  1. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

He wouldn't be THE most powerful character available' date=' but playing as Gex would be fun. I really enjoyed those games; and an agile, wisecracking talking lizard who can climb walls (and is constantly quoting movies and T.V.) is smack dab [u']right in the middle[/u] of my comfort zone as far as characters are concerned...

Honestly, I can't imagine a much better fit for me.

Well, I'm glad you find Gex so fitting.

When you think of it, he is actually very much like Spiderman, with a long tongue that makes Gene Simmons (or whoever the guy with the long tongue on Metallica or KISS is) feel insufficient.

  2. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

Just out of curiosity' date=' how would it deal with game series that are more multiversal than sequential? I mean like Final Fantasy, where each game is pretty much in a different setting, or possibly Legend of Zelda, since I know there's at least four different incarnations of Princess Zelda and Link the hero.[/quote']

Well, As Final Fantasy rarely has continuity between its titles, Digital Actualization would probably lead to more characters. For a LoZ type such as Link, the result could be multiple Links, perhaps wach one having a slightly different personality to suit the game they came from.

  3. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

Only if we exclude the already overly fatal games of Paranoia and Call of Cthulhu.

I can see Paranoia games having Darwin Potential, but probably not winning as most players will try to get their characters killed. That's part of the game's point.

Call of Cthulhu, however, may or may not have Darwin potential depending on just how stupid the characters are when they get kacked. Not being able to retreat from Cthulhu in time would not count. Of course, calling Cthulhu a wim and taking him on in a one-on-one match with anything less than some Rifts-level Mega Damage weapons (anything less... = any weapon or handy object) would certainly qualify, if it was funny enough. And if he managed to survive, then he ought to thank the GM for cheating so flagrantly in his favor and sacrificing all the versimilitude in the world.

  4. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

The Surfer wasn't a villain' date=' he was a Herald. They handled it [i']really[/i] well for a franchise out of which I had no expectations. I was stunned.

Ah. My Bad. I didn't watch the second movie since the first was so awful, IMO.

  5. Re: [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

True... but the PCs reaction the first time they see a huge ball of screaming pedestrians' date=' horn-blaring vehicles, shop-frontage-smashing light-poles, etc, rolling down the street towards them would be worth it.[/quote']

I can imagine the Prince of the Cosmos as a villain of that sort, like Silver Surfer in the second Fantastic Four movie (from what I've heard) but with a more noble ambition.

  6. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

I once ran a campaign where superpowers were new, and the PCs were among the first to get them. I had also been very specific in mentioning that the characters did NOT know what their powers were beyond the obvious (i.e. if you have orange, rocky skin, you can guess that you might be tough). Otherwise you had to try things out, or discover your powers in moments of stress, etc.

I was basically running the pre-game, letting each character have some spotlight time to tinker around with their new abilities.

A player, who was -notorious- for metagaming, had added Life Support to his character's repertoire of powers. He described how, after the Event that granted him powers, he had tested himself to see what he could do. He knew he was super-strong because he had lifted a variety of heavy objects. He knew he could fly because he had tried to fly up from the ground in a park one night, and it had worked. And he knew he had Life SUpport because he had STUCK HIS HEAD IN A GAS OVEN and tested it out.

    GM (me): Um...no.

Player: What do you mean? I know I have Life Support. Thats how I found out.

GM: You stuck your head in a gas oven and inhaled the fumes.

    Player: Yeah.

Gm: To see if you had Life Support.

    Player: Yeah.

GM: Well...you didnt. Your character passed out from the fumes with his head in the oven, and is now quite thoroughly dead. Try again.

Player: You cant do that! I bought Life Support!

GM: Yes, but your CHARACTER didnt know that. And anyone who is crazy enough to stick his head in an oven to see IF he has Life SUpport, when he has NO REASON to believe that he would have that -particular- power, is not someone I want running around in my campaign.

    So hes dead.

    Try again :P

You have the right way of dealing with munchkins.

  7. Re: WWYCD: Dumb, Da-Dumb, Dumb, Dumb...

    Well, let's see...

Lab Rat would try to find out who was behind it, and if it was some guy who only planned to make it work on bad folks, maybe congratulate the guy for a good job at making the job easier for the cops. If it is some guy only testing it on the crooks, and then planning to use it on heroes, there will be a problem as Lab Rat will have to fight this villain.

Sonic Eagle would probaby get complacent until he starts noticing that the heroes are also getting affected by this. Then he might do something as it actually becomes a serious concern.

Kitsune would take great amusement in this.

Reinard the Fox would find this oddly familiar at first, but then he would investigate these happenings. Afterall, this is too much in too little time. He wouldn't be surprised if Lyle Lynx had something to do with this, given how cartoony such a scheme like this would be.

  8. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

I like Rolemaster. I prefer it over DnD any day.

I apologize to those offended by my statement of Rolemaster. I personally prefer more cinematic games, with less in the way of complications that get in the way of a good game.

If it is any consolation, I found HARP (a simplified version of RM) to be a much better game, actually consolidating some of the modifiers (though the fact that virtually every action is either nearly impossible or horrifically modified still gets to me.)

  9. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

I feel your pain. I ran a Rolemaster game a few years back. For some reason it seemde whenever I ever I put the group up against a tough villian (a Lich, a War Troll Shaman, high level mages), one of the group would score a critical on the villian very early in the combat & would get the dreaded "stunned and unable to parry". So my big bad villian would go down with a whimper. There is something just not right about a hobbit w/a short bow taking down a war troll in less than 30 seconds.

On the flipside whenever I sent low level flunkies after them, the PC's always got hurt. I used to threaten to send a 1st level orc armed w/a touch after them.

Ah yes... Realistic combat. Why I love HERO but hate games like RoleMaster, The Riddle of Steel, or GURPS (Though I like the setting in SpaceMaster Privateers)

  10. Re: The Super Darwin Awards

Not certain this qualifies as there were no real 'choices' involved, but ...

the character in question had Berserk after taking Body Damage 14- to lose it, 8- to recover. Hence, the no real choices. :)

At any rate, he attacks a villain with a penetrating RKA damage shield with his claws. He craps out on the StunX, and deals no damage to the villain, but he takes a point or two of Body from the damage shield.

Goes berserk, attacks nearest thing: the villain with the damage shield.

Continually, and I do mean CONTINUALLY, craps out on HKA stun Multiplier. Eventually, he kills himself by repeatedly throwing himself at the villain.

I'm afraind that's not really a super darwin. It was mechanics that killed the character, rather than a choice.

  11. Re: Top Signs that you need to rethink your GMing.

You need to rethink your GMing if...

    .........................................................................................................................

...you make your players roll for mundane activities, like brushing their teeth.

...you insist on even including "brushing teeth" in game play.

...you think the Hero System is worthless because "it's too hard to kill player characters." (I was actually told this by a game store employee/GM.)

...every female character in your game is guaranteed to get captured, sexually assaulted, and impregnated by a bad guy within two months of game play. (Same game store employee/GM was guilty of doing this in his games.)

Sounds like this could be a Fatalite you're talking about.
