WWYCD: I've read this somewhere

(This only applies if your setting either has D.C. or Marvel comics of works of fiction that folks enjoy)

* An Airfield that tests experimental planes reports one of their pilots has gone missing, just right after a possible UFO siting. One of the janitors swears the pilot was carried off in a 'green glow' but the janitor had been hitting the sauce. If the heroes DON'T go looking for him, the pilot returns a few hours later seeming reluctant to talk about it, and bearing a new ring.

* Speaking of UFOs, a married couple with a farm finds a young baby in some sort of capsule at a crater. While they will try to cover it up for most, they may come to the supers for advice... it turns out the baby (which they hoped to adopt) is VERY strong...super strong in fact.

* A young boy is found in an alley crying, the son of billionaires, he just saw his parents killed right in front of him. The boy seems very INTENSE about this. While it is too late to save his parents, your character might be able to catch the culprit.

* A brilliant American scientist , his best friend, his finance, and her brother make history by being some of the first civilians to fly into space via their own civilian craft (of an experimental design much faster than any shuttle) to explore a strange radiation band of some sort. The Scientist is sure their shields will hold. Many nations have expressed interest in these radiations, making this something of a space race. Any PCs who check out the shielding themselves will discover that it SHOULD be sufficient against typical radiations, but there maybe energy types it can't compensate for.

* A scrawny guy in an outfit with web designs becomes a wrestling and TV sensation. Coincidentally, this is a week after a science exhibit was closed down when a spider got into the works

* The Navy reports they've found a Golden Age superhero frozen but ALIVE in the waters of the Arctic. PCs who are experts in history, medicine, or the like might be asked for aid.

And so on... Even if your characters don't have KS: Comic Books...they probably know someone who does. It would appear that suddenly, some of the most famous FICTIONAL superheroes are having, or have just had their origins! (Further optional twists Pick which ones you like) 1) The folks actually HAVE names like Reed Richards, Bruce Wayne, etc. Somehow, as they appear, the comics showing them have vanished, and only the PCs remember the stories. 2) The folks have different names, but the same origins occurring and it may unfold in almost if not exactly the same way Either way, your character can intervene to some degree. Forearmed with this info, what does your character do about all this? If anything.

Well, if the PC's have or know someone who recognizes these 'origins' then it stands to reason that a ton of fanboys and a good portion of general public would too.

HM

  • Would first investigate the hoax aspect. Primarily by getting to know the people involved to see if they have any knowledge of their ironic nature.
  • Protect them from the 'fanboy-public'.
  • If it ain't a hoax then he'd investigate dimensional rift possibility.

Volt would investigate to see if it is a hoax or some such. If not, contact the adults and welcome/introduce them to superherodom. Children would be handled according to age. The baby in the rocket - just tell the parents they are in for an interesting time. The kid in the alley... watch him carefully. Protect all non adults against fans/villians wanting to stop it before it starts.

Olorin would have no idea what the origins are, he's from another world. Once told, he'd go "Cool!" and investigate. He is a dimensional expert so he could tell if that were the cause. Otherwise he'd act like Volt - if they belonged here, although he'd watch supes more closely than Volt would - just due to curiosity. If they belonged "back home" he'd take them there.

Black Tiger would start the way he always does. By swearing. Then the investigation. He'd help train Bruce Wayne when he's ready, and watch Clark closely to make sure he stayed a hero. Protect when needed, and help others acclimate. Then he'd be on the look out for villain origins - and prevent them if possible.

Futurian- "Oh wow! Old timey heroes! Cool!" Would do his best to see if it real, and if so, merely greet them as he meets them. He would not go out of his way to do anything if they are real.

All would deal with hoaxes/fakes as needed.

The Wizard of Oz Incorporated sits at his desk and ponders. Comic books. Someone with vast cosmic powers and a love of comic books. He starts his computer cross referencing comic book collectors reported to have been the victim of crimes or unexplained phenomena. Meanwhile since there's a tragedy still in the offing, he'll whip off to New York and try to save the Uncle Ben equivalent, then give the kid a scolding about how his self-centeredness nearly got a member of his family killed.

Here's an idea--investigate to see what happened to the creators of those characters. Did they disappear with the comics they created, or did they have completely unremarkable lives in other lines of work?

Perhaps Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster lived long, utterly normal lives in Cleveland, occasionally daring to dream about the strongest of all men, but never committing those dreams to paper. Bob Kane might have drawn a funny animal strip--or maybe he just illustrated magazine advertisements, occasionally entertaining the notion of a mysterious, caped vigilante detective. Stanley Lieber may have been sent off to war and never came home--just like Jack Kirby. And possibly, in a second-hand bookstore in London, one Alan Moore tends to the customers while nurturing fantasies of a one-man revolution.

Meanwhile since there's a tragedy still in the offing, he'll whip off to New York and try to save the Uncle Ben equivalent, then give the kid a scolding about how his self-centeredness nearly got a member of his family killed.

Unless it's the movie continuity, in which case it doesn't matter if the kid did the right thing or not--the Uncle still would have gotten killed. :angst:
