  1. When a new edition comes out, people buy it, and sometimes they try to port their old characters over, so this is a joking WWYCD based on the new edition coming out within a year.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Things seem perfectly normal, but then some strange things happen one day. Some abilities suddenly get weaker while some others suddenly get stronger. Some of your powers even stop existing, replaced with new powers that you have never heard of before. You even find out that you've forgotten some of your skills, which are now replaced by something new. The strange part is, this is happening to everyone on Earth. You investistigate and somehow find out that this is all because reality is being translated into a new edition, and that there were four editions prior to the reality you have once called home.

    What do you do?

  2. Re: Alien Bonding

Well, here's the take with each of my characters, based on how I think they would handle it.

Sonic Eagle, would undertake the telepathic bond. Not only would it keep the alien sane, but he might be able to use the information provided to get in on any good scoops for the paper he works for.

Lab Rat would also undertake the bond. His black-and-white veiw essentially dictates that he can't just do nothing when there's the opportunity to act. Of course, this bond might open new doorways for technology, yet LR wouldn't quite realize that yet.

Reinard The Fox wouldn't be in this situation normally. He lacks the connections. But if we say he'd have snuck in in listened in on everything out of curiosity, He would decide not to go with it. He's not into all that psychic stuff, and even if he did go with it, he would only be delaying the inevitable crash to insanity, as once he gets back, he might as well be dead to this dimension.

Kitsune Would take up the bond. To a creature of spirit such as her, it's not a big deal.

And for his Debut, Anubis* would take up the bond in order to keep the other alien sane, for much the same reason as Lab Rat. It would be wrong to do so. Of course, this would probably wind up disturbing the alien to some extent. Afterall, when you realize your new buddy sees no moral problem in using the old one's animated corpse for any reason (like, say, to stop an intruding villain), you would be creeped out too.

*Anubis (Real name: Siri), in this case, is an alien mystic (his culture, the Anpu, considers Necromancy an acceptible practice) from the Pesedjet star system. Having interfered with a slave route, he got noticed by the Galactic Guardians and they have him training on Earth in order to learn tactical skills and how to work with others drastically different from himself.

  3. Re: Low-Action Hero?

One of the best games I've played in had confrontations and conflict, but no real violence. The game was played entirely for laughs and was called Teenagers From Outer Space. It runs a simplified Interlok system based on d6 where characters have a Bonk rating that can be reduced by things like surprises, embarassment, overly revealing battle bikinis, jealous girlfriends with mystical mallets, etc. The rule went that once a character was "bonked out" he was out of the scene until it ended. In general, if it was funny, it was allowed.

    Matt "Mike-Pondsmith-fanboy" Frisbee

Still one of my favorite RPGs to this very day.:D

  4. Re: Genres HERO GAMES may want to avoid (intended to be humorous)

Rejected Hero, with a couple of suggestions for builds:

"My spoon is too big!" could be Stretching (1") and HA.

"And now, Angry Ticks Fire out my nipples" would be a standard energy blast.

"I am the Queen of France!" might be shapeshift (Queen of France) with an OAF stomach of convenience.

I am so glad the guy on FREd's cover isn't bleeding from his anus.

  5. Re: Characters you've always liked but who never fulfilled their potential...

Well, for me so far, Reinard The Fox, the living cartoon character/detective modelled loosely from Batman/Daredevil with the wits of Bugs Bunny

He never reached his full potential because of GM's Block and the difficulty in keeping such a disparate team together in any logical manner (there was also a Superman-type and a mystic who seems to be away for a long time.) I've also gotten concerned there may not have been enough attention to the other players as this was an internet game.

  6. Re: Game Design: Champions Online

I will admit, I am seriously in favor of a Turn-based MMO. I can't seem to find any for my budget ($0.00), but I want to know this: How would you handle the infinite possibilities for characters and SFX that makes Champions so darned fun? Not all of us are capable of creating User-content, which would seem neccesary in a Champions MMO.

  7. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

Guardians of Order did a game based on Pokemon/Monster Rancher/Digimon named "Cute and Fuzzy (Cockfighting) Seizure Monsters" Now owned by White Wolf:

you can grab a PDF version here, among other places

    http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=359&it=1

The version that I have is the one that doesn't have "Cockfighting" in the title.

Though it does seem silly that nobody minds Pokemon until you bring up the fact that it's cutesy cockfighting, and then folks complain that you're bastardizing people's childhoods.

  8. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

I think we were primarily working off properties that were video games first. Pokemon was a video game that got an anime/manga about it' date=' whereas Digimon was an anime/manga first then got a licensed video game.[/quote']

Well, actually, if we wanted to get nitpicky, Digimon actually began as a virtual pet toy that pre-dated Pokemon by a couple of years.

Digimon started out as a digital pet called "Digital Monster," similar in style and concept to the Tamagotchi. It was planned by Wiz and released by Bandai on June 26, 1997. The toy began as the simple concept of a Tamagotchi for boys (as Bandai was also the creator of the Tamagotchi). The v-pet is similar to its predecessors, with the exceptions of being much harder and being able to connect to fight other Digimon v-pets. Every owner would start with a Baby Digimon, train it, evolve it, take care of it, and then have battles with other Digimon owners to see who was stronger. The Digimon pet had several evolution capabilities and abilities too, so many owners had many different Digimon. In December, the second generation of Digital Monster was released, followed by a third edition in 1998. Now the new Tamagotchi Digimon is Pendulum that has a total of 9 in the series. Bandai also has released a Non Related Digimon Tamagotchi.

Of course, then came the other stuff. But then, I wouldn't worry too much about that as long as the characters are good.

But yes' date=' if we're going with either one, Renamon is another hottie. I've tried statting her before, but it's a bear to do on 350 without getting overly creative (statting the nearly useless Viximon and giving it Multiforms past 350 points) or, well, the character sucking, though that's relative to the power level ... if you consider Champion level to be 'standard superhero', then you can use Rookie level for thug-beating and Ultimate level for the climactic battles.[/quote']

Any VG character prior to 1990 would be hard to stat out at the standard point level, admittedly.

  9. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

I guess I missed the point (not surprisingly).

I managed to have a single clone survive six sessions of a Paranoia campaign, which folded before my character ever got ganked.

Of course, the character WAS "paranoid"!

Well, I will admit that I am merely offering my interpretation of Paranoia. There are also ways to play it in a very different manner.

  10. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

You could do CoC and beat the Big 'C'. All you have to do is run Titus Crow & his Amazing Friends (AKA Champions meets Call of Cthulhu) as your character(s).

I do not know Titus Crowe, but I think you have a good point.

  11. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

A few possibilities have just come to me for things a campaign may cover:

If Bronze/Iron Age: Would Sprites (Video game characters) have the same civil rights as humans? Joe Schmoe can cast a vote, but can Mario or Ratchet? Wou;ld there likely be a "Sprite Hysteria" given the controversy over Video Games and the fact that the characters have now become a reality.

Other Ages: How would relationships work out? Naturally, we all expect Sly and Carmelita to be lovers, but what about Samus Aran/Master Cheif (still a straight relkationship)? What implications would exist there? And, while they came from the games and now exist from the real world, would Nintendo have to Liscense from Mario, Link, Fox and the others? Would Capcom have to liscense from Megaman or Ryu? What if a given sprite ends up in a situation unfit for the game they originated from, like Mario falsely accused of burglary and murder?

Some interesting things to think about...

  12. Re: Substituting Realities

Very true - let's face it, romantic entanglements in this setting would be... interesting, to say the least. :sneaky:

(Let's face it... best case scenario is finding out that you're Firewing, dating Gravitar. Worst is finding out that you're Firewing, dating Leech.)

Now, I'm sure that some folks may find Leech to be a very attractive paramour.

Most of them would be from Leech's own species.

But yeah, I'd feel sorry for Firewing in that case.
