teh bunneh
Anyone got stats for a low-powered, street-level voodoo-man? ~200-250 points? Minor powers, but mostly a gangster type... I will gift you with rep and the undying gratitude of a zombie-bunny!
jkwleisemann
Re: Voodoo master Hmm... you want power writeups, or full stats? And low-grade Champions, or high-power Dark Champions? I differentiate the two mostly by the acceptable use of frameworks and such. Good guy or bad? Finally, how 'realistic' do you want him to be? Comic/Hollywood voodoo, or something a bit more strongly inspired by some research into the real thing?
teh bunneh
Re: Voodoo master Full writeup would be nice. Higher-powered Dark Champs. Bad guy. Leader of a gang of Haitian drug-dealers & killers. More Hollywood than realistic. Kinda like The Serpent & The Rainbow. Thanks!

Lord Liaden
Re: Voodoo master Hmm... well, Mark "Markdoc" Doherty's marvelous magic web sourcebook, The Ultimate Grimoire, has notes on designing voodoo-based magic on this webpage. He also provides stats for a loa, or voodoo spirit, who was once a living man and a bokor (voodoo sorceror) called Grandpere Ubu. Some of those details might be useful. There's good coverage of voodoo magic in The Ultimate Mystic, but I don't have access to the book now so I'm not sure if it also includes packages for a bokor or houngan. He had to take care of her, and of his little brother and sister. He remembered his father, a good man Robert's mother said, gunned down when Robert was only four years old. Robert remembered that, and on his tenth birthday Robert killed the man who did it. Robert's mother ignored her son's criminal career as long as she could, pushing him to learn the religion that gave her life meaning, begging his uncles to teach him Capoeira, to give him discipline, to make him strong. She tried not to ask where the money came from, as Robert's thuggery supported the family. Then, on his 17th birthday, a drive by shooting killed his mother and left Robert near death. He saw the Ghede brothers, gods of the graveyard, dancing, and they spoke to him. When he woke in the hospital, he couldn't remember what they'd said. Things changed for Robert then. His mother was dead, but he was a believer. The graveyard gods had spoken to him, told him to mend his ways, to be a man, to be a leader. But they hadn't saved his mother, after she'd believed in them, gave them whiskey, gave them tobacco. They let her die. Robert was a believer, and he hated his gods. Robert took that belief, and that hate, back to the streets. He could have been a Houngun, a leader and a healer. He became a Bokor, a follower of the darkest aspects of the Loa. With charm and wits he leads his people, with rage and strength he fights his battles, and with the blessings of the Loa nothing touches him. He protects his little brother and sister. He protects his brothers and his girls. The rest of the world is going to pay. Personality/Motivation: Brilliant, angry, cruel, Brother Ghede was offered the chance to be a hero. He chose to protect his own, and strike at a world that he could not forgive for the loss of his father, his mother, and his childhood. His uncles taught him strength and love of family, but they were not men who had respect for the law, or for those outside of their own circles, and Brother Ghede has less. He keeps his word and meets respect with respect, threats with bloody and uncontrolled violence. There may be a good man somewhere buried in Robert Benin, but if so he burried that man himself, and has no wish to find him. Quote: That the best you got? Powers/Tactics: Robert Benin has some apparently genuine supernatural powers. He can allow the Ghede Loa to "ride" him, gaining near superhuman strength and resilience for a time. His luck is amazing, thanks (he says) to the Loa, and he's able to use his wide range of skills to pull off the near impossible. He can (using his power skill) perform Voodoo rituals that achieve genuinely astonishing effects, though her does so rarely. On top of all this, he's a formidable martial artist, an accomplished escape artist, and a skilled leader of men. Brother Ghede will lead from the front, allowing the Loa to ride him and trusting his luck and raw toughness to protect him. He is not stupid; if overwhelmed he'll use acrobatics to flee and attack again some other day. If captured, he'll use his contortionism, concealment and lockpicking to escape. He will cheerfully use guns if he has any available. Campaign Use: Appearance: Muscular black man in his early twenties. Dresses in loose street fashions. As Brother Ghede, appearance becomes subtly corpse-like, movements become jerky and exaggerated, dresses in top hat, tuxedo jacket and pants, no shirt. Character by Robert Dorf, 2007. Scavenging what he could find as the land was stripped away and begging when he could find nothing on the streets of Fort-Libert. Jean-Louis learned quickly that to get any respect one needs two things money or power. By the time he was fourteen Jean-Louis was working as a mule, moving cocaine through customers into the Dominican Republic. A year later, a fight in his home village escalated and the blood of two other children was one his hands. Already wanted in Fort-Libert for smuggling, his mother brokered a deal with an elder to hide her son. The next eight years were spent living as an indentured servant to the elders sister Marie LeCroix. An aid worker at the Saint Clares Womans Shelter Marie continued the old traditions as a medicine woman. Jean-Louis studied from her intently watching as a new world opened before him. Legends manifest as she placed blessings on babies and cursed those who crossed her. During the turmoil of the 1986 uprising Jean-Louis escaped to America. Since then he has taken up old habits working as a local drug dealer and building a small gang devoted to him as students. Jean-Louis has worked for years to earn respect and demands it from those who follow him. The rumors of what becomes of those who cross him are often enough to keep even the most brash members of his gang in line. Personalilty: Jean-Louis is hungry, respect, power, money he wants it all. Hes smart enough to know how to hide his desires but his fierce temper reveals it all. Working behind the scenes Jean-Louis is rarely on the street anymore letting his gang handle the grunt work. Aligned with a local cartel Jean-Louis is seen as a rising star, moving through the ranks. Quote: Tactics: Campaign Use: Portrait Disadvantages Pts. Blue
Re: Voodoo master I was thinking about something like this the other day. I kept seeing the ad for the movie Zodiac on busses and got hung up on the corny occult investigator name Trevor Zodiac. I was thinking he'd need enemies and they'd likley be a voodoo practicioner and the classic "devil in disguise". For the latter I wanted someone like DeNiro in "Angel Heart" (Louis Cypher). But I wasn't sure what the voodoun would be.
