  1. Re: Villains Vandals And Vermin (VVV)

As Line Developer I almost never permit Distinctive Features based on odd appearance for a Champions Universe character' date=' and never have. There are too many unusual-looking people around; it's just not that disadvantageous IMO.[/quote']

I can see the logic in that but I have to disagree. A "normal" looking character can do things that a 9' humanoid rock pile can't, such as blend into a crowd and generally be inconspicuous if the situation calls for it. Of course, as line developer I like that you are keeping a consistent policy, but in my campaigns Distinctive Features are in.

  2. Re: Villains Vandals And Vermin (VVV)

IMO the purpose of official books shouldn't be to cater to those who choose to use the material in a non-standard way. If someone wants to play a 250 point CU game that is fine but the books shouldn't be written for those people. The books should be written for the CU standard and is someone wants to play lower or higher point games they should do the legwork themselves. It's far easier for the 10% of buyers who play at 250 points to make characters weaker then it is for the 90% who don't to be forced to make the adjustments' date=' IMO.[/quote']

What is "non-standard" about a low powered game? Entire sourcebooks have been written for lower powered games. Teen Champions and Dark Champions immediately spring to mind. What's wrong with including some villains that cater to this power level? Did someone make it a rule that anything that differs from the 350 suggested power level is "non-standard"?

Speaking only for myself, including some lower powered villains in VV&V is a selling point, not a negative. YMMV

  3. Any input, critique or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks in advance. It was difficult to get this character squeezed into the campaign guidelines of 200 + 100 and he still doesn't feel quite right.

Mercurites powers are based around his Mercurization Belt which transforms his body into living mercury. This makes him extremely dense and heavy and allows him to stretch and contort his body. Also, since mercury is semi-frictionless, he can "skate" very quickly. He has also constructed a pair of Power gauntlets that have a variety of non-lethal attacks.

    Background:

Marcus Curry has always possesed a natural scientific curiosity. Because of this he was a top student and graduated at the head of his class from Kansas University Medical School. He continued his studies and earned a PHD in Physics and Biotechnology from MIT. Highly recruited out of college Dr. Marcus Curry chose a position with The Devalier Research Institute in Chicago. Unbeknownst to Marcus, DRI was actualy a cover organization for VIPER, who planned to use his inventions for their own purposes. During his work on the Human Mercurization Project, Marcus began to get suspicious of his employers motives. While doing research late one night he stumbled on documents linking DRI with VIPER. He knew he couldn't allow his inventions to fall into the hands of such a dangerous organization. Marcus destroyed his research data and donned the Mercurization Belt to make his getaway. He was confronted by the supervillain mercenary Tachyon who was working as security for VIPER. In the ensuing battle Marcus managed to incapacitate Tachyon and make good his escape.

Since then Marcus has taken on the name of Mercurite and devoted himself to opposing crime (and VIPER in particular). To this end he has perfected his Mercurization Belt and developed a pair or powerful gauntlets to give him some added firepower for his fight against crime. Marcus patented some of his lesser biotechnology discoveries and is now living off of the royalties. Marcus recently moved to Millennium City to be "closer to the action" as the crimefighter Mercurite.

    Personality

Marcus is an introvert. He's not antisocial, but he chooses his friends carefully and only has a few people that he would call true friends. Marcus would rather spend an evening in the lab doing research or taking apart a captured piece of hi-tech than going out on the town. Despite that, he does have a good sense of humor and is basicly a good natured person. He is very loyal to his friends and is commited to fighting crime. He prefers to stay out of the spotlight and avoids interacting with the media whenever possible.

  4. Re: Villains Vandals And Vermin (VVV)

IIRC' date=' Gauntlet, Galaxia, Fleshtone, Exo, Entopy, Curse, Dreamwitch, Buzzsaw, Blindside, Basilisk and Avant Guard ...[/quote']

I actually really like the artwork for Avant Guard and Curse. In fact, those are two of my favorite characters in the book. On that list, the ones that I did not like are Fleshtone and Basilisk. They just came off as..."bland" is the best word I can think of. Basilisk for example had very little detail, he's just a line drawing. He almost looks like a template with the details left unfinished, like you used to find on the old character sheets.

And thank you for the opportunity to give some feedback. As Liaden said, it's a classy move on your part.

  5. Re: Villains Vandals And Vermin (VVV)

Thanks Death Tribble :) Honestly guys, I have a pretty thick skin. We all have our bad days, and from what I've read in this thread, this book seems to be mine ;) I just hope people enjoy the book and use what they can in their campaigns ... I won't offer excuses, I'll just say I'll try to do better with the next work that I do (see the next Digital Hero).

If I may ask one thing though, if you didn't like the art, especially mine, please let me know what you didn't like about it :) An artist is only as good as his feedback and I'd like to do better the next time around :D Many thanks.

    Which artwork is yours?

  6. Re: Villains Vandals And Vermin (VVV)

I just got my copy about a week ago. I agree that a large portion of the artwork is sub-par and some of it is downright bad. Unlike many of the other posters here, I really like the Brain Trust and the Crimelords. They are about the right power level for the campaign that I co-GM, where the characters started at 300 points and most are now in the 325 to 350 range. They are also generic enough to drop into just about any plotline for whatever reason I need at the moment.

Though some of the other villains in the book will never see the light of day in my games there are enough good ones for me to say that I think it's money well spent. Sunspot, Spirit Dragon, Plague and The Curse are some favorites. Overall, I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

  7. Re: Steampunk Rayguns

I posted this on the Pulp Hero board, but here is a link to a funny promotional video:

    http://www.wetanz.com/rayguns/infomercial.php

"Even in the stifling humid rain forests of Vespurgia, I managed to discover and acquire 47 new species! Most of them charred beyond scientific recognition."

    And

The advantage with this trusty wave discharger is heft. In the unlikely (but statistically probable) event of its malfunction, it doubles as a wonderful cudgel. Brigands and ne'er do wells will cringe when the Goliathon is brandished at them. Of course, its infra-wave undulations will dissolve 7/9ths of an African Elephant in 10 earth seconds, a handy implement to wield on all occasions.

On lower settings a quick zap will cook a Dodo egg to perfection. Order right this moment or consider one's self a snotty cur.

  8. Re: MancerBear's Art Den

I feel like I'm letting the side down, not posting any work of late... unfortunately I've been so busy with my adult work, that the superhero stuff as slid a bit.

Anyway, here's the cover for issue 44 of Digital Hero, which should be out fairly shortly. I've also got some black and white art appearing on the inside, which I'll post later on.

No doubt some of you will recognize the diabolical Professor Muerte, who has undergone a few changes. Find out exactly what has happened to the good doctor in Digital Hero.

This one kicks ass! I resurrected Muerte in my campaign and now I have the appropriate artwork. Repped
