Re: Conspiracy Theory: Who was really behind the destruction of Detroit?
Like many a newborn, you've snipped me before I could really get started.
Not really. Just because something is in the official books doesn't mean you can't come up with your own take. Let the speculation continue.

Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread
Got a good deal on the flight home to visit family and friends over the holidays. I thought I was out of luck because I waited too long, but no.
Decided to stop by a local Best Buy to view the post-Black Friday carnage. Bought the 5th season of Doctor Who and the old Flash live-action series on DVD as the sale prices for both were substantial.

Re: The cranky thread
Dear tourists,
Welcome to our fair city. There's a lot to see and do here, and I hope you enjoy yourselves.
It can be a little confusing getting around, though. It's understandable that sometimes when you come across an escalator, elevator, or stairwell that you might not be sure if that's the way you need to go.
The place to make that decision, however, is *not* directly in front of said means of access. Please, if you aren't sure, kindly step aside and let those of us who know where they're going get by. Because some of us are getting to the point where we're just going to go through you, and none of us really want this.
Thank you,
A Local

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?
Men In Suits, a documentary about suit actors (think the guy in the Godzilla outfit) that I helped Kickstart. Very informative overall, and I have to admit to enjoying seeing my name in the end credits.

Aaaand it looks like my Thanksgiving Dinner will be coming from a drive-thru. *sigh*Mine will be a couple of turkey subs from Subway. Business as usual.
Also, my condolences as well, Puma.

Re: The Good and Bad about Marvel and DC
I thought he didn't like Watchmen anymore because people interpret it differently than he intended and don't take away the message they are "supposed to". He commented once that he was horrified when people started writing to him telling him how much they loved Rorschach.I know several people who think he's the only sensible character in the book. Once the work gets out there, you can't really control how its perceived.
I liked Watchmen.I still do. Not the be-all and end-all of comics for me, but it still holds up as a read.

Re: Cool characters from goofy concepts
But did he go through goofy periods because of creative problems or did he go through goofy periods because he's inherently goofy?IMO, it would be the former. As much as I like them, the "monster of the week" or "wacky transformation" years of the '50s and '60s are pretty goofy.
I read once that' date=' on the set of the first Tim Burton Batman movie, Michael Keeton (in full Batman regalia) turned to Jack Nicholson (dressed as the Joker) and said, "You realize we're adults, right?" They both had a good laugh.[/quote']I read that too. I think it's pretty funny. It doesn't really apply to Batman alone, but costumed heroes and villains in general, all of whom have an element of silliness when you get down to it.

Yesterday I walked my eldest daughter down the aisle as she married a young man that was already like a son to me. It was a very good day. That's wonderful. My congrats to all involved.

Re: Cool characters from goofy concepts
Batman. Seriously.A hero named after a flying rodent. Fights crime dressed like a giant bat. Can't fly like a bat, but swings on a rope. Uses bat-shaped boomerangs as weapons. Rides around in a "Batmobile." Routinely brings his underaged sidekick into dangerous situations. No super-powers, but hangs with some of the mightiest heroes on the planet.
But of course, today the Batman is the epitome of comic-book cool, thanks to generations of character evolution and public acclimatization to his goofier elements.
I see the point, but I'd wager that Bats was considered cool from the outset, given his pulp roots and his overall popularity and influence. He's certainly gone through goofy periods, though.

Re: Cool characters from goofy concepts
has anyone thought of the inferior5?Not lately. Good call, though I can't imagine them ever being called "cool".

Re: Wish List: Other Licensed Content
A Godzilla license probably isn't realistically feasible. Toho charges a large sum to license the Big Guy(they've been screwed in the past) and they only license Godzilla himself. To license any other Toho monsters' date=' you have to pay extra....with the more popular monsters costing more. That said...from a purely wish list perspective...it'd be very cool.[/quote']Very cool indeed.
With the movie reboot coming, the time would be right, but probably not feasible for the reasons you list.
I'd love a game set in the '60s/'70s Japanese version of the future - something with a real Mysterians/Ultraman/Kamen Rider etc. vibe, but I don't know if anything like that would sell and you would certainly need players who "get it".

Re: In Progress From Blackwyrm Games: Mythic America
To be fair, the whole thing was taking place in the minds of Kirk, Spock and the others. It was a massive illusion forced on them by the Melkotians and based upon their knowledge of the event--it wasn't like they were transported to that time and place. The fact that it was an illusion makes it forgivable that the details were skimpy and/or vague, and it also made it possible for them to beat the gunfight by "disbelieving" the illusion.Hope that helps.
That's very much reflected in the staging, where the incomplete sets lend a stark and creepy vibe that works really well.
But at least some of the crew are versed in what actually happened, even though it's true that they couldn't fill in details of the setting since they weren't there. But the crew seem to know enough about it that the Melkotians could have reproduced the order of events. Kirk knows enough about it to provide each of the crew with the name of their Clanton-gang analogue. Spock knows enough about it to understand that what happens to Chekov is a game-changer. But they deliberately threw out another major detail - probably to heighten dramatic tension - and that's annoying to me when dealing with historical stuff. Even illusionary historical stuff.
Mind you, it's far from the worst offender. I once saw a made for TV movie that reduced the gunfight to about a five second shootout and actually added to the body count.

For those keeping track at home' date=' October 26, 2012 was the 131st anniversary of the Gunfight at the OK Corral. I plan to give a description of the fight and what it was about on Wild Bill Hickok's page.[/quote']I look forward to this, especially since so many pop culture sources get it so wrong.
