Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore Just took a batch of these out of the oven. Probably my favorite cookie these days. Rugelach (Rougarts) 8 oz cream cheese at room temperature ½ lb butter at room temperature ¼ cup sugar ¼ tsp kosher salt 1 tsp vanilla 2 cups flour Filling: 6 Tablespoons sugar ¼ cup light brown sugar 1 ½ tsp cinnamon ¾ cup raisins 1 cup walnuts finely chopped ½ cup apricot preserves or jam(any preserve or jam will do) Cream the cream cheese and butter. Add the sugar salt and vanilla and then the flour. Divide dough into 4 pieces, wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. Mix all filling ingredient except the jam. On a well floured board, roll out a ball of dough into a 9 inch circle. Spread with 2 Tablespoons of jam and sprinkle with ½ cup of the filling. Cut the circle into 12 wedges (a pizza cutter is the best tool for this). Starting with the wide edge, roll up each wedge into a crescent. Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silpat. Repeat with remaining dough. Make an egg wash from I egg beaten with 1 Tablespoon milk. Brush each cookie with a little egg wash. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar (3 Tablespoons sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon). Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes. Alternate Filling: ½ lb ground walnuts ¾ cup sugar 1 egg 1 Tablespoon cream or milk

Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Dead Snow. Nazi zombies. Can you get more evil? Pretty much a straight-up zombie flick. Nothing ground (snow?) breaking, but worth watching.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. Some of the visuals, setting, and moods were stunning, but overall it was too overtly preachy, and some of the effects were a little jarring.

I wouldn't do it to a credit card I cared about, but it would be fun to do to gift cards to music stores. Nobody on my gift-giving list plays guitar, or I'd have to buy one of those, such a neat idea.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently? OK, watched the remake last night. Besides the title, the movies were completely different. OK, that's a slight exaggeration, but I'm finding it hard to compare them. The original has a lot more character development and interaction. I feel that I get to know them, and care what happens. In the remake, it's just "I wonder who gets killed next" Even the type of horror is different: "Something out there is trying to kill us" vs. "One of us is the monster" The original (like most classic horror/sci-fi) has a message and a morale. The remake just tells us that if you see a Norwegian shooting at a dog from a helicopter, grab the flamethrower first and ask questions later. I think modern horror relies more on special effects to shock and startle viewers. Classic horror made guys in cheesy rubber suits scare the pants off of us just using light and cinamatography. Watching both back-to-back I thought of a similarity to Alien and Aliens. Superficially both seem to be the same kind of movie, but in reality one is a suspense/horror and the other an action/adventure movie. If I had to choose which one I liked better, I'd lean towards the original. It's almost at the comparing apple to oranges level, I just happen to prefer apples.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently? The Thing From Another World. The 1951 original, not the 80's remake or the now showing new one. Classic horror,well worth seeing. I'll probably watch the Carpenter version tomorrow (I can get that streaming, had to wait for the disk for the classic)

It's unhealthy enough to warrant posting in this thread, and those of you who haven't spent time in Louisville might be unfamiliar with this classic dish: Hot Brown 4 Tablespoons butter 4 Tablespoons flour 3 cups whole milk salt and pepper to taste 1 pinch nutmeg ½ cup parmesan cheese (or a combination of parmesan and swiss) ¼ cup grated cheddar for top 6 pieces lightly toasted good quality white bread buttered on one side white turkey meat, sliced (about 1 ½ lbs) 6-8 slices bacon, cooked, but slightly underdone sliced tomato or halved cherry tomatoes Melt butter on low heat, add flour and cook until flour is fully incorporated. Heat milk and add to butter/flour mixture. Bring to boil, stirring as sauce thickens. Add pepper, salt, and nutmeg. Remove from heat and add cheese, stirring until cheese is melted. Place toast buttered side down on an ovenproof plate or platter. On the toast, place slices of white turkey meat and pour sauce over the turkey. Top with some bacon and with slice of tomato. Sprinkle lightly with cheese. Bake @450 degrees until slightly brown. This is a famous Louisville dish. It is a good way to use leftover turkey. If you cut the bread, bacon, and turkey into small pieces (use halved cherry tomatoes) and arrange this in a casserole, it makes a good brunch dish or a light dinner for a crowd. Heat casserole at 375 until bubbly.

Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. While my friends and I were gaming, The Wife and Boy were watching Curious George. At one point we hear upset crying from the room they were watching it. The next time someone goes upstairs they bring back a report that The Boy was upset about some of the content. Friend 1: "What could he have a problem with? It doesn't get much more family-friendly then Curious George?" Friend 2: "What would it take to make George not kid friendly?" Me: "Curious George visits the meth factory or Bi-Curious George? Friend 1: (amongst the laughter) You're just wrong... (Turns out that in the movie, they alter George's origin story, and the Man with the yellow hat starts out trying to get rid of George and is not his best friend, which upset The Boy)
