ZYKLON-B

Abdiel Wohlgeruch

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Note: Zyklon-B is from an alternate Earth Dimension.

During one of his many adventures, Dr Saul Numen and his family, the New Men, came across an alternate Earth where the world had been devastated after the Germans won the Second World War. During this excursion the New Men found their counterparts and managed to usurp the Nazi leadership, but not before the Nazi-version of Saul Numen set in sequence a Doomsday device which destroyed not only the planet but seemingly the entire alternate reality.

Saul and his family escaped and the eminent doctor worried about the fate of the alternate world he was unable to help. He talked with an associate of his, Dr Gísladóttir, who was also the villain known as Arctic Fox. She used her knowledge of dimensions to search for any sign of the lost reality and in doing so inadvertently brought into our reality the sole survivor: a young Jewish doctor who had been experimented upon by the Nazi regime and had been transformed into a mutated uberhuman with the ability to exude noxious gasses.

Zyklon-B was disoriented when he first arrived in our dimension (Uberworld Reality) and Dr Gísladóttir kept him isolated while Saul Numen and other scientists investigated him. They all agreed that he was a threat to society and were unable to stem the flow of gasses which seemed to be generated within his body. Saul located his counterpart in our reality but the counterpart had no uberhuman abilities. Although he was reluctant, Saul agreed to bring the two together as directed by Dr Gísladóttir.

The trauma of seeing his counterpart and knowing that his reality was erased drove Zyklon-B insane. His counterpart was also driven to the brink and fought against Saul and Dr Gísladóttir, succeeding in disabling the containment room and freeing Zyklon-B. The enraged Zyklon-B nearly killed Saul but was shunted through a dimensional portal by Dr Gísladóttir.

The two doctors parted company after that, and soon after Dr Gísladóttir inadvertently revealed that she was Arctic Fox.

Zyklon-B disappeared, but he couldn't seem to escape Saul Numen. Every dimension he arrived in had a Saul Numen and Zyklon-B seemed destined to clash with him before being shunted to another reality. The constant shunting has driven Zyklon-B further insane while also bolstering his opinion that he is perhaps the most powerful being in creation - obviously the centre of the universe since all other realities seem to be orbiting him. He has become the only constant.

Zyklon-B has found his way into numerous dimensions and alternate realities, and has appeared in the Uberworld Reality two times. The first time after his initial exile saw him battle the New Men in Israel alongside the heroes of Cabbala. The second time he arrived at the behest of a deranged priest in Berlin and spent several months in the employ of a cult before being sent back into the dimensional melting pot by the Brotherhood and Saul Numen.

During Saul's own disappearance into the time stream, he and Zyklon-B met up in a far-flung alternate future where they were forced to team up for a time against an unknown alien race which had seemingly enslaved Earth. The two were unable to consolidate this truce after their successful revolution as Saul was wrenched through the timeline again.

Zyklon-B has not been seen since.

Personality

Abdiel Wohlgeruch was once a timid Jewish doctor on an alternate Earth. He was captured by Saul Numen who was working for the Nazi regime and after a series of experiments and some genetic engineering, Wohlgeruch became Zyklon-B: a tortured man cursed to be a living manufacturer of poison gas.

When his reality was destroyed he was the sole survivor, a fact that drove him insane. He has since become even more unstable believing that Saul Numen is an aberration which must be destroyed in all his incarnations, and that Zyklon-B is like some kind of universal lynch-pin, holding everything together. There is seemingly no way to convince him of any different interpretation of events and as long as those around him treat him as some kind of harbinger or messiah he is quite content to let people live. If anyone gets in his way or contradicts his beliefs, though, he will waste no time in destroying them.

Quote

"You cannot hide from me forever, Doctor Numen... and I do not care how fast you can recover from the dead. I will always be here... waiting for you and your family."

Powers

Zyklon-B has been engineered in an insidious and mostly unrevealed way. His body generates toxic gasses, similar to Zyklon-B and cyanide poisons, and he releases these constantly through his pores. He has shown an ability to manipulate this gas, and other gasses, to perform a variety of feats including flight, the generation of focused gas bolts and the ability to suffocate people simply by concentrating on restricting the flow of oxygen.

He also possesses uberhuman strength and durability, the result of experimentation and the production of such dangerous toxins in his body.

As a kind of temporal and dimensional anomaly, Zyklon-B has the ability to shunt himself between dimensions and times although he has absolutely no control over this ability apart from the uncanny ability to arrive in areas which are close to that dimension's counterpart of Saul Numen. This shunting ability is generally triggered when Zyklon-B encounters other time travellers or extra-dimensional beings, but can also be a result of stress or simply the conclusion of a act or mission. The exact nature of this ability is unknown although Arctic Fox has done some research into it.

Appearance

Zyklon-B is a product of insidious experiments. His body is toxic but has adapted to its new condition, altering his skin to a greenish colour and his hair to a deep blue-purple. The pores in his skin are constantly emitting toxic fumes and these can sometimes form into a mist around his body. He has always worn the same costume which is a dark purple bodysuit with white belt, and bands of white around his neck, wrists, thighs and lower legs. His hair is always unkempt and he looks like he needs a week of sleep.

Notes

Confusing write-up, I know. Basic premise is that Zyklon is a Jewish man transformed by Nazi science into a villain who was then somehow spared when his entire universe and reality was destroyed. He now bounces through time and alternate realities as he has no home. He blames Saul Numen for his current problems and is something of a recurring thorn in the side of the New Men.

ASTRO

Federico Maglietta

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Florence has long been a living museum for the artworks of the Italian Renaissance, from Michelangelo's David to the treasures of the Uffizi Gallery. When young Federico Maglietta was assigned to the city he thought he was going to be inundated with tourist drama and the endless bureaucratic nonsense of warring museums and historians. Instead he found himself immediately thrust into a tense hostage drama in the Piazza della Signoria when a squad of the Red Brigade made a grab for a crowd of Canadian tourists which happened to include the wife of the Canadian Ambassador to Italy. The tense stand-off was eventually negotiated with the help of the Italian superhero Solar Centurion.

Maglietta was inspired by the young hero but soon found himself assigned to clean-up duty around the Piazza while the main attraction and celebration moved on. Duty his solitary duty he came across a section of the piazza which had been torn up, presumably by the Red Brigade. No one else had noticed the damage and Maglietta investigated. What seemed like a small crater revealed itself to be an access point to an underground passage which slipped under the Arno and deeper into the city. Maglietta had grown bored with his duty and followed the passage which had been seemingly undisturbed for centuries. Whilst underground he was secretly assessed by an alien probe which had lain dormant since the passage's construction sometime in the 1600s. When he arrived at a certain point the alien probe revealed itself and informed the young Polizia officer that he was now the host of the Astrum Force.

Bands of gold formed on his wrists from thin streams of liquid gold which shot out from both sides of the passage, and within seconds Maglietta could feel a strange energy course through his body. He pulled at the wristbands but they would not come off, and a voice inside his mind informed him of his new power. The Astrum Force was the collected psyches of a long lost race of space-faring beings which had been without a host for centuries even before coming to Earth. Possibly because of the long dormancy or perhaps because of Maglietta's unique brainwaves, the collected psyches were unable to fully regain sentience.

Presumably the Astrum Force intended to use Maglietta's body as a host, but because the psyches were so degraded Maglietta has access to their immense powers without having to submit himself to their will.

He left the hidden passage and sealed off its entrance point using the newly charged bands. No one has since entered the site, although Maglietta has returned on several occasions to ensure that the entrance is still sealed. He returned to his life as a member of the Polizia and quickly rose through the ranks with his new found confidence and his tenacity for hard work. While he succeeded quicker than he should have expected, he also gained the ire of his fellow officers. One such officer is his partner, Monica Cucinotta, who secretly hates him and wants to get a new partner. Maglietta, on the other hands, secretly adores her and goes to great lengths to gain her approval. To make matters more complicated, Monica Cucinotta has fallen in love with Astro: Maglietta's hero identity, although Maglietta doesn't realise her feelings for Astro do not extend to him as Federico Maglietta.

Astro spends most of his superhero time patrolling Florence and regularly assists the emergency services in and around the city. He has had little to do with other superheroes although he does plan to approach the Dawnstars or Solar Centurion one day - he just doesn't feel that he is ready for that level of intensity. Even though his first impression of Florence was close to the mark, in that there is little uberhuman crime, he does find plenty of crises to avert and damsels to rescue.

Personality

Maglietta is a career-oriented police officer who is striving to climb the professional ladder as quickly as he can, mostly to impress his parents back home in Bari, and to win the heart of Monica Cucinotta, whose father was a Commissario. He has nearly limitless confidence and his possession of the Astrum Force has given him the self-assurance to go after anything he wants - although he still finds it difficult to approach Monica directly.

As Astro, he is the dashing and daring super hero who always has time for the public and never puts a wrong foot forward. He has exchanged a handful of kisses with the object of his affection, Monica, but only as Astro. The media have caught one such embrace and Monica is widely known as being the girlfriend of Florence's only hero, something which tends to get her into trouble more often than not (and as long as it brings her into contact with her hero, Monica is not complaining).

Quote

"Put that statue down, carefully. This is not a super-market. And we do not allow withdrawals from the Uffizi Gallery."

Powers

Astro has been joined with the enigmatic Astrum Force which was once a repository for the psyches of a long-dead alien race. Upon joining with Maglietta, the psyches seem to have dissipated leaving Maglietta with unfettered access to the vast powers of the Astrum Force.

The bands are always attached to his wrists but they are made of a very amorphous material and can appear as thick golden bands in his Astro identity or thin bracelets in his civilian one. The bands can only be removed by depressing two diamond shapes. This has only happened once in his superhero career although the man who stole them was unable to use the bands and Astro soon had them returned to his wrists.

Some of the uses of the energy include projecting energy blasts, bands of energy which can bind opponents, intense blinding light, the ability to fly (even faster than the speed of light when out of the Earth's atmosphere) and a protective force field which provides protection from injury and harsh conditions. The wrist bands also grant the wearer enhanced strength (even if the wearer is not Maglietta) and reinforces his will power.

Appearance

Federico Maglietta is a handsome man in his mid-twenties who appears very well put together, if not entirely at ease with himself. He always wears immaculate suits or his Polizia uniform, but often looks uncomfortable or perhaps a little young. This unease is the result of trying too hard to conform with what he believes is a successful man - probably because his father always wore suits to every occasion. His hair is cut every two weeks and he spends a lot of time on his appearance, something else which annoys his partner, Monica Cucinotta.

As Astro he appears as a strong, reliable superhero, outfitted in black pants and boots with a golden star belt buckle and prominent gold wrist bands. He appears bare-chested to best show off his enhanced physique, but conceals his identity with a black mask.

#85 LOVE (Jamaica)

LOVE

Lovena Saunders

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Lovena Saunders has spent most of her life associated with CLAW, beginning as a corporate spy during the 1980s under Steel Claw, and then as a personal trainer for agents working in the Caribbean. She ended up working in deployment and showed such talent for matching forces to assignments that when she applied to head up a CLAW franchise, those in power agreed to it almost immediately. Black Tower Security was established in Kingston, Jamaica but Lovena spent most of her time in North America and Europe, facilitating mercenary contracts and even becoming involved in some of the more sensitive assignments. Her connections with CLAW were exposed by the Sentinels during a widespread investigation into various Aeries in the United States, and her reputation was tarnished forcing her underground. Black Tower Security folded.

A couple of years later, Lovena returned as the CEO of Intrepid Security, which had risen from the ashes of Black Tower Security (utilising most of their assets, personnel and facilities). Although her connections to CLAW had been publicly exposed the public seemed to have a very short memory. No charges were laid and Lovena was able to operate easily across most countries. Her mercenaries and security forces were in high demand in Afghanistan and Iraq, and she even entered into a short contract with the United States Army (although Sanction quickly intervened and the contract was revoked). Intrepid Security has been in conflict with the Zodiac Agency many times, some of which have flared into major public conflagrations. Lovena has developed a personal hatred for Zodiac, most likely because she holds them responsible for the revelations about Black Tower and CLAW.

Intrepid Security has several offices across the world including Kingston, Jamaica; London, United Kingdom and Sydney, Australia.

In recent years she allegedly teamed up with the vigilante-cum-terrorist Hate to steal the contents of a safe in a private suite of the Petronas Twin Towers of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The two leading mercenaries have been seen together frequently and rumours abound that they are about to join forces, bringing the resources and reputation of Intrepid Security together with the shadowy revolutionary soldiers of the Underground.

Personality

Lovena suffers no fools, and projects a fierce, elite aura which often unsettles those who have dealings with her. She is a professional and believes in preserving her reputation and contracts at all costs. She has developed a very solid reputation amongst the world's governments and industry and Intrepid Security always have one or two major deployments at any given time.

Although she is no longer directly linked to CLAW, she is still very loyal to Iron Claw and would come to his aid at any time. She has entered into an unusual alliance with Hate of the Underground, forming the unlikely duo of Love and Hate. She is romantically linked with Hate, but not exclusively so. He is a distraction: a welcome distractions, but one she would willingly toss aside if Iron Claw gave her the word.

Quote

"My personal philosophy is to avoid philosophies and rely on instinct."

Powers

A highly trained and experienced agent of CLAW, Lovena has survived many years in the clandestine organisation and has emerged as one of their finest. She leads a professional security firm and has a very tactical mind. She has access to a wide variety of equipment, both conventional and high-tech. She is a dangerous woman in hand to hand combat, having trained in kung fu as well as honed her body and mind to the peaks of human ability.

Appearance

Lovena Saunders is tall and slender with tight muscles and a confident posture which borders on arrogance. She has dark curled black hair and alert brown eyes. The Intrepid Security uniform is a serviceable black body armour, but as the head of the company, Lovena also wears a white tunic over the top when she goes on missions.

Notes

It's been a busy month obviously, but here's the latest addition to the project. It does raise the question about who Hate is and what exactly are his band of revolutionary Undergound agents? Maybe the next country (Japan) will cast some light on that.

#86 YABAI (Japan)

yabai.jpg

YABAI

Shunichi Kazayuki

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

On a high school excursion to a science fair in Tokyo, fifteen year old Shunichi Kazayuki was bitten by a radioactive frilled-neck lizard which was on loan from Australia. The impulsive teenager had goaded the lizard and was bitten after extended harassment. He was taken to hospital but no damage was detected. After the initial attention died down Shunichi found himself alone in his grandmother's apartment. His parents had died when he was young and he was being raised by his mother's mother, although the old woman was very weak and confined to sitting for most of the day. The reckless Shunichi became a law unto himself as he entered adolescence and without a firm hand he had become a local street punk.

The lizard bite set off a slow chain reaction within his body, replacing or upgrading his cells with irradiated ones which granted him superior physical abilities. He noticed these enhancements gradually and never attributed them to the lizard bite, but as he reached maturity he realised that he was far more stronger and faster than anyone around him. He decided to make the most of these abilities, which he assumed were uberhuman in origin, and approached the local street gangs which he had admired from afar.

He was turned away and found himself labelled as a freak in his immediate neighbourhood in Nagoya. The city was fast becoming too small for his interests, so Shunichi moved to Tokyo, leaving his grandmother in the care of her neighbours: something which nearly broke the old woman's heart. In Tokyo he assumed the identity of Yabai, a street name originally used by the Yakuza which meant "heat is on". He had decided that his powers had originated at the science fair and styled his costume on a lizard, giving credit to the anonymous Australian lizard.

As Yabai, he managed to create a stir in the streets, breaking up crime in equal measure to causing general chaos and mayhem. He seemed unsure about what his goals were, but gradually his attention turned to the relatively easy affair of stealing what he wanted. No one seemed willing or able to stand in his way. His natural abilities were a match for the police and the Yakuza, who he had hoped would take notice of him, seemed more concerned in ongoing conflicts and gave him a wide berth as well.

Frustration about being left in the shadows drove him to break into Ichiban Media where he stole a prototype photon mask. He had planned to steal games but when he found the mask he realised that the way to make himself more noticed was to increase his efficiency and capabilities. The mask gave him offensive abilities while also giving him a more cutting-edge look. He continued to break into high-tech facilities in the search of advanced weaponry, but he never really settled on anything except micro-hook attachments for his gloves and feet.

With the return of Senshudan One, Yabai has shown an interest in facing off against uberhumans and testing his abilities against theirs. Although he is not a villain who revels in mass destruction, he is no law-abiding citizen. He has broken many laws and has shown no remorse, apart from using some of his stolen money to relocate his grandmother to Tokyo. She seems to have forgiven him for his earlier betrayal, and thinks that he is working for a media organisation.

Personality

Yabai is a happy go lucky thief who is immersed in Tokyo's youth sub-cultures. He is widely known amongst the younger generations of Tokyo and his anti-hero status has inspired several underground manga comics. He has flirted with the idea of being a hero, but much prefers to live by his own set of standards, sometimes leaping to the assistance of Tokyo citizens in trouble, but mostly flying high amongst the silver towers of the city taking what he wants and living life to the fullest.

Quote

"I'm the original super-freak! Accept no gaijin imitation."

Powers

Yabai's body has mutated since being bitten by the radioactive lizard, triggering his uberhuman sixth sense ability while also enhancing his physical prowess which has made him much stronger and faster than any normal human. He has shown himself to be a superb hand to hand combatant, mostly because of his uncanny ability to predict opponent's movements but also because of his uberhuman strength which delivers quite a punch.

In addition to his natural abilities, Yabai also utilises stolen high tech gadgets such as his photon mask which can project light in various forms; a functioning radio headset and miniature micro-hook attachments on his gloves and boots which enable him to climb walls effortlessly, seemingly defying gravity.

Appearance

Yabai's costume is well known across areas frequented by Tokyo's youth. He wears an orange bodysuit underneath a black armoured vest which is trimmed with golden reptilian scales. He wears gloves and boots which are also trimmed with scales, and which have retractable micro-hooks enabling him to climb most surfaces. His identity is obscured by his photon mask which has two very large raised lenses. His hair is exposed and is laced with hair product giving him an impressive spiky look.

Because of the mutation he has a very well defined physique, something he hides in his civilian identity by wearing baggy clothing and trying to look inconspicuous. This is an act, of course, and something he feels he needs to follow in order to maintain his more exciting and flashy 'anti-hero' identity.

#87 DOCTOR AMALGAM I (Jordan)

doctoramalgam.jpg

DOCTOR AMALGAM (AL MALGHAM)

Dr Mazen Murad

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Mazen Murad became bored with medicine during his university education and began to dabble in more arcane texts, going on to join the scholars of Al Tauaman who were instrumental in opposing extremist factions after the end of war in 1967. Al Tauaman became the guardians of the Jordanian king and have remained so to the present day.

Murad took on the name Doctor Amalgam, bringing knowledge of both science and magic to Al Tauaman, and during the 1970s he was seen in public several times opposing supernatural threats alongside the other scholars. The 1980s and 1990s saw a rapid decline in the activities of Al Tauaman and by the turn of the century the Jordanian royal family issued a statement to the effect that the group no longer existed: its members having all but died out. In the same year, Five Pillars visited Amman and reassured the Jordanian people that they would remain protected from any threats.

While Al Tauaman had ceased to function, Murad was still alive. The other members had, indeed, been killed or lost to the cause, but Murad had simply grown too old for such activities. He remained with the Jordanian royal family as mystic and medical advisor, although his role has been diminished since the pledge of Five Pillars.

Recently, one of his daughters has taken over the mantle of Doctor Amalgam and begun a career as a costumed adventurer. He monitors her progress with great interest and sees himself as both her protector and her tutor (although he had very little to do with her upbringing and development prior to her interest in the Doctor Amalgam persona).

Personality

Murad probably was heroic and brave in his early years, but since the 1980s he has gradually slipped into a very comfortable and risk-free life. He eats and drinks too much, spends too much time on his back and abhors most forms of exercise. He has convinced himself that he has earned his retirement, but in reality he has given in to the pleasures and luxuries that his role as a royal retainer grant him.

Since the arrival of the second Doctor Amalgam, however, there has been a spark in his eye. Although he would never consider a return to superheroics himself, he does see the potential for Ghayda.

Quote

"Daughter, there will be time later for such things, such concerns... for now let us simply sit here and enjoy the hospitality of our esteemed patrons."

Powers

Doctor Amalgam is a practitioner of magic, able to draw upon mystic energy and bind it to his will. The extent of his abilities has diminished since his halcyon days with Al Tauaman, but he is still quite gifted (although he is dreadfully out of practice in most areas due to his apathy when effort is called for). His most frequent magic involves animating objects such as chairs and carpets which he uses to fly through the air or ensnare opponents; as well as an ability to call upon a dark shadow-like energy. Theoretically if he applied himself more then he could draw upon a much greater variety of spells, but it simply is not in his character.

Appearance

Murad is a man in his sixties who has spent the better part of two decades living in luxury. Although he indulges himself quite often his body remains quite lean, although he lacks physical strength or resilience. He has hard brown eyes, a creased brow and a thick black beard. During his time with Al Tauaman he came into possession of a runic vambrace which once granted him enhanced magical powers, but the item has long since been drained of power. Murad will, however, sometimes wear the vambrace. It is golden with ruby-red inlaid runes.

#87 DOCTOR AMALGAM II (Jordan)

doctoramalgam2.jpg

DOCTOR AMALGAM II

Ghayda Olmert

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

The fourth child of Dr Mazen Murad, Ghayda grew up unnoticed by her father. She craved his attention but found that he was content to live with his own reflection as company, often shunning his entire family to spend time at one of the royal family's palaces. Ghayda discovered he was Doctor Amalgam through coincidence while she was in Saudi Arabia at a humanitarian convention. She met Abdul Il-Nimri at the convention who was once a member of her father's group of mystic scholars, Al Tauaman, although he had long since moved on to more profitable endeavours. Il-Nimri had begun recruiting dissatisfied young Arabs to assist with Fatwa's impending attacks on Arabic states which had the support of the Five Pillars. Ghayda and some of the other young members of the convention were kidnapped by Il-Nimri, who planned to indoctrinate them via demonic magic. Il-Nimri had enjoyed success in previous brainwashing experiments but didn't factor on Ghayda's presence.

The Al Tauaman group had installed a safety clause in their membership. No member could turn their powers upon another member without terrible consequences. Il-Nimri had no idea that the daughter of Doctor Amalgam was one of his potential dissidents, but as soon as his ritual had begun, Ghayda found herself channelling the magical energy back towards Il-Nimri.

Images of the original Al Tauaman group appeared and Ghayda recognised her father. Il-Nimri also made the connection but was consumed by fire before he could escape. Ghayda returned to Amman and confronted her father who acquiesced to her demands that he train her in the magic of Doctor Amalgam. They have been working side by side for two years and Ghayda has shown a great affinity for magic, possibly due to Il-Nimri's attack which had been channelled through her body and mind.

Ghayda has embraced her father's former identity - much more than he did himself - and the new Doctor Amalgam has made many public appearances in the past year, although her actions and abilities still label her as a rookie.

Personality

Passionate and headstrong, Ghayda has more potential than her father ever did. Whereas he was lazy and easily bored, she is intense and hungry for knowledge. She has made great progress in her mystical studies but she is always looking for further knowledge and power (something which she knows will get her into trouble sooner or later). Her overconfidence can also run out of control and she has found herself in seriously dangerous situations as a result of her boasting. Ghayda can see how impulsive she is and regrets her actions frequently; but at the same time she is so full of optimism and verve that she refuses to curtail any of her reckless behaviour in case she turns out like her father.

Quote

"I will seize what is in front of me every time. Waiting is for the last generation."

Powers

The second Doctor Amalgam is a student of magic, having shown great aptitude for calling forth and manipulating mystical energy. She is able to create a variety of effects, all of which are less powerful versions of her father's magic. She tends to rely on animating objects around her rather than using magic to directly attack opponents.

She wears a helmet which grants her limited protection from mental attacks while also protecting her identity.

Appearance

Doctor Amalgam is impressive. She wears a turquoise mask with a rose-pink veil attached by a golden crescent moon. Her costume is reinforced with a light blue vest and long split skirt, which she wears over a pink blouse.

Out of costume, Ghayda is a pretty girl with sun-streaked light brown hair, inquisitive brown eyes and a quick smile. She is vibrant and radiates expectation, traits which had branded her as unlady-like in the royal household. She works at a palace as a maid, but her passion is with humanitarian organisations. She isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and tends to wear trousers and blouses.

Notes

My sister and I use to play super hero role playing games when we were teenagers, although I think we played Marvel Super Heroes. One of her characters was from Jordan.

Although I didn't roll up a second character I thought it'd be nice to give Cassie's old character a new lease of life. The second Dr Amalgam isn't a princess but I think she has some similar characteristics to my sister's old character.

#88 GLOW WYRM (Kazakhstan)

glowwyrm.jpg

GLOW WYRM

Mozhar Akmetzhan

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Identified as a genius at an early age, Mozhar was compelled to work at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site near Semey. Along with many other workers, Mozhar was exposed to lethal radiation in the course of his work at Semey, but unlike many of the others, Mozhar survived for many years. His work was generally confined to maintenance and some systems work but the keen intellect of Mozhar managed to pick up a lot of information that he wasn't supposed to be privy to.

When the Nuclear Test Site was closed down, Mozhar was sent to a gulag along with an indeterminate number of other workers, as a way of hiding the ill treatment which became a way of life at the Site. Mozhar and the others weren't expected to live long out of sight, but Mozhar had an ubergene and it had been activated by his prolonged exposure to the radiation. His skin changed into a yellowish colour and he was able to exude a radioactive substance. The authorities panicked and locked him away in a solitary section of the gulag. Orders were given to have him executed but somehow the paperwork was lost and against the odds Mozhar survived.

During the course of his solitary confinement and frequent periods of starvation, Mozhar suffered a prolonged breakdown. When one day a young guard made the mistake of coming into the cell with the meagre food for the week, Mozhar grabbed him and within seconds the boy had been coated with a glowing liquid. The desperate Mozhar was quite insane and bit into the boy, taking a large chunk of his arm. After the initial frenzy, Mozhar realised that the boy was in his control.

No one came looking for the guard and Mozhar used him to explore his newly found power. After some time, perhaps a day or a week, Mozhar escaped from the gulag. Many people died, but no information on the incident has survived. Since Mozhar was supposed to have been executed earlier, no official reaction was ever issued. However, the Soviets dispatched their uberhuman agents to track and capture Mozhar.

It was inevitable. Mozhar was captured and re-educated, becoming a part of a covert Soviet uberhuman team as Glow Wyrm. The team was short lived and when the Soviet Union fell apart, Mozhar slipped away to esvape the government's control.

He surfaced in Poland and established himself as a small-time crime lord, but moved on soon after, emerging from obscurity now and then across a number of countries of the former Soviet Union. He has recently established himself as a crime lord in his home country of Kazakhstan, taking up residence in the former Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site which was at the genesis of his problems. From this sanctuary, Mozhar has begun to create a surprisingly effective criminal empire, although it is currently limited to a few large cities in Kazakhstan.

He has worked for the Chinese government in the past, although details are mostly unknown. Given the nature of his powers most people suspect he was involved in the interrogation and conversion of political dissidents.

Personality

After a life time of being dominated by authority, Mozhar is timid but also possesses a fiery rage which constantly bubbles beneath the surface. Whenever he is thwarted, whether it be a grand plan or a desire to enjoy a little peace and quiet, he is liable to become abusive and cruel, often killing people around him in grotesque displays of his power. He is a man who wants recognition and respect but at heart he knows he is not worthy. Anyone who does show respect, therefore, is simultaneously his best friend and obviously a liar.

Since emerging in Kazakhstan, Mozhar has shown a little more stability. He no longer has the urge to bite into people's arms. His plans to build a criminal empire are based on reason and financial viability. It appears that he is making good choices, but the reality is that he is only building an empire so that he can invade and destroy Russia. Everything in his life is based around the premise that Russia is the enemy and has destroyed any hope he has of a normal life.

"You are now belonging to me, in every way and for ever more, yes."

Powers

Glow Wyrm has the ability to exude a radioactive substance which, when covering a human or animal enables Mozhar to control their actions. The substance is psychic as well as radioactive, so while it allows him control of the subject it also kills the subject. While this is his primary power, Mozhar also possesses the ability to project the 'glow' as a burst of light, temporarily blinding people and radio equipment. He is immune to the effects of high radiation and is also somewhat resistant to mental attacks, although he is by no means considered a mentalist.

Appearance

Mozhar Akmetzhan appears to be an aging, balding man with too much gold jewellry and an expanding waistline. He is short, and wears lifts to make him appear taller. He wears clothes which are far too young and garish for him and he looks like a person doing a bad impression of the Russian Mafia. His skin is a soft glowing yellow, although with effort he can reduce this effect. He constantly emits radiation and can be detected easily using geiger counters - something the Russian authorities have employed on ocassion.

He doesn't wear a costume.

Notes

This is the first character picture I did completely free-hand, and apart from the fact he's a short-balding dude I think he turned out okay. I'll try for some more free-hand characters in the future rather than relying on templates.

#89 BLACK MAMBA (Kenya)

blackmamba.jpg

BLACK MAMBA

Makena Ndereba

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

It's not always a good thing to start a relationship with a power-hungry politician. When Makena Ndereba first met Joseph Suji he seemed like the suave and sophisticated older man who wanted to spend money on her and make her happy, but after less than a year he abruptly left her and soon after married his other lover, the older and more politically connected Wangari. Makena wasn't respectable enough for Suji's ambitions.

Makena probably could have coped with the rejection, but soon after she discovered that Wangari was trying to have her killed in an effort to cover up any possible hurdle to Suji's political aspirations. Cars suddenly seemed to want to run her over and strange people started following her home. At first she was lucky to escape the potential hit-and-runs and stalkers, but one night she was bundled into the back of a van and driven at high speed to the outskirts of Mombasa. She remembered being scared but little else. Rough hands pulled her out of the darkness and then into a warehouse. She could smell something sharp like chemicals and then she was shoved up a ladder with one man at either side of her. At the top of the ladder she managed to pull the blindfold from her eyes and it was then she saw the large tank of bubbling chemicals below her. There was a shove and she fell.

Like most of Wangari's plans, Makena's death didn't turn out very well. Rather than perish, someone the threat of imminent death and the strange cocktail of chemicals managed to infuse Makena with energy, triggering her ubergene and transforming her from a regular every-day jewellery store assistant, into the superfast Black Mamba.

It wasn't an easy transformation, though, and Makena spent many weeks suffering from intense pain as well as the build-up of vengeance which wouldn't be satiated. She was in a fever and sped around Mombasa embarrassing Suji and his new fiancee. Suji was ridiculed by the press, banished by his Party and questioned by police, but he wouldn't stand for a trial and killed himself rather than admit to his transgressions (which apparently included bribery, fraud and two counts of attempted murder). Wangari disappeared before Suji's suicide, and no one really ever found out what happened to her. Some suspect she was the first victim of the Black Mamba while others believe she was killed by Suji.

Makena had nothing to do with Wangari's disappearance, although the fact she was now gone greatly relieved her. After her vengeance was spent, Black Mamba had nothing more to do and Makena thought of retiring - even before she had begun.

But then she began to miss the adrenaline rushes, the spectacle of running high speed through the evening traffic. Black Mamba settled on a new career, one which wasn't fuelled by vengeance or even greed. She would steal, yes, she would steal anything she fancied or was presumed to be safe from thieves; but she stole for the thrill of the chase rather than the financial reward. Most of the time she returns the goods the next day, or gives them to a charity (whichever one she comes across first).

As such she is considered a pest and a nuisance rather than a major threat to lives. Nonetheless, Black Mamba is hunted by the Kenyan authorities as well as Africa Force 1.

Personality

Even before he metabolism was condensed a thousand-fold, Makena was a motormouth. She hates the awkward silences that sometimes spring up in social situations and vows to fill them up with whatever it is that comes into her head. She is harmless and fun, something which endears her to the superheroes of Africa Force 1 while also irritating them no end. She is a super villain who wants to have fun but who doesn't necessarily know when to stop. She has been a nuisance to the members of Africa Force 1 since their inception but has also teamed-up with them on two ocassions, both times when opposing the murderous actions of Congo.

Quote

"Oops, I set off the alarm... again. Where are those cops?"

Powers

Black Mamba has emerged from her near-death experience with an accelerated metabolism and the ability to move at almost supersonic speeds. She is whipfast and while she has trouble staying still, when she is moving she is almost impossible to catch.

Appearance

The Black Mamba is built for speed. She is lithe and muscular, without much body fat at all. Her body is streamlined and fits into a skintight black and white bodysuit with green and purple piping at the elbows, calves and waist. She always wears flashy ear-rings (which she buys legitimately at the store she works in) and has an equally flashy smile. To conceal her identity, Makena wears a black mask which also provides her with nightvision.

Makena has short black hair which she tends to straighten, despite the effort in doing so. She appears quite outgoing and pretty in her casual attired, while extremely sexy and elusive as Black Mamba.

#90 PATRIOT III (Kiribati)

patriot3.jpg

PATRIOT

Major Adrienne Jeffries

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

The first Patriot emerged from the bloody battle on Tarawa during the Second World War. Vincent Jeffries battled against legions of Japanese soldiers with an unearthly resilience, and his valiant actions rallied other Marines which helped turn the bloody tide of the battle. After the American's success, Jeffries was sent back to the United States for medical attention. He had suffered greatly, taking more than twenty bullets and numerous bayonet charges, but the young Kentucky Marine was still breathing.

After the War, Jeffries became known as Patriot and his war effort was covered in an issue of Time Magazine which catapulted him into the role of American Hero. He remained in the Marines and attempted to remain the same down-to-earth man he had been before the War. He eventually married and drifted into the background as more and more uberhumans emerged in the United States. During the opening stages of America's involvement in the Vietnam War, Jeffries was killed which resulted in a surge in support for the War. After the death of the first Patriot, the American military decided to pass the identity on to another soldier to maintain the reputation and the support Patriot had garnered. This second Patriot was Captain Lindsay Grant. While he never captured the widespread public support of his predecessor, Grant did serve the Army well. He fought throughout the Vietnam War and then in several other conflicts during the 1980s and 1990s. He was killed under suspicious circumstances during the liberation of Kuwait in 1991. No body was recovered and although there was an investigation, no public record was issued.

Jeffries' grand-daughter Adrienne had, meanwhile, joined the Infantry (1st Division) and had fought in the Gulf War. After the second Patriot's disappearance, Adrienne was approached by military intelligence and ordered to undergo scientific tests which triggered her latent ubergene. She possessed similar powers to her grandfather and she was ordered to assume the mantle of Patriot, something she was proud to do. She was transferred to the Devil Brigade where she worked her way up to the rank of Major. The emergence of Major American as America's most popular government superhero led to a rather acrimonious confrontation between Major American and Patriot. The argument, which involved a very short-lived brawl, was caught on television and played on most networks. Patriot was reprimanded and has since refused to appear in public with Sanction and operates solely within the edicts of the American Army.

She is currently on deployment to Iraq where she has been working since 2006.

Personality

Adrienne grew up as an Army Brat, being the only child of an infantryman and the only grandchild of the first Patriot. She takes her heritage very seriously and is an honourable and patriotic woman who exemplifies the traditions of the American Army. She has gained the Army's respect as well, particularly through her frequent acts of valor in Iraq and before that, in Afghanistan. She defends her men and women against any threat and will always be the last to leave a scene, never thinking of her own safety above that of her team.

She is well known for her loyalty and strength, although the on-air conflict with Major American still haunts her and media representatives often refer to it (probably in the hopes of a rematch). Although she will never comment publicly on the argument she believes that Major American is an insult to the flag, and that he represents everything that is crass about Sanction and the populist uberhumans who say they serve the American nation. Major American may have said something sexist or joked about the Army to trigger the conflict, but it is Patriot's deep seated belief that Major American is a phoney that led to that actual fight.

Quote

"The flag I wear into combat is the flag I will fight under until my death."

Powers

The third Patriot shares similar powers with those of her grandfather, the first Patriot. She is resilient, in peak human form and has an uncanny ability to recover from most injuries. In addition to these natural abilities which mark her beyond what is normally possible for humans, Patriot also wields the Patriot Gun which is a high powered handgun which is constantly being upgraded. It is capable of shooting through most armour, but Patriot generally uses the less-lethal rubber bullets. The Gun has various components which can be changed or modified. The modifications are generally made in the combat field using components from her various pouches.

Appearance

Adrienne Jeffries is a severe woman who doesn't smile often because there really isn't all that much to smile about, especially considering that America is at war. She has shoulder-length light brown hair and blue eyes, although she isn't really considered feminine (possibly because of her obvious military bearing and steel gaze). She is almost always in combat fatigues or the Patriot Armour which is composed of a hard plastic. The chest plate is dark blue, the arms are red and the shoulder guards are white with the American flag emblazoned in the centre. She generally wears fatigues over the top of her armoured legs as she is uncomfortable in the world of super heroes and doesn't want to lose touch with what she really is - a soldier.

Notes

Given that the i-Kiribati population is so low I decided against creating a super hero from that culture. Instead I brought in the Battle of Tarawa as the focal point and created an American patriot character.

I originally planned to have three Patriots from the same family but I decided it would be good to have the Army try and create their own, and then have to come back to the Jeffries family and sign up one of the original's descendents.

Re: #42 TOHUBOHU (Cote d'Ivoire)

Just a small correction to the name

if you want him to be called chaos and disorder(confusion) in Hebrew then the name should be Tohuvavohu (To-hu-va-vo-hu) the name you picked is an English word derived from the Hebrew word so not an exact match.

if you need any other Hebrew names or words let me know and I will be glad to help you

(me?? ooo... I'm just a native Hebrew speaker :-D)

TOHUBOHU

Levi Rosier

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Levi Rosier joined the French Army when he was eighteen and was involved in the United Nations peacekeeping campaign in the Balkans. During time under gunfire, Levi found himself shocked out of his own body. He could suddenly see the world from within the body of his friend, Francois. During the confusion, Levi's battalion were hit by heavy fire and Levi's body was killed.

For months Levi stayed within the body of his friend, but the strain on his mind and the body of Francois became obvious to all around him. After being discharged from the Army he ended up in hospital. Francois was dying and Levi realised that it was because of the possession. Instead of letting his friend live, Levi held on even tighter. When Francois' body could no longer go on, Levi leapt across into the body of a nurse. He never looked back, but felt hounded so much that he left France and headed to the Middle East where he hoped to find some peace amongst the warring Israelis.

Once in Israel Levi took a chance and approached the government, pleading with them to help him regain his body. The hero-scientist Solomon Bloom was brought in to assist. Bloom created a power suit which would contain Levi's energy and thus release his need to live within other people.

Levi was embraced by Israel and became the hero Tohubohu, a short-time member of Cabala.

Even though he had discovered a way to live without a physical body, Levi still longed for a real body. He became obsessed with the other people around him, and routinely jumped into their bodies to experience what they experienced. This behaviour was initially tolerated, or ignored, but Levi's obsession grew to such an extent that he was expelled from the Cabala and from Israel itself.

Still keeping the name Tohubohu, Levi found himself within the ranks of the French Foreign Legion, although he kept his nature secret. During one campaign in Northern Africa, Levi possessed the body of one of his opponents and was surprised to discover that the person was not fully human. The Foreign Legion had been hired to fight against one of their old offshoots, a cyborg battalion of Legionnaires. Levi was horrified and quickly returned to his own body, but not before he caused enough damage to the cyborg to render it senseless. Levi understood that his powers went far beyond the ability to possess other bodies. By lashing out at others he was able to inflict damage and even death.

While this new power excited him, Levi didn't give much thought to his targets. After an hour he had defeated his own battalion and stood by himself in front of the cyborg Legion. The leader, Revenant, extended a welcome to Levi and the young French-Israeli accepted.

Personality

Tohubohu is the Hebrew word for confusion and chaos. Levi has been consumed by his psychic nature which has distanced him from the rest of humanity to such an extent that he cannot remember what it was to be human, while at the same time fuelling his desire to regain such human sensations. He is a monster of pure psychic energy, trapped in a containment suit which keeps him from dissipating forever. While giving the impression of being human, Levi is far from it.

Quote

"It's time to see this from a different set of eyes, ma chere."

Powers

Tohubohu is able to possess the bodies and minds of other humans, although after losing his own body he now relies on a containment suit created by Solomon Bloom in order to continue his existence. The suit is made from an adaptive material which forms around the host body so that whatever body Levi possesses wears the Legion uniform.

In addition to his possession ability, Levi is also able to cause extreme pain through touch. His body is made of energy and resistant to physical attacks, although most energies are still able to affect him.

Appearance

In his natural state, Tohubohu is a crackling purple energy, but through the control of his containment suit, which has been modified to look like Legion armour, he is able to take on the appearance of a human. His form can be stretched and manipulated by his own mind so that he can appear quite unnatural, especially when he strikes - a combination of psychic energy and a dissolving body.

Like all members of Legion, Tohubohu wears a highly resistant black body armour with dark grey pads on the legs, shoulders, boots and gloves. His mask has a stylised skull motif with green eyes (infrared visor), and this symbol is repeated on the shoulder pads. There is a Legion symbol on the left side of his chest: a lightning-like 'L' in yellow.

#91 DAGAN RAIN-MAKER I (Kuwait)

daganrainmaker1.jpg

DAGAN RAIN-MAKER I

Muhammad Al-Damin

Powered Armour Character Sheet (Click Here)

Skilled Normal Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

In May 1991, the United States of America assisted Kuwait in establishing the Dagan Unit - a special forces division of the Kuwaiti National Police which would feature Kuwait's superhero representative. In the wake of the Iraqi invasion, Kuwait was convinced that it needed a superhuman presence. With America's financial assistance, as well as Iron Amir's technical ability and prototype designs, the Dagan Unit was launched at the end of 1992 with one functional Dagan Rainmaker Armour.

The Armour was to be worn by an elite police officer who would become a hero for the country, offering security from external threats as well as providing the country with much-needed rain. The combination of high-powered defensive and offensive capabilities coupled with the benefits of atmospheric ionisation which would lead to precipitation, was a major hit with the people of Kuwait. The Dagan Rainmakers have enjoyed widespread support and popularity since 1992.

Muhammad Al-Damin began work at the Dagan Unit as a technical support officer and first stepped into the Rainmaker Armour during an attack by Fatwa. The terrorists had struck at the Unit's headquarters and killed one of the pilots, leaving one Rainmaker Armour inert. Al-Damin took the opportunity and assisted the other Armour in the short but fierce firefight. After the conflict had passed, Al-Damin was given the opportunity to take on the role permanently. He has since shown a deep affinity with the Armour.

Al-Damin is an uberhuman with the ability to manipulate technology. Some call him a technopath and it is this affinity with machines which has enabled him to become one of the best pilots to take on the Dagan Armour since 1992.

Personality

Al-Damin is something of a perfectionist and expects others to maintain his own high standards. He can be critical of others, but doesn't see the conlfict this can sometimes cause. Some people call him naive, but he is hardly that - having lived through some harrowing times since first donning the Rainmaker Armour. His appearance is somewhat disarming. His eyes are wide and searching, giving the impression of innocence. He doesn't take much attention of how he looks, but others have commented on it and have assumed that because he looks innocent and naive that he must be. Al-Damin is a smart man with an affinity with technology.

Quote

"Ooh that's going to take me an hour to fix... Can you stop throwing the bad guys around like that? A simple nitrogen spray will immobilise them - and avoid the unnecessary damage you're doing to the base."

Powers

The Dagan Rainmaker Armour is based on the Iron Amir suit although there have been modifications, mostly through American research and development. The suit is designed for two major purposes: defence and its rain-making capabilities. It has a range of offensive capabilities such as concussive (hard air) blasts, an ion blaster array in the fingertips, liquid nitrogen spray (also in the fingertips) as well as the capability to enhance the pilot's strength to an uberhuman level (often able to press in excess of 25 tons).

Its defensive capability includes a flexible micro-chainmail armour and full life support systems, as well as a range of enhanced sensors and the ability to fly. In addition to these, mostly security-based abilities, the Rainmaker Armour is able to generate a high-range ionisation effect in the atmosphere which can generally lead to the production of precipitation, most likely in the form of rain. In perfect conditions this can generate sustained rain storms up to 8km for a period of up to six hours. This ability has made the Rainmaker Armour highly sought after in the Middle East region.

Al-Damin is also an uberhuman able to psionically re-arrange technical components and spare parts to create functioning machines. He has always had this gift but has been trained in its applications since joining the Dagan Unit. He has shown an ability to create a laptop computer, a portable radar and Geiger counter, as well as various weaponry in the field. This ability is somewhat diminished when he is wearing his Armour.

Appearance

The Dagan Rainmaker is a silver armour with a series of matt-black panels (which assist with solar energy absorption). It is a fully contained armour which conceals the wearer's identity. The helmet has silver lens and a mouth slit for clear vocalisation. The armour generally stands at seven feet tall, depending on the wearer to some extent, and weighs in excess of 650lbs.

Out of the armour, Muhammad Al-Damin appears to be a lithe man in his thirties with short dark brown hair and large pleading eyes. He generally wears his police uniform but has times when he is more comfortable in a t-shirt and cargo pants.

Notes

For this entry I had to work with 150 point characters and as you can see here I have kind of 'tweaked' the creation. The Dagan Rain-Makers have multiform, and their multiform (secret id) is based on 150 points.

Not exactly cheating, but more a creative use of rules...

DAGAN RAIN-MAKER II

Daoud Abbas Al-Gallaf

The Dagan Rainmakers have enjoyed widespread support and popularity since 1992.

Daoud Abbas Al-Gallaf has been operating the second Dagan Rainmaker Armour since 2004 and is the sixth man to do so. He had worked as a police officer in Kuwait and as a United Nations peacekeeper before being asked to join the Dagan Unit. He has shown an affinity for the Armour, particularly in engaging in close combat where he can make good use of the Armour's enhanced strength.

Personality

Daoud has had a wide range of assignments and is generally considered a model police officer, although since joining the Dagan Unit his brashness has increased. He is obviously impressed with the power of the Armour and has been known to get carried away with the 'action', sometimes to the detriment of passers-by and public property. His 'keeper', Agent Khanjar, often reprimands him for his impulsiveness and tendency to flex his muscle in combat situations. He doesn't seem to take the criticism on board, however, and has had a few unofficial reprimands marked against him.

Quote

"Forget the blasters, let's go in for some gold old fashioned rock and rumble."

Powers

The Dagan Rainmaker Armour is based on the Iron Amir suit although there have been modifications, mostly through American research and development. The suit is designed for two major purposes: defence and its rain-making capabilities. Out of the armour, Daoud Abbas Al-Gallaf appears to be an exceptionally fit young man in his mid-twenties. He has dark skin and defined muscles which are the result of frequent training. He generally wears his police uniform although he is equally comfortable in combat fatigues.

#91 AGENT KHANJAR (Kuwait)

khanjar.jpg

AGENT KHANJAR (DAGGER)

Shouq Al-Gedawie

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Shouq Al-Gedawie was given the responsibility of liaising with the two Rainmaker pilots in 2002 after the previous liaison retired from the service. She was chosen because of her fine police service record, as well as for public relations reasons. It was decided that a female liaison would be seen as progressive by Kuwait's Western allies, especially the United States. Shouq is aware that her appointment is partially political, but has no real concerns about it. She is a no-nonsense woman who operates within her limits - be they physical or political.

She has been more active that her predecessor and is regularly on assignments rather than sitting back in the Dagan Unit offices. While maintaining her role as liaison with the two Dagan pilots she also maintains a position in the Kuwaiti National Police as an active agent.

Personality

Shouq Al-Gedawie is stubborn and single-minded. She was appointed because of her fierce refusal to back down in the face of terrorism as well as her assertive interpersonal skills. She is the niece of a decorated war hero and is known throughout the National Police force as a woman who has her eyes on a higher position. Despite this naked ambition, Shouq has worked within the Dagan Unit for six years. She has found that her employment is suffering from a glass ceiling and although she would be even less likely to achieve promotion in the regular police ranks she is finding it difficult to reconcile her ambition with the obviously limited opportunities available to her. To an extent, she has countered this by volunteering for a wide variety of special operations, often going under cover on covert assignments which is something she has been able to do because of her track record with the high profile Dagan Unit.

She works relatively well with the Dagan Rainmaker pilots, Daoud Abbas Al-Gallaf and Muhammad Al-Damin. She out-ranks them both and has been in the Dagan Unit longer than them as well, although she has never been offered the position as a pilot. It is possible that she could take over the position on short notice as she has had extensive experience in the Unit and has, at times, worn the Armour within the confines of the headquarters generally to test equipment and new additions to the Armours offensive and defensive capabilities.

Quote

"Under Section 2.03 of the Dagan Unit Procedures and Protocols Manual, you are expected to comply with my requests. I understand that you may not have read that far in the manual, Lieutenant Al-Damin, but I can assure you that despite your apparent illiteracy you are in breach of at least three sub-clauses of the Protocols. I suggest you close your mouth, rethink your argument and get me that cup of coffee. Now."

Powers

Agent Khanjar (Agent Dagger) is a competent and experienced police officer who has experience in the field and behind a desk. She is a capable hand-to-hand combatant, especially with her blade; as well as being an expert marksman. Apart from her police training, however, she remains a regular human with no uberhuman abilities.

Appearance

Shouq Al-Gedawie is an attractive woman in her mid-thirties. She has shoulder-length reddish blonde hair which is something of a distinctive feature, often commented on by her colleagues, rivals and the media. She was hired as much for her looks as for her experience and qualifications. She generally wears casual clothing and rarely dons the police uniform, although she does often wear a concealed Kevlar jacket.

Re: Around the World With A New Character Each Week

Why is she blonde anyway?

I did a search on the web for Kuwaiti women and there was a blonde. I based the picture on her (her face anyway). One of her parents may have been British (or something).

Could also be the result of regular use of the peroxide bottle.

#92 BERKUTCHI (Kyrgyzstan)

berkutchi.jpg

BERKUTCHI

Kubatbek Masaliyev

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Masaliyev was known as the Red Eagle during the 1980s and early 1990s when he was part of the often violent incarnation of CLAW. Not much was known of his past and generally during those times no one thought to ask questions. Red Eagle was a bloodthirsty killer who operated across Europe and particularly within Russia at the behest of Steel Claw. When Steel Claw was usurped, Masaliyev was one of the many mercenaries who fled the new CLAW, taking the opportunity to start their own criminal organisations or solo careers. CLAW didn't allow many of the former members escape without some kind of payment - whether it be regular financial payments to CLAW, unique franchise opportunities whereby the mercenaries operated on their own but under the general umbrella of CLAW, or more frequently they paid with their lives (or limbs).

Masaliyev was hospitalised in 1998 after a lethal scrap with Cat Scratch Fever. His artificial wings were torn from his body and his claw hand was severed, leaving him haemorrhaging in a back alley in Moscow. He was in hospital for several months before being transferred to prison under the supervision of the Russian FSB. During his incarceration Masaliyev was given a pardon for his crimes and forced to undertake some training with the FSB which is where he met another native of Kyrgyzstan: Snow Leopard. The two men took an instant dislike to each other, something which was exacerbated when Snow Leopard and Masaliyev were cast out of the training regime after the FSB decided to recruit Taiga for the new Russian Dawn team. Snow Leopard and Masaliyev returned to Kyrgyzstan where they were embroiled in a public fight, the end of which saw Snow Leopard disappear from the public eye for a time, and saw Masaliyev again hospitalised.

In a hospital bed far away from prying eyes, Masaliyev found himself close to death and without much prospects of survival. He had a series of fever dreams where he ventured into a land full of demons and sinners. He saw his future there, amongst the damned, but at the same time he realised that many of the damned were only there through the actions of others. Far too often people were forced into crime, or were witnesses to actions which condemned them to damnation. In his dreams he stood against the demons and fought for the souls of those women and children who were dragged into damnation by their murderous husbands or brothers. He fought for the sons of men who had sinned.

When he awoke from the dreams he discovered that the hospital was actually being drawn into another dimension. His dreams were manifestations of the Deathless Ones and their attempt to drag the hospital into their native dimension. Masaliyev left his bed and began to stalk through the corridors. Nurses, doctors and patients were screaming while the demonic Deathless Ones spirited through the hospital causing panic and fear.

Masaliyev confronted the demons and with his bare hand set about strangling them and casting aside their broken bodies. As he worked systematically to destroy the infestation, he came to realise that although his own spiritual self was damaged he could do so much to help spare the misery of others. The Deathless Ones hoped to drag parts of the Earth into their realm by degrading the lives of ordinary humans, by emphasising the sordid crimes and the petty passions of humans.

After fighting for nearly a full day and night, the Deathless Ones turned away, perhaps because they hade found what they were looking for or perhaps because Masaliyev had forced their retreat. It didn't really matter. Masaliyev stumbled out into the night and swore to keep the demons at bay.

He launched several attacks against known CLAW weapons depots and outfitted himself with artificial wings and a blunt artificial hand. He called himself Berkutchi, revealing his family's tradition of eagle hunting. Ever since his reappearance as a vigilante, he has worked tirelessly to eradicate organised crime from the streets of Kyrgyzstan.

He has come into regular conflict with Snow Leopard and the Black Lotus Society.

Personality

Berkutchi is a vigilante who not only breaks laws, he rarely gives them any thought at all. He has been a ruthless hired killer in the past and has only changed slightly. Rather than kill for money he is now killing to avoid condemning innocents to a life in Hell. He believes that he is condemned to be punished eternally for his crimes and does not shy away from this gloomy prospect. Instead he believes that while he is certain to be punished, he is also able to punish other evil-doers and has dedicated his doomed existence to eradicating as much diseased and debilitating organised crime syndicates as he can. He will punish any criminal, but is particularly ruthless when hunting killers.

Masaliyev is known to the world as the former Red Eagle, and although he believes he is a changed man, many people regard him as dangerous as ever. Russian Dawn actively seek to arrest him whenever he enters Russia's territory and the law enforcement agencies of Kyrgyzstan try their best to restrain his actions. The criminals he hunts are also active in trying to kill him, but Berkutchi has proven a very difficult man to kill.

Quote

"There is no excuse for murder. And only one punishment." (translated from Kyrgyz as he has very limited English)

Powers

Masaliyev has been operating as a mercenary for over twenty years and began his career in the employ of CLAW. His body was enhanced with cybernetics over a decade, beginning with crude technology but quickly becoming more powerful and subtle. His right hand was either surgically removed by CLAW or was lost in some other way prior to his employment, but since his first days as Red Eagle his left hand has sported a three-pronged claw. He has replaced this claw with a club since changing his outlook on life. He believes there is something more cleansing in bashing a person to death rather than slicing them.

Other cybernetic enhancements include enhanced vision and hearing, subdermal plating which provides resistance to most forms of injury, reinforced muscles in his arms, torso and legs to provide greater strength, and a whip snare: a thin but strong wire which can be pulled out of his wrists and used to ensnare opponents.

His wings were originally used for flight only, but since stealing more advanced technology he has shaped these wings to become a lethal weapon as well. The versatile and flexible wings are able to propel him through the air at high speeds, as well as strike out at opponents with razor-sharp edges.

Appearance

Masaliyev has a shaved head and thick black moustache. He appears to be in his forties, although his aging has been retarded and his true age is closer to the mid-fifties. He wears a black costume with red around the collar and arms, and a grey belt bordered in red. He has an inverted golden triangle on his chest and a mirror-image one on his belt buckle. His right arm has been replaced by a heavy club decorated with obscure symbols which come from the Deathless Ones' dimension and appeared to Masaliyev in his fever dream.

Notes

Berkutchi is the name of hunting with golden eagles, a traditional practice in Kyrgyzstan.

#93 KHAEN (Laos)

khaen.jpg

KHAEN

Lai Inthavong

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Lai and her twin brother, Ba Thein, were hunted down by the Laotian government after neighbours in their village informed on them. The twins had exhibited uberhuman powers during their early adolescence, and although the other villagers were initially tolerant, after an argument with a disgruntled farmer, the Inthavongs were betrayed. The Laotian government were ruthless when it came to uberhumans and death squads were common. A group of soldiers ambushed the Inthavong family on their way to a neighbouring village. Lai's mother and sister were killed immediately in the gunfire, but her father and twin brother survived and the three of them fled into the mountains.

Lai was always the introspective one of the twins and while she was in hiding she noticed how her father spent more and more time with Ba Thein. Her uber powers were also very limited while Ba Thein's were more impressive. At fifteen he was able to lift an ox over his head and had never been sick in his life. Lai, on the other hand, was able to make small breezes which she used to play the khaen. It soothed her father and brother but didn't bring any more attention.

The family survived for another few months before being caught by the government soldiers. Ba Thein was captured and taken to the capital, Vientiane. Lai and her father escaped again but news carried quickly from the capital and they heard that Ba Thein had been executed. Lai's father never recovered. She began to take care of him, gaining reserves of strength as she fought the elements and the occasional band of soldiers while surviving in the wilderness.

During the next two years Lai's father died, although the cause is not known and Lai never talks about it except in the broadest of terms. She joined with the martial arts trainer, Kha-Nyou, and the two of them organised a kind of underground railway to spirit fugitive uberhumans and other refugees out of the country.

At seventeen years old, Lai is still relatively optimistic about her future and that of her country, but she has seen some terrible things and is never able to stay in one place for very long. The government is determined to hunt her down and destroy her.

Personality

Lai is an orphan who was found herself growing up in a war zone. As an uber in Laos she is considered to be Public Enemy Number One, and in the past two and a half years she has had virtually no rest and is constantly fighting to stay alive. Her outward demeanour is still bright, however, and she will always put others' safety before her own - something which has led to her widespread popularity despite the government's propaganda campaign against her.

She works well with Kha-Nyou, although she is not particularly interested in the philosophy he has so completely embraced. She is intelligent and open-minded, and this sometimes leads her to become slightly frustrated with her lot in life. She has been tempted to flee across the border on many occasions, but something always stops her.

A part of her knows that her future is tied with the future of her country. If she left she would be condemning her homeland to despair.

Quote

"This should put the wind up them, and maybe give us a chance to get across that border."

Powers

Khaen is a low-level aerokinetic, able to manipulate the air around her for limited effects. The first manifestation of her power enabled her to play the khaen pipes without even blowing, and it is a skill she still wields whenever she can. She has expanded her powers to include limited flight, small hard-air shields and focussed air blasts.

However, it is her survival instincts which have kept her alive for so long in such a dangerous country. She is an accomplished hand to hand combatant, thanks in great part to the training of Kha-Nyou.

Appearance

Lai Inthavong is a short, bright eyed young woman. She has beautiful eyes which still retain innocence despite the horrors she has been forced to witness or participate in. She keeps her shoulder-length hair in piggy tails and generally wears a singlet and shorts, with bare feet. She wears steel bracelets on her right wrist which she has used to deflect bullets (although she is hesitant to risk being hit and only uses them when she has no other options). She carries a three and a half foot long khaen pipe on her back. The khaen is her only real possession and she treats it with respect, although she has had to use it to beat back soldiers from time to time.

Notes

Although I drew a picture for Khaen, I never got around to inking it and scanning it. I received an early Christmas present (from myself) when I bought a book and CD which contained 500 manga character images. It's put out by Sweatdrop Studios (ISBN 9781905814039) and all of the images are copyright free and able to be used anywhere. I admit this is a short cut but I did colour this picture, I guess.

I'll be using some of the images as I go through the upcoming countries but I'll still be using my semi-original stuff too - and maybe using these new images as templates.

If anyone is interested in drawing or colouring this book is awesome. It only cost me $45 which is less than 10 cents per picture. Bargain.

#94 Bruninieks Ziemassvetki (Knights of Winter) (Latvia)

Webpage (click here)

Dagnja Balodis (Chairperson)

Stanislavs Vasilevskis

Stanislavs Vasilevskis (Mark II)

Zvaigzne Sieviete (Star Woman)

Background

The Knights of Winter were a small band of uberhumans active in the 1980s. Although they only operated for a little over one year their legacy has continued. Originally formed by independent heroes from Latvia, Estonia and Finland, the Knights were eventually forced to retire by the machinations of the Soviet government.

The current Knights of Winter (Bruninieks Ziemassvetki) is an organisation rather than a team of heroes. It was established just after the fall of the Iron Curtain, although a similar organisation was already in existence in Russia. It simply changed its name and became more public. The organisation is charged with keeping uberhuman threats under control and in this regard it operates something like a prison, although it does also work on assisting uberhumans control their powers.

The current CEO is Dagnja Balodis who has worked with the Numen-Kami Institute and as an advisor to the Russian government.

The Winter Palace is a high-tech prison system and can generally hold threats up to the Beta Level, although with personalised adjustments the facility may also contain threats of a higher order.

Area of Operations

The Knights of Winter is a prison and a scientific organisation. It is based in Riga, Latvia, although it has staff located in some other major European cities, most notably Vienna and London. The Knights do not apprehend prisoners nor do they facilitate travel from the prisoners' point of origin. It simply operates as a 'keeping place'. The governments who wish to take advantage of the facilities must organise their own transport.

Goals

Primarily a business, the Winter Palace has two wings. The first is the prison wing which is well defended and draws in a substantial amount of revenue for the organisation. The second wing is dedicated to research into uberhuman abilities, particularly in measuring power levels as well as formulating restraining and negating devices.

Reputation

The Winter Knights enjoys a solid reputation as a prison for uberhumans. Although not the premier facility for such incarceration the Winter Palace is more affordable and less stringent on some regulations. It is closely aligned with Russia and there have been unsubstantiated allegations of poor treatment of inmates, although such accusations were from a time before the current CEO arrived.

The first team of Winter Knights were seen as defenders of individual rights, particular in the face of communism. Their legacy has been hijacked to a certain extent, and there are some in the community who feel that the prison should not be taking the name of the heroes.

Notes

The organisation page is up and active, but the individual characters need some tweaks in their background write-ups. I'll have them done over the next few days.

#94 ZVAIGZNE SIEVIETE (Latvia)

zvaigzne.jpg

ZVAIGZNE SIEVIETE

Alise Baumanis

Character Sheet (click Here)

Background

Zvaigzne Sieviete is Latvia's only uberhuman: something she takes very seriously including copious amounts of autograph-signing and publicity appearances. She was born in Germany to Latvian parents and only moved to Riga when she was seventeen, which was the same year she discovered her uberhuman powers. However, before her density-manipulation powers manifested she was already showing signs of genius when it came to gadgetry.

When she burst onto the public scene in Riga, her connection with the criminal Professor was revealed. The Professor and Oktober had attempted to take control of the uberhuman prison, Winter Palace, and Alise opposed them as Zvaigzne Sieviete, Star Woman. She was defeated by Oktober and imprisoned in the Winter Palace, but when she was liberated by Russian Dawn the people of Latvia were forgiving and elevated her to national hero.

Since that brush with Oktober Zvaigzne Sieviete has proven herself to be an enthusiastic hero - even if she still has a lot to learn. She spends most of her time at the Winter Palace, working with the administrators; but also reserves a lot of her time for making public appearances in Riga.

Personality

Alise Baumanis always wanted to be a superstar. She lives the life of a superhero to the hilt, always appearing the public arena and making the most of every situation. She is, however, quite sincere in her duties as a hero and never gives up no matter what opposition she encounters. She has made it a point of honour to bring in her evil great uncle, and if it wasn't for her procrastinating ways she would have launched a one-girl crusade against the Professor months ago. She will get around to it, but there is only so much one super girl can do in a day.

Quote

"Oh wow! I didn't mean to do that... it just sort of... happened." (falling through the floor after triggering her density powers)

Powers

Zvaigzne Sieviete has the ability to alter her density which grants her uberhuman strength and durability. She has decided to make up for her great uncle's criminal deeds by countering his gadgets with her own. She has so far created (or copied) gadgets including a ray gun, a force field generator and an anti-grav belt.

Appearance

Zvaigzne Sieviete is larger than life. She has long black hair which has a perpetual swoosh, especially when she flies. She has a statuesque body with long legs and a tendency to fill out any costume with super-sexiness. Her skin is a dusky brown and she wears a bright red and white costume, the defining feature of which is a revealing triangle. She employs a fashion designer and has changed or altered her costume seven times in the past two years.

#94 VASILEVSKIS MARK II (Latvia)

vasilevskis2.jpg

VASILEVSKIS MARK II

Stanislavs Vasilevskis Mark II

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

The second Vasilevskis robot was created based on the first one's designs. It appeared to be a complete success, although the second one lacks the ability (or willingness) to experience emotions, and often appears deliberately obtuse when dealing with humans. Since his 'arrival' Stan-2 has been involved in a number of accidents, some of which his 'brother' thinks may have been deliberate.

It remains to be seen what Stan-2 will eventually get up to, but he has established communications with the Professor via an internet chat room. The relationship is only emerging, but Stan-2 has already indicated to the Professor that he considers the mad scientist to be his real father.

Personality

Stan-2 is considered arrogant by all who know him, although he is a robot and should not be able to possess such an outlook. He does not believe in the world philosophy of his older 'brother', and sees the inmates at the Winter Palace as being worthy of nothing. He is not very good at maintaining his concentration when he is supposed to be working, and this has caused some friction between Stan-2 and Balodis.

Quote

"It is not my concern. I have more important tasks to attend to."

Powers

Vasilevskis and his 'brother' are robots based on the designs of the original Stanislavs Vasilevskis and the criminal Professor. They possess an impressive database containing expansive knowledge in areas of science, humanities and philosophy. Their body is incredible strong and capable, includign a vast array of enhanced sensors and a self-healing capability.

Appearance

Stan-2 is obviously a robot, with a steel-plated face lined with blue panels. His 'hair' is synthetic and dark steel grey with a blue stripe. He wears casual clothing which helps him maintain an almost-human appearance, and favours a jacket, trousers and basketball shoes.

#94 VASILEVSKIS (Latvia)

vasilevskis.jpg

VASILEVSKIS

Stanislavs Vasilevskis

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Stanislavs Vasilevskis was once a criminal, or more correctly, the original Stanislavs Vasilevskis was a criminal. He worked for the Professor as a laboratory assistant until he was captured and sent to the Winter Palace in Latvia. He had created a robot duplicate of himself which was also 'confiscated' and sent to the Palace. While the original Vasilevskis died in custody, the result of a malignant cancer, his robot duplicate remained. The robot, who became known as Stanislavs Vasilevskis, began to assist with the daily organisation of the detention facility and was eventually considered part of the staff. He was never charged with a crime and after the Winter Palace was given a face-lift when it reverted back to Latvian control, Vasilevskis was actually put on as a paid employee.

The CEO of Bruninieks Ziemassvetki at the time was Igor Brivibai and he was considered a pioneer in human rights within the Baltic region, particularly after the Soviet occupation. He successfully convinced the Latvian government to grant Vasilevskis full civilian rights, after which the robot became a pseudo-super hero for the fledgling country.

Super-heroics weren't really his area of interest, however, and Vasilevskis preferred to remain in the Winter Palace, assisting with the monitoring and counselling of uberhuman criminals.

In 2002, Brivibai created a duplicate of Vasilevskis which was dubbed Vasilevskis Mark II. It was considered a success and Vasilevskis considers this Mark II as his 'little brother'. Shortly after, Brivibai was driven insane during a prison break-out and replaced by Dagnja Balodis. The actual cause of the breakout was never satisfactorily explained, although Vasilevskis suspects that his 'little brother' may have somehow been involved.

Personality

Vasilevskis, or 'Stan', is a robot with the capability to feel and experience emotions which makes him somewhat unique among other artificial lifeforms. Consequently he is considered a 'bleeding heart' and finds himself caught in powerful 'moods'. On more than one occasion he has fallen in love, most recently with Balodis, which has caused him no end of misery.

He is a model employee: working hard and always volunteering for extra work. He considers the Winter Palace to be his home and feels most comfortable there, although he has ventured out to Riga and other cities as a 'super-hero' when the need arises.

Quote

"Society has deemed you unfit to experience freedom without bounds, but within the Winter Palace you will discover that freedom comes in degrees. There is much to enjoy here, and from enjoyment and appreciation, you may regain the greater freedom you believe has been taken away. It is a process, and I am here to assist you along that process."

Powers

Vasilevskis and his 'brother' are robots based on the designs of the original Stanislavs Vasilevskis and the criminal Professor. They possess an impressive database containing expansive knowledge in areas of science, humanities and philosophy. Their body is incredible strong and capable, including a vast array of enhanced sensors and a self-healing capability.

Appearance

Stanislavs Vasilevskis is obviously a robot, with a steel-plated face lined with lime-green panels. His 'hair' is synthetic and dark steel grey with a red stripe. He wears casual clothing which helps him maintain an almost-human appearance, and favours a jacket, trousers and basketball shoes.

#94 BALODIS (Latvia)

balodis.jpg

BALODIS

Dagnja Balodis

Character Sheet (Click Here)

Background

Dagnja Balodis came to be in charge of the Winter Palace detention centre after working with the Russian government, particularly in the area of uberhuman affairs. Although she left her position in Russia before the official formation of Russian Dawn she was involved with some of the preliminary work in organising the superhero team. She returned to Latvia to take up the position of CEO for Bruninieks Ziemassvetki after the former CEO was driven insane after several uberhuman criminals escaped the facility.

Since her arrival there have been no more major breakouts, although the Winter Palace is still considered secondary to the major international uberhuman correctional and detention facilities. The Palace only deals with lower level uberhumans.

Balodis has developed an impressive CV beginning as a costumed superhero, the Blue Fairy, in the late 1970s when she worked against the Soviet Union as a hero for democracy. Her career was short-lived and although she was never captured by the communists she was forced into hiding in the United Kingdom where her career gradually faded away. During the 1980s she began to work with Dr Saul Numen and was working with him when he established the Numen-Kami Institute. It was during this time that Balodis began to take a more active interest in uberhuman physiology and psychology, something which led her to investigate the ways uberhuman powers could be negated or neutralised.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain Balodis travelled to Russia as part of a Numen-Kami Institute delegation, and while there she was convinced by the new government to stay on board and assist with the uberhuman issues within Russia.

Personality

Balodis is a woman who works within guidelines. She never breaks the rules and looks poorly on those who do. She has a history of condemning vigilante actions and has worked closely with the Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian governments in looking at ways to curb vigilante activities. With that in mind, she is also a proud supporter of democracy. In her time as the Blue Fairy she wantonly broke the rules and opposed the Soviet Union. If this is brought up she quickly dismisses it, explaining that the world was a very different one to the one she lives in now. She does not see the actions of vigilantes as justifiable - just selfish actions of anarchists.

Quote

"This place could certainly use a little magic touch..."

Powers

As the Blue Fairy, Balodis had access to a modest number of magic effects. The exact nature of her magic abilities was never disclosed, although she has alluded to her grandmother being a 'real' fairy. Her magic powers have diminished to such a point that she is only able to levitate and hover in the air. She also possesses an inordinate amount of natural luck and is one of the most stubborn women you will ever meet.

Appearance

Dagnja Balodis is a very industrious and efficient woman in her late forties. She dresses conservatively and appears severe to those who don't know her. Her hair is silver and she wears pointed spectacles which somewhat cloud her otherwise sparkly blue eyes. She tends to wear in all shades of blue - something which began during her time as the Blue Fairy.

Re: Around the World With A New Character Each Week

The next character will be based in Lebanon (and probably an uberhuman member of Hezbollah), but I'm also running a side-project for characters coming from fictitious places around Uberworld.

There's a poll currently up on the blog where you can help decide if the character from Azambia is a hero, villain or whatever. Azambia is an African country ruled by the Uberworld's version of Doctor Doom. Check it out if you have time and please cast a vote. It's my first blog-poll.

:D
