Re: The Robots QAAre Coming

What always strikes me about the BigDog videos is the way it looks so bad at walking normally, taking those mincing little steps, and yet when it slips or someone shoves it, it looks ALIVE as it catches its balance.

The other thing that occurs to me is, how is this thing better than a much cheaper and much quieter mule?

No it adds fuel needed along with maintence personel

a Mule can eat grass on the side of the road

If killed or wounded you can eat it if nessessary or if you run low on food

what it adds is a rough terrain pack vehicle that won't run away if shot at

It doesn't need a mule skinner and it doesn't add oats to your logistical tail.

Right now - probably not better at all.

But, it has the possible advantages of range, carrying capacity could increase, and of course we can program them like drones: miniature mobile missile platforms you can walk out into terrain where you want them exactly, and fire. I see these as pretty useful urban warfare additions eventually.

This is a design study prototype. Not even a series production prototype.

It's like asking how a calf that is just born and has difficulty to stand up could "ever be as good as the full grown mule next to it".

It is an important step that it can prevent falling, even when slipping on ice. Once we manage to perfect it (and it's movement speed), we can scale it.

So the AT-AT isn't that far anymore.
