  1. Re: [splinter thread] I have a problem with the way it is done: Dispel Foci Yep. Like, if you have a "Lightning Blast" and you are standing in an steel armored car, and use your lightning blast to blow the doors off, you better be prepared for a shock. At the same time, you can use your Lightning Blast to jump start a car. If you use a flame blast in an air-tight room, you better have LS: Self-Contained Breathing, because you just used up all the oxygen. Likewise, you can use your flame blast at low intensity to keep a group of normals stranded on an high mountain glacier warm. If you have a gun, it can be taken away. But you can also hand it to someone else, or use it as a hammer, or whatever. I think that Special Effects should have some effect. That's all.
  2. Re: [splinter thread] I have a problem with the way it is done: Dispel Foci I probably wouldn't allow such a construction in my game. Why would a fedora give you flash defense?
  3. Re: [splinter thread] I have a problem with the way it is done: Dispel Foci It's never really come up, but frankly, I doubt I'd allow someone to buy a focus that isn't a Focus. I tend to run a fairly "realistic" game, and I don't think cinematic guns have much place in my campaign.
  4. Re: Good "Four of a Kind"'s... I'm working on that right now. I've got Chalice (Cups) done. Next will be Sword.

  6. Re: A ? About the Images Power Depends on what you mean by plausible. It's a plausible use of the Human Torch's powers in a Stan Lee/Jack Kirby FF tale, when most people only knew of mirages as "hallucinations of an oasis" from episodes of I Dream of Jeannie. (edit: that sounds harsh, but what I mean is that it's plausible if you're doing a tongue-in-cheek homage to the 60's comics and following the "anything that sounds like scientific explanation is a scientific explanation" trope). But if you mean plausible in a "makes sense to anyone who graduated a high school science program after 1945", then no, it's not plausible. A mirage is only a rippling distortion in the air causes by heat reflecting off the ground. It can, from a distance, appear as water on the horizon, but no-one would ever mistake a mirage for anything other than rippling water. You would never mistake a mirage for a tree, or a car, or a person for example.

  8. Re: Well blow me down This conversation moved to another thread where we have been discussing that very possibility.

  10. Re: [splinter thread] I have a problem with the way it is done: Dispel Foci No, but it takes far more damage to knock out the average minion. A 9d6 Stun Only EB (45 AP) won't knock out the average minion in one shot, while the Anti-Tech Spell will destroy most of an agents gear in one shot, and will remove a power a turn from most battlesuits, etc.

  12. Re: [splinter thread] I have a problem with the way it is done: Dispel Foci I'm not sure what you mean. Breaking gadgets and ruining focuses are listed uses of Dispel in FRED. It's in the first paragraph of the power description. What is this mandate, if not this? Cybernetics should be Restrainable, and treated like focuses. If you allow characters to buy guns without buying them as focuses, then you have to figure something else out. How do you deal with people using the disarm manuever against a non-focused power with the special effect "Gun"? Same problem.
  13. Re: [splinter thread] I have a problem with the way it is done: Dispel Foci Dispel, for one very simple reason: a destroyed focus should not regenerate at the rate of 5 AP/turn. That doesn't make any sense at all. If a focus is destroyed, it should stay destroyed. Though in some cases, I can see using a KA instead. The problem with KA is that it can't be used to simulate things like an "Anti-Tech Spell" or "EMP Pulse" that simultaneously removes all tech powers (since it would have to target every single focus simulataenously), and that using a KA on a Focus is called shot while using a Dispel Vs Focus is not a called shot. A better question is "How would a player justify defining their character's powers as tech that cannot be destroyed, taken away, or otherwise affected?" I'd want to see how that question is answered first.
  14. Re: Breaking a Mental Defense Force Wall Much more efective is this guy: Cause Anuerysm: Killing Attack - Ranged 1d6-1 (vs. PD), Invisible Power Effects (Fully Invisible; +1/2), Line Of Sight (+1/2), Indirect (Any origin, any direction; +3/4), No Normal Defense (Lack of a Organic Brain; +1), Does BODY (+1), Continuous (+1), +9 Increased STUN Multiplier (+2 1/4) Cost: 80 He laughs at your pathetic Force Wall! HAH HAH!
  15. Re: Well blow me down That's not how it's being used. In the example given, it removes any KB Resistance for that attack only. A drain would remove the KB Resistance for much longer than that. Dispel vs Focuses is well-established by precedent in published products, and drain vs focuses makes little or no sense at all. For example, some bricks have a trick called Breaking that functions as dispel vs focused powers. They grab the focus and crush it, and the power is useless until the focus is replaced. A drain wouldn't make any sense, since a drain has a return rate and isn't all-or-nothing. I mean, if I crush your gun in my hand, it makes no sense at all for the gun to be okay again after a few minutes. Also, dispelling Persistent powers is nowhere near as effective as draining them. Dispelled non-focus powers can be turned back on immediately, drained powers cannot be. Dispell is all-or-nothing, drain is incremental. They are very, very different powers, and in many cases dispels make far more sense than drains.
  16. Re: Favorite Television Characters Nice, not very familliar with the show, so I don't know how accurate it is, but nice. What's with all the ** though? I've noticed a couple of people do that (or maybe it's always you and I didn't notice). I keep looking to the bottom of the page to find out what the ** refers to, but it looks like you're using them as spacers?
  17. Re: How to make a Taser Yeah, you could do that, but I usually handwave that stuff off. As long as the slot as something in it, I'm happy. In play, I'm pretty fast and loose with what defends from NNDs, and really just try to play it by SFX. Like, someone with an "electrical body" power probably shouldn't be affected by a taser either, but I'm not going to bother writing it down.
  18. Re: A newb with a problem Analizer. It's a combat analyzer. A combat analizer would make combats more anal, and nobody wants that. (This is not a spelling flame. An honest mistake was made, it just happens to be a very funny mistake. I repeat: This is not a spelling flame.)
  19. Re: Favorite Television Characters Nitpicking is fine, especially when it's a supported nitpick. I agree, he shoudl have SS: Physics, probably Based on Int (with his overall levels, that would give him a base roll of 17-, which is Really Freaking Good).
