  1. So now we get toasted peanuts Of course that joke assumes whoever was living there is alive and insured and all that.
  2. India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down a part of the country’s legal code that had permitted men to have sex with their underage wives — a decision that human rights groups said was an important step forward for the rights of girls. This made for an awkward laugh in our house, as my sister-in-law was married at 17. Barely 17. In her husbands defense, she had graduated high school early and he met up with her in college. He didn't know she was that young until he asked why her mom had to sign the form too. They've been together 20+ years, so it ended okay.
  3. When they originally made it a felony, giving someone HIV was condemning them to death. Now it's condemning them to lifetime inconvenience, medical bills, and maybe a few years off the end. Maybe. That's bad, but it isn't murder, and that's why it's still illegal, but not a felony.
  4. Played the game. It was a lot of fun, and some of the puzzles were clever. But man, Hawkins has an awful lot of owls. Hyper aggressive owls.
  5. Failure to tell sex partners about HIV positive status will no longer be a felony in California. (Still a misdemeanor) http://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/hiv-california-law/
  6. Look, its always easiest to start in Madagascar or Iceland instead of somewhere else and just hoping to get in before they close their ports.
  7. Did I just I just wake up in an alternate reality? NRA says bump stocks, devices used by Las Vegas shooter, should be regulated
  8. wouldn't have helped this time around. No criminal record, no sign of madness (before the murder spree)
  9. To be fair, the truck attack in Nice killed 86. So just poofing away all the guns wouldn't necessarily stop this.
  10. The thing is, the usual proposals to reduce shootings wouldn't have done anything for this case. Have more people with Carrry and Conceal permits? He was shooting from a high hotel room. A few pistols on the ground would have done nothing. More profiling? He was a white senior citizen with no criminal record. I'm unaware of any profile he fit. Weapons restrictions? He had 10 guns, enough to not need to reload. He wasn't using any full automatics or anything. I know lots of people with way more than that.
  11. The one thing that makes me uneasy, is if NK sold one of their nukes to a terror group, or even a government that couldn't secure them well enough. These sanctions are making it harder to make ends meet in a responsible way . . .
  12. Food Truck Kicked Out of Town for Serving Hurricane Victims Without a Permit
  13. And now we know why Mr. Burns blotted out the sun. Prime adspace!
  14. That attack only happens if the US provokes it. I know NK looks wacky, but if you filter it through a mindset of "our existence has always been threatened by the USA", they are very rational. They don't have enough nukes to neutralize the US as an enemy. They certainly don't have enough to neutralize the US and its allies, some of whom are right next to NK, and have US forces stationed there. But even a few nukes, with enough of a strike range, can deter the US. MAD works.
  15. He'll get the bomb, but he might be less likely to use it. For that matter, he has the bomb already, so its a moot point. I just don't feel like "the same thing we've done for 60 years, only harder" is an informed decision at this point.
  16. Yes. NK has ever lived in fear of being overthrown. Thats the whole reason they have their nuke program. Recognizing them would be such a small gesture, but I think it would help.
  17. Would it really be so bad to finally formally recognize North Korea as a sovereign, legitimate country?
  18. Have you read Solnit's "A Paradise built in Hell"? One chapter was about Hurricane Katrina. Relatively few of the looters actually killed anyone. She did find evidence of People passing through white neighborhoods being shot on mere suspicion of being looters. Shot while still in the street, because CNN ran the most sensationalist stories of Mad Max violence happening among the poor left in the city. When refugees tried walking through rich suburbs to get to safety, they were presumed a threat.
  19. Yep, the Mexico quake clinches it. Time to recap the past month or so I see a bad moon a-rising I see trouble on the way I see earthquakes and lightnin' I see bad times today Don't go 'round tonight It's bound to take your life There's a bad moon on the rise I hear hurricanes a-blowing I know the end is coming soon I fear rivers over flowing I hear the voice of rage and ruin Don't go 'round tonight It's bound to take your life There's a bad moon on the rise I hope you got your things together I hope you are quite prepared to die Look's like we're in for nasty weather One eye is taken for an eye Oh don't go 'round tonight It's bound to take your life There's a bad moon on the rise There's a bad moon on the rise
  20. It really depends on the right wing media in question. I can't speak to Fox or Breitbart or whatever, but National Review and American Conservative frequently oppose him, and generally serve as lukewarm apologists for Trump at most.
  21. Well, I couldn't get the attached images to display. Odd. Maybe someone could point me to a FAQ about that? Anyway, I stuck them on my flickr so I could share. Lets try this
  22. So, I had a little positive feedback for my pet theory that divided governments are more likely to yield smaller deficits and smaller government than united Republican or Democratic governments. I thought I'd try putting it into graphs and and article, and maybe shop it to a few political magazines? I know some of them take submissions. I wondered if maybe you guys could review my graphs and tell me, harsh truth, if they need something more? Recap: I think that it is more 'fair' to look at the rate of change per year for deficits. The federal government is a big, cumbersome thing, and it can't change outlays or taxation quickly. If there is a big deficit one year, it is likely the next year will have a deficit too. But, we can look at the rate of change of the deficit; how fast the deficit grows or shrinks in a year is a fair judge of that years government. So I was going to start with a chart of the deficit over the last two administrations, and a second one that showed it being translated into rate-of-change (derivative with respect to time for the calculus inclined. I originally called it that, but the style guide said to avoid scientific terms) Deficit Over Two Presidencies.bmpChange in Deficit Over Two Presidencies.bmp That section showed united Republican, united Democratic, and divided governments. It showed that the united governments were more likely to grow the deficit and divided governments were more likely to reduce it. It also showed exceptions to that trend. Next I was going to drive the point home with graphs that showed how the median rates of change lined up. Key.bmp Deficit_Constant.bmp Deficit_GDP.bmp Outlays_Constant.bmp Outlays_GDP.bmp Receipts_Constant.bmp Receipts_GDP.bmp I'm also putting together a graph for Federal employees (fewer government employees means smaller government) and maybe, if I can figure it out, Words in the Federal Code (longer federal code means smaller government) First, though, I wanted to get your take on whether the graphs were at all understandable? I know showing the 20,40,60, and 80th percentiles is unconventional. 25th and 75th is more the norm. But I like these and think they show the shape of the data. But I shouldn't shoot my article in the foot over my silly affectations if it just doesn't work. Thoughts?
  23. Isn't "meeting with victims" just camera mugging for politicians? Get a good photo without helping much. Meh. I'll save my outrage a little longer.
  24. Cop reassures woman "we only shoot black people" https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/8/31/16232880/georgia-police-cobb-county-video On the one hand I get that the cop was trying to reassure her, saying anything to get her to comply so he wouldn't have to arrest her, and that he doesn't necessarily think it is more okay to shoot black people. (I kind of wish the woman had brought up that Australian woman in Minnesota) Still, awful thing to say.
  25. Masked anarchists violently rout right-wing demonstrators in Berkeley This is wholly unacceptable.
