Philosophy is incredibly important - it illuminates the "why" of life, and simply as formalized logical thinking it stimulates the intellect in a way which has bearing on all activities. It should be taught from early grade school on. Our failure to embrace it in early education is just plain wrong and bad - it would enable learning faster later in school and pay off in a better-adjusted citizenry. It's much more important than this absurd notion we should be taking our time to teach children about feeling good about themselves.

I'm often surprised and interested by what generates people giving rep. Some of it is just timing (not being able to rep when desired and repping when the next "worthwhile" thing is said) but often there are individual items which resonate more than expected or, often, what I may think is something really interesting and worthwhile gets zero attention while another thing which I may post without thinking much about gets repped a few times.

I've never studied it, but I'm sure it'd be easy to be a "rep whore" in the on-topic fora, though it would take some study over a few months to really get the hang of which things generate the more rep-heavy posters' interests. Whereas there isn't much subtlety or thought required to be an NGD rep whore, as RFK demonstrated amply.

    Bart's tall tale #2:

"Well, you know, this here travelin' to these parts brings back memories. Lessee, now, it was just about 2 years ago I was travelling through this here Sioux country, though a lot closer to the Missouri, quite a ways from here obviously. I had hooked up with a hellfire-n-brimstone preacher, a man by the name of Reverend Dwight Earl Thomason, who had quite an inspirin' show. He had asked me to organize the men who fixed up the wagons, got the vittles, all that, since they were, well, I hate to say it, but in his own words, "A low breed of man unredeemed by the Lord as of yet despite my best efforts."

"So as part of my duties I helped them on the hunt. Now a stray set of buffalo had made their way pretty far south and all our hopes were high that we'd be eatin' high on the buffalo, as it were. No sooner had I directed the men as to the best approach, managin' things from behind a bluff, then a whole flock o' Sioux came ridin' down as well as sneakin' around us. I did my best but the men were tired and next thing we knew, we'd been captured by them.

"They were going to scalp us but then one spotted the big sack I had by my side - gold coin payroll, I was holdin' on to it with the promise of disbursement upon a satisfactory night's meal, as per the padre. Since one of the braves had carelessly tied it up along with me to a pole, they had to half-untie me just to git at it. During that time, I made a few war whoops that frightened, somethin' I'd learned from Cherokee Joe down in New Orleans, and they paused. I took that moment to untangle myself further and, to their surprize, I dropped down to my knees and started drawin' on the ground. I was surprized, to, that I was fast enough that they hadn't plain cut me up before I could do that.

"Anyhow, I started showin' 'em the sun and the stars on a primitive astrological map on the ground. That was really just for stallin' purposes, but it got their interest. Then I drew Indian-like fellas under the sun, then, way down like from hades, the white men like us. They laughed and got a big kick out of it, nodded a whole lot. Then I pulled out the gold coins and said in English, "I'm sure someone understands me - you can have these if you give me my freedom, for I am a simple dishonorable white devil, I admit it. Just let me go, you can have these other fellas." Well that got my partners right upset but they didn't know I had a plan. You see, I saw one of the Sioux was a real young guy and had a shiny new rifle while the old boss was a more traditional sort - well you'll see...

"so one of the Injun Sioux walks up and grabs it and says in English, "Thank you, devil, but I kill you anyway." as he snatched the money. But as I expected the older chief suddenly got mad at this young buck and threw the money down. After all, these superstitious lot just figured that it ain't so good takin' the white devils evil temptations. But this young one had all his reasons, while the old chief argued the old ways. Next thing you know, they get into a big ruckus, with everyone takin' sides. I didn't know much Sioux but I'd repeat a word in someone's ear or point at someone who clearly said somethin' offensive in mock horror, and next thing you know, them Sioux are all fightin' each other!

"So I untied my partners real sneaky-like, then we surprized the last few braves standing. Got the money back and as I had started to suspect, some extra coins from the young brave who'd embraced the new ways. So the moral of the story is, it ain't so hard to take advantage of the Sioux and they ain't quite so smart as you'd think. I'm sure if we run across 'em we could lick 'em easy, either by words or by guns or both. Well, y'all have a good evenin's sleep, I know I could stand a few nods..."

Bart's Tall Tales #3 (last one)

When the first breathing space comes up after the defeat of Ramon MartiÞnez and the procurement of the watch, Bart regails everyone with yet another tale (but this one takes a few different twists from his familiar tone). (NB - unfamiliar readers should be forewarned that the occasionally-unusual tone in this compared to the other two is supposed to be symptomatic of insanity creeping into Bart as a result of holding the watch mentioned prior in this paragraph)

"Yup, this reminds me of many years ago when I was working a, ahem, business with a man out near Houston. We had a rather profitable business selling people real estate back east, as he had come across several deeds to good development property. We had many satisfied customers and so many people had bought property we figured it was time to move along and give another town the great opportunity of land for little money down. By the way, if y'all need any property I do still have a few acres in a little beauty of an area of the Catskills up in New York State

"Anyhow, my acquaintance whom I'll simply call Jared Smith for the purposes of this exposition, wired on ahead to Albuquerque and got us, he said, room and board. Well, sometimes I like to help people out without making a big fuss over it and in the course of helping him out by packing for him while he slept I found he'd actually wired some two hundred dollars on to some town called Boulder.

"Well [suddenly becoming rather animated] I don't know why I didn't slit his throat while he slept and laughed as his blood ran out, that little snake - I hope I see him in hell - [calming only a bit] - and, ah, anyway, to get back to the point here, I realized I was quite short of cash now since he'd had the lion's share of it - I'm a trusting man, y'know. So I borrowed his things, including his pearl-handled guns, and Mrs. Gray you'll be proud to know I donated it to the local church as he slept - I must admit by the way his sleep was sound due to the villainy of alcohol, something I only indulge in medicinally.

"I suppose the Lord has a way of returning things ten-fold, as they say, and after a visit to a nice old wealthy lady, I was fortunate enough that she loaned me some several hundred dollars - long story - and I used the money to, after making a small donation to the parish, take off to this Boulder town. I paid a few good citizens, who understood how at the mercy of this sinner I was, to say I'd gone on to Albuquerque without him. Meanwhile I also paid an out-of-work engraver who had a family of 12 to feed to forge me some documents saying I was Jared. That way when I got to Boulder, well ahead of Jered whom I trust first tried to angrily find me on the road to Albuquerque, I could claim the two hundred plus dollars. So I made out with a small profit after it was all said and done, and {taking off his hat}, so did the Lord's flock. Well, what could I do? I admit, I shouldn't have been around such a shady character. Anyway, defeating this here Ramon sinner reminds me a bit of that incident and how sometimes you gotta break omelets to make eggs.

"'Course [suddenly turning red and shaking] I sure hope I meet Jared and really teach him about justice by ramming my gun down his throat and blowin' out his innards. Damn sinner, makes me sick how a man could let you down. El Puerqo, how'd you like to take target practice on that sorry loser!? It'd be funny, eh, blastin' away at him! HAHAHHAhahahaha ha ..... ha? 'Scuse me, I must have a headache from the sun and all this killin' today, not quite myself."
