  1. Re: Players not rolling or recording damage worked well the one D&D game I tried it. Rather, I used the UA of "I know your hitpoints" and let them roll their damage normally. Laz
  2. Re: HTB: Wand of Wonder Also, I'm not a Number Cruncher at work, and so some of my math fun comes from my games. Laz
  3. Re: Hitting Versus Damage Alternity had a nice way of dealing with this - Marginal, Ordinary, Good, Awesome (MOGA). Basically, each type of success did something better than the last. Marginal is also failure. Ordinary is just under the target. Good is under half. Awesome is under a quarter. This could probably be easily applied to HERO. Laz
  4. Re: What is old is new again? drat! One more book out, one more book I want. Actually, interestingly enough, the Champions books are the ones I'm not too interested in... Laz
  5. Re: HTB: Wand of Wonder that's awesome Kraven. When I get 5ER, I'll read up more on the VPP stuff. Until then, I'd probably just "fake it" as a list of powers, built within 50 AP or something. When I finally get the book, I'd stat it out proper. Now, of course, this is all academic, as I have no FH group Laz
  6. Re: HTB: Wand of Wonder Few things I don't know about that (I've only got Sidekick): VPP allows variable active points, up to the amount of cap it has? Cosmic means what? The skill is what? NCC is an acronym I don't recognize. Side effects probably should be higher, right? Actually, I'd want to build this as a list of effects, with the random one getting applied, a la D&D, as a GM tool. Laz
  7. How would you build a Wand of Wonder? Basically, a pile of effects, with a random effect chosen at activation. The first step would be the list of powers, which I'd do as an EC, I think. But, then, how to determine the power at game-time? Laz
  8. Re: FH Grimoire 2: Who has it? I could have picked it up last weekend... but I decided against it. I've really got no budget for game books, and it's nearly run down already Plus, I'd prefer to have the first one or the Bestiary first. Laz
  9. Re: Banned and the Banished, and the Black Jewels Mostly, for that world, a list of creatures and writeups would be necessary. It seemed mostly to be a High Fantasy vibe, with a few setting-specific twists, but overall, humans can do pretty much all. The Renewing and Blood Magic might need a bit of work to set up. Laz
  10. Re: Building Dementors Perhaps a STUN-Only attack? Laz
  11. Re: d20 Conversion killershrike.com ... Everything's there Laz
  12. Re: Banned and the Banished, and the Black Jewels That's not exactly how the Jewels act. It's more that they have a VPP of their own specific level (depending on their caste - that's the Warlord/Prince/Warlord Prince thing) with an END pool for each of their Jewels, plus one for their own Innate Strength. In fact, possibly have a VPP of 10 / caste level? (I only have Sidekick, so I'm not too up on the VPPs), with an END pool of 15/colour level. (once again, not good with the END pools either). That would probably be a better model. Plus have a Vanishing power - EDM, only on objects, only to/from Personal Stash. Laz
  13. I'm thinking that I'd like to play a game set in either of those two worlds. However, there's creatures and powers that I'd need help writing up. I'd also need help in detailing the world and adventures, etc. So, anyone else read either or both of the Banned and the Banished (James Clemens) or the Black Jewels (Anne Bishop)? Laz
  14. Re: More questions One of the things in mind is that HERO is often described as a "meta-system" ... that is, as it is in FREd and Sidekick is only the base - for your game, you'll probably need to allow/disallow some things, and have some Required Restrictions on some stuff (ex: magic), and so on. Tri-Stat dX is like that to an extent, but it doesn't ever bill itself as a metasystem, but as an actual system that doesn't need any campaign-specific restrictions on top. Laz
  15. Re: Requires a Skill Roll I'd say no, as failing the required activation or skill roll would mean that you blundered it up. Laz
  16. Re: Caffeine Addiction psych or phys drawback: addiction (caffeine)... unless there's an addiction drawback. Then just use that.
  17. Re: Questions about Hero from a DnD GM Get Sidekick for now. It's a good investment, almost all you need, 10 USD. The other books are recommended, as the genre books describe how to emulate the style in the HERO system, and the construct books prebuild things for you. But all you need to run HERO is Sidekick. The main learning curve is figuring out how to build characters. At that, it's mostly just wrapping your mind around the "build the game effects". Laz
  18. Re: What do you think is the best way to balance armor use? Quick way to do it: -1 SPD for every 5 Armour defence. You'll find they don't bulk up on armour too much edit: don't forget to give them the points for that lim, though. Laz
  19. Re: Hero Needs Reviewers!! I was intending on reviewing Sidekick at some point (if I hadn't already). I suppose the comp copy spots have already filled up on Dark Champions? Oh well, I'll just review Sidekick and FH when I get it, and 5ER when it comes out, and hopefully get on the comp copy list for something Laz
  20. Re: Power Question In order to sculpt the trees into dwellings, that would likely take some ... not quite Major transform, but I think more than Minor? Laz
  21. Re: Begginner Question Charges being rechargable act like clips, or arrows. After each combat you get them back. This is for an endless ammo world. For a non-endless ammo world, put in a lim on the Charges, only recovers when x$ paid for ammo (+1/4) ... (lim on a lim is double negative, so positive?) ... also, for clips, step down one lim level and double the clips. For example (Sidekick, 68): "Normally a character who has 8 Charges gets a -1/2 value for the Limitation. If he reduces the value one step down the table (to -1/4), he can have two clips, each with 8 Charges". Laz
  22. Re: Begginner Question Thanks for all those KS. Laz
  23. Re: Begginner Question oo! Thanks! Laz will be getting a start on his game soon ... it may look vaguely like Gamma World ...
  24. Re: Begginner Question Thanks you two. Yeah, the Treasure Trove is the one I stumbled upon recently, although I thought there was some other one with a massive amount of creatures (that went AWOL on me ). Also useful is the Ultimate Spellbook or somesuch - I don't have the link right now, but a google will get it. It's a bunch of premade spells. Yes, KS, I realize how easy it is to create creatures, but I just want a generic Orc! Laz
