Unfortunately, such rudimentary tactics won't work against modern heatseekers, or even the ones available when the movie was released (1983). Modern Sidewinders use the target's heat signature, not just a hotspot. That's why fighters have to both break the missiles current lock AND give them something else to lock on to when they fire flares. If you don't break the lock the missile will ignore the flares and keep coming after you.
