  1. Re: Hindu-themed hero

One that springs to mind immediately would be an Indian speedster-brick called Juggernaut (or Jagganath) who mirrors some of the saviour / protector aspects of Vishnu.

That's actually similar to what I was thinking. Enhanced physical capabilities that would probably be akin to a low-level martial brick (30 STR, 25 DEX, 6-7 SPD...give or take), with some mental defense, awareness and possibly Dispel mental powers kinda thing to represent Shiva's third eye. And maybe a few other minor things as they occur to me. I want the powers to be a natural extension of his learning, though, which is why I was having such a tough time narrowing down the concept until I started learning more about Hinduism in general. Now I just want the proper flavor for the character.

  2. Re: Hindu-themed hero

If I may make one more suggestion, probably obvious:

Don't let religion be the only defining trait of the character. "The Futurist" may be a Southern Baptist, but he needs to bring more than that to the table to be memorable. Similarly, Avinashi Chopra may be a pious Hindu woman and the practitioner of a traditional martial art, but to me it's her political side and strugle with the boundaries of her own culture that makes her an interesting villainess.

I'm more open-minded about where the character will lead to now than when I started. I do want to capture the essence of Hinduism within the character, however, and I'd prefer to have that reflected in powers and abilities. However, ultimately I'm going to let the character define itself. They tend to do that once I get started on 'em anyway.

Thanks for your (and everyone's) input.

  3. Re: Hindu-themed hero

And there are three more fully written up in Champions Worldwide; but I get the impression than Vanguard00 would like a rationale for creating his own original characters.

Pretty much. I try and be original when I can, using other write-ups for inspiration only when knowledge fails me. I'm still doing a bit of research in order to ensure I get the proper feel for Hinduism. The powers of the character might not reflect any one deity or aspect, after all, but after delving into all the info the internet can provide I'm more interested in the background and personality of the character at the moment. I think I'm going to let the powers come from that rather than try and force a power structure first.

Again, thanks to all for your input. It's been helpful in narrowing down what I need to know and which directions I should be looking in.

  4. Re: Clever use of illusion spell

Illusions I've used in a variety of games over the years, some of which have been mentioned:

The illusion of safe terrain hiding chasms, ditches, rocks, etc. This works well when you're being charged.

The illusion of unsafe terrain so that the enemy has to go around.

The illusion of more men on your side; filling out the ranks, so to speak.

The illusion of a single person/thing guaranteed to put at least a little fear into your opponent (a noted knight, archers, a captive monster, etc)

Distracting illusions - attractive women, lost children, various sights and sounds designed to do nothing but cause the target to turn their head for a phase/round or two.

The illusion of a person being knocked out or killed in combat when in reality they aren't. The bad guy moves to the next target, essentially turning his back to the person he thought he'd just killed. Used a couple of time to good effect.

Illusion to hide or exaggerate wounds, depending on what's needed.

Illusion to hide or exaggerate the quality of goods or animals, to affect price (or, in one case, to avoid theft).

Illusion for purely entertainment purposes, especially in accompaniment of a song or tale (acting out the story as it unfolds). Can be used to acquire sleeping quarters, free meals, etc.

Just off the top o' my head...

  5. Re: Introducing Scott Free Press!

    Reported.

I see nothing wrong with a bit of advertisement for a website. After all, he ties it in nicely with the following...

"That's all good and fine Kev, but I play Champions. Why should I care about this?"

Every two weeks we’ll be profiling a character, complete with background and full-colour portrait, on our website for use in your superpowered campaigns. In addition, every two months we’ll be posting a new Country Brief, giving GMs and Players a crash course in the politics and society of another country. In addition to useful information like history, languages spoken, maps and flags, these briefs give a rundown of major issues facing the country (for use as inspiration for your own campaigns) and a list of resources you can access for further information. While the character stats are not presented in Hero stats, the background, adventure ideas, Country Briefs and character pics are usable in any superpowered campaign!

  6. Re: Some thoughts on River Tam (Firefly)

Watching Buffy' date=' it is obvious that Geller hasn't had a day of actual martial training in any form (even in season 6 she punches with a "broken" wrist).[/quote']

FYI, Gellar took five years of Tae Kwon Do and has had a smattering of formal kickboxing, boxing, street fighting and gymnastics training.

One of the things that I assumed about River in regards to her performance in Serenity, there was a part of her that was disengaged. She wasn't holding back in any way. I think there's a big difference between someone who's conscious of what they're doing and someone who just does it. Even trained martial artists sometimes react out of instinct and hurt someone more than they intended. Imagine being able to command that sort of power and lack-of-restraint at will. Between that and her training I had no problem seeing River kick buttocks.

  7. Not knowing much about the Hindu religion as a whole (except what I gleaned from encyclopedias and a couple of random websites), how would one go about making a character who, through mutation or mysticism, seems to possess certain key aspects of the Hindu gods?

For example, let's say our hero goes all Shiva on you...what does he do, sprout arms and sends an autofire EB (representing destruction)? Or if he goes Vishnu (the preserver) what would he do? How 'bout Brahma? Should I incorporate other deities, or stay with the Trimurti concept of these three as the main deities?

By the way, I'm thinking mysticism more in line with what might be in the UMA, or just powers from FREd, rather than actual mage-like spells and such. A bit of concentration or something and whammo! Basic background for the character is a young man who first manifested his abilities as a teenager and honestly believes he has been blessed with the power of the gods as part of some karmic incarnation or ascension to a new level of being, or some such (obviously I'm having issues putting that part together, too).

Anyway, any ideas y'all might have would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

  8. Re: Some thoughts on River Tam (Firefly)

He was in Full Metal Jacket. That's his only really major film credit.

Bah! Can you not remember My Bodyguard? A great film of my youth!

Okay, yeah, it was kinda cheesy, but Adam Baldwin made an impression on me even then.

EDIT: Forgot to add that, sequel or not, I'm happy they made Serenity. Anything that might come after is just bonus, but that story needed to be told.

  9. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I woke up from a nap this afternoon with an ache. It wasn't a physical ache, but more of an emotional one. As if something had been taken away, I guess. I know I dreamed, but I couldn't tell you of what. All I know is that something or (more likely) someone in my dream made me feel such that when I awoke I felt I was missing something.

It kinda put a damper on the whole day.
