  1. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat

NT: The most important words ever spoken...

...were uttered by a little old man of Lithuanian descent while gardening at his home in Deluth, Iowa, at the precise moment that his granddaughter, who was visiting at the time (she was always good about such things; her and her parents had never been close and she'd been raised by her maternal grandfather as much as anyone, and truth be known she thought of him more as a father than a grandfather, and even though she had two kids of her own she always made time to come and visit and do some gardening, because the little old man dearly loved his garden, with azaleas and roses along one side and a row of tomatoes overlooking cabbage and carrots, and two apple trees tucked into the corner of the yard to give a bit of shade when needed, at that hot part of the day when the sun is just at the perfect angle and seems to be looking down on you and you alone; but she really did enjoy the visits as it gave her time away from the kids and the hubub of the big city--she had moved to Sioux City some three years prior to be closer to husband George's work (which no one really knew what that was; something to do with markets and theories and projects--sounded like grown men playing pretend or guessing games, if you asked me, but no one did) and she enjoyed a few hours in her grandfather's garden now and again; she hoped she could bring the kids in the future), sneezed, and so didn't hear the words uttered into the spring air. The little old man of Lithuanian descent shrugged and smiled and went back to his gardening.

  2. Re: Supervillain Psych Lims: The Reboot

Hannibal Lector is "Irredeemably Evil". He can be a perfect gentleman, cultured even, but he'll turn on you eventually. He'll always turn on you.

Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) from "Reservoir Dogs" is a "Casual Killer" (with a "bloodlust" Psych Lim, to boot). He doesn't have to kill everyone around him and can actually get along with folks much of the time. But he'll easily find reasons to pop you in the head with a .45. And if he has time, a little gratuitous torture wouldn't go amiss. It's not that he likes killing, it's just that there isn't much he likes better.

  3. Re: Anyone else...

Tell me that ain't a plot waitin' to happen...Mechanon secretly getting his hands on Intel chips and sending them out to the world, only to activate them and do his nefarious bidding. He could crash major systems that way, or have access to huge bajillobits of data that he didn't have before.

See? The possibilities are as endless as Service Packs....

  4. Re: Musings on Random Musings

To the bachelors w/o girlfriends of the NGD -- happy platonic-romance day.

On a related note, this email was sent to me today:

NEW NATIONAL HOLIDAY SWEEPING THE NATION!!!!

Every 14th of February you get the chance to display your fondness for your wife or girlfriend by showering her with gifts, flowers, dinner, shows and any other baubles that women find romantic.

Secret...guys feel left out. That's right...left out. There's no special holiday for the ladies to show their appreciation for the men in their life. Men as a whole are either too proud or just too embarrassed to admit it. Which is why a new holiday has been created.

March 20th is now officially "Steak & Blowjob Day."

Simple, effective and self-explanatory...this holiday has been created so your ladies can have a day to show your man just how much you love him. No cards, no flowers, no special nights on the town-the name of the holiday explains it all...just a steak and a BJ. That's it. This twin pairing of Valentine's Day and Steak & BJ Day will usher in a new age of love as men everywhere will try THAT much harder in February to ensure a more memorable March! It's like a perpetual love machine.

The word is already spreading, but as with any new idea, it needs a little push to start the ball rolling. So spread the word, and help bring love and peace to this crazy world.

For the record, I have a girlfriend, but I'm all for this...

  5. Re: Musings on Random Musings

Of course if they'd used their employee resources more efficiently in the first place, you might never have felt the need to look elsewhere.

As I often say, if companies were really greedy, they wouldn't be so cheap.

I would still have to look for a job. The Project Executive who came on-site last year managed to screw up a contract we'd held for 8 years. We got ousted from our cushy jobs for the exact reasons I stated: mismanagement of resources, management's denial of existing problems, and lack of courtesy or respect for those you work with/for and who work with/for you.

We had the contract in the bag, but right before signing management stuck on a $2 million clause that screwed us, so off we go.

IBM's cool in that they pay well, have good benefits, and have a pretty decent severence package, but their management ethics suck big donkey dick.

  6. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

This is my last night at work. I'm still gonna be paid while looking for a job, at least for the next 60 days, but this is my last shift here.

    In theory.

Seems management has decided that I and a couple of others can go through 25+ boxes of software, licenses and manuals and enter them into a library database. Manually. It's estimated to be a 3-week job.

    Three things about this suck:

    1) Last minute crap like this is hella annoying and way too frelling common.

    2) There are half a dozen people who will be leaving and looking for jobs. Six people in the same boat as me, and only three of us were picked to do this job. Three of us doing this for three weeks or six of us doing this for about a week or so. Hmm...

    3) I really wanted out. Really. I mean, words can't accurately convey the sense of relief I had knowing that I was out of this place, away from these people. To have that illusion shattered at the last minute is like a kick in the groin. It's...well, if you don't know the feeling I can't describe it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the work. I'm on their payroll, after all, so they might as well get some use out of me while I'm casting about for future employment.

But had I known about this months ago we could be done by now. This is pure logistical horse-hockey on their part, a denial that the project even existed. That is, until faced with the reality of cleaning up their (i.e. management's) mess. Then it's sluffed onto us, the peons. It's annoying because there's not even a nod of courtesy or respect in the delivery of the task, in the method chosen to handle this chore, or the consideration of the people who must suddenly revise their immediate plans. It's bullshlock.

It's the difference between having time to take classes and build some skills and doing menial work that qualifies for minimum wage anywhere else. It eats up any time I might've had to try and get a better job. It eats up my time, and that just annoys the hell outta me.

  7. Re: Teleport to nearest X?

I'd probably just buy TP (with megascale?), one floating fixed location, with the limitation (only to the nearest church within range, -1/2).

    Something like:

17 Teleportation 10", Megascale (1" = 1km; +1/4)(25 Active Points); Limited Power Only to nearest church in range (-1/2)

5 Teleportation: Floating Fixed Location (1 Locations)

  8. Re: What skill would you use to see if someone is lying?

Skill-vs-skill roll for the appropriate Interaction Skill as suggested above, and use that as a complimentary roll to your PER roll.

Making your PER roll means you think the person is lying (if they are) or telling the truth (if they are). Failing your PER roll means you think the person is telling the truth (if they aren't) or they're lying (if they aren't).
