Did they make this crap up for that one story or was it changed before that for some equally stupid reason?[/quote'] That's the result of John Byrne's post-Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot of Superman's background. His version of the Kryptonians were a very technologically advanced, but socially rigid and emotionally sterile culture, their planet rendered nearly barren after ancient wars. Supes' father Jor-El was an exception; one reason he chose to send his son to Earth was because our society is still relatively young, passionate and forward-looking, qualities which he felt were important that Kryptonians had lost. That version remained canon for many years afterward, but I don't know if it's since been changed again. I haven't read comics in some time.
