  1. One of the biggest shortcomings I found with trying to do superheroes with Mid Journey was that it wanted to straight up swipe Batman or Superman instead of come up with something more original. Some other models are better about not associating superhero with only those two characters, but most of the them I've tried will churn out bat ears or S shields with regularity.

What AI did you use to generate the above?

What's the coast got to do with it? He's an actor. Actors play characters from different backgrounds than themselves. As that range goes, this diff is pretty small.

What's a sense of humor got to do with it? 😁

If you've been to both coasts in the US, there's a stark cultural difference. That was a joke playing on that difference.

This casting could work, but I'm not expecting much. Heck, you can put perfectly fine actors in the roles and give them garbage to work with, and have a movie be garbage. The franchise does seem Doomed, though.

One interesting bit is having the thing start in the 60s, so maybe they'll play up the SF adventurer/explorer aspects of the team, which would be a cool approach. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'll wait for the word of mouth on the movie before I see it, and then pass judgment.

I don't pay much attention to word of mouth. I speculate, ponder, get hyped, or worry . . . but I just watch stuff and see if I like it. I tend not to watch anything on the big screen these days since it's all going on streaming pretty fast post-pandemic, so even the theater/wait choice is kind of null these days.

The AIs just can't quite wrap their heads around those goat legs lol

This is one important part of my point. The sheer quantity of A.I work will out-compete new up and coming real artists.

One artist mentioned that AI could easily replace lower level/entry level concept artists, when you just need to generate a bunch of concepts quick. So, that's also a real impact.

However, it won't replace the experienced artist. It'll just stifle newer artists so they can't get to be experienced artists, then we'll eventually have all soulless AI art as the older generation of experienced artists die off.

That, or artists will find a way to use AI to their advantage and adapt.

We'll find out eventually which is the case.

As much as I like Robbie and tolerate Driver, the casting seems to be pretty horrible. I'll wait for this one to hit Disney Plus.

Sadly, they wasted WJH in Quantumania.

They could easily re-cast him, totally different look and behaviors with Reed.

Another bad note is that the AI dont let you create sexy pictures

www.dezgo.com has several models, not as restricted as other AI models in that regard. The output seems to be PG-rated.

I feel compelled to point out that changing the Constitution is not unconstitutional. It's a feature. The guy wants to enact an amendment to modify a prior amendment. Doesn't seem well considered, TBH. He probably read Starship Troopers and thought "neat idea!"

  8. I just found this video this morning. It's a very detailed breakdown of the Uvalde police response by a tactical instructor. I'm putting it in spoiler tags for language. It's also very long, at 1:43. There are many F bombs, b/c the speaker is upset, but it's worth watching to gain a greater understanding both of the botched response and what a proper response looks like and why. At the end, he expresses some political opinions pretty strongly. You can stop watching when he pauses at about 1:35 after finishing reading the report if you don't want to hear a rant about defunding the police, BLM, ANTIFA and gun control, as that's not the meat of this anyway:

    Spoiler

  9. A few I could dredge up (because of Google bias):

    • The Tennessee shooting may qualify, but not all of the facts are in. I doubt the timing was coincidental, but to be fair, we don't know for sure if it was politically motivated.
    • There was the 2017 shooting at the Congressional baseball game.
    • There was the 2013 shooting at the Family Research Council headquarters, which was stopped by a security officer. The intent was to kill as many people there as possible.

I recall hearing about at least one other that wasn't one of these, some years ago. So, our extremists on both sides are capable of atrocities. However, recently, it seems like a larger portion of these events are motivated by people radicalized by right wing hate groups.

I found this paper by a professor at SUNY Oswego (PDF download link):

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwib-tWG3uT-AhUIJjQIHbX_DEkQFnoECAoQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fccjls.scholasticahq.com%2Farticle%2F26973-far-left-versus-far-right-fatal-violence-an-empirical-assessment-of-the-prevalence-of-ideologically-motivated-homicides-in-the-united-states%2Fattachment%2F67191.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1ake0xQ7qfSViQIB_ohTkM

The short version: Left wing ideologues also murder people, but typically right wing puts out bigger numbers. Except 2017 for some reason.

Found this fascinating (not in a particularly good way) data visualization from The Violence Project. It doesn't answer your question, but shows some other interesting things:

given the alarming frequency at which police arrive at the wrong address and shoot to kill, I would be hesitant to summon them to anywhere nearby.

And how often is that? I mean, if you took the ratio of the number of wrongful killings by police responding to the wrong address vs. total calls, what do you suppose that number to be?

We'll leave one of my biggest pet peeves with modern policing -- no-knock warrants -- because we're talking about calling police about noisy neighbors ore neighbors shooting guns in their yards, so a different circumstance.

My own personal impression is that there's a pretty low risk of anything bad happening. Mostly, the police come out, ID the person, then tell them to be quiet. Or in the case of the guy shooting the gun, could end differently. Better the police handle it than a family get massacred, though.

Thanks to Clonus, we know why the victims felt they couldn't call the police. That's another huge issue that needs to be addressed.

It's VERY common to have others say "go talk to them first."  They call that being a good neighbor, and calling the cops is being a bad guy.

Doesn't matter. Be a bad guy, who cares what some person on a website says? Is the person telling you to "talk to them first" going to pay your medical bills or funeral expenses and take care of your family if you get hurt if you get attacked? I doubt it. The police aren't going to tell the person who called. Let the cops talk to them. They have authority and the trappings of authority. The person is less likely to attack them than they are you. The police are also better equipped to deal with someone that is stupid enough to attack them.

Also, why are you expected to be a good neighbor to someone who isn't being a good neighbor to you?

Certainly not. I hope they catch the guy and bring him to justice.

    Quote from that article:

"It is the latest in a string of shootings resulting from seemingly normal and even mundane interactions."

I'd say drunken neighbor shooting a firearm in his yard in the middle of the night falls out of the scope of "seemingly normal and even mundane interactions."

This is exactly what police are for. Even if it's just loud music. Someone's  acting out, have people in uniform come out and settle them down. Be safe.
