  1. Re: I Have In My Hand A List... One interesting possibility for McCarthyism in a world with supers is that he made the mistake of bringing a respected hero (who had no Communist ties) before the Committee, and broadcasting the session. IRL, it was the first and only HUAC broadcast that basically killed it, or so I've read. Without McCarthy's witch-hunts, the hunt for communist agents (a real threat back then) was taken over by people who were actually competent, and a new agency is formed, one with the goal of tracking superhuman activities, and assisting those supers who want to, to either retire quietly or to work covertly. Most supers figure it's a good idea, and they go "under the radar." A few, of course, don't, but the impression with most people is that supers are mostly gone. This lasts until about the mid-60s, when social activism comes back in a big way, and the new supers decide they don't want to hide their light under a bushel. And thus, the new age of supers begins.
  2. Re: Background Cliches Actually, those are pretty scarce in the source fiction. Scantily-clad superheroines, on the other hand... Look at the late 70s/early 80s Legion for excellent examples.
  3. Re: Background Cliches 12. Most female supers are major exhibitionists.
  4. Re: Background Cliches 8. At least half of all super-beings seem to need a long course of psychotherapy. 9. Even if they don't need therapy, most of them have some kind of serious trauma attached to their origins.
  5. Re: WWYCD?: The Shakedown. Champion Wind: Puts an arrow from the lightning bow into the wall by the guy trying to sneak off; a 2d6 RKA should make an impressive hole in the wall. "Don't move. Any of you. Now, Mr. Big Guns, start explaining. And you, Mr. Back Door, get back in here." Faye: Throws a TK Entangle on the sneaker. With Invisible Power Effects (Sight and Sound) and Concentration Throughout. She'll just lean up against the door frame, all nice and casual. Nothing unusual about someone from a rather poor background looking into a pawnshop, after all. As soon as AR is close enough to grab the sneaker, she'll let go. Red: She wouldn't have much of a clue about this one. If she decided to act, she'd just grab the sneaker. Subtle isn't in her vocabulary. Phoenix: Would go around back to snag the sneaker. Serena: Would use her abilities to scare Mr. Sneaker out of his mind.
  6. Re: Iyo: The Most Underrated Or Underused Character In Comics Depending on the writers, the Green Lanterns have often been used far, far below their potential. The green light can do almost anything the Lantern wants, subject to the limits of imagination and strength of will, but 90+% of the time, they seem to be just run of the mill flying blasters. This has improved since Kyle Rayner became the Green Lantern, but still...
  7. Re: How to build a safety net Extra PD, UAA, only to reduce falling damage, OAF: Safety Net.
  8. Re: WWYCD:Nightmares of Past Futures Red: Blank look. Her knowledge of such things is fairly minimal. Once someone explains it in terms she can grasp, her reaction will be simple: "Be nice. Girl will be nice." Faye: She'll do her best to be an unofficial "big sister" to the supposed future dictator. Of course, she's not going to take these jokers at face value; she'll either perform or have someone she trusts perform deep telepathic scans to be sure these guys aren't just nuts. If they aren't nuts, well... see above, for Dr. Pain. "Yo, stupids. Ever watched 'Star Trek?' Didn't think so. You mess with this kid again and you're lunch meat. Clear? Good." Subtle isn't in her vocabulary. Champion Wind: As Champion Wind, she won't do much. As herself, she'll try to be a friend to the girl, so that if she does rise to power she won't become an evil dictator. Ika: "Unh?" She's bascially a cave girl. Good luck explaining time travel to her. Crystal: Well, the staggering wealth of the Kaine family and the huge array of contacts they have sholud be enough to find the family breadwinner a job somewhere else. Crystal herself might or might not take a personal interest in the girl, but she'll put the word out that it would be advisable to see that she grows up fairly happily.
  9. Re: Your PCs might be Underpowered if... they can lose gunfights... to an equal number of six year olds with squirt guns.
  10. Re: VPPs: Your experiences I don't see how that counts as a limit, when a normal VPP doesn't let you exceed the pool's size in AP anway.
  11. Nexus and I had a disagreement on the subject of VPPs; in his experience they're too often used to play "anything you can do, I can do better," but in mine they're more often used for "Can anyone here... never mind. Jacknife!" So this got me to wondering, in your experience, how are field-changeable VPPs most commonly used? Do they more often help games, or hurt them?
  12. Re: Making Money Hmm... that would explain "Voice of the Fire."
  13. Re: Making Money That's why I'm trolling for notions. One I came up with (since she's skilled in both woodworking and metalworking) was the notion of having her use fine TK to carve fantastic statues in wood or shape them from metal. Cunning intaglios in cedar; statuettes of spun lead that seem to move and breathe.
  14. Re: Making Money Faye wouldn't be looking to raise her (and her family's) wealth to the point where it wolud be necessary to buy the "Money" perk; currently, they're at the low end of "Ordinary" and she'd be entirely content to be nearer the upper end - around the US$50,000/year range.
  15. Re: Jane's Superhumans Exactly right. I chose that example precisely because it's simple, straightforward, easy to analyse statistically, and I've personally seen it happen.
  16. Re: Jane's Superhumans And the ejected person promptly goes to the media, saying in essence "I was blacklisted for winning," and challenges the casinos' managements to justify their actions. If they accept the challenge, they'll have to admit that they've effectively blacklisted someone for winning; if they refuse it, then they've tacitly admitted it, at least as far as public perception goes. If they sue for slander, they'll have to prove that they had sufficient grounds for blacklisting - and as I say, any precognitive with two brain cells can pass a test that "proves" they aren't precognitive.
  17. My character is an upcoming campaign is a powerhouse psychic, mostly a telepath and telekinetic. with some metasensory abilities. She's got a 200+ point VPP (max. 80 points in any given power), a number of vocational skills (woodworking, metalworking, electronics, drafting), and she's from a rather poor background. She's just recently discovered her powers, and naturally she wants to find a non-criminal way to make money off them. At the same time, however, she want's to keep a low profile for the time being. Oh, and she's 17.
