Sam On Maui
Okay, so Fantasy HERO Complete is coming out soon, right? And Fantasy HERO is available via PDF. I've got Champions Complete as well as HERO Basic - which book would be better for me to get? What do they offer overall? How do they compare and contrast? I guess the duplication sort of confuses me a bit
Christopher R Taylor
If you know the system and have the rules already, I suspect that the Fantasy Hero book will be a more complete set of rules and information, while Fantasy Hero Complete is more an introductory "here's how to play Fantasy with the Hero system" sort of book, but I have not actually held both 6th edition FH and FH complete in my hands to compare. bigbywolfe
Fantasy Hero Complete will be much like Champions Complete, the complete game rules plus a section on running the fantasy genre. It is the complete Hero System rules (hence the name) and not a mere introduction to fantasy as Christopher guessed. Fantasy Hero is Hero System's genre book for fantasy, much like Champions is the genre book for superheroes. It does NOT contain the Hero System rules despite what Christopher said. It is all genre information. It covers different types of fantasy (high, low, epic, s&s) has racial templates, career templates, a hugely expanded weapons list, multiple magic systems, and tons more. zslane
If you already have the system rules in some form, e.g., Champions Complete, then I think you would get more value out of the Fantasy Hero PDF than Fantasy Hero Complete. Christopher R Taylor
Well I didn't mean FHC was stripped down and simple, but rather instead of being a very in depth examination of Fantasy Hero like the main book, its is more "how to use the hero system to play fantasy." At least, as I understand it. And I didn't say Fantasy Hero had the rules - Fantasy Hero Complete does.
bigbywolfe
And I didn't say Fantasy Hero had the rules - Fantasy Hero Complete does. Christopher R Taylor
I can see how that might be confusing, I just meant "for specifically fantasy, FH will be more compete in terms of the information than FHC," not "it contains the hero rule set." thewomble
FH 6E is a huge compendium of options and tools for fantasy. Given that FHC will also contain the Hero rules, all in 260 pages, it's a fair guess that there will be much less material than you would have by combining FH with Champions Complete or another source of the rules. I like to use FH with the two core 6E volumes, but that is a truckload of rules and options, no doubt about it, which might be a disadvantage e.g. for a new Hero GM seeking to get a game off the ground quickly. Doresh
Not to mention that Fantasy Hero has mass combat rules, which can always be handy depending on what kind of campaign you have in mind. (Though maybe Fantasy Complete comes includes those, or at least a shortened version of it.)
zslane
One could buy the PDFs of both FH and FHC, extract the system rules from FHC and combine them with FH. Take the resulting PDF and POD it as a b&w softcover. Best of both worlds!
Sam On Maui
I've been told the mass combat rules for HERO aren't very good. Not sure which edition, though, so maybe its better now?
NuSoardGraphite
You woild only need complete if you did not already posssess the core rulesbooks.
Sam On Maui
And Fantasy HERO bought. I'm a little surprised its $13 more expensive at DTRPG than the HERO store, but oh well... That's HERO's choice...
Christopher R Taylor
Drive Thru takes a cut so Hero has to charge more to get the same per copy.
Sam On Maui
Non-exclusive publishers pay a 35% rate, so on a game costing the oddly specific amount of $33.74, they keep $21.93. So, they actually come out a little ahead. Champions Complete is $20 in both stores, though... Which is odd since its in print whereas the other two aren't. Scott Baker
There are a number of odd price discrepancies (in both directions) between the Hero Store an DTRPG. I can't figure it out.
Sam On Maui
Ah well. I won't lose any sleep over it
