Marcus Impudite
In games where characters are tossing around powerful attacks, it's far from inconceivable that someone's going to bring the house down... quite literally. How many GMs out there have had situations in their campaign worlds where a stray Energy Blast or the like during a battle has done sufficient damage to build's load-bearing walls/structures that there was a real danger of (partial or full) collapse? And how did you handle it in game?
SteelCold
Its rather a tricky question as most opponents would try their best not to miss the targets. Villains might not care about collateral damage but I can imagine that heroes might at least try to pull punches in heavily populated urban areas. Greywind
There's a rule about firing guns that applies to ranged attacks in general: know your backfield. Most GM's that I've played with don't go into heavy detail about random misses/collateral damage unless it is to become a plot point later on. SteelCold
I agree with Greywind. Its more GM's fait than any kind of house rule you can ever leave to the chance of the dice esp. the ones the players can see as well.
bluesguy
Once in a while I will have the players roll to see the direction of the missed show and then use the amount they missed by to calculate the distance. But only if it adds to the fun or drama. For instance: Trying to hit a villain who is in a crowd of innocents. And we always do it if someone misses their AoE (which can result in some very funny outcomes) - "Dang I just flashed myself in my 10" Radius Flash"
Greywind
Sounds like ground for a public indecency charge.
massey
I figure most responsible characters automatically position themselves so that missed attacks go harmlessly into the sky / into the dirt. Even in a big city with a lot of tall buildings, there's a lot of empty sky out there. If you're powerful enough to chuck an energy blast that could topple a building, you can probably spare a few inches of movement so that you don't vaporize said building if you miss. It's all about the angle you take when you shoot.
csyphrett
I dropped a base on a character. He dug himself out after a few hours CES
