  1. Re: [Hooks] News articles that could be Pulp Adventures From Annanova(?) Dog-size rats take over power station Rats the size of dogs which can even eat through concrete are threatening to plunge parts of Montenegro into darkness. Workers at a hydroelectric power station on the River Piva say they are too scared to tackle rodents who are also gnawing their way through cables. One worker told the local daily newspaper Vijesti: "They are horrific. Coming face to face with a rat the size of a small dog is terrifying. We're all too scared to go inside the power station. "There are thousands of them and they have eaten through all the cables inside the dam walls and are burrowing lots of holes inside it. We are afraid the dam might collapse. We have no idea how to deal with them." Local authorities are meeting to try and find a way to deal with the giant rats. A spokesman said: "It's like something out of a James Herbert book, they are even eating through concrete."
  2. Re: [Hooks] News articles that could be Pulp Adventures Maltese Falcon Stolen From Restaurant Wed Feb 14, 2007 12:18pm ET27 By Michael Kahn SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Where's Sam Spade when you need him? Thieves have stolen a copy of the bird statue at the heart of "The Maltese Falcon" from the San Francisco restaurant used as a setting for the 1941 film classic starring Humphrey Bogart as the rough-and-tumble private detective. The small, black figure was swiped over the weekend along with 20 vintage books, including copies of the 1930 Dashiell Hammett novel on which the film is based. John Konstin, whose restaurant John's Grill bills itself as the "Home of the Maltese Falcon," said the thief broke into the case displaying the statue over the weekend. Konstin is offering a $25,000 reward for the replica's return. While the statute is not the original movie prop, Konstin said he was offering such a big reward because this copy of the Maltese Falcon was signed by a cast member from the Bogart film. "We want it back because of the historical and literary significance," Konstin said in a telephone interview. "It means a lot to us." The novel is considered the most famous example of hard-boiled fiction and was a major influence on writers like Raymond Chandler. The movie helped define the film-noir tough-guy hero of the 1940s and 1950s. Continued... © Reuters 2007. All Rights Reserved.

  9. Re: Nicktoons Presents: Skyland Over the weekend, I caught an episode where the kids accompany their "pirate" captain to find an old abandoned water storage station, to replenish their water supply. Unfortunately, the reason the Sphere abandoned the station was that the robot that they built to harvest water (a Large spider-like robot) began to harvest the inhabitants, since they were ... "mostly water". Lots of tension as the brave rebels scatter around the complex as the robot tries to "harvest" them. Big fun! jak

  17. Re: '45 Psychobilly Retropocalypse I'm going to have to do a little more research on the music of the era, 1940s-1950s rock n' roll and rockabilly. There's some interesting one-page references into the city settings (Chicago, New York, Detroit, Dallas, and Nova Berlin, a Nazi zeppelin city) and some cool references in the back for monsters (albino aligators/crocs, mutant locust swarms)... pretty inventive. jak
  18. Hey all, Has anybody seen this game? I just picked up the PDF (and book) from RPGNow, and I'm having a laugh riot with the game world. The system is a dice pool game, but there's enough there to use Hero with easy. It reminds me of Mad Max meets Army of Darkness meets B-Movie Cinema meets Pulp meets Thundarr the Barbarian meets Gamma World. 24. Re: [Hooks] News articles that could be Pulp Adventures In the hopes that links won't break, I've decided to post some small articles... For Sale: Rare Dinosaur Fossil LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- An exceptionally well-preserved 65 million year-old fossilized dinosaur nest with some broken eggs exposing tiny skeletons is up for auction in Los Angeles on Sunday. The nest of raptors, fierce predatory dinosaurs, is expected to fetch between $180,000-$200,000. "It is probably one of the finest dinosaur egg nests in the world. For the tiny skeletons still to be inside the eggs, folded up beautifully like this, means that they had to be almost ready to hatch," said Thomas Lindgren, consulting director of Natural History for auctioneers Bonhams and Butterfields. Lindgren said the 22-egg nest, encased in sandstone and containing 10 complete embryos, originated in China. It had been in the hands of private collectors in Asia for the past 20 years before being sold to an American. Tens of thousands of dollars have been spent on scientific preparation and studies to determine exactly which of the 6-8 known species of small raptor the nest belonged. That will be revealed in a 2007 academic paper now being prepared. The auction, which also includes several prehistoric skeletons and dinosaur bones, teeth and partial nests, comes at a time of renewed international interest in dinosaurs, particularly in Asia where several nations are pushing ahead with museum building programs. "Dinosaurs are hotter than ever. It is a very collectible market especially for higher quality specimens," Lindgren said. Lindgren said the nest may remain in private hands rather than going to a museum, at least initially. "Unfortunately, most museums are slow at being able to put together funding at short notice. But that doesn't mean it won't end up going to an institution. Most of the museums in the United States have been founded by private collections that have been donated by individuals," he said.
