  1. Re: Quantum from Dragon Magazine #111, 1986 by George MacDonald

Oh, as a bonus that magazine also had an original character for V&V RPG named Maxima, written by Jack Herman. Maxima was supposed to be an overpowered female character (fitting with the theme of that issue), so I used the generic conversion notes in V&V to Champions to write her character sheet. She IS aweful overpowered and not well balanced, but I was curious what she would look like in Champions:

    http://home.comcast.net/~mathewignash/PDFs/MAXIMA.pdf

Yes, that a SPD of 13, CON 105, 54 point of resistant defense, 37 levels of Regeneration, etc. I just followed the OFFICIAL conversion rules for converting V&V to Champions printed back then. I did say she was not well balanced, but she's official.

  2. Back in 1986, Dragon Magazine number 111 printed an article by George MacDonald called "Quantum, Power and Super-Power in the Champions Game." This article detailed the subject of making a character at different levels of "power" for your Champions game.

As an example George created a character named Quantum (no relation to the mutant hero in the BBB). Quantum is a woman who gained super powers thanks to an accident with a device created by Doctor Destroyer (read the article for details). George presented tables of Quantum's stats. She ranged in five levels from a starter heroine, to a goddess of destruction who took on alien battle fleets.

Presented here are full writeups for all five versions of Quantum, based on George's tables, in easy to use character sheets, updated to 4th edition rules.

  3. Re: Is there a running thread for minor corrections on old books?

    Classic Enemies

p21, Le Sone's point total should be 405 as written, not 401. Since he should get a bonus point in his PS, his PS: Diving should only cost 1 point, not 2. This brings his character point total to 404.

p27, Big John should probably have a free Everyman PS: Engineer of 8 or less, since he was once once in his biography.

p37, Sunburst's Powers and Skills come to 254 points, not 284 points. This makes his total character cost 501, not 531. His PS: Business 13- skill costing 4 points, should probably be INT based PS: Businessman, and with the Everyman bonus it costs 2 points. This brings the total cost of the character down to 499.

p44, Lightning's Teleportation slot has 69 active points, not 62. You can increase the cost of the Reserve to 69 points, not 62, and the slot to 7, not 6. Also, since he gets a free point in a PS for his Everyman skill, his PS:Accountant skills should cost 2 points, not 3. This brings is total character cost to 207, not 200.

    Allies

p9, Major Star's PS: Soldier should cost 1 point, not 2.

  4. Re: the EP-13 and EU-13 and synchro cannons alphas use in Robotech

For the EP-13 the number of rounds fired doesn't really matter, just the number of shots you can fire with a clip. Can the weapon in question fire a single round? If not, then make the number of charges the weapon has equal to the number of times it can be fired without reloading.

When I was converting Robotech to Champions I based it on the Palladium rules, and made a chart up converting damage and body from one system to the other. Remember that in Pallladium melee rounds are 15 second, not 12 second turns.

When I converted the original Alpha from Invid Invasion book to 4th editon Hero rules it looked like this:

... but that writeup was done with the GU-XX gun pods.

  6. Re: Is there a running thread for minor corrections on old books?

You know what I learned recently by doing these writeups? I was working on making Heromaker files for Champions of the North, and the point cost fo PS skills kept being wrong in many otherwise perfect writeups. Then I realized that the author was using the Everyman skill rules for PS in the BBB, which says that every character gets one free 8- PS of choice, and if they increase that PS they get that one point for free, which is why many characters in the Champions of the North book had lower than normal cost PS skills. Since this is an official rule (even though not a lot of people use it), I think I'll have to recalculate all the 4th editon writeups I have that have PS skills to include this bonus. There are a lot of characters in other 4th edition books with PS's that paid a point too much!

  7. Re: Mental Awareness AND Telepathy?

I found one character where it makes more sense to buy it. In European Enemies there is the character of Mandelbrot who has Mental Awareness, but he also had Mind Control. The Mind Control is only vs. computers and through an OAF. I'd assume the free Mental Awareness he gets would also have those limitation, right? So he bought straight Mental Awareness to have it without any limitations.

One problem I have with Mandelbrot though is how he bought a 80 point "computer", but also has several powers with "OAF Computer"... either make it a focus for powers OR a computer Follower. I don't see the logic in making both. If it's a follower, then the follower should have those powers, not him.

  8. Re: Is there a running thread for minor corrections on old books?

    425 - VIPER

p116, Stalwart's Motorcycle should cost 19 points, not 20. His second Flash Defense should probably be vs. sound, not visual flashes. He should have DF "Detects as a mutant".

p119, Citidel's Multipower Growth slot should cost 3 points not 4. His STUN with Growth should be 67, not 68. His Driving 12- skill should read Combat Driving 15-. His DNPC should be worth 10 points, not 5. He should have DF "Detects as a mutant."

  9. Re: Esper powers caused by infection

Idea - size counts. Those people with larger brains can get potentially higher power levels (holds more fungus). Those with smaller brains are limited. As someone with an enormous hat size I want to get SOME bonus for it. Most animals are simply unable to manifest psionics because their brains are too small. Up side - psionic whales and dolphins could happen, but the fungus is doesn't develop in salt water. Are there any other land animals with large brains?

  10. Re: Esper powers caused by infection

Start the campaign with a rash of seemingly real uses of psi power showing up on youtube, and have the "heroes" investigate them to discover they are real.

Also, what about an underground "drug" culture where people sell hits of that spore to people hoping to get powers?
