  1. Re: It's Spooky Around here

You know I think you might want to possibly redesign the effect in this way:

A extremely horrific tragedy occured in a area and it imprints on the area where

the event happened. Somehow the event memory gets anchored to a point of

area, and over times it draws slowly negative energy inwhich to feed on and build

strength. After enough time and energy is gathered, the replay begins to happen

more and more and can be triggered by certain events or situations. If any others

also pass away within that region effected by the horrific tragedy, their soul gets

trapped and their energy adds to the "nightmare" effect. Thus one has the replay

of event(s) that triggered the original nightmare, plus the events of any other deaths,

plus the trapped ghost/spirts of those trapped and in torment as well.

Thus this could feed on itself and become quite nasty if never delalt with. Let give

you a example I would use.

Set in a fantasy city, in a boarding house where the main entrance is off a back alley.

One could say that Ghoul crept out of a sewer, and was hidding in the

shadows of the alley. A family was coming home(Mother/Father/daughter/baby

brother), and the creature attacked out of the darkness jumping on the father

and tearing and wripping his chest and throat out..killing him. The mother

screamed in utter fear holding her todler son and the daughter cried and ran

deeper into the dark alley in fear. The Ghoul turned it's gaze on the mother and

lunged at her knocking her to the ground and grabbing the toddler and bitting

the baby in the back of the neck and tearing off its head and eating some of it.

The mother in utter fear managed to grasp a stick and started beating the Ghoul

with the stick, but the Ghoul dropped the baby and grabbed the woman by the

throat and wripped open her chest and tore out her beating heart and started

    eating it.

At about this time a pair of lovers walked out of the boarding house to see what

was happening and the man drew his sword and attacked the Ghoul. It defended

itself and manged the get the upper hand on the man and broke his one arm

then crushed in his jaw and then broke his neck. The woman screamed in fear

and tried to get back into the boarding house and managed to get up the steps

and open the door and was about to pull the door closed when the Ghoul got it's

hand between the door jam and closing door. Having greater strength it wripped

the door out of her hands and grabbed her and dragged her into the alley and

proceeded to wrip and tear at her throat and chest and tore out her heart as

    well and started eating it.

Meanwhile the young girl from the first family had stopped crying and stated

to creep along the dark alley along the wall in the hopes to get out of the

deadend alley. She just had to try and get past the Ghoul, so as she crept

along she stopped almost across from the boarding house steps and Ghoul,

and it looked up as it eat directly at her. It howled and charged at her, and

she ran for the main street to get out of the alleyway screaming for help as

she ran. The ghoul being bigger and faster leaped on her from behind and

knocked her to the ground and began tearing at her back with its extremely

sharp claws and teh girl screamed in utter fear and pain.

At about this time the city watch entered the mouth of the alleyway and say

the Ghoul and let loose with crossbow bolts thudding into the creature. Next

they charged the creature and began to attack it and manged to dispatch it

within time. After the Ghoul was dispatched and cut into peaces, the head of

the watch patrol walked over to the girl and found her still alive but fading fast.

He knew full well he had to kill the girl and cut off her head as well as stab her

threw the heart or she would come back as a Ghoul herself. The girl in her

dieing moments kept crying and asking about her parents and little brother, as

the Watch Patrol captain sliced off her head and then stabbed her through the

heart. As he surved the now dead girl and gore, he reached down and picked

up a little carved wooden symbol the girl had worn about her neck before her

head was cut off. The item had been on a simple leather tie, and was covered

in her blood. The Watch Captain then through the item into the air into the

darkness against one of the walls. He heard it hit but never heard it fall...oh well.

It had hit a small roof and fallen into a small hole left by a missing roof tile,

totally out of sight of anyone.

So that night a (6) people had been killed, a whole family (father, mother, baby

brother, and daugher) and two lovers (man and woman), plus a Ghoul had been

dispatched all in the alley. Now the anchor as you can guess was the girls

necklace and the whole drama would play out from time to time as ghostly

images. In time the alley seem to be darker and scarrier in day or night and

always felt strange and cold. Thus on many a moonless night, the sceens would

replay. It would seem that the some things could trigger it, like once a mugging

in the alley did trigger it. The man that was mugged was killed by the thieves

in the alley as they ran away, and from that point too his spirit became trapped

    there as well.

So as you can see if lets say 20-30yrs goes by, the site cool develope a real

scarry reputation and the many different events could and would feed on each

other making this "nightmare" region if left unchecked a really bad place. Plenty

of room to expand and play off of too.

PS: I wrote this at work so this is not my best effort but you get the point!

  2. Re: T5th give me a break

Being a Old Traveller player myself playing since it first came out (30 yrs now) I have

read their stuff and it isn't all that bad at all really. It is much more on track to the

OT system than T20 Traveller was and Mongoose Traveller has a certain feel and flavor

that many core Traveller players like and are willing to migrate to.

Now I just love ComStars new era 1248 setting and am going to use that, but they

also came up with Traveller Hero as well. I should also point out that they have also

working on another setting and system called Far Avolon whish shows alot of promise,

as well as so does Mongoose Traveller too. I like Hero System very much, but neither

of those systems use it. Most likely I will design my campaign (now 25+ yrs running

set in the Verge subsector) to TH, but I will still obtain the other systems and books

as reference material as well too.

  3. Re: Horror Playtest

    Hello everyone,

Ok for me I enjoy the Horror / Occult side very much and like to use it within

the scope of my games if I can.

Now in my Traveller Hero campaign I am using a "plague" that was like

'Dawn of the Dead' or 'T-Virus from Resident Evil' movies. I am stating that

durring the great Vampire AI attack that infected computer systesm and

basically caused much of the destruction within the 3rd Imperium, that a

extremely leathal Bio Plague was released and spread by the AIs which

created on many worlds a Zombie PAH Hell that spread across space

within the Verge subsector region of the old 3rd Imperium.

So I was wondering if anyone has actually read any of these following

books and could they comment on how much resource material is actually

within them and how useful will they be for ideas and etc to use when

I recreate it using the Hero System in PAH, Traveller Hero, and Fantasy

    Hero all combined?

Here are some books I am thinking about using, but I have never actually

sceen the system or read the books. I am looking at getting the core rules

to better understand the whole system, and then get books that add onto

the abilities of players and zombies and settings. Also both source books

for Zombies in Pure fantasy setting, and SciFi setting as well to better get

the flavor of those settings too. Please have a look at the links and advise:

new movie "I am Legend" this friday for more resorce ideas as well too!

  4. Re: Horror Playtest

I would HOPE that the person that does write it will know at least some Occult

knowledge and add paraNormal pulp fiction into the mix. Any chance that the

writer might have a few idea sessions here on the board so that others might

be able to add to possible ideas???

  5. Re: How do i introduce new plyaer?

The best advice that I might give you is to sit down with each player and work through the character concept with each and everyone of them. I know that might be a bit extreme, BUT the experience and fun of hacking out the character with the player can be fun in it's self. Provide some snacks for you and them and have all the needed books at your finger-tips. Then work out the personality and back story for the players PC and

then start creating their character with them. Try to make it a fun experience, and tell the player some of the other genres that are available for the Hero's System. For me these typr of sessions usually takle like 2-3 hours and I try to do them on off gaming times. Do it prior to the actual game, and even tell the player to consider what they might want to roleplay and why.

When I start a new campaign, I make creating the backstory for a players PC very important because I can build in possible plots and NPCs to take the player in all manner of possible directions at different times if I so choose or the player wants to pursue such matters. Here is a example of a backstory that I have worked with one of my players now for my newly reworked campaign.

Player PC Name: Sir Dolrick Argyleon

Dolrick is the 3th son to Lord Knight Kerum Argyleon of the Jhorgule Council of Knights.

His 1st brother Sir Kyle has just been Knighted, and is do to be married to

Dame Precilla Bourgue (father Knight Phillip Bourgue - their family exports fine wines).

Dolrick's 2nd brother Tyean Argyleon is a Squire to Lord Knight Kalib Kerrigor, and is started to build a rep for being a extremely skilled swordman. Tyean is seeing the daughter (Terria) of a rich Import/Export merchant familly of Rellenar of Upper Jhorgule city, and it is looking that marriage might just be in the cards for these tow. Now Dolrick's older sister Dame Zerra is a bit of a wild one, and is quite skilled with a rapier. She seeks at times unlady like entertainment and is quite free spirted and utterly un controlable. Father wonders if his wife (Dolrick's Mother, as well as the mother off all

his brothers and sister) had lived, if she might of turned out more Lady like. The only other family member that lives in the familys Manor House is father's younger brother Father Tully Argyleon (Priest Of Und) . Now Sir Dolrick has just completed his training to become a Knight of Jhorgule under his father, and it is time for him to venture out in the world and prove himself and gain the required three tasks need to become a Knight of the Realm.

That is the basic backstory about the family, and I usually add other details such as friends, servants, little tales of happenings, rumors, mysteries and the like. Everything has the possibility to be a plot lead in many ways. The armed with that, then build the player's character and get them outfitted. Then sit back and talk about their history and backstory getting them thinking of possible adventures and etc.

    Just my 2 cents...

  7. Re: Star Trek’s 10 Cheesiest Classic Creatures

Humans were seeded from that other ancient race if you remember from the Next Generation. That ancient race seed many worlds with their own DNA and it developed into many of the different races that arose, where Humans, Klingons, Romulans were among just a few. I'm guessing we humans are more like this ancient race than the others is all.

  8. Re: Day-to-day life in space

We live in a great time in our history, hopefully within my life time I will live long enough to see Man return to the moon and build semi-permant settlement there. Also I hope to see Man set foot on Mars and begin to explore her. I would also like to see unmanned probes sent to major moons of Jupitor and Saturn as well too. Being that I am currently 43 years old now, and we tend to live on a average at least as old as ones parents did (my father died at 76 and mom at 88). So if I am lucky I will live at least to age 76 or slightly older, so maybe I might get to see the above really happen. I hope too, to inspire my two kids (ages 12, 8) to get involved within the space program in some way as well too.

  10. Hello everyone,

Ok in my efforts to convert my various campaigns to the Hero System, I am planning for my Traveller campaign to use Traveller Hero as well as PAH, and use the ComStar's new era of 1249, plus my campaign will be set in the Verge subsector as well.

Now as I have stated both here on this board and on ComStar's board too, that I plan to use a 'Virus' plot, thus a Plague that created plague Zombies also helped to cause the collapse of civilization within the region of the Verge Subsector in my own homegrown campaign. There will be alot of other elements too, but that is going to be a major one set in the background.

So I am looking for good resource books and this is what I am thinking on getting to add to my resource library for the ideas only, the system I will use will be Hero system:

    - All Flesh Must Be Eaten: Core Rule Book (Revised)

    - All Flesh Must Be Eaten: All Tomorrow's Zombies

    - All Flesh Must Be Eaten: One of the Living - Player's Handbook

    - All Flesh Must Be Eaten: Atlas of the Walking Dead

    - All Flesh Must Be Eaten: Dungeons & Zombies

These (5) books seem to add as many options or details as I can get to make Zombies as cool and different as I can make them. I am getting the; Core Rule Book (Revised) to understand the total system and then adding both One of the Living - Player's Handbook and Atlas of the Walking Dead to add to more details to design and resource value to expand my available resource on the Zombie topic. Then the book All Tomorrow's Zombies is for SciFi campaigning, plus since I am in the process of converting my D&D v3.5 d20 system to FH v5 I felt the fantasy book of Dungeons & Zombies might also be good ones to have too.

So does anyone know of any other good books I might also consider as resource value to add to this flesh eating Zombie resource? What books and why folks?

  11. Re: D&D vs. FantasyHERO vs. Palladium

Wow I missed this debate early on....geeeehhhh

Ok I have been playing D&D now for 32+ years, thus for the last 25+ years I have DM'd my own Home grown campaign of my own making. As to game mechanics I just loved AD&D, and still think that was by far the best of their systems YET!!! over time I switched first to v2.0 and then later to v2.5. I resisted going to 3.0, but later went to 3.5. Now since D$D is about to go to v4.0, I just freaking give up and refuse to rebuy it all over again and relarn all this crap. At 43 I have had it and refuse to reinvent the wheel again.

Now I have had and played Champions since v2 came out, and about 1-1.5 yrs ago my oldest son started to pick up my old gaming books and liked and learned to play Champions. So I said I would buy him the current latest version of Champions v5 Revised and started buying everything. At this point I own almost

all there is out there for v5. I am quite amazed at all of it and view it as a great resource library to build from.

So I have started to relearn the Hero System again, and have to redesign my game mechanics for my worlds. Plus I want to redesign and update my campaign and add or expand on the realm that I call Jhorgule.

A small change to the systems sun:

    System: Allnin

    K2V Orange Luminous

    K2v: General characteristics:

    Size: 75% of Sol

    Mass: 75% of Sol

    Luminosity: 20% of Sol

Snow Line (edge of Cool Zone): 2.2 AU (ish)

Habitable Zone: 0.32-0.64 AU with a Prime Radius of 0.46 AU.

    It is older than Sol.

It would also have an orange color.

    Penn

  13. Re: PAH Campaign brainstorming - Work in progress:

Oh I had thought of that and that is why I call the Red Skinned Humans Allninarr.

I like both of the names of Barsoom and Tharks too...it helps in my mind to give

players a idea what they might be in for. Most of my players know that if I say

"based on" somthing, that means I used something as a resource and designed it

as my own thing from there. Having been RPGing for 32+ years now, and DM/GMing

for like 25+ years I have gotten pretty good at defining what a campaign is like and

giving my players a feel for the flavor I intend to game in.

Thus that is why I kept the planets name as Barsoom, and kept the 4 armed insect

like humanoids called Tharks too. By the way I did say it was a cross of these three

genres: Traveller Herp, Post Apocalyptic Hero, and Fantasy Hero too.

Thus you will have long swords, radium bullets and an air ships too...oh my!!! It is

just in my version of Barsoom there is alot more Water, and Life.

I also have reasons for working out the whole system and the rest of the orbits

have a place for the players to explore/investigate within the campaign. There is

a ancient network of "Site to Site" transportation rings, some located in the most

ancient abandoned(long forgotten) Allninarr cities to be rediscovered.

Remember some of the Ancient technology is still working like the Atmosphere

Processing Plants, and multiple other smattering of techs too. Some tech the

Allnin can still reproduce and others they can not. Yes there are "flyers" aka

Air Ships, and Air Barges that the Allninarr maintain and still use. Plus a host

of all types of weapons, but everyone carrys a Long Sword, and Dagger dude!

  14. Hello everyone,

Ok here is what I am doing to design/redesign my Gamma World D20 campaign,

and using PAH Hero plus Traveller Hero, and some Translight Playtest data. For

me as a old Traveller GM/Player, I need to have a whole solar system worked

out first so I can get lots of other details into my campaign. This is a work in

progress and here is the basics to begin with and I will add more details as I

work on them. I am always looking for good ideas, and this will use the

Hero System and include Traveller Hero, Post Apocalypyic Hero, and Fantasy

Hero, and yes it will be a mix of Tech and Magic as well too. All players will be

of the race of Allninarr (red skinned humans).

    System Notes:

The Allnin system main orbit is #2 that is referrred to as

Allnin-primeand is the home to 2 intelligent lifeforms that dwell

there. The Allninarr(red skinned humanoids) and Tharks(4 armed

green skinned insectoid/humanoids). These two races appear to be

at war with one another. The Allninarr have 20+ major City

States scattered accross the planet and the Tharks have hidden

underground cities or are nomadic in nature. There are ruined and

abandoned cities skattered about the planet and it would appear

that they are extremely old and might have been

Allnin cities. All the cities are extremly ancient, built of

carved Red Granite (extremely hard) and built around (ancient

Atmosphere Processing plants). Their powersource is Geo-thermal

and tied into the planet's core.

The 2nd orbit world (Barsoom) as called by the inhabitants

appears to be a dieing world, with it's water disapearing. All

the seas have shrunk to small bodies of water(shallow seas)and

large lakes. Also many rivers dry up seasonially, and

the poles have small ice caps that mostly melt every spring.

The planet still has running water and small sea and rivers.

Now the Oxygen level is thin but still breathable for

    standard humans.

Life of the 2nd planet (Barsoom) consists of a kind of algie

growing in the oceans as well as aquatic creatures as well too.

There are many deserts, but there is a kind of ferns and

red grasses growing in the non-desert areas. Also they hava

a kind of bamboo bush/tree that is also common. If cut and

dried correctly, it hardens solid and becomes almost as hard

as steel. Also there are many plants with huge root systems

undergrown. The planet is honey combed with underground cavarns,

and it is inside such areas that the Tharks make their hidden

    cities.

It would appear that both cultures had much higher Tech at

one point, but with prolonged warfare and loss of resources the

tech level has slipped backwards. One can find a mixture of

techs from clubs, swords, guns, to energy weapons. It would

appear that there had been a major war fought on this planet

and the details are not known. The Allninarr do not have any

    space flight possiblities, but they do have knowledge of;

air ships, glidders, and some older gravatic speeders

and hover ships. Both races have knowledeg of the other

orbits and know them by their names, but seems to be

wrapped into their faith/religion. Also it would seem that

both races have knowlegde of the Arcane arts as well.

NOTE: Barsoom is NOT Mars, nor is it Barsoom as per

Edger Burroughs (John Carter on Mars) design,

this world is loosely based off that world only.

The world could be set in both a Traveller Hero

and/or Post Apocalyptic Hero ...aka...Gamma World.

The system was designed using Translight playtest system.

NOTE 2: This is what I am designing for my new PAH campaign

that is replacing my long lived Gamma World campaign.

The Allninarr are really gene altered Humans that

travelled to this system to colonize the system, and

found the Tharks race had developed here on Allnin-Prime.

  15. Re: Post-Apocalyptic Hero

Hmmmm I directly relate Post Apoc Hero to Gamma World setting!

As I said in another thread I think I will use the Barsoom setting as my base world setting and then expand on it a bit more to add more life and other elements. I would add more water to the world, but most of the cities would be still high and dry because the oceans would have greatly shrunk in size.

I would also add some rather nasty critters in to its reaming oceans and some other animals as well. I also like the addition of a few more plants as well too. Also I would think to explain the dieing planet, as a High tech Weapons use, and Life Draining Magic use of sorts. So swords, guns and magic...oh my!!!

  16. Re: Environment for Post Apoc settings

Hey guys I was thinking about this whole issue, as one of my conversion projects of Gamma World to PAH, and rebuilding my campaign setting, I was considering using Barsoom as my base and changing it somemore.

I would add a bit more life to my version of the planet Barsoom add some other elements as well too!

  17. Re: Traveller Hero - the soon to be GONE!

I hope to see more Traveller based Hero products as well too, the more the better for us all. I really would love to see someone come up with their own "Space based" Hero and

write up a system and etc. If I was a better writer I would try, but I am not up to that kinda job. My hat's off to Steve L and crew!!!

Just cut out alot of the 'shipper crap' or 'mello dramma' and you would have a true SciFi show!!!

It's both a Star HERO and Post-Apocalyptic HERO campaign, in that

there's both interplanetary and interstellar travel (as well as ship-to-ship war-

fare), and the remnants of a once-powerful civilization doing its best to sur-

vive the Holocaust that wiped out billions of their fellow humans.

Keep in mind that we still have 18 months to produce more Traveller Hero works - I'm in the middle of layout work for GAS 3 through 8, Kevin is chomping at the bit for Grand Fleet THero, and I have several items planned of my own to do.

And yes, if sales are good, we hope that Steve L will give ComStar a license for Far Avalon Hero, their space-based game in the works. Polaris has already been involved in those discussions with Steve. :)

Polaris has said in another thread that all of the Traveller items slated for after the Traveller license expires will be repurposed for the Far Avalon setting.

So stay tuned, it's a setback but not a defeat :)

The Astounding Hero Tales review will be in December sometime, but there is one planned.

There are no more currently planned books for the Pulp Hero line, apparently everything after the core book sold very poorly. Unless something has changed since the last time I bugged Darren and Steve about more Pulp Books . . .

If you really need a Pulp Fix the Hero Plus Adventure PDFs are almost all Pulp Hero adventures.
