For anyone who is likely to think those stupid ideas are great, the show is a source of inspiration. The net effect, from my own observations, is negative. Perhaps it's been too long since you've been in high school, but acting in the sort of manner of Beavis, Buthead and Cartman was popular in the schools I went to. My own personal experience is that the shows provided no preventive effect; that, in fact, it was the opposite. I stand by my experiences.
