  1. Seattle's Thierry Rautureau passes He was the charismatic chef of Seattle's top-end restaurant for years. My in-laws knew him and patronized his place regularly, which was my first introduction to truly splendid food.
  2. Sigh, not gonna get to the gore porn. 2100 words today, but with gaming coming right after dinner I've got to break off and do household things.
  3. If you can find cartoons by Berke Breathed from his college strip, The Academia Waltz, I heartily recommend them. He started as the cartoonist for the campus paper the summer before I arrived at UT/Austin for grad school. There were some things in that strip that are raunchier than his post-college strips, but that's in the nature of college newspapers. His artwork also evolved (got better) over time. A couple of characters made the transition from pre- to post-college. Steve Dallas is the principal one of those. Opus and all the child characters like Binkley are strictly post-college, but Opus is clearly derived from the only nonhuman character in Waltz, a dog named Rabies.
  4. Yow. 1700 words so far today and I haven't even started on the gore porn I promised myself this morning that I'd get to today.
  5. 1800 words today, aided by the loss of the afternoon TTRPG session to power outage.
  6. Today's FTFRPG session was skronked when the power went out 20 minutes before the session was to begin. Estimated restoration time is still two hours off.
  7. I realized after that post that I was, in fact, in attendance in the Kingdome the first time the Mariners got as close as they have ever come, game 6 of the 1995 ALCS against the Indians. Sigh.
  8. Over here, it refers to ... one of the entries in a table at this link. Now, it may still fit....
  9. Gingerbread. And not just houses.
  10. When the ancients could (and did) deduce the sphericity of Earth from geometry and naked-eye observations of lunar eclipses ... only a dogged dedication to the only thing they know ... wanton stupidity ... remains to explain those who cling to the flat earth idea.
  11. As John Fogerty once said, "But you knew that."
  12. Imbecilic ownership will always make their own problems, as Seattle found in the Ken Behring era.
  13. Gonna make me do this again, eh? Again ... Zuul NT: late-year seasonal foods. Christmas and New Years' are in scope; so is Thanksgiving. Might be other holidays in there as well.
  14. Made two loaves of family gingerbread this afternoon (they're in the oven as I type). We had milk go sour, and baking takes the chill off the house, and we're coming up on the season.
  15. I'm ok with leaving the SEC as the SEC, because SEC also stands for "Securities and Exchange Commission", which is nothing but money, and that's what that conference has been all about for decades.
  16. John Hadl wore #21, but that was back before the advent of disco heralded the evolution of civilization from the Steel Age into the Sewage Age.
  17. Yeah, if you could push that into a gif and get the pieces to writhe in unspeakable ways, you could make that into the lead creepscene in a movie titled Big Trouble in Small Bowel or something like that.
  18. I want to formally propose that the two college conferences hitherto known as "Big Z", where Z has been a one- or two-digit integer that has finally lost all coupling to reality, be formally renamed to Big Math Is Hard $X and Big Math Is Hard $Z. I do not care which gets which tag. (Personally, I'd prefer that instead of X and Z they both used F in keeping with the academic strength associated with Division I intercollegiate athletics, but that's mere detail.)
  19. And the Rangers now lead Arizona in the World Series, 3 games to 1.
  20. Rest in peace to four-time All-Star and World Series champion Frank Howard, who passed away yesterday (Oct 30) at the age of 87.
