  1. Re: [Xenozoic Tales / Cadillacs and Dinosaurs] Lost technology idea needed.

One of my favorite settings etc etc etc ....... Pure Pulp, heh....

Anyway, if you want some good Lost Tech to recover... wow that's a list. I'm gonna go out on a limb right now and say one of the best things you could recover in that setting, would be a functional 5 axis flow jet with plenty of garnet, power to run it, and/or a good Rapid Prototype machine as well.....

On the other hand, a small scale Iron Mine and Smelter would come in pretty handy as well, and the same could be said for an Arc Furnace....

  2. Re: Interview with Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts on io9

...Right; Star Trek and Star Wars are horrible franchises and should never have been started.[/deadpan]

Heh, that made me laugh. Honestly I tend to point at Star Wars and go, Awesome Fantasy. Star Trek, well I'm one of those TOS fans with about Half of the Next Generation tossed in as likeable. Despised DS9 and Voyager, Liked Enterprise until they started churning out generic rehash episodes.... *shrug*

I guess my preferred visual SF elements are Harder SF. Loved Babylon 5. Loved Batllestar Galactica (old series and new) with the exception of a couple of episodes. The More Science in it, even if it's just Rubber Science the more I like it. The More things that look like Machines, the more "functionality" the more I like it.

Doesn't mean I don't get a kick out of some great Space Opera or the like, I just like my SF more Defined, and that means creating and sticking to the Outline and placing limits on certain things.

Still though, common sense dictates that you will get a Better CyberPunk story let's say, if you stick to an outline roughly equal to Blade Runner or the Novel NeuroMancer, and not go running off into the cornfield with comic book style nano whatzits and or incorporating fantasy elements such as Magic and what not. I guess I like my Ice-cream to remain separate distinct flavors and not just random spaz on paper or screen.

  4. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

You likely would never need to fire it--your adversary would see you taking aim and say, "I ain't gettin' shot with that! I give up! Please--I give up!"

    It could happen. ;)

Heh, I've gotten that open carrying a few of the weapons I have left. Especially from my deputy sheriff neighbor across the parking lot.......

I've always thought, that the more Control you have over what you are trying to write, the better it will turn out. It's easier to write something on a piece of paper with nice lines and margins then to write the same thing on a blank slate with a piece of chalk.

So much like the Interview goes, have to agree strongly.

  6. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

If you've access to reloading equipment, sub-powered loads are probably your best bet.

Your next best bet is probably 'barking' the target. The idea is to shoot just close enough that the impact of the round stuns the target (usually a squirrel) and it falls to the ground where the shooter finishes it off. Whether or not this is really possible is subject to debate, however, anything the GM lets you get away with is legal.

If All I have it the Full Sized Any Rifle and I'm looking to eat a squirrel. I'm gonna kill it with a Rock. Doesn't take much.

  7. Re: Second Best Game System ?

Hate or Love FASERIP, one thing it did do correctly was get the scale of the Characters In Line and correct vs their respective comics and comic feats. The MWP book doesn't even come close since Cortex doesn't scale well with anything really. You only Have so many Dice. Marvels own swing at the game got it Right as well, but they really didn't market or push it at all so it went the way of the dodo quickly. Again, it's very pretty, but it's also really Lazy. Got the same issues with the DC product from Green Ronin. Pretty, but Lazy, and Incorrect and off scale for many characters (Though a much improved System advance for them on the other hand). In a sense, "Hey, let's just convert this old game material from these guys over here and be done with it....."

Hell, the MWP Marvel book goes so far as to tell you that things won't Match depending on source material (Like say, the comics themselves).... That kind of stuff annoys me. One thing you could count on for FASERIP was how close it scaled to the books. Out of all that material really the only mistake I felt was just glaring was rating Nick Fury's Fighting way to low....

I can make exceptions for a systems Innate limitations. What I have issues with is, is when things are just wrong and the answer in the books is a *shrug*.....

  8. Re: Second Best Game System ?

Dug out all my Cortex stuff so I could give it a good comparison, as well as a running side by side with the rest of my Super Hero Stuff. Just not happy with it considering what it could have been even within the limits of the Cortex System. That's before getting into the stuff that's just Wrong on the handful of sheets that are provided for the game. *sigh* Ah well. One of these days Marvel will wake up and get it right again.

  9. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

Most Guns bought "legally" are Expensive. The 5/7 runs about a grand, plus or minus a hundred here and there. The Ammo isn't cheap but it's not check book breaking like a few others I got sitting around.

If you know where to go illegally though, that's a completely different animal.

  10. Re: Second Best Game System ?

Page 110. It's short' date=' and very narrative-leaning, so may not appeal to Herophiles. But it's there. Reminds me a bit of character modeling method in FASERIP.[/quote']

Doesn't even come close to FASERIP, though if you had to character model FASERIP was an insanely easy system to do it with. The stuff from 110 forward is just the basics that can be summed up as Pick a Die, put it here. Even compared to the core rules for the system that's uber bland. Sure it's the Basic system and an introductory book, but you got Far Far Far more out of the Previous Marvel RPG that Marvel did themselves, with way less pages.

I didn't hate it. I've got every super hero RPG ever published. But It could have been a crowd silencing Home Run and they went for a Bunt.

  11. Re: 400 pounds per square inch = ???

I don't think you can go from this to STR: it's a function of how much area you have, so two entities with very different STR scores could both apply 400 lbs per square inch, depending on area. An eagle can exert about 400 psi, which is far more than a human hand ... but humans are still stronger.

Instead work from effect: if you have a giant snake, what do you want it to be able to squeeze to death? :) For example, 48 STR would turn your average human (or for that matter, a buffalo) to pulp in very short order, but isn't going to kill your average brick (might make him a bit short of breath until he peels it off, though).

    cheers, Mark

Building from Effect should be a T-Shirt for this game, heh.
