Last Tuesdayism

Your character finds a dying person they recognize as a time-travelling adventurer they have encounted before. In fact they once helpfully gave your character a lift back to their present. Their injuries are consistent with those that would be inflicted by a powerful nation-ruling villain in the campaign. However, the time-traveller tells your character that this has only been true for the last week, when that villain went back in time and tampered with history to allow himself that success.

You investigate the time-traveller's timeship and learn things about the "true" history that disturb you. It's fair to say that the world he came from was in many ways a darker and grittier world than the one that your character currently lives in. If it's a Bronze Age campaign, the previous world will be Iron, if Silver, Bronze, and so on. If Iron, then some kind of post zombie holocaust reality or something.

Does your character feel any sense of obligation to how things "should be"?

tuff-man wouldn't like someone playing god by altering the past but all he could do is stop him before he went back in time if he found out about his plans

History has already been changed, you know about it, and you have an easy to use time machine with which to revert things back to the way they were before, or preserve the status quo as your character chooses.

Re: Last Tuesdayism

The Economaster has been told by her spiritual patrons that other entities are in charge of maintaining the time-stream, and no one before 3030 is allowed to profit from time manipulations. She would help this version of the hero he knows get back in shape and send him on his way.

The Golem wouldn't really understand time-travel, nor place any value on how time 'should' be... and if this hero were going to bring about some zombie apocalypse type future by 'setting things right' it would probably trash the time machine (with great apologies)

Re: Last Tuesdayism

Dolphin briefly considers going back about ten thousand years, finding whoever first had the idea for agriculture, and kicking them in the nards. Briefly.

Iron Will accesses any data on the machine to see if this less-dysopian time line is setting up the species/planet for something that the "real" timeline could have handled. Unless he finds compelling evidence that the "real" timeline should be restored, he'll leave well enough alone.

Millennium will consider if the "real" timeline should be restored, then decide against it.

All will be more interested in taking out the powerful nation-ruling villain in the "here and now" rather than restoring the "real" timeline.

Rose: If possible, use the machine to see if the future calls for any particular nastiness that could be avoided in the "real" timeline. If not, then decide against it. If the time traveler sincerely believes that the alternate timeline needs to be discarded in opt for his timeline, then maybe help him if convincingly asked.

Re: Last Tuesdayism

Apollyon: In studying the timeline he would look for key events in the alternate histories and how they play against each other. Moving both timelines forward he would look for other key points that affect the worlds overall well being. Once this data has been compiled he would try and run comparison tests to see when the best point in history is to alter the time stream to leave many of the social improvements intact. With this he would target that year, be it in the future or past to remove the false leader. Yes, it may take years to put the data together but he's got all the time in the world.

Re: Last Tuesdayism

Vitus would, at first, find it difficult to believe in a reality MORE miserable and annoying than the one he's already living in, but then, as a pessimist, would agree that that's simply a failure of imagination of his part. As to switching the universe back, **** 'em. He's had enough problems crossing timelines arleady, he sure as hell isn't going to do it by choice.

Iron Maiden, Hell's Angel, Black Mask, Raven, Black Knight--pretty much all of my characters--would leave well enough alone. Especially if their timeline is better than the "real" one is supposed to be. In that case, give the meddlers a cookie. If the altered timeline is better, unless it's WAY better, they'd still leave well enough alone.

Re: Last Tuesdayism

Sage is an ancient egyptian (very much living) 'mummy' from a WoD-like reality living in modern day Hong Kong. I guess the world would rate as Iron Age.

In case the original timeline was Worse than the current timeline, Sage would tell the time traveler: "You must be confused. Clearly the change my rival Archwizard has done here is for the greater good. In this scenario you heroes should encourage him to keep up the good work, not to work to undermine him. Besides, tampering with history should not be given to amateurs, so I shall take your time travel magics from you and keep them safe. Thank you." She turns to go, stops and says over her shoulder: "Now, let me call someone to tend your wounds before I go."

In case the original timeline was Better than the current timeline, Sage would tell the time traveler with eyes blazing: "So Archwizard made the world less enjoyable, probably just to annoy me. Don't worry. I will take care of it." She would study the time travel talisman, consider her options for maybe half a minute before traveling back to some suitable spot in the history to fix time as neatly as possible, possibly not even twisting it much towards reality of her liking.

Thanks for creating a scenario to think through Clonus.
