Wall of Voodoo must be thrilled their hit song's second verse is relevant again after all these decades.

I feel a hot wind on my shoulder
And the touch of a world that is older
Turn the switch and check the number
Leave it on when in bed I slumber
I hear the rhythms of the music
I buy the product and never use it
I hear the talking of the dj
Can't understand just what does he say?

I'm on a Mexican radio
I'm on a Mexican radio

I dial it in and tune the station
They talk about the U.S. inflation
I understand just a little
No comprende--it's a riddle

I'm on a Mexican radio
I'm on a Mexican radio

I wish I was in Tiajuana
Eating barbecued iguana
I'd take requests on the telephone
I'm on a wavelength far from home
I feel a hot wind on my shoulder
I dial it in from south of the border
I hear the talking of the DJ
Can't understand just what does he say?

Radio, radio...

A while ago, I heard the sound of children's laughter
Now it's quiet, so I guess they left the park
This wooden bench is getting harder by the hour
The sun is going down, it's getting dark

I realise I'm cold, the rain begins to pour
As I watch the windows on the second floor
The lights are on, it's time to go (ooh)
It's time at last, to let him know

I believe it would be fair to say, "You look bewildered"
And you wonder why I'm here today
And so you should, I would
When I left, I felt I've had enough
But in the shape and form, I appear now
I have learned to cope, and love and hope is why I am here now

And now you see another me, I've been reloaded, yeah
I'm fired up, don't shut me down
I'm like a dream within a dream that's been decoded
I'm fired up, I'm hot, don't shut me down
I'm not the one you knew, I'm now, and then combined
And I'm asking you to have an open mind (and I won't be the same)
I'm not the same this time around (ooh)
I'm fired up, don't shut me down

Will you leave me standing in the hall or let me enter?
The apartment hasn't changed at all
I've got to say, "I'm glad"
Once these rooms were witness to our love
My tantrums and increasing frustration
But I go from mad, to not so bad
In my transformation

And now you see another me, I've been reloaded, yeah
I'm fired up, don't shut me down (don't shut me down)
I'm like a dream, within a dream, that's been decoded
I'm fired up, I'm hot, don't shut me down
I am not the one you knew (I'm not the one you knew)
I'm now, and then combined
And I'm asking you to have an open mind (now, I'll not be the same)
I'm not the same this time around (ooh)
I'm fired up, don't shut me down

You ask me not to leave
Well, here I am again
And I love you still and so I won't pretend
I have learnt to cope, and love and hope is why I am here now

I still have faith in you
I see it now
Through all these years that faith lives on
Somehow

There was a union
Of heart and mind
The likes of which are rare
And, oh, so hard to find

Do I have it in me?
I believe it is in there
For I know I hear a bittersweet song
In the memories we share

I still have faith in you
And I will say
I never really thought I'd feel this way

But I remind myself
Of who we are
How inconceivable it is to reach this far

Do I have it in me?
I believe it is in there
For I know I hear a bittersweet song
In the memories we share

We do have it in us
New spirit has arrived
The joy and the sorrow
We have a story and it survived

And we need one another
Like fighters in a ring
We're in this together
Passion and courage is everything

I still have faith in you
It stands above
The crazy things we did
It all comes down to love

Do I have it in me?
I believe it is in there
For I know I hear a bittersweet song
In the memories we share

Do I have it in me?

We do have it in us
New spirit has arrived
The joy and the sorrow
We have a story and it survived

And we know that we need one another
Like fighters in a ring
We're in this together
Passion and courage is everything

And we still have it in us
We've only just begun
(Do I have it in me?)
We stand on a summit
Humble and grateful to have survived

I still have faith in you
It's stands above the crazy things we did
It all comes down to love
Do I have it in me?

Seven O'clock in the evening
Watchin' somethin' stupid on TV
I'm zoned out on the sofa
When my wife comes in the room and sees me

And she says "is this 'Behind the Music'
With Lynard Skynard?"
And I say I don't know
Say, it's gettin' late, watcha wanna do for dinner?

She says "I kinda had a big lunch
So I'm not super hungry"
I said, well you know, baby, I'm not starvin' either
But I could eat"

She said "So whadya have in mind?"
I said I don't know what about you?
She said "I don't care, if you're hungry, let's eat"
I said that's what we're gonna do!

But first you gotta tell me
What it is you're hungry for!
And she says "let me think,
What's left in our refrigerator?"

I said well, there's tuna, I know
She said "That went bad a week ago!"
I said is the chili okay?
She said "you finished that yesterday!"

I hopped up and I said
I don't know, do you want to get something delivered?
She's like "why would I want to eat liver?
I don't even like liver!"

I'm like no, I said 'delivered'
She's like "I heard you say liver!"
I'm like I should know what I said
She's like "whatever, I just don't want any liver!"

Well I was gonna say something
But my cell phone started to ring
Now who could be callin' me?
Well I checked my caller ID

It was just cousin Larry
Callin' for the third time today
My wife said "Let it go to voicemail"
I said okay

Where were we? Oh, Dinner, Right
So what d'ya want to do?
She said "why don't you whip up somethin in the kitchen?"
Yeah, I said why don't you?

And then she said "baby, can't we just go out to dinner, please?"
I says no
She says "yes"
I says no
She says "yes"
I says no
She says "yes
Oh, here's your keys"

I step a little bit closer
Say okay, where ya want to go?
She says "how about The Ivy?"
I said yeah, well I don't know

I don't feel like gettin all dressed up

And eatin' expensive food
She's says "Olive Garden?"
I say nah, I'm not in the mood

And Burrito King would make me gassy
There's no doubt
She says "Just forget about it"
I said no, I swear I'm gonna take you out!

Then I get an idea
I says I know what we'll do!
She says "What?"
I say, guess?
She says "What?"
I say we're goin' to the drive-thru!

So we head out the front door
Open the garage door
Then I open the car doors
And we get in those car doors

Put my key in the ignition
And then I turn it sideways
Then we fasten our seat belts
As we pull out the driveway

Then we drive to the drive-thru
Heading off to the drive-thru
We're approaching the drive-thru
Getting close to the drive-thru!

Almost there at the drive-thru
Now we're here at the drive thru
Here in line at the drive-thru
Did I mention the drive-thru?

Well here we are
In the drive-thru line, me and her
Cars in front of us, cars in back of us
All just waiting to order

There's some idiot in a Volvo
With his brights on behind me
I lean out the window and scream
Hey, Whatcha tryin to do, blind me?

My wife says "maybe we should park
We could just go eat inside"
I said I'm wearin' bunny slippers
So I ain't leavin' this ride

Now a woman on a speaker box
Is sayin' "Can I take your order, please?"
I said yes indeed, you certainly can
We'd like two hamburgers with onions and cheese

Then my wife says
"Baby, hold on, I've changed my mind!
I think I'm gonna have a chicken sandwich
Instead, this time"

I said you always get a cheeseburger!
She says "That's not what I'm hungry for"
I put my head in my hands and screamed,
I don't know who you are anymore!

The voice on the speaker says
"I don't have all day!"
I said, then, take our order,
And we'll be on our way!

I wanna get a chicken sandwich
And I want a cheeseburger, too
She's like "you want onions on that?"
I'm like, yeah, I already said that I do

Plus we need curly fries
And don't you dare forget it!
And two medium root beers
No, just one, we'll split it"

Then I said I'm guessin' that
You're probably not too bright
So read me back my order
Let's make sure you got it right

She says "one, you want a chicken sandwich
Two, you want a cheeseburger
Three, curly fries, and a large root beer"
Stop, don't go no further!

I never ordered a large rootbeer
I said medium, not large!
Then she says "we're havin' a special,
I supersized you at no charge"

"Oh" and that's all
I could say, was "Oh"
And she says "now there is somethin' else
That I really think you should know

You can have unlimited refills
For just a quarter more"
I say, great, except we're in the drive thru
So what would I want that for?

Then she says "Wait a minute
Your voice sounds so familiar hey, is this Paul?
And my wife is all like "no, that ain't Paul,
Now tell me, who's this Paul?

She says "Oh, he's just some guy
Who goes to school with me
I sat behind him last year
And I copied off him in Geometry

I said I know a guy named Paul
He used to be my plumber
He was prematurely bald
And he moved to Pittsburgh last summer

He also had bladder problems
And a really bad infection on his toe
And she said "Mister, please, you can stop right there,
That's way more than I needed to know!"

And then we both were quiet
And things got real intense
Then she says "next window please,
That'll be five dollars and eighty two cents"

So we inched ahead in line
Movin' painfully slow
I got a little bored
So I turned on the radio

Click, turned it off
Because my wife was getting a headache
So we both just sat there quietly
For her sake

Then I looked at her
And she looked back at me
And I said umm,
I think you have somethin' in your teeth

She turned away from me
And then turned back and said "did I get it?"
I said yeah well, I mean, most of it
But hey, ya know, don't sweat it

Then she said "how about now?"
I said yeah, almost
There's still a little bit there
But don't worry, it's probably just a piece of toast"

Now we're at the pay window
Or whatever you call it
Put my hand in my pocket
I can't believe there's no wallet!

And the lady at the window's like,
"Well, well, well, that'll be five eighty two"
I turn around to my wife, and say
How much have you got on you?

She just rolls her eyes and says
"I'll pay for this, I guess"
So she reaches into her purse
And pulls out the American Express

I hand it to the lady
And she says "oh, dear
It's gotta be cash only
We don't take credit cards here"

I took back the card and said
Gee, really? Well that sucks
And that's when I found out
My wife was only carryin' three bucks

I said I thought you were
Going to hit the ATM today
She says "I never got around to it
So where's your wallet anyway?

And I said never mind,
Just help me to find some change
Now the lady at the window
Is lookin' at me kinda strange

And she says "Mister, please,
We gotta move this line along"
I said now hold your stinkin' horses lady,
We won't be long

So, we looked around inside the glove-box
And check the mat beneath my feet
I found a nickel in the ashtray
And a couple pennies and a dime in the space between he seats

Before long I had a little pile
Of coins of every sort
The lady counts it up and says
"You're still about a dollar short"

And now my woman's got this weird look
Frozen on her face
She screams, "you know
I wasn't even really hungry in the first place"

And so I turned around
To the cashier again
I shrugged and said okay
Forget the chicken sandwich then

So I pick up my change
Pick up my receipt
And I drive to the pickup window
Man, I just can't wait to eat

And now we see this acne ridden
Kid about sixteen
Wearin' a dorky name tag that says
"Hello, my name is Eugene"

And he hands me a paper bag
I look him in the eyes
And I say to him, hey, Eugene,
Could I get some ketchup for my fries?

Well he looks at me
And I look at him
And he looks at me
And I look at him
And he looks at me
And I look at him
And he says "I'm sorry
What did you want again?"

I say ketchup!
And he says "oh yeah, that's right
I just spaced out there for a second
I'm really kind of burnt tonight"

And then he hands me the ketchup
And now we're finally drivin' away
And the food is drivin' me mad
With its intoxicating bouquet

I'm starvin' to death
By the time we pull up at the traffic light
I say, baby, gimme that burger,
I just gotta have a bite!

So she reaches in the bag
And pulls out the burger
And she hands me the burger
And I pick up the burger
And then I unwrap the paper
I bite into those buns
And I just can't believe it
They forgot the onions!

He had what you might call a trivial occupation
He cleaned the platforms of the local railway station
With no romance in his life
Sometimes he wished he had a wife

He read the matrimonial advertising pages
The cries for help from different people, different ages
But they had nothing to say
At least not until the day
When something special he read
This is what it said:

If you dream of the girl for you
Then call us and get two for the price of one
We're the answer if you feel blue
So call us and get two for the price of one
If you dream of the girl for you
Then call us and get two for the price of one
We're the answer if you feel blue
So call us and get two for the price of one

He called the number and a voice said, "Alice Whiting"
The voice was husky and it sounded quite exciting
He was amazed at his luck
The purest streak of gold he'd struck

He said, "I read your ad, it sounded rather thrilling
I think a meeting could be mutually fulfilling
Why don't we meet for a chat?
The three of us in my flat
I can't forget what I read"

This is what it said:

If you dream of the girl for you
Then call us and get two for the price of one
We're the answer if you feel blue
So call us and get two for the price of one
If you dream of the girl for you
Then call us and get two for the price of one
We're the answer if you feel blue
So call us and get two (For the price of one...)

Se said, "I'm sure we must be perfect for each other
And if you doubt it you'll be certain when you meet my mother."

I must have left my house at eight, because I always do
My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due
I must have read the morning paper going into town
And having gotten through the editorial, no doubt I must have frowned
I must have made my desk around a quarter after nine
With letters to be read, and heaps of papers waiting to be signed
I must have gone to lunch at half past twelve or so
The usual place, the usual bunch
And still on top of this I'm pretty sure it must have rained
The day before you came

I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two
And at the time I never even noticed I was blue
I must have kept on dragging through the business of the day
Without really knowing anything, I hid a part of me away
At five I must have left, there's no exception to the rule
A matter of routine, I've done it ever since I finished school
The train back home again
Undoubtedly I must have read the evening paper then
Oh yes, I'm sure my life was well within it's usual frame
The day before you came

I must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so
And stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go
I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on TV
There's not, I think, a single episode of Dallas that I didn't see
I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten
I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then
I must have read a while
The latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style
It's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim
The day before you came

And turning out the light
I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night
And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain
The day before you came

Donna found us in her slow and dreamy way
I can't hear a word the waiter says
She's looking older now...
The color of her hair
She walks into the room and pleased to find me there

Me I'm touchy - Touchy you
Me I'm touchy
And you know what to do
Me I'm touchy
Touchy, touchy you
Me I'm touchy and you know what to do

Both of us together in a room by ourselves
I sneeze to look around, but there's no escape
What can I do, what can I say
She's waiting for this moment to explain itself

Me I'm touchy - Touchy you
Me I'm touchy
And you know what to do
Me I'm touchy
Touchy, touchy you
Touching love is the best I can do
Hey, this time you've gone too far
You know how touchy we are

Donna found me in her slow and dreamy way
Now she reads me what the papers say
The way she laughs at what I do
I'm waiting for this moment to explain itself through

Calling all dreamers and optimistic fools
Don't let go of your dream make it now make it all come true
If you believe in a brighter day
I know we can find our way

To this island, in a starry ocean
Poetry in motion, this island earth
Spinnin' like a dancer, gravity is the answer
Rendezvous in the blue, this island earth

We don't know what's in store today
We can spread our wings and we can soar away
Or we can go like the dinosaurs, they say
The choice is ours to make

All this seems like yesterday
We can wake up one day and be history
Or stick around to unravel the mystery
Of how we came to be

On this island, in a starry ocean
Poetry in motion, this island earth
A beautiful oasis for all the human races
The only home that we know, this island earth

Well I know we can touch the stars one day
Kick up the dust on Mars one day
Or trip the light of the Milky Way
We've got to find our way

If you're lookin' for a miracle open your eyes
There was one this morning just about sunrise
Dawn came breakin' like a wave on the sea
And it's there for you and me

Calling all dreamers and optimistic fools
Don't let go of your dream make it now make it all come true
If you believe in a brighter day
I know we can find our way

To this island, in a starry ocean
She's poetry in motion, this island earth
Spinnin' like a dancer, gravity is the answer
Rendezvous in the blue, this island earth

Whoa, this island earth

I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow 'cause I know what my worth is

I don't ask how hard the work is

Got a rough indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em
I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded

But
Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus
Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service

A flaw or a crack
The straw in the stack
That breaks the camel's back
What breaks the camel's back it's

Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'till you just go pop, whoa
Give it to your sister, your sister's older
Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder
Who am I if I can't run with the ball?
If I fall to

Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa
Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
If I falter

Under the surface
I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us
Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?

Line up the dominoes
A light wind blows
You try to stop it tumbling
But on and on it goes

But wait
If I could shake the crushing weight of expectations
Would that free some room up for joy
Or relaxation, or simple pleasure?
Instead we measure this growing pressure
Keeps growing, keep going
'Cause all we know is

Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt
And see if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks
No mistakes just

Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would've pulled you under
Who am I if I don't have what it takes?
No cracks, no breaks
No mistakes, no pressure

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no!
We don't talk about Bruno... but

It was my wedding day
(It was our wedding day)
We were getting ready, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky
(No clouds allowed in the sky)
Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin-
(Thunder!!)
You telling this story, or am I?
(I'm sorry, mi vida, go on)

Bruno says, "It looks like rain"
(Why did he tell us?)
In doing so, he floods my brain
(Abuela, get the umbrellas)
Married in a hurricane
(What a joyous day... but anyway)

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no!
We don't talk about Bruno!

Hey! Grew to live in fear of Bruno stuttering or stumbling
I could always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling
I associate him with the sound of falling sand, ch-ch-ch
It's a heavy lift, with a gift so humbling
Always left Abuela and the family fumbling
Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand
Do you understand?

A seven-foot frame
Rats along his back
When he calls your name
It all fades to black
Yeah, he sees your dreams
And feasts on your screams (hey!)

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no! (We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no!)
We don't talk about Bruno (we don't talk about Bruno!)

He told me my fish would die
The next day: dead! (No, no!)
He told me I'd grow a gut!
And just like he said... (no, no!)
He said that all my hair would disappear, now look at my head (no, no! Hey!)
Your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read!

He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised, and someday be mine
He told me that my power would grow, like the grapes that thrive on the vine
(Óye, Mariano's on his way)

He told me that the man of my dreams would be just out of reach
Betrothed to another
It's like I hear him now
Hey sis, I want not a sound out of you (it's like I can hear him now)
I can hear him now

Um, Bruno...
Yeah, about that Bruno...
I really need to know about Bruno...
Gimmie the truth and the whole truth, Bruno
(Isabella, your boyfriend's here)
Time for dinner!

A seven-foot frame (it was my wedding day, it was our wedding day)
Rats along his back (we were getting ready)
When he calls your name (and there wasn't a cloud in the sky)
It all fades to black (no clouds allowed in the sky!)

Yeah, he sees your dreams (Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin-)
And feasts on your screams (thunder!)
You telling this story, or am I?
I'm sorry, mi vida, go on (óye, Mariano's on his way)

Bruno says, "It looks like rain" (a seven-foot frame, rats along his back)
In doing so, he floods my brain
Married in a hurricane
He's here!

Don't talk about Bruno, no! (Why did I talk about Bruno?)
Not a word about Bruno
I never should've brought up Bruno!

Do you mean this horny creep
Set upon weary feet
Who looks in need of sleep
That doesn't come ?

This twisted, tortured mess
This bed of sinfulness
Who's longing for some rest
And feeling numb

What do you expect of me ?
What is it you want ?
Whatever you've planned for me
I'm not the one

A vicious appetite
Visits me each night
And won't be satisfied
Won't be denied

An unbearable pain
A beating in my brain
That leaves the mark of Cain
Right here inside

What am I supposed to do
When everything that I've done
Is leading me to conclude
I'm not the one ?

Whatever I've done
I've been staring down the barrel of a gun
Whatever I've done
I've been staring down the barrel of a gun
Whatever I've done (Whatever, whatever)

Is there something you need from me ?
Are you having your fun ?
I never agreed to be
Your holy one

Whatever I've done
I've been staring down the barrel of a gun
Whatever I've done (Whatever, whatever)
I've been staring down the barrel of a gun
Whatever I've done (Whatever, whatever)
I've been staring down the barrel of a gun

Hungry as a fire, waiting for the flicker
Waiting for the black hook, slow burn of love
Sitting in an armchair, lovers in a cold war
Brittle as a brick wall, oh...

But I want you with all of my might
'Cause I think we can make this thing right, baby

Give me your heart, the touch of your hand
The sound of your voice and I will be victorious
Hold on to me, like I hold on to you
Make it come true and I will be victorious

You were such a stranger, lying there beside me
Moving like a river, oh...
I was so afraid that I was gonna lose you
That I could never have you here in my arms

But I want you with all of my might
'Cause I think we can make this thing right

Give me your heart, the touch of your hand
The sound of your voice and I will be victorious
Hold on to me, like I hold on to you
Make it come true and I will be victorious

Smoke in the sky
Slime in the sea
Tall timber tumblin' down around me

Red acid rain
Glows in the night
Nuclear winter closes down on me

The light of the world is fading to black
And the absence of people who care
Is bringing me down, bringing me down

God save the queen
Dear mother earth is dying away
Time's running out
One more tomorrow depends on today

Nowhere to run
Nowhere to hide
Greenhouse condition getting' steamier

Nobody's clean
Nobody's free
Nobody's breathin' any easier

The children of earth are dying each day
And the nightmare of who is to blame
Is bringing me down, bringing me down

God save the queen
Dear mother earth is dying away
Time's running out
One more tomorrow depends on today

I know just how to whisper
And I know just how to cry
I know just where to find the answers
And I know just how to lie

I know just how to fake it
And I know just how to scheme
I know just when to face the truth
And then I know just when to dream

And I know just where to touch you
And I know just what to prove
I know when to pull you closer
And I know when to let you loose

And I know the night is fading
And I know the time's gonna fly
And I'm never gonna tell you everything I've gotta tell you
But I know I've gotta give it a try

And I know the roads to riches
And I know the ways to fame
I know all the rules and then I know how to break 'em
And I always know the name of the game

But I don't know how to leave you
And I'll never let you fall
And I don't know how you do it
Making love out of nothing at all
Out of nothing at all

Everytime I see you all the rays of the sun are
Streaming through the waves in your hair
And every star in the sky is taking aim at
Your eyes like a spotlight

The beating of my heart is a drum, and it's lost
And it's looking for a rhythm like you
You can take the darkness at the pit of the night
And turn into a beacon burning endlessly bright
I've gotta follow it 'cause everything I know
Well, it's nothing 'til I give it to you

I can make the runner stumble
I can make the final block
I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle
I can make all the stadiums rock

I can make tonight forever
Or I can make it disappear by the dawn
I can make you every promise that has ever been made
And I can make all your demons be gone

But I'm never gonna make it without you
Do you really want to see me crawl
And I'm never gonna make it like you do
Making love out of nothing at all
Out of nothing at all

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice in the mornin' hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Drivin' down the road, I get a feelin'
That I should've been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads

When I was a little bitty boy

Just up off the floor
We used to go out to grandma's house

Every month end or so
We'd have chicken pie, country ham
Homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about grandma's house
Was the great big feather bed

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
And soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It could hold eight kids and four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

After supper we'd sit around the fire

The old folks'd spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war
And Granny'd sing a ballad or two
And I'd sit and listen and watch the fire

'til the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing I'd know I'd wake up in the morning
In the middle of the old feather bed

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
And soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It could hold eight kids and four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

Well, I love my ma and I love my pa

I love granny and grandpa too
I've been fishin' with my uncle, I wrestled my cousin
I even kissed Aunt Lou, ew!
But if I ever had to make a choice

I guess it oughta be said
That I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road
For grandma's feather bed
Yes, I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road

(Well, maybe I'd better reconsider about the gal down the road)

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
And soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It could hold eight kids and four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
On grandma's feather bed

Up in a meadow in Jasper, Alberta
Two men and four ponies on a long, lonesome ride
To see the high country and learn of her people
The ways that they live there, the ways that they die

One is a teacher, and one a beginner
Just wanting to be there, wanting to know
And together they're trying to tell us a story
That should have been listened to long, long ago

How the life in the mountains is living in danger
From too many people, too many machines
And the time is upon us, today is forever
Tomorrow is just one of yesterdays dreams

Cold nights in Canada and icy blue winds
The man and the mountains are brothers again
Clear waters are laughing, they sing to the skies
The Rockies are living, they never will die

Up in a meadow in Jasper, Alberta
Two men and four ponies on a long, lonesome ride.

Had an uncle named Matthew
He was his father's only boy
Born just south of Colby, Kansas
He was his mother's pride and joy

Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love is just the way to live and die
Gold is just a windy Kansas wheat field
And blue is just a Kansas summer sky

And all the stories that he told me
Back when I was just a lad
All the memories that he gave me
All the good times that he had

Growin' up a Kansas farm boy
Life was mostly havin' fun
Ridin' on his Daddy's shoulders
Behind the mule, beneath the sun

Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love is just the way to live and die
Gold is just a windy Kansas wheat field
And blue is just a Kansas summer sky

Well, I guess there were some hard times
And I'm told some years were lean
They had a storm in forty-seven
A twister came and stripped them clean

He lost the farm and lost his family
He lost the wheat and lost his home
But he found a family Bible
Faith as solid as a stone

Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love is just the way to live and die
Gold is just a windy Kansas wheat field
And blue is just a Kansas summer sky

So he came to live at our house
And he came to work the land
He came to ease my Daddy's burden
And he came to be my friend

So, I wrote this down for Matthew
And it's for him the song is sung
Ridin' on his Daddy's shoulders
Behind the mule, beneath the sun

Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love is just the way to live and die
Gold is just a windy Kansas wheat field
And blue is just a Kansas summer sky

Yes, and joy was just the thing that he was raised on
Love is just the way to live and die
Gold is just a windy Kansas wheat field
Blue is just a Kansas summer sky

Lady, are you crying?
Do the tears belong to me?
Did you think our time together was all gone?

Lady, you've been dreaming
I'm as close as I can be
And I swear to you
Our time has just begun

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined
Became entwined
I wish that you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you happy?
Do you feel the way I do?
Are there meanings that you've never seen before?

Lady, my sweet lady
I just can't believe it's true
And it's like I've never ever loved before

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined
Became entwined
I wish that you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you crying?
Do the tears belong to me?
Did you think our time together was all gone?

Lady, my sweet lady

I'm as close as I can be
And I swear to you
Our time has just begun

Oh lay me down in Forest Lawn in a silver casket.
Put golden flowers over my head in a silver basket.
Let the Drum and Bugle Corps

Play "Taps" while cannons roar
While sixteen liveried employees sell souvenirs from the funeral store.

I want to go simply when I go.
They'll give me a simple funeral there I know.
With a casket lined in fleece,
And fireworks spelling out "Rest in Peace"
Oh take me when I'm gone to Forest Lawn.

Oh lay me down in Forest Lawn; they understand there.
And they have a heavenly choir and a military band there.
Just put me in their care

And I'll find my comfort there,
With sixteen planes in a last salute

They'll drop a cross with a parachute.

I want to go simply when I go,
And they'll give me a simple funeral there I know.
With a hundred strolling strings,
And topless dancers with golden wings
Oh take me when I'm gone to Forest Lawn.

Oh, come, come, come, come...
Come to the church in the wild wood,
Kindly leave a contribution in the pail.
Be as simple and as trusting as a child would,
And we'll sell you the church in the dale.

To find a simple resting place is my desire.
To lay me down with a smiling face comes a little bit higher.
My likeness cast in brass

Will stand in plastic grass
While hidden weights and springs will tip it's hat to the mourners filing past.

I want to go simply when I go.
They'll give me a simple funeral there I know.
I'll lie beneath the sand,
With piped-in tapes of Billy Graham.
Oh take me when I'm gone to Forest Lawn.

"Rock of Ages" cleft for me--
For a slightly higher fee.

Oh take me when I'm gone to Forest Lawn!

Amen

Hit the beat and take it to the bass now

I love you
But I gotta stay true
My morals got me on my knees
I'm beggin' please
Stop playin' games

I don't know what this is
But you got me good
Just like you knew you would

I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell.

You got me beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me
You got me beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me
I said release me

Now you think that I
Will be somethin' on the side
But you got to understand
That I need a man
Who can take my hand
Yes I do

I don't know what this is
But you got me good
Just like you knew you would

I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell

You got me beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me
You got me beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me
I said you better release me

[Background:]
You look at me and think we're the same kind
'Cause you don't know what I've got in my mind
I want a bit more than I'm asking for
But I just don't want to waste my time
You think that I'll be the other girl
Just like there's nothing in this world
I wanna have fun, go get me some
I just don't know where you're coming from

I'm beggin' you for mercy
Just why won't you release me
I'm beggin' you for mercy
You got me beggin', you got me beggin', you got me beggin'

Mercy
Why won't you release me
I'm beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me

You got me beggin' you for mercy
I'm beggin' you for mercy
I'm beggin' you for mercy
I'm beggin' you for mercy
I'm beggin' you for mercy
Why won't you release me

Break it down

Mercy
Begging you for mercy
You got me begging down on my knees
I said, you got me begging
Begging you for mercy
You got me begging
Begging you for mercy

When I get to Warwick Avenue
Meet me by the entrance of the tube
We can talk things over a little time
Promise me you won't step outta line

When I get to Warwick Avenue
Please drop the past and be true
Don't think we're okay, just because I'm here
You hurt me bad, but I won't shed a tear

I'm leaving you for the last time baby
You think you're loving but you don't love me
I've been confused outta my mind lately
You think you're loving but I want to be free
Baby you've hurt me

When I get to Warwick Avenue
We'll spend an hour, but no more than two
Our only chance to speak once more
I showed you the answers, now here's the door

When I get to Warwick Avenue
I'll tell you baby that we're through

I'm leaving you for the last time baby
You think you're loving but you don't love me
I've been confused outta my mind lately
You think you're loving but you don't love me
I want to be free, baby you've hurt me

All the days spent together, I wished for better
But I didn't want the train to come
Now it's departed
I'm broken hearted, seems like we never started
All those days spent together, when I wished for better
And I didn't want the train to come

You think you're loving but you don't love me
I want to be free, baby you've hurt me
You don't love me, I want to be free
Baby you've hurt me

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

Us and them

And after all we're only ordinary men
Me and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do

"Forward!" he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat
And the lines on the map
Moved from side to side

Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and down
And in the end it's only round 'n round

"Haven't you heard it's a battle of words?"
The poster bearer cried
"Listen son", said the man with the gun
"There's room for you inside."

"I mean, they're not gonna kill ya
So if you give 'em a quick short, sharp, shock
They won't do it again. Dig it?
I mean he get off lightly, 'cause I would've given him a thrashing
I only hit him once! It was only a difference of opinion, but really
I mean good manners don't cost nothing do they, eh?"

Down and out
It can't be helped that there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?

Out of the way
It's a busy day
I've got things on my mind

For the want of the price
Of tea and a slice
The old man died

Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.

I don't need you to worry for me 'cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind, but not on my time

They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you you can't sleep with somebody else
Ah, but sooner or later you sleep in your own space
Either way it's OK, you wake up with yourself

I don't need you to worry for me 'cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind, but not on my time
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone

Keep it to yourself it's my life.
Keep it to yourself it's my life.
Keep it to yourself it's my life.
Keep it to yourself it's my life.
