  1. Undue snark? Ahh, there's the reason. I had started watching the NFL a couple years before that, but starting summer 1968 I was out of US TV range, so I missed that. It's nice that someone at the league office has a sense of history
  2. I just add a half-cup of chips into the old Fannie Farmer recipe. This was my wife's suggestion some 15 years ago. This recipe doesn't have vanilla or the two spices in it; for that flavor combo we have her family zucchini bread recipe. I also use pecans rather than walnuts (got used to those in my time living in Austin).
  3. Long after-the-fact comment: <sing> We all live in an eldritch horror's dream, eldritch horror's dream, eldritch horror's dream...
  4. Made chocolate chip banana nut muffins this morning, which consisted of making the bread recipe and putting it in muffin tins. (One loaf recipe made 15 muffins, and the baking time had to be reduced by a factor of 3 or so.)
  5. I will repost this when the Christmas 2023 thread is initiated.
  6. Ooooo, if New England fires Belichick, will he retire (he's 71), or will Las Vegas snap him up?
  7. Gilbert Shelton (Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers; Fat Freddy's Cat, and Wonder Wart-Hog!!!)
  8. 6 hours of exposure time on the Keck. Yeesh. (Uranus has only been visited once by spacecraft, Voyager 2 in 1986. Of the 4 jovian planets it visited, Uranus had the poorest set of observations made, because the spacecraft's path through the system was dictated by the need to get a particular gravitational assist in order for the spacecraft to make it to Neptune. (Neptune, being the last specific target, had a much more data-rich pass through the system since there was no need to be careful to get the outgoing trajectory right.)
  9. The Manchester City - Chelsea match this morning (my time) was a real barn-burner. Ended 4-4 on a penalty kick in stoppage time by Chelsea, after MC had gone up in minute 85 on a deflected shot that went in. Neither of the NFL games on after that seemed particularly exciting, so I'm down in my computer cave.
  10. In this era I heartily endorse what you say. I was quoting a joke I read before I was old enough to vote, which puts it >~50 years in the past.
  11. Is the number a QBR in the low teens?
  12. Frank Borman, commander of Apollo 8, dead at age 95 That was the mission on which the epochal Earthrise picture was taken: "Every human but one was in front of the camera."
  13. Hippos hate everything. If you're in Africa and you come across a riverbank that looks like it was mown as close as a golf green, GTF out of there as fast as you can.
  14. As a college instructor who spent time in classrooms, I think I got it twice. I seem to have survived.
  15. Got my vaccination yesterday. Arm is still sore.
  16. A corollary of that: Those who baselessly accuse you of gross misdeeds that may not ever have occurred to you before ... are stating what they would have done in their place.
  17. Does she play with her food at the dinner table?
  18. An entire 747 loaded with the best Anatolian catnip landing in an obscure airport in Wyoming.
  19. Know that feeling. The thing I'm bashing on for this project is Book 3 of a tetrology I first started writing back around 1990. Book 1 was completed but now only exists in a single printed version (disk failures, sigh). A number of handwritten fragments exist for Book 2, a few more of Book 4. Then my kids were born. Then I got full-time teaching duties, and added some administrative ones, and so nothing more got done for 20+ years. Kids are now out of school and I am retired. (Wife has a serious illness now, so there's still significant distractions.) So away we go.... Got a doctor's appointment in an hour, though.
  20. FWIW, I was faculty at Washington State when Leaf was a student there. Didn't have him in any of my classes, though, and neither did anyone I knew. A couple years before and at a different institution, I do remember having a kid who became an NFL quarterback (this guy) in the first big class I taught at a university level (I am leaving out a couple of community college courses here). He did OK. Unfortunately, FERPA prohibits professors talking about students' academics, except for recognized legitimate academic reasons, without explicit written permission of the student. But for that, talking to former profs might give you some insight there. Wouldn't help you with those few people like Otis Sistrunk but those are rare and don't go through the draft anyway.
  21. Writing assignments with deadlines ....
