Re: Classic Comic Book Characters

Wooo... I'm liking these write ups. I don't really know the Marvel characters as much, but each of them presents ideas for original characters. I'm going to have to run a DCZ campaign soon. I was thinking of a "sidekick" campaign. Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Speedy, Spoiler... Not really a Teen Titan situation, Dark and gritty Gotham.

Re: Classic Comic Book Characters

Hello everyone....

Very new here (joined a while ago, but not able to be active) and new to Hero. Cassandra, you seem to be very versed in this. Would you mind doing a write up of spider-man? I would love to see that at the 250 level...As I am new I have tried to make supers at the 350....maybe I will re-think this.

Thank you for all that you have done allready!

Why don't you try? If you're new to Hero, the practice would be good for you.

It's not that difficult: start by listing the core elements of the character - powers, key characteristics, skills, character quirks, important supporting cast members, etc. Keep it simple - just include enough to get the feel of the character, not every twist and turn of the last (nearly) 50 years.

Use Cassandra's builds as a benchmark - is Spider-man stronger or weaker than this character, is he faster or slower, smarter or dumber, etc.

We'll help. Just give us something to help you with. ;)

Re: Classic Comic Book Characters

I have made a few characters, but I am still stumbling through being able to find ways to come up with effects. When most of your RP'in experience has been years of DnD 2e, cyberpunk, and palladium, the Hero System is pretty intimidating at first. Now, however, I have time to devote to it. At the moment, I am creating around 10 or so original supers characters, and trying to come up with a way to convert some of mongoose publishings Conan rpg to Hero....obviously way above my head at present but a good learning experience....mostly working weapon/armor/"racial" conversions right now...slow going. I do appreciate the offer for help, assault, and am really looking forward to learning this system. It's fun, but without a dedicated RP group it's just "me and the books" and is taking a bit of time.

Cassandra, I am pretty much asking you how you would do this...as I'm pretty sure your write up would be quite better and cover more of his abilities, as you seem to have alot of knowledge of this games inner workings.

Assault, you bring a good point though...what I got from it was "you wont learn unless you just do it". I get you bro, for sure there....and I have tried spidey but I'm having a hard time coming up with how to work with power frameworks (webbing based powers), how to use them so they are not exploitive, yet how to get them to actually be cost effective. Maybe I'm trying too hard :nonp:

Anyways, its allways good to see how experienced players build things to learn from...I'll kill my rant now as this thread should be to showcase cassandra's characters....

After one last point! Assault, maybe you could shoot me some tips you have for character creation on another thread, or a Pm or something? I'm not looking for someone to "do it all" for me, just someone to mentor me as I learn how to do it. Take it easy everyone....sorry for hoggin the thread kinda Cassandra!

Happy gaming,

Tim

Edit: just re-read assaults post, and he did give me tips. Thanks assault! I'll take note of that and work on my conversion skills.

You might want to give this a look for some possible ideas on both Spidey and adaptations in general:

http://project250.tripod.com/ultimatespidey.html

That write up is from this page:

http://www.angelfire.com/scifi2/mathew/champions.html

which has a whole lot of 250pt characters (tho' I believe they are/were written for the 4th edition rules).

And if you have not visited it yet I'd suggest:

http://surbrook.devermore.net/index/

which is chock full of Hero goodness. Especially (for the subject at hand) this page:

http://surbrook.devermore.net/herosource/adaptions.html

Re: Magneto

Magneto

...

Total Cost: 250

...

Occupation: World Conqueror, Mobile.

OK, here is the one thing I won't go for - mastermind villains built on the same totals as starting PCs.

Magneto should be almost able to fight off the entire original X-Men, and make a good stab at conquering the world as well.

Likewise, Dr Doom should be able to build deathtraps that can threaten the entire Fantastic Four, build a robot that can fool them, and be able to escape them once they realise they're being scammed. Later versions should be able to fight them as well.

As the saying goes: "points are for players". GMs don't have to worry about them. Characters like Magneto are NPCs.

Re: Classic Comic Book Characters

maybe cassandra was using starter stats for maggie

Heh. ;)

I'm the biggest user of that excuse, but Maggie first appeared as an opponent of the X-Men. He should, therefore, be able to chew up the starting X-Men, and generally do what he did in his first appearance. I don't think this version can.

Design Notes

To Buddy, I'm glad you like Thunderbolt and Dynamo. I couldn't find much information on either and used a book on Superheroes to base them on. Dynamo is a super-agent with a powerful gadget. How he does all he has to in 30 minutes a day is beyond me. Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt seemed to me was a high end martial artist with a mystic origin.

To Assault, My Mageto is rather low end for a world conqueror in the traditional sense, but he has the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (coming soon) and Mystique to back his plays. Further his powers are area effects attacks limited only by the amount of metal in the area he can manipulate (hence the charges and the OIF). You'll notice his force field and flight are not subject to that limitation so he can always escape to fight another day.

My mindset is that villains are not more powerful then the heroes, they just either put their resources into one big attack power or use underhanded means to defeat the heroes. As a mastermind Magneto would attack from behind, and lure the X-Men into traps by threatening their loved ones. The heroes while having the same number of points would be at a distinct disadvantage in those situations.
