Background/History: Brian Chapman was born and raised on a farm on Kansas. His parents instilled a strong sense of right and wrong in him and at school he proved himself equally adept at his studies as at sports, due to a combination of a lively intelligence and a strong work ethic. He excelled at track and football, but he was never a “jock”, at least not in the sense of a being a bully or a jerk and had his sights set on being a professional football player, an ambition which was furthered when he got into college on a football scholarship

It was during a football match that the accident happened. A bad collision with another player sent Brian onto his back. His team mates gathered round, thinking he had been badly injured and got a shock. As one of his team mates observed, “Hey it looks like he's covered in black steel!” Although later testing revealed it to more akin to titanium, although much tougher. Brian stuck with the name “Black Steel”, though, since it sounded better.

Of course, that was the end of his football career. At a metahuman, Brian was banned from professional sports. But as one career path closed, another opened, that of superhero. And when JoAnne Wilson aka Casimir, of the SF-based Champions offered him a position on the team, he jumped at the chance.

Personality/Motivation: Black Steel considers himself a professional superhero. The fearlessness he displayed on the field quickly translated into a reputation for heroism as a superhero. As a person, Black Steel is part Samaritan, part entertainer, motivated as much by the adulation of the crowd as by the satisfaction he feels when helping people.

Quote: “Isn't this awesome?”

Powers/Tactics: Even in his normal form, Brian Chapman is prodigiously strong, easily able to bench press twice his own weight, and fast, with amazing reflexes. In his armoured form he has the ability to lift almost a thousand times his own weight and displays phenomenal resistance to almost all forms of damage, whether weapons fire, corrosion He can effect this change at will and remain in his armoured form for an as yet unknown length of time. However, if he is knocked out, he reverts back to his normal form. Nor does being in his armoured form have a detrimental effect on his speed, agility or quickness. However, the change is all or nothing, even his eyeballs and hair becoming metallic.

In this armoured form, Black Steel is highly resistant to most forms of bodily harm. His armour can withstand ballistic penetration, even up to a 110mm howitzer shell. He could survive a collision with a loaded one-ton flatbed truck at a 160 kph or an explosion of just over 200 kg of TNT. He is capable of enduring extremes of temperature from 70 Kelvin (-203.15 degrees Celsius) to approximately 4773 Kelvin (4500 degrees Celsius). Above that, it is theorised that his armoured form would begin to melt. In addition, Black Steel's armour is extremely resistant to corrosion, both by normal Earthly atmospheric conditions and acids. Brian Chapman is in excellent physical condition, allowing him to change back and forth from his natural form to his armoured one with minimal stress to his system.

Black Steel is equally suited (and equally happy) to slug it out on the front lines as he is to play support. He uses the moves he learned on the field as a rough and ready fighting style, and has trained with Casimir and Ghost to give it more finesse.

Appearance: Brian Chapman is a tall, very athletic looking man in his late twenties with lively grey eyes and short dark brown hair. His costume is a sleeveless, V-necked navy blue top with a scarlet midriff and a slight flare to the shoulders, leggings which look like US Marine dress trousers and black work boots. In his armoured form, his metal skin shines as if polished.

Designer's Notes: Basically an American, ex-footballer version of Colossus.

Re: Black Steel

Nicely done.

I know from previous threads on building Colossus that OIHID normally requires a condition that prevents the transformation between forms and that in the case of Colossus there really isn't one. The solution was to use Linked and/or Visible instead. The costs work out to about the same as OIHID however so it is a minor point at best.

BLACK STEEL

8 10) Skin Of Black Steel II: Lack Of Weakness (-8) for Resistant Defenses, Hardened (+1/4) (12 Active Points); Visible (Obvious metallic body) (-1/4), OIHID (-1/4)

10 11) Black Steel Form: LS (Immunity: Blistering Agents; Safe Environment: Zero Gravity; Safe in High Pressure; Safe in High Radiation; Safe in Intense Cold; Safe in Intense Heat; Safe in Low Pressure/Vacuum) (13 Active Points); OIHID (-1/4)

13 13) Electrical Resistance: Energy Damage Reduction, Resistant, 50% (30 Active Points); Only Against Electricity-Based Attacks (-1), OIHID (-1/4)

13 14) Temperature Resistance: Energy Damage Reduction, Resistant, 50% (30 Active Points); Only Against Temperature-Based Attacks (-1), OIHID (-1/4)

Designer's Notes: Basically an American, ex-footballer version of Colossus.

I don't understand the reasoning behind placing DNAFC onto his increased STR and then turning around and paying for all of the normally figured stats- PD, REC, Stun seperately- why not just pay the 34 points for the Str and then save the 25 points off the Figured Chars, for an overall savings of 17 points- 18 if you then sell back the extra point of stun from Str. Factor the Body into this as well and ou are looking at an additional savings of 4 points by selling back the extra Stun from the body.

In addition, with your odd purchasing of the Resistant Energy Damage Reduction power multiple time, you pay MORE than the normal cost of the power to have a limited form of it- why not just buy it once with the Limitation: Only vs. Corrosion, Electricity, and Temperaturre-based attacks (-1/4) total cost:20 points, for a savings of 19 points over the current build? I understand not min-maxing a character for every advantage but to pay more points for less overall seems odd. with the 41 saved points you could have either fleshed the character out more or reduced the overall cost of the character, since you have a character built on over 50+ experience points that is much closer in level to a starting character.

Were there specific design reasons that you bult the character the way that you did that I am not seeing?

Re: Black Steel

I don't have an issue with a metalic PC being resistant to electricity. Not every metal is conductive, a few are better then others, and if Ben Franklin had floated up a pork chop instead of a metal key on that kite, well, you can guess that the results would have been a bit different. Gotta be a reason we use metal to send electricity where we want it to go anyway without having to replace it every 15 seconds.

Now, you wanna have a fun bad guy to use against that build though, break out, Tig Welder, master of entangles against metalic PC's :D

Re: Black Steel

The truth of the build is that I just cribbed it more or less wholesale from a write-up of Colossus I found on Ghost Archer's site and wasn't "thinking" as such, at all.

Yeas, I know that makes me a fool.

The reason why the electricity doesn't hurt him is because it grounds through his metal skin and never reaches his organs.

Re: Black Steel

Heh, well technically speaking when Colossus armors up it's everything, not just his skin but the explanation still fits. At least that's as technical as it gets when one is discussing mutant comic book stuff. Most of Marvel's characters that are super tough are pretty resistant to electricity as well.
