  1. Re: Gamma Girl pics A newsletter? That was news to me as well. Perhaps Al-Hazred meant the message board?
  2. Re: Somebody PLEASE build me a wombat! No no, people, this isn't for a game. I just wanted to know what a character who calls themself "Combat Wombat" might look like. The name struck me as sooo delightful that I wanted someone to use it...sorry if I mislead you. And many thanks to Kirby and Al-Hazred for vital tips on Champions character creation. I'd rep you, but I...um...don't seem to have any rep power. Oh the humanity.
  3. Hello, all: I'm an inveterate Champions player, but like the Owl-lady, I'm often baffled by the Hero system's jungle of rules...and I certainly couldn't build a character by myself (without adult supervision). But I've GOT to know what kind of a character someone called Combat Wombat would be.... Yes, I've just read the multi-post saga about Super Squirrel's problems with a particular player; a player referred to--by Hugh Neilson--as "Combat Wombat." OMG! I LOVE it! So...using the FREd rules and 250 points (plus up to 100 points in Disads, if you're desperate), please, somebody build the character of: Combat Wombat, the Marsupial Marvel, that burly burrowing Wonder From Down Under! I was thinking about someone along the lines of Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew, but I'm not wedded to the idea. And FYI, a wombat is a lot like a American badger, but without the stripes and the attitude.
  4. Re: Gamma Girl pics Hey, Lucky? To which pics were you referring? Is the proportion problem with the colored ones by T. Catt, or Chimpira's black-and-whites?
  5. Re: Need a name for a character Name for a martial artist using "shadow" techniques: Tenebrae (Latin for 'shadow') pronounced "ten-eh-BRAY" Nightfall (more "shadowy" names) Night's-Edge (for the incredible balance and shadow affinity) Dusk (another shady name) Eventide (just an old-fashioned way of saying "evening", coupled with the idea of the evening flowing in like the tide) Shadowdancer (for the shadow powers, speed and agility) Shadowhand (for the skills in MA) Shard (for the 'steel storm' techniques) Sunder (for the "shattering fist" HA) Shrapnel (likewise) Spiral (for the speed of movement and MA attacks) Helix (I imagine the character seems to spin in a circle when throwing out those Autofire attacks!) Shadow Scorpion (for the venemous fist HA) Manta (venemous fist HA) For what it's worth, I'd like the character to be male hero. Somehow shadows are usually seen as a feminine power, and a shadow-using martial artist villain is just terribly stereotypical! I'll keep posting names as they occur to me. Hopefully, one or two will be mindblowingly good!
  6. Re: Gamma Girl pics Gamma Girl was originally a kid sidekick to Lady Gray, a Batman-clone, so she (GG) was loosely based on Robin the Boy Wonder. I wanted a costume that was reminiscent of Robin's, so I chose one with something like a cape and bare legs. But since I can't draw to save my life, all I have to work with is whatever artwork I can find on the Net...and none of it is ever quite right. (These two pics were actually T. Catt's suggestions for new and more interesting costumes for Supergirl.) So it's all a matter of mix-n-match. I liked the costume in the first pic, especially the sort-of capes on the sleeves, and the colors. The character's hair is the right length, but the it's the wrong color and style, and her body is _far_ to slender, almost attenuated. Face is wrong, too. I liked the face, the posture and the hair color in the second pic. The snazzy little cropped jacket is good, too, and the character's build is better; she doesn't look like she's about to break in half. But the sky-blue jumpsuit doesn't do much for me, and the character's hair is too long and too straight. But these two pics are the best I've been able to do for an image of Gamma Girl. I posted them so that Chimpira could see what I've been using so far in our LSH/Champions game...and because I thought other people might find it interesting to watch the developments. Long Live the Legion!
  7. Re: Gamma Girl pics Another good job, Chimpira. Please see PM. I'm going to try and attach a couple of pics that I have been using for Gamma Girl; one for the costume, the other for face and hair. The art was originally drawn by T.Catt, and I do not intend to contest his rights in any way by posting the pics here.
  8. Re: Name This Hero From the sublime to the ridiculous...or vice versa. Spanner--reference to the character's stretching; he 'spans' any gap Mr. Midgard--stretching again; the world-encircling Midgard Serpent of Norse myth Longshadow--stretching _and_ a touch of Batman's darkness Entropy--bad pun; entropy is always increasing (i.e. growing, stretching...sorry) Sidestep--flexibility Recoil--flexibility; 'coil' suggests a twining snake, and 're' suggests a loop Initiative--always coming up with something Best of luck with your character!
  9. Re: Gamma Girl pics And for any of you out there who had any doubts about it, as always I am deeply impressed by Chimpira's artwork. His work is clean, sharp, excellently balanced, realistic and proportional. He's one hell of an artist! I feel lucky that he agreed to work on the Gamma Girl character pics for me.
  10. Re: Gamma Girl pics I'm very impressed with Freakboy6117's coloured version of Gamma Girl. It looks good, highlights and all. If _that's_ a quicky, then he must either have a) remarkable talent, remarkably high standards, or c) both. Odd thing about Freakboy's choice of colours for Gamma Girl's costume--orange and purple--those are the colours Legion of Superheroes member Duo Damsel wears in the classic LSH comics (I'm not talking 'bout that mangled post-Reboot mess). And in the LSH Champions game that Gamma Girl comes from, she is the _daughter_ of the Earth-2 Duo Damsel...looks like she inherited mum's colour sense! Gamma Girl's father's Kal-L Walkur, a 30th Century descendent of the Superman of Earth-2, and she inherited his blue-black hair; sorry, FB6117, she's not a brunette. In our Champions game, Kal-L Walkur is the Earth-2 version of Laurel Kent from the Legion Academy; didn't inherit any of the original's powers but invulnerability. Sound complicated? You don't know the half of it! And who is the mastermind running this elaborate gaming tribute to the original LSH in which Gamma Girl lives and breathes? Who is it that performed the labour of love of describing 40-odd Legionnaires, their history, technology, rogues' gallery and their whole 30th Century world in Champions terms? None other than the Hero Board's own sane genius ubernerd, Dr. Anomaly. Thanks for letting me play, Doc.
  11. Re: Need help naming Enviornmentalist team. Greensong Mother's Tears (as in 'Mother Earth') Silent Spring (as in the 1970s conservationist book of the same name; when all the birds are extinct, every spring will be a silent one) Wellspring Chalice Well (ancient healing spring in Glastonbury, England) Parliament of Trees Hand of Sulis (Gaelic goddess and patron of the springs) If not useful, I hope these are at least entertaining.
  12. Greetings, all. I'm playing a timelost character in a Champions version of the Legion of Superheroes setting. Gamma Girl grew up in America in the 70s, playing Robin to her guardian Lady Gray's Batman. In 1979, at age 17, she got transported across time and parallels to the DC Universe Earth, 30th Century. Now she's a Legionnaire, but she still occasionally uses 70's slang--and I'm too old and too English to know much besides 'groovy', 'far out', 'wild' and 'crazy'. Can anybody help me with a more complete list of things teenagers actually said in the 1970s? Did American teens still use dated 1960s phrases in the 70s? What was 'hot' and what was not in terms of speech in the America of the 1970s? Any help would by greatly appreciated. I'm really pleased with the character, but just how often can I have her say "Far out," in one session? I mean, really!
  13. Re: Goofy Villains Our GM was soundly berated (and there was actually a little beating in there, too) when we worked out what was going on with this particular villain...The Producer, a 50-something nerd whose super-powers were derived from wearing Ed Wood's class ring! His powers were all um...idiosyncratic. For example, to activate his resistant defense, he yelled, "Stunt double!", and a stunt double appeared and took the damage for him...not a real person, just a special effect of his power. When the Producer took damage, he yelled for makeup...and a horde of makeup artists surrounded him and fixed him up (aid to REC, or perhaps simplified healing). His command "Cut!" froze the heroes in their tracks, and "That's a wrap," was the incantation needed for an entangle--with 9mm film. "Fight scene!" got us swarmed by hordes of apparent normals, all trying to attack us in the most spectacular ways possible...again, just a special effect of the Producer's powers, and not real people. But we weren't sure, so we were having to be very careful. And in the meantime, the villain wouldn't shut up! He kept up this demented cliched "producer" monologue throughout the fight..."They say I'm insane, but they're fools, shallow fools who cannot encompass the splendor of my vision. I will rise from my celluloid nest like a phoenix from the ashes and the theatrical world will be awed by my talent--" and so on and so on. We finally dealt with the Producer by using NND attacks...he screamed for stunt doubles and no-one responded. It was pitiful, but by that time, we weren't feeling very sympathetic. Oh, he was driving the three PC heroes--and the players--nuts! But we got him..."Th-th-that's all, folks!" ...and then it was our GM's turn.
  14. Re: Super Names The low-powered team of high-school heroes Killer Rabbit and the Safety Leech. Killer Rabbit--Desiree Delisandra Trudeau, athletic high-school princess with superleap and 1 pip of HKA. (She's got very long, sharp fingernails.) She's secretly in love with her partner and friend Bernie, and none of her 'popular' friends can understand why she lets such a loser hang out with her. Safety Leech--Bernie Kuppleman, bright, nerdy, bespectacled teenaged boy with supress vs kinetic energy. He's in love with Desiree, but doesn't think she'd ever consider him as more than a friend. Not afraid to wade into the middle of a nasty accident in order to 'leech' the dangerous kinetic energies down to 'safe' levels. Kid Charlemagne--presence attacks and a fierce HTH combatant. Natural tactician...for all that she's only about 14 years old. Lady Gray--Miriam Blakely, strong willed lady detective with telekinesis and teleport customised as shadow manipulation
  15. Ferret-based? No ferret, but I did have a Mechwarrior character whose Enhanced Attribute: Dex was due to having mongoose DNA spliced in to her code. She had a tendency to chatter when upset, and she did bite...but her mech bit a lot harder!
  16. No scales yet. In our Champions-based "Legion of Superheroes" game, my first character was Hidden Dragon, a martial artist with invisibility. She wasn't Asian, despite the name and the fact that she spoke fluent Mandarin. Her mentor and teacher in the martial arts was the Chinese dragon Lio Shiu Long--the Willow Dragon. Later (of course) it turned out that the Willow Dragon was my character's father. I should have been expecting that, since Chinese dragons are natural magicians and shapeshifters. Hidden Dragon doesn't have any draconic physical features--not yet, anyway--but she has an inhuman DEX and SPD, and an incredible mastery of Tao Lio Shiu Long, "the Way of the Willow Dragon." It's a dragon-style martial art modeled on the movements and powers of the Willow Dragon himself. He invented it and of course trained his daughter in it; it's a 5000-year-old style, and the two if them are now the only living practitioners. So Hidden Dragon _moves_ like a dragon and _fights_ like a dragon, but so far, no scales. (And in traditional style of Chinese legends, Hidden Dragon's arch enemy--back in the 20th Century--was a drug lord and sorcerer calling himself Kevin Wing...who turned out to be half-dragon as well, and her older half-brother!)
  17. Q) Why is that fat pseudo-Siamese cat going cross-eyed? [bTW, Dr. Anomaly's cat does this] A) Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty.
  18. Hello, Doctor And there's my friendly uber-nerd now...
  19. Fastest hands in the game I'm simply speechless...
  20. Twenty MINUTES? Argus--I am humbled by the might of the Master of Geek-Fu. You built a Champions character in TWENTY MINUTES? Seriously, I'm impressed; it always takes me forever, and I have a friendly uber-nerd helping me!
  21. What _wouldn't_ my characters do? Gamma Girl wouldn't: -betray the Legion of Superheroes (and YOU thought that "Novice Legionnaire" tag was just a joke) -dishonor Lady Gray, her Batman-style mentor and guardian -have any more casual 30th Century sex -let Vandal Savage escape unpunished (I'd say she wouldn't let him escape alive, but he's immortal and he always comes back) Hidden Dragon wouldn't: -fail the Legion of Superheroes (yes, she's another Legion PC and transplanted 20th Century girl) -dishonor the Willow Dragon (her father and master) or his teachings -betray the two men she loves (Element Lad and Brainiac 5) -ever believe that she's a hero -forgive Gordon Sinclair (her abusive foster-father)
  22. Q) In the literary version of the game "Clue," who killed fantasy literature in the conservatory and what weapon did he use? A) A madman has the strength of ten--and I have the strength of ten madmen.
  23. My first Champions character A duplicator--two forms--with the rather obvious name of Gemini. Fairly fast, flew and had an energy blast (justification unknown). Costume was a rip-off of the original black-and-white outfit worn by Alpha Flight's Aurora (I only had a black pen to color in the picture with). Her duplicate, Dreamer, was a jack-of-all-trades psychic, with a little of this, a little of that and a LOT of mental illusions. Of course, this was back when duplicates had to be _exactly_ like the original...but we apparently missed that bit in the book. Following this experience, I tried running a Champions game of my own...the 3rd Ed rulebook was pale blue and very slim. Unfortunately, I hadn't realized that regular attacks--say a 10d6 Energy Blast--did BODY as well as STUN. My PCs repeatedly attacked their foe, a villain called Absolute Zero, doing massive dice of damage, but they just couldn't kill her--because I hadn't read the rules on damage carefully enough, and didn't know that there was supposed to be a little BODY associated with all those dice of STUN. Finally, in frustration, one of my more murderously-inclined players had her character pick up a pointy stick and hammer it into the downed foe's head. And her question to me: "So tell me, does that finally do some REAL damage?"
  24. Q) So what _exactly_ is the result of the infamous Liverpool kiss? A) Forgive me, Lord Justice.
  25. Q) What's the difference between William "Refrigerator" Perry and Jeffery Dahmer? A) I bled all that kind of blood long ago.
