  1. Re: HERO 5th LARP? Once again, not to bump the thread, we should have the hero system LARP basic play test document posted by the end of summer. We are doing some additional play testing to work out the bumps in the road. Some basics are as follows: To simplify combat (I know, weird, simplifying combat with hero seems an oxymoron, but with a Live Action game, simplified combat is a necessity) all powers are build with the standard effect rule... We tried a thing we dubbed the "dice-o-magic, but it was just too clunky for LARPing. Combat order is handled the same way - on the twelve count. We (for streamlining) did away with the post-12 recovery. Combat took just about 3 hours.. Not LARP friendly. Basic mechanic: rock, paper, scissors. Winner wins, loser loses. Ties are resolved by comparing numbers as described in the main rule books. We allow ONE retest per roll. If you suspect that your standard effect number is more than double the defending stat/skill/power you can attempt a crush... It allows you one retest. If you are wrong... You fail for overconfidence... Thus far, it works well... Once we get everything transferred from composition notebooks, well post the write up. Then we need playtestrs
  2. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Sorry... Thread derail... Pulp HERO with heavy cthuloid presence... "Timber... Men in black trench coats don't go 'squish'" ******** Frank has been exposed to no less than 6 mythos images this evening and is on his way to a permanent stay in the loonie bin. (all through his own doing) Jeff: Frank, I hate to tell you... Those aren't chicken thieves? Frank: what are they? Jeff: from here, I can't be absolutely certain, but they look a lot like deep ones. Frank: and what are they doing? Jeff: they appear to be eating chickens. Frank: did they PAY for them? Jeff: god, I hate you ************* when dealing with a midget psychic. "Hey, did you hear? There's a small medium at large!?" The same night, they are at the diner and they stumble across the very target of their search (said mystic). Waitress: what will you have, Hun? Small medium: bring me a triple with a double order of fries and the biggest coke you have. I'm famished! Timber: small medium at large... Super size me? ***************** The adventurers find a scroll case. Timber goes to open it. Hoshi, a self styled Chinese American "samurai" and Frank, the chicken farmer are present. Timber: this kinda makes me feel funny. Frank: good funny, or bad funny? Timber: kinda like I need mental floss. (snip) Timber: so... Either of you guys ever heard of this hastur guy? *pointing a spot in the scroll* Frank and Hoshi look at each other for a moment... Hoshi: I fall on my sword. Frank: ya, know what? I fall on his sword, too.
  3. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... I've been in that very situation. I am a LARGE man - 6'9"...used to be 380... Dr Anomaly can attest to the fact that I am/was build like a ... well... brick elimination house. At work, I went through three of the standard chairs before they bought one for my size... little known fact, standard chairs are rated for about 220 max... It took one snapping and dropping me face first into my desk, breaking my nose and keyboard before they did it.
  4. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Max has just entered the workshop of our golden age gadgeteer. Maxwell gerabaldi: everyone, aside from me, that has held this piece of metal has blown up. Glitch: *blink, blink* I'm not giving you a refund.
  5. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... I loved paranoia back in the day... Used to get in trouble in junior high for coughing "commie" when anyone in class asked for clarification... The gaming group and I shared all our classes so we thought it was awesome...
  6. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... It's worse than that... Genetically modified human space pirate... And to be fair... The marines WERE out to slaughter the player party...
  7. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... After finding a multi chamber grenade launcher (think really big revolver) and a case of color coded grenades (with no documentation as to their function) the boarding party readies themselves to charge into a room full of enemy space marines. Caligula has loaded one grenade of each color into the cylinders and slammed it shut. Keep in mind Caligula: okay... You guys go in. I've got you covered. Mariko: whoa, there cowboy! What makes you think I want to be in the room while your lobbing random grenades in after me!? Isunne: oh, these aren't random at all. These are very specific grenades, they are the ones we found in the box. Caligula (looking down the barrel to confirm the color coding on the loaded grenade) yeah! Like he said! They're not random. This one's red!
  8. Re: 300 anti-hydrogen atoms contained for 16 minutes Bob, They are worth the price. I have a netbook for my writing. I just happen to have this with me while surfing.(you can't beat the portability and battery life) I had it trained. After you cancel an auto correct after a certain number of times, the new spelling is automatically added to your dictionary. I had to reset it because of an experiment in app creation that I tried. The end result was that I had to abort to factory reset. Needless to say, I was typing so fast that I didn't notice the bubble pop up and had forgotten that the dictionary was reset, too. However... I am also ADHD and dyslexic so I can say with all confidence... Nanny nanny boo boo, stick your head in doo doo. *wink*
  9. Re: 300 anti-hydrogen atoms contained for 16 minutes Bobgreenwade Btw... I am on an iPad, and if you have ever used an I-device for typing anything in any length, you will know that the darn thing has its own sens of grammar... Thank you so very much for being a grammar nazi and detracting from the conversation... Let us assume that it was my mistake, you know what I mean... However, you have my apology for my egregious breach of syntax and grammar and will attempt to avoid doing that in the future.
  10. Re: Local game store and distro Cool... I have let Jeremy know all of this... Thank you cry much for your time
  11. Re: 300 anti-hydrogen atoms contained for 16 minutes Accordeing to my sources, it's a byproduct of particle colliders, not reactors. I could be wrong... But my research indicates otherwise... If I am, please provide citation so I can advance my understanding
  12. Re: Planets not orbiting stars Repped!
  13. Re: A real laser pistol? Power from vacuum? Photons affecting more than one electro Exotic vacuum states... (the basis for zero point theory)... According to even the proponents, would require a perfect vacuum... We can't get that in atmo... Not yet at least... Based on that very fact, it is bunk... However, zero point, as described by the math, isn't perpetual motion. According to the (supposed) physics, it is invoking an exotic vacuum state that release the energy of the background radiation field, (millions of years of energy just being flung into space by the stars, etc) in the form of light and heat and more energetic forms as well... Even space itself is not a perfect vacuum, so I don't think we'll ever see it
  14. Re: 300 anti-hydrogen atoms contained for 16 minutes Antimatter, unless we can find a natural source, isn't feasible for one reason... It is only produced in high energy collisions in particle accelerators. That makes it extremely energy intensive. However, as a stored energy alternative for things like weaponry and space travel, it is exceptionally attractive as it's energy density is the highest of anything we have managed to produce thus far. Even if we can master it's use, there will never be any use of it to produce power planet side (at least on earth) due to the restrictions in it's creation. It is much more likely that we'll be able to get fusion reactors working. However, the decay of non-accreting black holes is mathematically predicted to create antimatter as a side effect... If this is fact, then we may actually be able to harvest it... However, I believe this is about as likely as someone finding the plans to make a working tesla gravity repulser or wireless energy transmitter.
  15. Re: Planets not orbiting stars While it is possible for planetary gravitation can be enough to throw planets out of a system... The size of planets described makes that highly unlikely, as they are the ones who do the shoving. It is far more likely, if they were part of a system originally, that something much more massive was responsible... Especially if they are in orbit around each other... That indicates they came out into the black together... And if not, the odds are (no pun intended) astronomical. Considering the mass of the big one, the possibility of both options bein in place is statistically significant as that planet is nearing the breaking point between remaining a planet and HAVING to ignite due to pressure. As for dark matter... I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but according to all the information I can find, it seems that curreent theories state that dark matter, like super strings are an eleven diminutional construct that does not extend into the l,w,h dimensionality, therefor only contributing mass and gravity. I could be misreading it all... Personally, I am thinking of taking a vacation after reading some of this as it hurts the brain... Even in someone who knows the math... So I think I will go be a non-event mass with a quantum probability if zero for the next 8-10 hours... Rep to the person that recognizes my last refence WITHOUT looking it up!
  16. Re: Local game store and distro Thing is, it's been since October... From day one, the distributor has stated that they cannot get the core books and some of the others as well... But the owner doesn't want to carry any of it without the core books... Have you been out of stock since last year?
  17. Re: Local game store and distro I will advise them of it... Though it is weird as hell...the distro states they can get the basic book two, but not the character book... An they have ordered the hseg and ma books... And our distributor has gone above and beyond in the past...so it seems odd...
  18. Re: Planets not orbiting stars Two options are likely, according to the text books we have over here in the astrophysics department... 1) born in stellar nurseries, not enough mass to ignite the fusion process and 2) (more likely) a near pass with another stellar mass object moving at a fast velocity pulled the planets away from the mother stat and left them lost out there in the black
  19. Re: Hero system equipment guide Okay, and that was very negative...I should point out that there are thousands upon thousands of weapons, gadgets, etc through the book. I feel it was worth the investment...just that at todays prices, I would like to see a little better quality control on them...I know appearance is nothing, and have enjoyed games formatted just in word... But when you go to the effort to add them, why not have it all the way... As it stars, I would buy it again without hesitation...
  20. I got mine today, and I have to say, I was a bit disappointed... Not by the content at all... I love what I got...however, the quality was not up to the standards I have been used to. I am a bit of s perfectionist and have very high expectations... And these have always been met by the heero books... So my stuff may seem nitpicky, but here it is... 1) the pages that are almost full black are blotchy... The black is not a high quality print and it shows. 2) on those pages, the bleed was set near the edge, but not off it, so there is a border of white... And that border is not square with the page and is uneven all the way around. 3) every page that has a page number hex has the printing cut off at the edge of the hex... That was what I caught at first glance... There may be more, and if so, I will post it as I find it
  21. I just came from my local gaming store. I offered them some demos of hero, but they turned me down. They did not want demos of stuff they cannot get into the store. This has been very upsetting to me as it's been an issue since they opened in October. I know the owner personally, so I know this isn't misleading or a dodge... Is there a way that this stor can get direct supply? It is the only gaming store in the entire new Orleans area, and I would like to see a thriving hero community here... But if they can't get the books at home, it is unlikely to be the case.
  22. Re: Psionic tracking it's like a blood hound, kind of... the psi-hunter establishes a "lock" with psychometry (holding an object of the target's to gain a resonance to track) and then he knows the general direction to the target... this does not take into account specifics like the jump routes, etc.. it's as the crow flies.
  23. Re: Psionic tracking The problem with mind scan is that it is modified by the number of minds in the area of searching... and within the many light years possible that we want this power to work over... that would be such a negative modifier that it doesn't work within the framework of the campaign, really... That and it requires an active search... we want it to be...well... automatic after he has "scented" his prey
  24. Writing up a character that has the ability to us psychometry to get the mental "scent" of a character and then track them... anywhere... There is a network of jump gates.... and the player wants to be able to get a general direction towards the target with concentration. I know tracking is a skill and you can use enhanced senses for it... but how would one build this supernatural tracking ability across the stars?
  25. Re: Vampire: the masquerade style blood pool Chris: it's all good... it's not common knowledge, but I have asperger's syndrome, so by my very nature, I am terribly specific in my quests for knowledge... I want to understand the hows and the whys so that I can reason it out for myself later on... In this one, I had fixated on replicating the effects instead of running with the spirit of the thing... Which is an issue with me from time to time... And I do appreciate the discussion and information. HONESTLY
