Re: Starbase Floorplans

I've never actually bothered with starbase plans. Most starbases are big enough to count as a city, and I don't make more than a rudimentary map of cities either. Since a starbase doesn't have rivers running through it, or an organic growth pattern, ie since a starbase is artificial, there's generally not much need for even that much map.

I just assume that part of the starbase is intended for admin functions, part of it is repair bays, and part of it is commercial (with shuttle services, freight companies, passenger liners to other stars, restaurants, lodging, etc). Generic offices work for most of these, whenever it becomes tactically necessary to have a map. For large scale movement ("I want to go find a tavern...I mean, a space-bar") I just assume some amount of time passes in the search and put the character there, just like I would in a city.

I'd have to disagree. At least with the starbase size statement. I took the context to mean Starbases in general, everything from the small outpost or station to the mentioned city sized stations. In the case of citysized I've done the same thing before also. But it really only works if the PC's are transients. If the PC's are actually assigned to the station or base in question, detailed deck plans become critical.

With deck plans: PC#1 "We've got hull breaches in zones 1, 5, and 6, decks 14 and 15. DCC has confirmed boarding parties have consolidated their positions here, zone 5 deck 15."

PC#2 "Damn, unless we can stop them before they reach this junction they will be able to attack computer control central from a dozen different routes."

PC#1 "Well then we stop them, here is what I think we can do.......

Without deck plans: GM: " the enemy has breached the hull and successfully dropped boarding parties."

PC#`1: "What are they doing?"

GM: "It looks like they are moving inward and trying to take control of several junctions."

PC#2: "We send troopers to stop them"

GM: "OK, roll to see if you......."

Without a map of "the lay of the land (or station)" the PC's really can't make any informed decisions and it becomes a GM fiat or roll-playing (as opposed to role-playing).

Now if the PC's are just passing through and are not attached to the station in anyway, then a lack of deck plans is actually better. None of the players would know their way around in the first place and detailed plans would be confidential information that is protected from casual view.

Just my opinion,

Spence
