  3. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? MZ2 mentioned the idea of linking it to STR. That sounds like a perfect way to do it. I will take a look at the link. I'm kinda sure I read in the BBB that you could link a greater power to a smaller one, which I think I'd have to do given the fact that even at a low 1d6 level the entangle would be many more points then the actual STR. I think the character's STR is low, around 10 or so. Any thoughts on that? =)
  4. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? I added in the +1/4 for works vs. EGO not STR. The entire thing is BOECV +1 and 'Works vs. Ego Not STR for +1/4, so all together it'd probably be +1 1/4, but I'd be willing to go with just +1 since you don't see many stand alone advantages between +1 and +2.
  5. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? Um, wait. =? Why the round about way of doing it then? Why the need to stick a +1 modifier that does nothing essentially to the power other then make it more expensive to get a power that works vs. EGO and not STR? If that was the case why not just simply make Works vs. EGO not STR a +1 1/4 advantage when applied to Entangles? =?
  6. Re: A good character addition to a team, or just too 'wierd' for a team? Haven't 'quite' nailed that down yet. More then likely some kind of energy based force field that based around something like high tech force fields, and not just like a fire field or something of the like. Energy fields would be a likely way to stop/contain the thing. That's what it arrived in, the small ship containing it had it englobed by small energy field so if it was activated prematurely it wouldn't accidentally eat through the hull. The assimilation power is really just a way for the probe to recharge its endurance reserve in a dramatic way. Like say the team defeats a bunch of gang members/drug smugglers at the docks, and the probe after a protracted battle sloshes it's form over one of the nearby transport vans and eats the thing, or it tears up a section of roadway of eats through a fence, etc, etc. Mostly I've recently become interested in characters who's powers run off endurance reserves with novel ways to recharge them after a battle. Like a psionic that recharges by drawing power from his defeated foes, etc, etc. That sort of thing.
  7. Re: A good character addition to a team, or just too 'wierd' for a team? Thanks much for the input fellows. It really helps me gel this character. =) Yes, this was my concern as well. The berserk is something that I felt was moderately appropriate to the character given the damage he sustained in the crash. Though it's one of those things I intend to buy off with experience eventually through play. The idea of an occasional pulse of electricity that kicks the alien's O.S. into a sort of safe mode where the safe mode is 'consume anything nearby you.' seemed like a good idea to me, and since it has such a low frequency of happening, I thought it might make an interesting complication for the character and might be something the team or the alien itself could lament over, or at least turn to analyze. I'd eventually intended have the alien's self repair systems slowly eliminate that. If you think the berserk may be a bit too severe, could you recommend another disadvantage that might be tied in with his electrical encounter that might cause similar difficulties? I'm not looking for anything crippling, just something that will cause him some trouble until it is bought off. I'd originally given him 2x's stun from electricity but that seemed so common to me and I was really looking to make this guy unique even down to the disadvantages if I could. =) As to why he'd associate with others. I'd had it in my mind that he was originally sent to earth to survey it. So even though he doesn't remember that, I thought the rather broad based limitation 'Scientific Curiosity' would cover a good reason why he might stick around on a team of paranormals, some of which who's powers are bound to clearly defy explanation and who, being PC's, are usually running into other paranormals and all sorts of evil plots, magic, etc, etc. Perhaps though, I might need a narrower focused psych limitation? Any suggestions would be helpful. =) Thanks for the input, Sim. You and Doug seem to be on the same page as to the berserk. If I can't find another type of disadvantage to replace it I will likely reduce it to enraged to simulate a more controlled 'safe mode' but still a dangerous one if he tries to 'dissolve' one of the bad guys while kicked into safe mode. =)
  8. Okay, I've got another one I've worked up, and I'm wondering if it's just too 'odd'. Any critiques are appreciated. In short, the character is a large amorphous blob, made of nanobots. It's roughly the size of a man. It's a highly advanced alien probe that made a bad crash landing on earth, and most of it's memory banks and some of it's physical structure was damaged. When it begins the game it only has a few abilities related mostly to it's physical body or it's raw computational speed. It can 'eat' anything by sort of using it's body to engulf and dissolve the object in question it can also analyze the object to learn about it, which it typically does in any given circumstance 'first'. It has few skills to illustrate that's it's slowly learning. It's original memory files and skills are 'slowly' being reconstructed from partially corrupted original files in the computer's background (think subconscious), the same goes for it's structural damage. Currently it's self repair system was the worst damage and is being worked on. Currently it can only self repair very, very slowly (it's REC stat/month like a normal character). It's a bit clueless about earth and it's technology and create problems for itself and it's teamates. It's also a bit of a cold fish as it doesn't understand human emotions (Psych lim: Stoic). It currently has a fatal flaw. Upon it's crash landing, it destroyed an electrical power substation. The massive electrical discharge caused a minor damage to it. If it's hit and stunned by another electrical attack it has a small chance to go berserk, a sort of 'safe mode' where it simply attacks anything moving or not until it's system reboots. Once again, thoughts and suggestions appreciated. =) Statistics 10/30STR[00]; 16DEX[18]; 20CON [20]; 11BOD[02]; 20INT[10]; 10EGO[00]; 12PRE[02]; 10COM[00]; 13PD[11]; 9ED[05]; 3SPD[04]; 6REC[00]; 0END[-20]; 45STN[19] [71 points] 0 END on STR [5] 0 END on 6" Running [6] 0 END on 2" Swimming [1] Fully Resistant Defenses [11] Armour 4 rPD/4 rED [12] Nanobot Life Support [43] points -10 Self Contained Breathing -03 No Need to Eat/Drink (Can Eat Anything) -01 Sleep 8 Hours/Week -09 Safe in Low Pressure/Vac, High Pressure, High Radiation, Intense Cold, Intense Heat -20 Immune to Bacteria/Poisons Endurance Reserve: REC 1, END 90; only recovers when dissolving (-1/4) [10] 43 MP: Nanomorphic Abilities u1 Surface Adhesion: Clinging at STR; Cannot Resist KB (-1/4), Costs END -1/2, Requires Stretching Tricks roll (-1/2) u2 Squeezing Through: Desolidification; Cannot move through solids (-1/2), Does not protect vs. attacks (-1) u1 Assimilation: 1 pip RKA; No Range (-1/2), No KB (-1/4), NND +1; Continuous +1; Does Body +1; 0 END (+1/2) u2 Whole Mass Extension: Stretching: 8" 3x's END (-1) u1 Mass Engulfment: +20 STR; No Effect Figured Chars (-1/4); Only for Grapples/Squeezes (-1/2) [11] u2 Sustained Computational Mode -Increased Arc of Perception (360 Degree) [5] -Eidetic Memory [5] -Absolute Time Sense [3] -Lightning Calculator [3] -Speed Reading/1 [4] u1 Matter Analyze (Detect: Physical Objects (INT+7 Roll): Discriminatory; Analyze, Rapidx10); Concentrate 0 DCV throughout (-1); Uses END -1/2 [30] u2 Read Data (Detect: Data In A Computer (INT+8 Roll), (Radio Group): Discriminatory; Analyze; Rapidx10,000; Concentrate 0 DCV throughout (-1); Uses END -1/2 [40] +1 CSL with HtH [5] +1 OSL [10] Language: English (North American - Fluent) [1] 3 Jack of All Trades 3 Linguist 3 Scholar 3 Scientist 3 Traveler 3 Stealth 12- 1 Mimicry 8- 1 Disguise 8- Total: 250 points DISADVANTAGES + 100 Berserk when Stunned by an Electrical Attack (Uncommon, Go 8-, Recover 14-) [10] DF: Amorphous off-white colored blob! 9. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? I dunno. I think that gets into multiple attacks or something. Hyper mentioned it a few posts back, so I don't recall. The idea about using a punch or a kick as a special effect, I'm not so sure about. *sighs* this power seems 'hopelessly' complicated to simulate and all I wanna do is use my martial arts on a foe in combat and have the entangle go off when I hit them. Basically I feel like I'm having to bend over backwards to get the mechanics to simulate a simple action. Entangle them if the character touches them, regardless if it's a left hook to their jaw or a light touch on their shoulder. Isn't their some elegant way to do that without having the power look like a complete mess mechanically? =?

  11. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? My idea was to make a paranormal with the mentally derived ability to cause the pleasure centers of a target's brain to flare up uncontrollably when it touched the target. The touch could be an actual touch, or a flying fist or kick directly into their gut during a combat for instance. The mental ability is more of the power's special effect, since it's no range and only hits if the paranormal hits them in combat (or OCV based). They would register as a psi and possibly a mutant if they were one, but beyond that, that would be hit for the mentalist flavor. I'm still not convinced about the must have BOECV to have it based on EGO. As it stands it would make it a useless advantage. Only there for the sole purpose of making the power more expensive with zero benefit. They say that a disadvantage that's not really a disadvantage isn't worth any points. Well, sauce of the goose is sauce for the gander, isn't it? While I guess I can see how it might be a problem, how is said character hitting a thug with this power and putting them on the ground any different then the team blaster hitting the same thug with it's 10D EB. It's a similar result isn't it?
  12. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese?
  13. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? Yeah I think that's waaay to high to work in the campaign, sadly. =/ And is that BOECV thing an official rule? I had it as BOECV originally then I realized that I'd basically made it no range and completely dependent on it landing if I successfully attacked a target in hand to hand, which would basically take the form of a punch or kick. Didn't realize about the MPA thingee. Figured I could just use it with a punch or kick that landed. That kinda bites. Can I designate it as a trigger that it happens when the character lands a punch or kick? =?
  14. Re: Decent Character or Too Much Cheese? MPA? And I thought briefly about a damage shield, but with the changes to Damage shields in 5th, I think it's far out of my range in terms or point cap isn't it? =?
  15. I'm building a character in what I consider to be a non-traditional way. Basically a minor psionic powered individual that can fight very well. Its main ability is its combat training. It's power is the ability to hyper stimulate a target's pleasure centers. Basically a touch or punch allows the character to send a target into a intense session of bliss. I built this as an ego entangle, to represent it takes a highly disciplined will to shrug off it's effects and keep moving and ignore the sensations. It's for a 250 point game, with a standard 10 DC/50 AP cap so unfortunately I think that means it's power can be too high, correct? I built it as Entangle 2d6, 2 DEF; Works vs. EGO not STR +1/4, Transparent to Physical Attacks +1/4, Feedback +1/2, 0 End +1/2, Mental Defense adds to EGO -1/2, No Range -1/2, Cannot form Barriers -1/4. (Active: 50 points, Real: 22 points) Would this be useless as a power, for the campaign power level, or can it be put to some good use? Other stats are: 12 STR, 18 DEX, 18 CON, 12 BOD, 11 INT 15 EGO 12 PRE 12 COM 8 PD 5 ED 4 SPD 10 REC 40 END 40 STN Combat Luck (3/3) 'Just a Scratch' Damage Reduction 25% Physical: Stun Only (-1/2) 'Built Tonka Tough!' Combat Sense 11- 'I can beat you blindfolded!' Find Weakness 11- with Martial Arts; Can only Reduce Defenses of Target by Half (-1) 'That hurt? Good.' The rest of it's points would be spent on Martial Arts Moves and Related combat and crimefighting skills. Bad idea? Good idea? Too much Cheese? Suggestions? Changes? Any help is appreciated. =)
  16. Re: Making the PC's PAY!! (Dearly) The last game I played in skipped over a lot of 'how to meet the bills' kinda thing simply because being crime fighters was such a full time freakin' job. We had: 1. One character that worked for Mars Needs Pizza Shop. 2. Another that worked part time in a sporting good's store while attending college. 3. Another that worked at a near campus gym where a lot of the college kids came to work out and such (again another college student). 4. Another that worked as a research scientist at a facility and could kind of make his own hours. 5. Another that worked as a freelance crime reporter for a small china-town centric newspaper. 6. Another that was working as a minor talent in a paranormal wrestling circuit (our brick). 7. Another that was a Paramedic (ambulance driver) at the local hospital. 8. And another that was jobless by means of his powers. (A shapeshifter that grew up on a reservation. He was never much in the way or need for money, or shelter perse). He spent most of his time out of the city proper, masquerading as a horse. Of all of us, I think our Energy Blaster/Paramedic was the only one that actually lost his job for too many missed days. I think the sporting goods worker may have lost her job as well, but I can't remember if it was because of absenteeism or because her boss was deeply in debt to a loan shark and needed to get out of town 'QUICK'. I'm hazy on that. All in all, our GM played fast and loose with our civilian lives, to keep things interesting. When we were swept away by a dimensional rift and worked to escape a world taken over by lovecraftian style horrors, when we got back several weeks had past in our home dimension where only a few days had past for us subjectively. Our Sporting goods store worker bemoaned the fact that she'd missed her finals and likely failed her classes. But she was able to appeal to her instructors and able to take her finals, or something of that nature. As I said it was very episodic. Bad stuff would happen, but we'd always find a way to make it mostly right or do damage control at the end of the episode. 'Usually'.
  17. Re: Defying Gravity TV Series I thought it was actually a pretty interesting show. Characters and plot didn't seem boring or anything. I'd tune in next sunday to watch another episode.
  18. Re: Defying Gravity TV Series Defying Gravity. The best show I never heard about? Seriously, maybe I've had my head in the sand, but I'm usually pretty up on upcoming shows. This one. Not even a peep until just 'now'.
  19. Re: Slow Time power question. I think I have a modest build. Not sure about it though. Critiques and Suggestions for Improvements welcome: Fire and Forget Time Dilation: 2d6 Drain vs. DEX, SPD, and Movement Powers all at once (+3/4), 1/2 END (+1/4); Ranged (+1/2). 50 points total. Sustained Time Dilation: 4d6 Suppress vs. DEX, SPD, and Movement Powers all at once (+3/4), 1/2 END (+1/4); Ranged (+1/2). 50 points total.
  20. Re: Slow Time power question. Looking at it.. seems terribly expensive. I was looking to drain or perhaps suppress SPD, DEX, and Movement Powers, all at once. Might not be doable. Perhaps, though, I'll have to see.
  21. I've seen this power produced in Champions before, one of them in the super powers data base. My question is, it seems to be just a speed drain. I'm wondering how realistic a speed drain is. It wouldn't make the target any easier to hit right? They'd still have their DCV, and they'd still be able to move their full combat move in inches even at reduced phases, right? So if you used the power on a speedster with CV 10, 20" of movement and Speed 8, if you reduced his speed to 3, he's still only be able to act on 3 phases but still with full CV and still able to move 20" per phase, right?
  22. Re: Waking up with super powers 1. Keep it a closely guarded secret due to the nature of what I'd want to develop. 2. In my youth, I'd have said flight, invulnerability, speed, etc. Now a days it's likely to be a suite of healing and protection abilities, things that would allow me to repair damage/maladies/ageing to people and objects, and to generate force fields. 3. Anything destructive, I'd have a problem with. Again, in my youth, I was much less interested in healing and protection. 4. I wouldn't care who had abilities. As long as I had mine, and you stay out of my way, we'd get along just fine. 5. I'd only tell my family and my closest, personal friends. The people I trust with my life. 6. I don't see my life changing, but it'd let me do things that I'd really like to do. Helping the aged, the sick, the dying. Protecting my friends, and family, etc. I'm sure I'd be outed 'eventually'. I'd want to help people. Essentially, most of my champion's characters now a days are built around healing, protection and pacification. In my youth, they were more combat, smash, flight, etc, etc. =)
  23. Re: Microtransaction (Cryptic Bucks) Info Up *froths at the mouth and makes hasty statements based on little or no evidence* I kid! I kid! XD
  24. Re: Kids, don't try this in a world with super-powers! Only the most 'brutish' of spirits would have a problem with free publicity and self promotion by proxy. XD *snicker*
