1. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread. I'm going to have to show HeartGirl to my 9 year old. That's awesome. Reminds me of an old thread... from the mouth of babes or some-such... but this time from the page of... hehe.
2. Re: Cool Guns for your Games No biggie. I always find people who are arrogant for no good reason to be even more annoying than the arrogant who at least have a reason. =) Personally, I'd love to work the tech side of that sort of thing. It sounds like fun. I love watching the parts where they build all the stuff that goes into movies. If I had a chance, I'd love to go into prop-work or something of that sort... but then, that would probably require more talent than I likely have.
3. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Well, I've never worked in hollywood, and I was being very general and regarding that particular segment specifically versus show business as a whole. California + big movie business and all that... =) So, really, its kind of a prejudice on my part garnered from watching movies, occasional interviews, crap on the internet, etc... and, and idiots like DeNiro who like to bash guns during his time off, but make a ton of money wielding them in his movies.
4. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I don't think it would work at all. Firstly, they didn't even bother to make it from an actual working gun. Its black because it looks like it was milled from a hunk of plastic. It doesn't have a slide unless you count just the rear block as the slide, the shape is wrong for a desert eagle anyway, and that would require a pretty light round. The slide itself isn't even attached to the slide, it seems like, and as mentioned.. it has nowhere from which to load new ammunition. It might be a ray-gun, I suppose. I love the forward cocking serrations on the possible frame rather than on anything that can move, and the lack of any sights, and the fact that it looks like a vaguely glued on block holds the two upper portions together while being out of line and having a gap. Having said all that... I DO realize its just a silly movie prop to what looks like a crappy movie with decent film stock or whatever they call the digital version thereof in it... putting it into the likely B or maybe B+ budget range. I'd still personally smack the guy who built that piece of junk if it were my movie, but they were probably concentrating on the plot and acting... :lol
5. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I bought a CZ SP-01 because it had some modern features and hi-power ergonomics. I just wanted the rail, the night sites, and a double-action trigger for just-in-case for work type requirements. Plus, it has that funny "tactical block w/ bayonet" option that makes me laugh. I may have to buy one just for the laughs. Too bad it also has that crappy thumb safety that I also want to replace, just as if I had a hi-power. =) Oh, and a pic... cuz I hadn't seen one of these in awhile:
6. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Hi-Powers are always great. I like a lot of the classics. This particular pistol still has quite the loyal following to this day, and while not as popular as the 1911, it still has a lot of major adherents including Cylinder and Slide and a lot of custom gun makers. There are even new matched frame and slide kits to add some custom features for you to smith on yourself or have one done up by a gunsmith for you. And, just so I don't have to personally post all these pics... here's a link to a 1911 forum with a hi-power picture thread. =) http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=132387&highlight=browning+hi-power Enjoy!
7. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Oh, I see what you mean... you want the link to the site that has it. A quick google search revealed: http://www.max-11.com/ for the company in general, and http://www.max-11.com/TopSecret.html for the gun project itself.
8. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Previous page, M40A1.
9. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Wow... nerd boner. Gotta spread rep... *sigh*
10. Re: Query's Art & Stuff Thread
11. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I also find them aesthetically unpleasant, but still find them leagues better looking than a Glock, Hi-Point, or Taurus tupperware. One of the Rugers look okay. As a whole, I don't like the looks of "tactical tupperware" as a whole.
12. Re: Sx help: Name that pistol! The use of frangible ammo is mostly for range use, not duty use. Duty use ammunition is usually limited to FMJ (full metal jacket) or JHP (jacketed hollow-point). FMJ is seeing a lot less use due to over-penetration in many situations. Frangible ammunition has a bad reputation, due to much of its advertising, as creating "horrific" wounds. Just check out some of the "Extreme Shock" and other ammunition advertised by Blackhawk. Also, as zero-point mentioned, its lack of penetration becomes a liability when dealing with vehicles, barriers and otherwise. In essence, its a very poor choice of ammunition for a large variety of situations. The only people I've heard of that even possibly use frangible ammunition on a regular basis are air marshals, and even that is rare as frangible ammunition also has a relatively poor reputation for accuracy, noise, and muzzle flash due to the light-weight, high velocity nature of the rounds. Hollow-points have pretty much been the good all-around standard for a long time and will likely remain so for the foreseen future. At best, it expands to greater than original size and dumps its full energy into a target and stays there. At worst, it stays the same size and still hits the target. Awesome. Sorry it took as long as it did. =)
13. Re: Sx help: Name that pistol! One that is actually pretty common in police departments and fitting your parameters is a Smith & Wesson 625. You can find plenty of examples in varying styles from the Smith and Wesson Website. The link is for the 625 through their search. A newer revolver becoming popular and marketed to police departments is the Smith and Wesson 325 and its variants which is unique in that it comes with a black matte finish and is fitted with a rail system to attach modern lights and lasers to. Colt hasn't made a .45 ACP revolver since 1917 or so, Ruger and Taurus don't them. In fact, S&W is the only company that routinely has them available that I'm aware of. The problem here is that departments heavily frown on rounds like the .44 Magnum, which has a terrible reputation with the ignorant media. Any non-standard round like the .460 Rowland and others like it are also frowned upon since they aren't standard, and as high powered versions of other cartridges, will be labeled as excessive and otherwise. Thanks to the morons that run the majority of news shows and television in general, the "facts" about firearms have been so obscured by idiotic platitudes that those types of rounds are avoided like the plague by the majority of police departments. Too many "Dirty Harry" references would be inferred with the .44 Magnum, and the .460 Rowland will be seen the same. Putting a compensator on a 1911 would be the price point of a typical pistol beyond that of your average cop and would also make it very distinctive gun that is difficult to find a holster for. Try find a duty holster for any 6" pistol, and your choices will be very limited, much less finding one that your department approves of. Similarly, the Desert Eagle is not only terrible image-wise, its size is a limiting factor meaning that not very many officers would be able to hold it. That pistol is a definite two-hander on grip size, which makes it difficult to do a lot of things... its also mostly looked at as a ridiculous firearm anyway by most professionals due to its unfortunate reputation and use mostly as a movie gun and a overcompensation gun. This is no knock on the Desert Eagle, its just its reputation, and its poor hand fit for most people, that makes this a very rare choice. Its size and weight also makes it border-line for the utility role of a handgun in any case, which is mostly light weight and portability. =)
14. Re: Sx help: Name that pistol! I'm sorry, I always get caught up in my own little gun world when I start talking about them. For this, I apologize. Let me make this more clear and lay off the tangents some. Standard Issue is dependent on the individual police department. Many of them no longer issue you a weapon. Chicago PD is a good example. They provide you with a list of weapons that you are allowed to purchase for duty use. Other departments will actually issue you a weapon, assigning you a department purchased pistol for you to use. This weapon varies widely from department to department. What you are describing is a 2d6RKA w/ 4 clips of 6 charges. According to Dark Champions, the only calibers that do 2d6 RKA are: .44 Magnum, .223 Remington, .45 Winchester Magnum, and .45 ACP if from Glock or H&K. Of those calibers, the only one that any police department will issue you in a pistol is the .45 ACP. I have NO idea why that damage value is only assigned to Glocks and H&K's for that caliber. Glocks are standard issue at many departments. H&Ks are uncommon. So that takes the H&K out of the picture. Of those pistols, Glocks or H&Ks, no full or even compact pistol only holds 6 rounds. In effect, no real world duty issue side-arm has the stats you are looking for that I am aware of except for a revolver, which is also uncommon as an issued weapon in the context of what is issued across the country. However, in some individual departments, revolvers still are the issued weapon. Thus they would not be uncommon in that department. Also, having a revolver wouldn't necessarily really make it distinctive in any given department. And, in the end, its the closest thing to what you're asking for. Anything else that had those parameters would NOT be standard issue. Thus the difficulty of the question and also the answer. The most popular police issue weapons are 9mm and .40 S&W, with the most common models being Glocks, S&W, and Springfield Armory XDs. None of these fit your parameters. These are all listed as 1d6+1 or 1d6+2. Capacities range from 12 to 20 rounds. I tried to be clear and not get technical. My apologies if I failed.
15. Re: Sx help: Name that pistol! Well, all in all, I think someone else posted the most correct answer to this... a revolver. Not too many departments issue them anymore, but not many of them disallow them either. A lot of revolvers are still in use, especially by older cops, and are very common as back-up weapons either as a second gun or as a gun he has in case his main weapon is not working for some reason. A lot of departments are requiring their officers to buy their own pistols these days as well, simply giving a list of officially acceptable weapons or at least parameters under which they must fall. I looked it up on a few forums and such, and it appears that they are still being used by some officers and are still on the lists of approved firearms but are optional. Police have moved away from revolvers as a whole for a couple of simple reasons... capacity, training, and weight. More rounds, less training, and less weight with most autos nowadays. Still, some old dogs still prefer 'em, and the occasional youngster from what I hear. I still think they are a perfectly viable firearm (I have several) but require an officer be a bit more competent with their sidearm. I think the S&W 625 or similar would suit your purposes well, being .45 ACP and thus in your damage range. For some retarded reason, .45 ACP is 2d6-1 in some pistols but 2d6 in others.... apparently by whim, since the +1 DC upgrade required from one gun to the next is usually double to quadruple the amount of power, somehow an extra .1% increase in velocity from a polygonal barrel somehow equates to 2-4x the power in the cartridge. (personal pet peeve about the last Dark Champions book, hopefully the new one isn't as stupid about firearms.) *sigh* But, on top of that and more importantly, .45 ACP is still acceptable to a lot of departments while .44 magnum or such is not. =)
16. Re: Cool Guns for your Games The way I hear it, their warranty applies if you can get them to answer the phone and actually believe you... and it takes forever to come back. I don't have any personal experience, so it could just be bitter internet people going out of their way to bad-mouth 'em. *shrug* I've head it both ways. I only have experience with Springfield Armory and Smith and Wesson is regards to customer service, and both of them were great. S&W sent me a part I lost (compensator tip to my revolver) for free, and Springfield Armory straightened out a minor issue for me and re-did the sights on a friend's gun by replacing the mil-spec sights (one fell out of the dove-tail) and replaced 'em with Novak Night Sights. The judges just strike me as kind of dumb... interesting, but dumb. Make it the proper size and for one or the other, not both. I might be interested in a .410 shotgun pistol, but not so much if its a Taurus. I guess I'm a bit of a gun snob. *shrug*

18. Re: Supernatural Martial Artists
19. Re: Supernatural Martial Artists I think the whole Ninja mythos has a whole set of symbols (can't remember how many, but less than 12, I think) if you want them to kill a hoard of ninjas. That's always fun. =) Other than the elements, there's always something based off of the "5 Deadly Venoms" like the same-named movie. =) Otherwise, others have given great published sources to base your villains on. I also like the Shaolin animal style ones that Ninja-Bear mentioned. Japanese elements are Fire, Earth, Air (Wind?), Water, and Void aren't they? That would make for an interesting villain team as well. Uh-oh, just noticed there's a page 2... doh.
20. Re: Sx help: Name that pistol! 10mm 1911s are prevalent nowadays. Most major manufacturers make them in 9mm, 10mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP with .38 Super becoming more common. There's also the Bren Ten (Miami Vice guy used one). They come full, commander, and officer sizes depending on company. Heck, Springfield Armory makes a mini-compact 9mm with modified frame for the smaller cartridges. It started as a .45 GAP (slightly shorter .45 ACP somewhat equivalent) and I believe it might also come in .40 S&W now. Sorry to have come late to the party. =)
21. Re: Working Notes for my Campaign Conversion to 6E I gotta say, reading this thread has actually clarified more of what we're trying to do with this game. I've been busy painting my house and some miniatures this weekend, but today I'm by myself with a day off. I'll finally get to playing with Father Martin more today and get it sent to you. =) Nice thread. Before and after sheets might be good. I find RTF format makes it easiest to post.
22. Re: Cool Guns for your Games It always seems a balance of factors, and it just seems ridiculous to me what some people will go through. A light gun to carry for various reasons is one thing, then there's just putting too much cartridge in too light a gun. I think I know which one you're talking about with the 329... scandium framed .44 magnum, right? I fired a few out of one and stopped before it was going to get painful. I shot 2 or 3, found it unpleasant to fire (especially with those hardwood, sharp-edged finger-groove grips that come on some of them) and just told the guy, "Yeah, I can see that as a carry a lot and shoot a little gun... no thanks." I got one of those macho responses and proceeded to flinch and wince through a few cylinders to show me how tough he was. I didn't need the flinch, so I went back to shooting my nice, heavy 629 and dialing in my red dot. =) The trackers sound interesting. .41 magnum sounds interesting. Might have to try them some day. I kind of like Taurus's 92(?) Beretta clone. It has the frame safety instead of mounted on the slide, and it comes in some pretty amusingly gaudy ways. Might be interesting, but I've heard their quality control has gone down quite a bit. Them, Kimber, and Para-ordnance. *sigh*
23. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I've seen those and been curious but have yet to handle or shoot one. Trigger looks long with a bit of an extreme hinge, seems to me. Still, they do make me curious, and they do have metal ones... so it might be a route I go. Someday. After the commander, and maybe a carry comp. =) I agree. Its just the odd caliber thing again. Everything I've read about the .327 Federal has been good, though scarce. The SP101 strikes me as a better fit for the .357 snubbie role than the S&W J-frames. Then again, in this class, I've also considered the Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 Special, the only problem being not a lot of dealers stock it so its hard to check out. Now that's a snubbie I could enjoy, assuming everything else was good. I'm not recoil adverse, but I'm far from a masochist, and a small revolver in .44 special strikes me as about as big as I'd want to go in that platform. The .327 federal strikes me as pretty competent and decently powerful, a nice compromise between .38 special and .357 magnum.. but probably also attainable with .38 +P ammo. I love .357 in a medium to large revolver, have not yet shot one in a small frame revolver.
