Re: Around the World With A New Character Each Week

Does Bounty only take trophies from super _heroes_?

Bounty would take trophies from any of his targets, whether they be super heroes, villains, nuns or teachers.

Are you going to help me out with a backstory for one of his trophies? That'd be sweet!

I like the concept for "Gas Girl". But the name ? Maybe it sounds better in French or one of the other languages of the CAE !

Yeah I agree. I was pressed for time, but am happy to retcon it. :D

I'll try a few variants over the next few days.

Re: Around the World With A New Character Each Week

Here's my submission (might be a bit long)

Flagg – a Totemic metamorph, Joseph McKale had the power to manifest the ideals of visual symbols that he wore or carried; as his name implies, Joe got the most mileage out of national and state flags, due to their highly visible, yet very specific, meaning. Joe was based out of Vancouver, BC; the triads found him irritating, as “Strong and Free” (Alberta) and “One Defends, the Other Conquers” (Nova Scotia) were powerful ideals in his war on crime. Bounty was able to defeat him by tricking him into manifesting using the United States flag: “In God we Trust,” and “Out of many, one”. While useful in defending against supernatural threats and polymorphs, it was of limited value against a speedster.

Bounty wears the banner that defeated Flagg as a trophy.

EDIT - and may I say, the list of state mottos on Wikipedia is a kick-arse list of superpowers. I think I may write this character up...

Re: Around the World With A New Character Each Week

The Creature: was actually Arvin Hasselbladt, a b-movie writer/producer/director who manage to get his hands on a strength assisting exoskeleton being sold at the auction of a deceased inventor's estate and created a reptilian monster costume to wear over it with the intention of using it to make cheezy horror movies. His publicity stunts wearing the costume quickly escalated into a whole career of fighting crime (and certain heros who were inclined to judge a book by it's cover.). The Creature was hunted down and killed by Bounty for an extremely wealthy music producer with a taste for illegal thrills who believed (correctly) that The Creature was out to get him.

#34 IZHAAM (Chad)

izhaam.jpg

IZHAAM

Wasimah Kebzabo

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

No one knows where Wasimah Kebzabo discovered the remains of an unknown superhero who valiantly, although futilely, stood up against the combined forces of the Sons of Set when they invaded Chad in 2002, but since finding them she has become the sole voice of protest against her country's capitulation to the shadowy controllers from Cairo. Although the world admits that Chad is now less volatile and overall more civilised, Wasimah Kebzabo and others like her see this mirage of peace as being a slow death for her country.

Wielding the thigh bone of the Unknown Hero she has led several strikes against Egyptian contract workers and buildings known to house those loyal to the Sons of Set. She is seen as a lunatic by the Chad government and they have tried on many occasions to have her institutionalised, and on some occasions even to have her killed, but she manages to live on.

The Sons of Set haven't bothered to eradicate her as they see her as a nuisance and have more interesting opponents in other countries.

Taking the name Izhaam, Wasimah Kebzabo has begun to see herself as the Chosen One who will lead the Arabic people of Chad into a brighter future. She wields the bones of the Fallen Hero like a berserker, unsure of their full power but believing that they allow her a passage to greater glory and power. She has increased her activity against the Egyptians in recent months and has even managed to surprise her enemies, allowing her frequent victories.

Although she has no formal contact with ubers outside of Chad, there are some who view her as a means to destabilise Chad's alliance with the Sons of Set. The Witch Doctor of Azambia has begun to make moves to enlist her into his own cause, but she is not aware of this at the moment.

Personality

Izhaam, which means bone in Arabic, is a slightly crazy woman who has transformed herself from petty fortune teller and sometime cattle herder, into a modern day messiah for the Arab people. She is vindictive and prejudiced against the Christians and the traitors who have sided with Egypt, and can be seen more as a vigilante in people's eyes than a hero.

She wants to drive the false people out of Chad and does so by brandishing the sun-cooked bones of an unknown hero.

Quote

"Scatter like flies upon the rotting corpse of our corrupted government!"

Powers

Wasimah Kebzabo is a regular woman in her fifties who came across the corpse of an unknown uberhuman whose bones still possessed unusual abilities, and bestowed those abilities on the person who touched them. As Izhaam, she possesses uberhuman strength, durability and regenerative powers. She also has a habit of swinging the thigh bone of the hero as a weapon which is capable of dealing considerable damage.

Appearance

Wasimah Kebzabo has not led a good life. Her face is weathered and her mismatched eyes give her an unsettling, ugly demeanor. Since discovering the bones which have granted her powers, she has worn little clothing believing that she is beyond that now. She wears the bones around her body which are joined together with a dirty white robe. She has been campaigning as Izhaam for a little over a year now and has truly lost much connection with reality.

Notes

One of the plans for 2007 is to write a series of fiction pieces featuring a war in Africa between the forces of the Sons of Set and the forces who rally behind Africa Force and the Witch Doctor. I figure it will be a bloody war and characters may find themselves facing death or making difficult choices as to alliances.

But it will be 2007 before anything happens.

#35 JUNTA (Chile)

juntalogo.jpg

JUNTA

Team Page (HTM)

Background

Uberhumans entered the world stage during the closing stages of the Second World War, and since that time there have been various explanations for this emergence. Some believe that ubers have always been around, although they have fitted more closely with society than they do in present times. Others believe that uberhumans signal the next stage in the evolutionary path.

Cristian Enrique Palma grew up as a second generation uber. He viewed ubers as being above the everyday people and when he graduated military school he decided that his calling would be to bring about a revolution so that uberhumans could overthrow human governments and establish themselves as the rightful rulers of the planet. He even fantasised about ubers taking over the universe, using Earth as the first step to greater things.

As Tupungato he caused civil unrest in Chile, resulting in widespread riots and an eventual collapse of the government. However, the Chileans voted in the next election and brought back democracy, leaving Tupungato without his dream fulfilled. He turned elsewhere, calling out to ubers across the world to unite against humans.

Some heeded his call while others secretly wished to do so. Governments across the world reacted to Junta's cries for revolution as they had to the Russian and French and American revolutions of the past. They were fearful.

So far Junta have managed to cause a lot of unrest across South America, and the idea that ubers should rise up and take control of government has entrenched itself in fanatics across the globe.

Area of Operations

Junta is based in Chile and has moved against many governments of South America. Although their influence has reached across the globe, the members of Junta have yet to operate beyond South America, although that could change at any moment.

Tupungato is a member of S.U.M.M.I.T. and has operated in Europe and some Asian countries, although he does so as a member of that organisation, quite separate from Junta.

Goals

Junta is attempting to bring about a revolution where uberhumans will overthrow their 'human' governments and establish themselves as the rightful rulers of the planet. Junta hopes to be at the forefront of this revolution so it can reap the rewards.

Reputation

Junta is known across the world, although more so for its political beliefs than its effectiveness in bringing them about. It is viewed as a dangerous organisation by governments, although to some ubers it represents a dream. Many young ubers hope to join Junta and its membership is sure to increase. Tupungato has a strict military outlook and requires members of Junta to be physically strong and disciplined, attributes which further reinforce Junta's image as a powerful threat to the status quo.

#35 LA ESPADA (Chile)

espada.jpg

LA ESPADA

Maria Mariscal Cortez

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

La Espada means sword and Maria Mariscal Cortez earned the name after killing a telepath employed by the mercenary group Deep Six. Maria had been hired by a Chilean politician to retrieve a family heirloom from a warehouse where it had been taken to sell by thieves. Maria was a private investigator and needed the money but when she discovered the blood-red amulet she was sent to retrieve amplified her nascent telepathic powers she was momentarily overcome with a sense of power. She could hear the thoughts of those around her, even though they didn't know she was there. For years Maria had known about her telepathy but it had only ever been useful in short bursts.

With the amulet in her hands, everything seemed to be open.

And that is when the telepath, Psyriana, arrived. Maria's immediate reaction was to hoard the amulet. Psyriana hadn't been expecting resistance and after disabling the guards in the warehouse she figured it was an easy assignment. But then she came against Maria and realised that the amulet was indeed very powerful. Even though she was a hardened psychic, Psyriana found that her defences were being peeled away by Maria's angry mind.

Psyriana attempted to kill Maria but her assaults were rebuked.

When Deep Six came to look for their telepath they found her comatose on the floor, the amulet nowhere in sight. Doctors couldn't revive Psyriana and her mind had effectively been carved up inside her skull. When Treasure discovered that Maria was responsible, after interrogating Maria's employers, the full resources of Deep Six were dispatched to take her down.

Maria was still drunk with her new power when they arrived in her Santiago apartment.

Treasure never knocked.

The door exploded inwards, but Maria had already known they were there. She had slipped into the apartment upstairs and began to kill the soldiers who were ransacking her home. They began falling, clutching their heads, and then Maria found Treasure's mind and did some awful damage.

Treasure has never forgiven Maria and still vows to cleave the woman's head from her shoulders.

Maria never looked back.

She continued working as a private investigator, only now she became more successful as well as more curious. She couldn't help but delve into the minds of people around her and she uncovered elaborate secrets which she subsequently used to blackmail all sorts of people. She dabbled in crime but it was too easy. When Junta advertised their vision for an uber-dominated future, Maria felt a new calling.

Still feeling inadequate because her powers needed the amulet to be effective, Maria decided that she needed to align herself with power and influence. She joined Junta and has made herself indispensable. Her private goal is to destroy other mentalists so that they will never threaten her position in Junta and the future they will rule.

Personality

Maria is a telepathic junkie, needing the rush of peeping into other people's minds in order to feel anything. Her reliance on the amulet feeds this sense of power while also feeding her paranoia that she will be replaced as THE mentalist in Junta. Although she is not particularly liked by the other members of Junta she is grudgingly accepted because of her skills.

Maria continues to work as a private investigator, but does so mostly to seek out secrets which she can then use to manipulate and bully others. She enjoys feeling superior to other people and has used her powers quite ruthlessly in pursuit of this.

Quote

"Naughty, naughty... I hope your friends know you dream about them like that!"

Powers

La Espada is an uberhuman telepath, although her natural abilities are rather low level, apart from her 'telepathic alarm bells' which have always alerted her to danger. Since acquiring the amulet, whose origin is still unknown, her telepathic powers have been amplified to quite significant levels. What makes her telepathy more effective than others of her level, is her ability to peel away defences. It is an effect of the mystical nature of her powers that mental defences in opponents don't seem to be as effective against her.

Appearance

La Espada is an attractive woman in her early thirties, with curly brown hair which falls to her shoulders. She always wears her amulet at the base of her throat, and its size and colour demands attention. The gem itself is the size of an American silver dollar and is set in dark gold. As a private investigator she usually wears slacks and a shirt, but when not working she almost always wears dresses and skirts.

The Junta Uniform is a dark green with gold piping. La Espada has had her uniform reinforced with bullet-proof material.

#35 JINX (Chile)

jinx.jpg

JINX

Jinx Varela

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Jinx grew up a fighter.

She was beaten as a baby and it didn't stop until she started to fight back at the age of six. Things didn't seem to go her way for another couple of years but then one day she managed to slam her father out of the third-storey window and watched with detachment as he shattered on the pavement below. With her father's death she thought things might improve, but it wasn't long before she was balling up her fists again.

Jinx Varela hasn't stopped fighting and has an extensive criminal record, having spent close to six years behind bars.

During one stint in prison, she discovered that she was composed of organic sand. It wasn't exactly her wish-come-true, but it did allow her to avoid being crushed to death as the prison was being destroyed by giant robots unleashed by a mad scientist who happened to be incarcerated along with Jinx. She reformed on the other side of the massive concrete slab which should have crushed her, and wandered into freedom. Fate seemed to have brought her together with the mad scientist and she spent some time with him on the outside, assisting him with plans of world domination. After a while, though, Jinx became bored with laboratories and clandestine scientific activity.

She left him.

But just as she never seemed able to stay away from fist-fighting, Jinx also never quite managed to be rid of the wrong type of man. She fell in with Cristian Palma, known as Tupungato, who was attempting to bring about a revolution. Jinx didn't immediately believe his rhetoric about uberhumans inheriting the earth. She was still trying to get used to the fact that her body was able to shift so easily from one form to another. However, after joining Junta and seeing the fear in the eyes of those they dominated, Jinx began to believe that perhaps they were destined for greater things.

Although she hasn't stopped fighting, Jinx has begun to fight for something rather than as a daily exercise.

Personality

Jinx has had a hard life and it shows in her bitter and sarcastic conversations. She has been affected by prison life and the life of poverty and abuse. She looks at the world with a mixture of anger and fear, and as a result has become something of a bully - relishing the opportunities to inflict the same pain and fear that she feels has been levelled at her her entire life.

She has joined Junta because she feels that Cristian's vision actually justifies her need for dominating the weaker people. She can now securely justify anything she does because she has been told she will inherit the earth.

Quote

"You're my b**** now, cop."

Powers

Jinx has developed a fast and deadly fighting style through her early years and is a formidable opponent. However, she has also recently learned that she is an uberhuman and is able to transform into an organic sand which allows her to bolster her strength to uberhuman levels, disperse herself through the smallest of cracks, and project deadly and blinding blasts of sand.

Appearance

Jinx is tall and muscular, with dark skin and darker eyes. Her hair is short and has shaved patterns along each side, giving her an intimidating appearance. She has various prison tattoos visible on her arms, neck and torso. When she shifts into her sand form her skin and clothes are replaced with organic and malleable sand particles. They are a dark sand colour and are constantly moving. Even in her regular form, Jinx is constantly leaving traces of sand behind but she manages to regenerate the mass instantly, almost as if she is feeding from the earth itself. Water is her enemy, however, and when immersed in the substance she loses her sand powers.

The Junta Uniform is a dark green with gold piping.

#35 PERRO NINO (Chile)

perronino.jpg

PERRO NINO

Axel Valcarce

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

After being abandoned by his parents, Axel found himself accepted into a pack of wild dogs near Talcahuano and spent the next few years scavenging through rubbish to find enough food to eat. When he was discovered by humans again he was quickly dubbed the Dog Boy and found himself thrust into the media frenzy which ensued. Interest in him spread across the globe and brought all kinds of experts to Chile. Axel spent a long time being examined by one expert after another, and he even managed to escape several times, although he was always recaptured. One time he even attempted to swim away into the Pacific Ocean.

The authorities tried to set Axel up with a foster home as he grew older but all attempts failed. Axel was either not accepted or else he found ways to make the families change their minds.

And then Dr Joseph Mengele became involved, sending his young uberhuman charges to kidnap the Dog Boy. Back in his Argentinean compound Mengele began to experiment on Axel, traumatising the boy with torture and combat training against the older children. Mengele was pleased with the results and Axel soon became one of his Kinder Der Zukunft.

S.A.G.E., in turn, managed to kidnap Axel away from Mengele, and returned him to Chile where he was again accepted into the care of the government. While S.A.G.E. kept an eye on the boy for several months they soon found themselves draw away into other emergencies.

In 2006, the fifteen year old Axel found himself drawn to the rhetoric of Junta who were continuing to devastate the Chilean capital with military strikes to destabilise the government. Although he couldn't read, Axel found himself mesmerised by the television and when Tupungato called for all interested ubers to congregate at Tupungato mountain the following week, Axel escaped from foster care and travelled the perilous journey with hope in his heart.

Tupungato knew that by advertising the meeting point he would draw out the authorities.

When Axel and the other hopeful ubers arrived, Junta was set upon by the Southern Knights, members of Sanctity and various independent South America superheroes. Junta was ready for them, and launched their own attack, ambushing the heroes. Tupungato had replaced himself and the other members of Junta with actors and managed to outflank the heroes. With the assistance of Gauntlet, Junta was victorious and managed to send the heroes packing, while also recruiting several important ubers, including young Axel.

Axel was impressed with the military tactics of Tupungato and has since regarded him as the Alpha Male whose orders and wishes are to be obeyed without question.

Personality

Axel has been raised by wild dogs and still has a pack mentality, believing that Tupungato demands respect and loyalty because of his power and intelligence. He embodies loyalty but is not savage, unlike stories which have created his reputation as a monster. Although Tupungato has tried to manipulate Axel into a more bloodthirsty addition to his team, Axel still maintains his humanity and is perhaps the least likely to kill of the team.

He is also the youngest and most impressionable.

Quote

[low growl coming from the back of his throat...]

Powers

Axel is an uberhuman who has been exposed to an unusual upbringing. It is theorised that his ubergene only activated in response to his surroundings so that he has exhibited dog-like and survival abilities. His time with Mengele has heightened those abilities as well as allowing him to become more proficient with hand to hand combat. As Perro Nino, he serves Junta as a tracker and sentry.

Appearance

Axel is a wiry young man with wild brown eyes and tussled brown hair. His face is always clean shaven, and his skin is smooth and olive. His upbringing has made him prone to fight or flight tendencies so he always stands on the balls of his feet and is extremely agile and graceful. Even after living amongst humans for years Axel prefers to be alone and cares little for clothing apart from the barest of clothes to hide his privates. He has recently become a little shy amongst women, although this shyness can give way quickly to bestial urges (something he is increasingly embarrassed about).

The Junta Uniform is a dark green with gold piping.

Notes

Axel Rivas really was a boy who was raised by wild dogs in Chile. Although this version is a fictionalised one.

#35 TORMENTA (Chile)

tormenta.jpg

TORMENTA

Honoratas Ruiz

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Honoratas was raised in a Catholic school and never discovered that she was descended from the Araucanian Indians until she was seventeen. Her mother's family wanted her to forget about the past as they had done, but Honoratas pursued her lost culture, abandoning any interest in university. She disappeared from La Serena and spent a long time finding herself, forging links with the Araucanians, although she had to fight hard for them to accept her. During this time she began experimenting with hallucinogens and other drugs, aligning herself with a particularly militant band of independence rights activists. The drugs and the fevered company managed to unlock Honoratas' ubergene resulting in the mother of all storms which raged for days along the coast of Chile.

She saw the lightning as a sign from the gods, particularly Pillan the God of Thunder and Death. The group gathered around her and she had her first sense of power. As she looked at the other activists she saw at once that they worshipped her and that they were not worthy of her presence. She played the Goddess for a while but grew bored with their pandering.

She set off for Santiago where she challenged Tupungato who was also causing a stir amongst Chilean ubers. After a cataclysmic battle Honoratas accepted Tupungato's leadership and they joined forces. She was the first recruit for his Junta and has remained loyal to him ever since, although she has her own goals, of which Tupungato is well aware and accepting.

Personality

Tormenta is proud of her Araucanian heritage and her uberhuman powers which set her apart from the world she once lived in. She feels as if everything around her is within her grasp. If she wants something she takes it, never thinking about consequences because she is supremely confident in her ability to protect herself and blast away any resistance. This godlike confidence includes dominion over all objects, from art and money through to people. She believes that she deserves worship and sometimes encourages it by appearing in communities and demonstrating her godlike powers.

Quote

"The power of the gods courses through my veins."

Powers

Tormenta has become an elemental being: her body has absorbed so much electricity that it is now a natural part of her body. She is able to release this electricity in a variety of offensive forms such as blasts from her fingertips, eyes and even from the air around her. She has the ability to charge up areas with static electricity or take such energy away, rendering electronic equipment useless. By harnessing the electricity she is able to generate a field which surrounds and protects her, as well as enabling her to fly. Her eyes have also changed allowing her to sense electricity in the immediate area as well as protecting her from flares.

Appearance

Tormenta is a confident woman of an otherwise unremarkable form. She keeps her hair tied back when in her civilian role as an electrician, but when she allows herself to take on her godlike form, she allows it to fall free to her shoulders. When her powers manifest her eyes glow white and blue with charges of electricity skittering across their surface.

The Junta Uniform is a dark green with gold piping.

Notes

Tormenta is the Spanish word for 'Storm'. See any similarities?

#35 TUPUNGATO (Chile)

tupungato2.jpg

TUPUNGATO

Cristian Enrique Palma

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Junta.

It meant military rule by force, and Cristian Enrique Palma envisioned himself leading such a militaristic uberhuman junta against the governments of the world. Since he was able to read, Cristian would digest thick volumes of military history, particularly in South American history. He contacted many of those involved in the Pinochet regime from the 1980s to the 1990s. He investigated the Caravans of Death and the covert assassin organisations which thrived during this period. His father, the original Tupungato, was also a member of an uberhuman criminal syndicate which operated worldwide. Cristian tried to discover as much as he could about these other ubers.

During his secondary schooling at a military school, Cristian decided on his plan to be at the forefront of an uberhuman revolution. He would need to emulate previous successful military campaigns such as the Nazis, the Pinochet coup and even the Americans. He was fixated with a militaristic style, a uniform which would embolden its wearer while intimidating its opponent.

Over the next few years Cristian finalised his vision and marked his graduation from school with a destructive move against the Chilean government. He took on his father's name, Tupungato, which was the name of an imposing mountain. His father had semi-retired and lived mostly in Europe, so Cristian assumed he would be proud of his son's move to take over the legacy.

He was wrong.

The elder Tupungato was enraged that his son would show such supremacist views and destroy major tracts of Santiago. While Cristian took great joy in tossing tanks through the walls of banks, his father's heart shrank. After the uprising, which led to weeks of riots and a destabilisation of the Chilean government, Cristian found himself cut off from his father.

The isolation only fuelled his need to make his father proud.

He attacked two other cities in successive weeks and drew to him more uberhumans who shared his vision. Together with Gauntlet, they moved their attacks across to Brazil and lay siege to Brasilia for two weeks, sending that country into months of disorientation and confusion.

News of Tupungato and his Junta spread across the world. Uberhumans were either inspired by his words of a great future for their kind, or a little frightened. The general public viewed Junta as a major threat, and there was even some talk of uberhuman registration in some countries. This news bolstered Cristian's support in Chile amongst the uberhumans, and although he has not succeeded in taking over the government (something he doesn't actually want to do because the responsibility would be too detrimental to his bigger campaign), Junta has been successful in keeping Chile's government fractured. There have been frequent riots and attempted coups in the past five years, testament, Cristian believes, to his initial work.

Personality

Cristian was born into a privileged family in Santiago, being the only son of the wealthy criminal Tupungato, who was also one of the founding members of the organisation which is now known as S.U.M.M.I.T.. He knew from an early age that he was an uberhuman and since his parents were both ubers as well he began to look down on those without such gifts, including his two sisters. His supremacist views embarrassed his father who has since cut ties with his son, apart from brief meetings within S.U.M.M.I.T. where Cristian is an associate member. Cristian publicly views his father's rejection as a weakness but inwardly feels the pain growing as each day passes.

Cristian organised Junta to ensure he was at the forefront of any uberhuman revolution against the masses. He has had some interaction with the Kinder der Zukunft and Dr Mengele, but has since cooled ties with the Nazi-based organisation. He has also made connections with Gauntlet and Professor Quake.

Quote

"This world is nothing but the cradle of the genetic elite who will one day rise beyond our skies and dominate the very universe."

Powers

Tupungato is one of the strongest and most durable ubers in the world, able to lift in excess of 200 tons. He is fond of tossing battle tanks around in front of the media and there have been several iconic photographs of him doing so. Beyond his incredible strength and his near-invulnerability, Tupungato is also a staunch uber supremacist, his beliefs fuelling the Junta's progress.

One weakness in Tupungato's powers is his reliance of a connection with the earth. In the past his powers have diminished when he was dropped in the ocean, as well as a memorable battle on board a space station. Since learning of his limitations, Tupungato rarely leaves the ground and only does so with significant support.

Appearance

An imposing man in his mid-twenties, Tupungato is a second-generation uber who has been blessed with confidence and a regal bearing. He is very tall and has a chiseled physique including defined cheekbones (one of his trademarks). He has short black hair cut close to his skull and dark brown eyes which reflect intelligence and a strategic mind (although, as some have commented, Cristian's intelligence falls far below that of his father, the original Tupungato).

The Junta Uniform is a dark green with gold piping.

Notes

Tupungato is the first member I've written up for S.U.M.M.I.T. which first appeared in Starta's entry back when I wrote up Andorra. In fact, Strata and Tupungato are the next generation for S.U.M.M.I.T. - their father's are members (or were).

#36 RONG YU JING WEI (China)

rongyu.jpg

RONG YU JING WEI

Various

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The Chinese government has long had a tradition of using uberhumans for the good of the State. The Immortals team represents their public face and since its reformation has been very media-friendly and widely recognisable across China and the world. The high incidence of uberhumans in China, due mostly to its very large population base, has allowed China to become one of the super-powers of the uber world. It has created a very large group of ubers known as the Rong Yu Jing Wei, or Honor Guard. While the majority of these ubers are relatively low powered, their abilities are bolstered by high tech armour and martial arts training.

The Rong Yu Jing Wei serve as a constant reminder to the world of China's power. They serve as security at all of China's embassies as well as bodyguards for all important members of the Chinese government. There are literally hundreds of Rong Yu Jing Wei. It is rumored that the Chinese government has also established the Honor Guard to act as a first response in any military action, effectively creating an uberhuman army - something no other country in the world has been able to do with any effectiveness.

Personality

The young ubers who take on the role of Rong Yu Jing Wei are predominantly male, with female agents often used exclusively behind the scenes in the capital. The Rong Yu Jing Wei are silent and loyal, and have undergone extensive training and conditioning.

Quote

"This area is restricted."

Powers

The uberhumans who become Rong Yu Jing Wei are low levelled but still effective individuals. Mostly they are categorised (by Western countries) as: Aquatics (able to operate underwater), Bricks (super strength), Energy Blasters (able to project energy of various types), Mentalists (low level telepaths), Multi-Armed agents (with usually four arms, sometimes more), Speedsters (super speed), Telekinetics (low level telekinesis) and Wraiths (able to turn invisible and move through solid objects).

In addition to their uberhuman powers, Rong Yu Jing Wei are outfitted with specialist armor which provides them with superior defences, concussive force blasts from specially designed gauntlets, jet boots enabling flight and a helmet with a wide array of sensors.

Appearance

The Rong Yu Jing Wei are designed to look alike, replacing individuality with uniform. They wear a dark red hard armor which covers their entire body except for the lower part of their faces, exposing their mouths and chin. They carry no obvious weapons (unless they have activated their blasters), but it is widely known that they are living weapons and so their reputation enables them to serve very effectively as security for the Chinese government.

Notes

Sorry for the long hiatus. I had planned to continue the blog while I was overseas but it just never seemed to work out. Too busy sightseeing.

Sofia Gardeazabal went to college with Samantha Numen of the New Men and the two became room mates in their second year, although it took them a few months to become friends after some initial clashes of personality. Both girls were headstrong and curious, with Samantha pursuing public relations and Sofia studying journalism. Their friendship survived several attempts by Maximum Force to destroy the residence building, a simultaneous, yet embarrassing in hindsight, infatuation with a college professor and a vacation into outer space.

After graduation, Sofia invited Samantha to stay with her family in Colombia and it was during this visit that an ancient Muzos protector spirit was released from thousands of years of captivity. The spirit was attracted to Sofia and merged with her which led to a severe personality shift, transforming Sofia from a young, fun-loving graduate into an egotistic, power-mad godling. Sofia had no control over her transformation and was lost for several weeks while the New Men battled to free her and several other young Colombian who were similarly transformed by the Muzos spirits.

Samantha returned to the New Men and Sofia tried to settle back into life in Bogota, although she realised that her country was as over run with crime and corruption as it had been before she left for America. She found a job with a government newspaper and settled down as much as she could, although her dreams were frequently over-run by memories of her time under the influence of the Muzos spirit.

The next time Samantha Numen arrived to visit, Sofia found herself kidnapped by anti-government militia. She was taken to a mine in the south-west where she discovered that the militia were being sponsored by a European criminal cartel led by Midas, a gold-skinned conman and uberhuman. While Sofia waited (patiently) for Samantha to rescue her (again), she began to look around the mine complex and even managed to evade her captors to get a better look at the deeper sections.

It was during this exploration that she stumbled across a mystical emerald which had been buried thousands of years before by the Muzos people of Central America. Sofia felt drawn to the powerful stone and as she touched it the stone felt the remnants of the Muzos spirit which had once over-run Sofia's body. The connection triggered another transformation, but this time, Sofia felt herself welcome the energy. Her mind seemed to expand, her thoughts became sharper and faster.

The powers of the emerald were transferred to her and, as well as an increased intellect, Sofia also found herself with green skin backed up with uberhuman strength and durability. If she hadn't been close friends with Samantha Numen, Sofia would have been horrified, but seeing the New Men up close and personal had enabled her to accustom herself to super beings. She embraced the change, assuming it would be fleeting, and headed back towards Midas and his henchmen.

Samantha had arrived as well and the two friends succeeded in defeating Midas and routing the militia.

However, the transformation never reversed itself and Sofia found herself green for a very long time. The emerald had unlocked her intellectual potential as well as preparing her for the study of magic. At first she was reluctant, but after being approached by Witch Hazel of the Southern Knights, Sofia began to train in magic, serving under a sorceress from Chile who gained her power through gem stones. The Sorceress unlocked Sofia's energy and within months Sofia had become proficient in magic, although her spells were tied to the magical properties of emeralds.

With the support of the New Men, Sofia took on the name of Viridian and returned to Bogota where she set herself up as a protector of the people. She had her work cut out for her and found that she needed the help of the New Men and the Southern Knights, especially against the drug cartels and FARC. As the years progressed she became more confident, and well known.

Her recent adventures have pitted her against the eco-terrorists The Elementals, especially the strong-armed Diamond Crusader. The two gem-themed heroines have clashed on several occasions, although there has been no clear winner. Viridian has managed to curb some of the violence in Bogota and surrounding areas, although Colombia remains one of the most dangerous and violent countries in the world.

Personality

Sofia is an optimist with a curiosity only matched by her charity. She always smiles and has a clear vision of the future which involves a stable government, the absence of drugs and an appreciation for fine clothing. She is in her late twenties and has been a costumed adventurer for nearly six years, the experience of which has made her confident when dealing with the weird and unnatural. She has to rely a lot on herself in Colombia as the government is unreliable and friends are few and far between.

Quote

"Never have I been surprised by the goodness of people; it is the badness that takes some getting used to."

Powers

Viridian has been endowed with magical abilities by an ancient Muzos emerald, including resistance to injury and uberhuman strength, an extended life span and the ability to survive in hostile environments. In addition to this she is also incredibly intelligent: her natural intellect having been heightened by the gemstone. She is fast and a capable fighter, her resistance also complemented with a regeneration factor.

After her initial transformation, which also turned her skin green, Viridian studied magic and is able to create several magical effects - all of which are associated with the traditional magical qualities of emeralds. She is able to detect lost things, ranging from personal effects to people themselves; she is able to fly and project beams of green energy which resound with devastating force; she is able to boost her resistance to injury; see the future; and delay the effects of storms.

Appearance

Viridian is an attractive woman with green skin and hair, although she is well known enough now that it has lost most of its surprise factor. She wears her hair to shoulder-length. She has gone through several costume changes, and her latest includes white gloves, shirt and mask, a dark green vest and skirt. Viridian has always maintained a skirt or dress and has been alternately criticized and lauded by uberhuman fashion-observers across the globe for going against the trend.

Notes

Check out FARC via Google or whatever. They would make a very good opponent for any Champions game.

Oh yeah, and Mystic characters are difficult to create without going for the spell-caster types.

And finally, I used to play a character called the Green Hammer who was a Green Lantern knock-off (very obvious). He lost his hammer and the shards entered his body energizing him so he could have the powers without the Focus. He changed his name to Viridian. Thought I'd hook up with that past character who was around in the 1980s - 1989 I think.

#38 JACK FROST (Comoros)

jackfrost.JPG

JACK FROST

Kelvin Jackson

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

I've taken some liberties with this character, making him born of a Comoron father and an American mother, living in Canada. Since his father is an illegal immigrant his own citizenship is in question. He is currently located in Argus City, USA which is the base for my Teen Champions game, Argus City (see Uberworld page for more details).

Kelvin and his family moved to Argus City to start a new life. His father had been sent to prison for manslaughter after being held responsible for the deaths of seven co-workers after a computer malfunctioned. His father was an engineer from Comoros and his visa papers were discovered to be counterfeit. The judge decided to make an example of him and he went to prison in Vancouver. Kelvin and his mother, who was born in the USA, were left with no income and no family support and so she took the hard decision to leave Canada. Kelvin later discovered that his father had been having an affair which shook his faith in his father and in his studies of Islam. While his mother was relatively active in Islam, it was his father who had been Kelvin's role model.

They arrived in Argus City and moved in with Kelvin's aunt, Lydia Montgomery. It was during these first few weeks that Kelvin discovered that he was undergoing more than just psychological and geographical changes. His skin became extremely cold and he sometimes woke up in the morning with his room covered in ice. Somehow he managed to hide this from his mother and aunt, but then Argus City experienced its worst Winter ever and Kelvin had the feeling it was because of him.

When he generated a snowstorm in the living room of his aunt's house he was sure he was a freak.

It was lucky that Mother Goose arrived to take him under her wing. He knew that his mom would be upset if she realised that it wasn't just his father who was a failure, but Kelvin too. And so Kelvin left with the strange woman who named him Jack Frost and whisked him away to the magical place she called Fairy Land.

Personality

Kelvin Jackson is a fourteen year old kid who has recently lost his father and had to move across a continent to a new city. He believed in Mohammed and Islam but this too has been shaken. The only hope he has left is that Mother Goose can keep away the bad things and that he can keep his secret from his mother.

He is on a path to trouble and if Mother Goose has any say in it, Kelvin will become a seasoned criminal by the time he reaches his next birthday.

Quote

"This kinda stuff is only supposed to happen in comic books!"

Powers

Jack Frost is able to generate a field of cold around his body which most regularly translates into severe drops in temperature, wild but localised snow storms and an impressive blast of cold air which is able to freeze almost anything temporarily. He is also completely invisible to sensors using infrared technology.

Appearance

Kelvin is a slightly chubby fourteen year old who wears a grey fur-lined jacket, dark grey gloves and beanie. He wears glasses to help him see and is useless without them. Under his coat he wears regular clothes. Kelvin's father is from Comoros in Africa and his mother is an African American from Pittsburgh.

#39 INFINITY (Congo)

infinity.jpg

INFINITY

Dr Paul Baptiste Tabizi

Character Sheet (HTM)

Note: Infinity is a Bronze Age / Iron Age character

Background

Tabizi was the greatest scientist of the Congo, a child prodigy who excelled first in his home country and then in France, going on to work alongside the famous Dr Numen and Dr Kami in their research into the ubergene. Although he had no real interest in ubergetics, Dr Tabizi provided the newly formed Numen-Kami Institute with great knowledge in chemistry, as well as connections to the academia in central Africa. The Institute had targeted research in Africa to study the effects of poverty and famine in the reduced incidence of ubers, and Tabizi was asked to provide leadership at the forefront of this new branch. He agreed but believed that the research could benefit his government and its Marxist philosophy: with greater knowledge of ubers within the Congo it was reasoned that these citizens could be harnessed to provide more economic and humanitarian assistance to the country.

Tabizi used the preliminary findings to identify Congolese ubers which included himself. He was fired up with enthusiasm at the discovery and conducted a series of brave and dangerous experiments on himself in a bid to activate his dormant ubergene. In retrospect the experiments should have killed him, but instead they eventually did activate his ubergene, granting him control over the cellular structure of the world around him.

The Numen-Kami Institute had no option but to expel him after learning that he had used the Institute to help his government identify uberhumans. Tabizi was not offended, and as he developed his powers he went on to assist the New Men with many adventures during the 1980s. During his early years as a hero, Tabizi was approached by Maximum Force who opposed the Numen-Kami Institute, and offered a place on the team. Tabizi refused and single-handedly held the team of villains from destroying Brazzaville.

As Infinity, Tabizi was a well regarded and powerful uber - perhaps one of only six worldly recognised ubers from Africa and certainly a force for good (although his philosophy for what was good was heavily dependent on Marxist theory). He married his long-time girlfriend, Claire, who was the secretary for the Ministry of Defence, and had a golden era during the 1980s.

Note: Infinity began his career as a hero, but after political change in the Congo in 1990 things changed (see the entry on Infinite Man).

Unfortunately, for all the good he was doing, Tabizi was slowly succumbing to the detrimental effects of his earlier experiments. He began to have psychotic episodes, raging at the government which had abandoned Marxism in 1990. He began to believe that the Numen-Kami Institute had poisoned him and attacked the New Men on occasion, an action which led to the death of Saul Numen (a death which was temporary due to Numen's exceptional regenerative abilities).

As the Infinite Man, Tabizi became one of the most powerful adversaries for the New Men and still operates across Africa and Europe, although his motivations are shrouded in mystery even as his power levels have amplified tremendously.

Personality

During his time as Infinity, Tabizi was a dogged believer in Marxism and used his powers to promote his dream of everyone being equal. Sometimes this clashed with government goals and frequently with the goals of other governments and individuals, but Tabizi remained firm and earned a reputation for being a people's hero. He worked for the good of all. His clash with Dr Numen over the misappropriation of uberhuman research caused a fracture in their friendship, but Tabizi never regarded it as a betrayal and believed he was only doing what was best for everyone. He never did manage to apologise or understand Numen's position.

Quote

"Everything we need is right here in front of us."

Powers

Inifinity has the ability to tap into the 'infinity force' which allows him to break down and remodel molecules and atoms. At the peak of his heroic period during the late 1980s he was able to use this force to recreate or remodel any object, although smaller objects were much easier to transform. He usually used this ability to disable weapons and defences in combat, and to create shelter, food and water during his humanitarian acts.

He was able to fly, become invisible by manipulating electromagnetic waves, emit heat beams from his eyes and had enhanced senses of sight (infrared vision) and hearing. Inifinity was also resistent to injury and possessed regenerative abilities.

Appearance

In his human form Dr Tabizi was a clean-shaven man in his thirties with tightly curled black hair. He usually wore white shirts and trousers in his work as a government scientist.

As Infinity his skin becomes a silver-blue colour and his eyes burn with a bright orange intensity. In this form he has no hair, although he does have ridges where his eyebrows should be. His clothes transform as well, and while his torso is naked he wears bright red pants with silver-grey boots and wrist bands, and has a black belt with an infinity logo.

Notes

Infinite Man will be coming soon - and added here as a comment (stay tuned)

#40 MAMBA MUTU (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

mambamutu.jpg

MAMBA MUTU

Marie-Louise Sechan

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The mamba mutu are mythic creatures, half-women and half-crocodile, who ensnare and drown unwary fishermen in the lakes and rivers of the Congo. While not mythic in origin, the woman who calls herself Mamba Mutu has drawn upon the fear and suspicion of the local myth. Since operating in and around Kinshasa for nearly three years she has brought an atmosphere of fear and paranoia into the criminal underworld of that city.

It's unknown exactly what drove Frenchwoman Marie-Louise Sechan to take on the persona of Mamba Mutu. She was born in Lyon, France and her father had dealings in Kinshasa, particularly in the banking industry, although he died when she was thirteen. Her activities in Kinshasa are not well documented and have probably been destroyed by Sechan herself. What is known is that she worked in one of her father's former banks for several months but then promptly disappeared.

Although Mamba Mutu has not been connected with Sechan, it has been reported that Mamba Mutu has a terrible scar across her shoulder and arm, the result of a vicious crocodile attack. It can be assumed that the attack occurred after her disappearance from Kinshasa and may have been the catalyst for her transformation into Mamba Mutu.

Her activities have generally involved the intimidation and murder of criminals and militia groups from Rwanda, although she has also shown an interest in stealing from banks or rich households when the need arises. She is hunted by the police but is currently seen more as a vigilante than a villain. Africa Force believes Mamba Mutu will be an ally when the Sons of Set arrive in Kinshasa, although Mamba Mutu herself has openly shown an interest in the Egyptian sect.

The future remains a mystery where she is concerned, although she will maintain her merciless attack on criminals.

Personality

Mamba Mutu is ruthless when it comes to hunting down and punishing criminals. She has never actually articulated the reasons for her assault, but has hinted that it is only because she doesn't want the full heat of the law on her tail. If she attacked the general public, more people would be determined to bring her in. While she attacks criminals they seem to be only half-interested in her arrest.

Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Whatever her reasons Mamba Mutu has shown a vicious dislike for criminals and has killed many in her three years of activity. She doesn't seem to differentiate the levels of crime either and has attacked shoplifters as well as murderers.

Quote

"The chain always finds its mark, and the blood you spill marks you as mine."

Powers

Mamba Mutu relies primarily on her crocodile chain which is a heavy martial art weapon with a blade at one end. She can use this chain in close and ranged combat, as well as using it to spin into a shield which can deflect incoming attacks. She has also collected a series of gadgets including throwing blades, counter security devices and flares. These devices run on electricity and are recharged when placed back in her utility belt through a battery charging unit. Her gloves contain microscopic climbing claws which enable her to scale walls, and her mask (while appearing quite intimidating) also provides her with heightened and protected senses.

In addition to her chain and utility belt, Mamba Mutu possesses high levels of physical fitness, strength and agility. She is a well trained martial artist and quite ferocious in combat seemingly unwilling to let any opponent escape.

Appearance

Sechan is In her thirties, has brown hair to her shoulders and curious brown eyes. She has a large crocodile bite on her shoulder and upper arm from an unexplained encounter. It appears as a semi-circle and is quite noticeable. She has cast off her civilian identity so when out of costume she rarely gives much thought to how she looks. She doesn't work and often sleeps during the daylight hours, in an apartment she rents in Kinshasa.

As Mamba Mutu she takes on a truly frightening visage. She wears a mask with a wide fanged mouth and lime-green lenses. Her bodysuit is dark olive green and she wears darker green boots and gloves, tipped with lighter green finger gloves. She wears a dark brown-green hooded cloak lined inside with tan, and carries her heavy chain weapon, often slung over her shoulder.
