The Mummy's Curse(s)!

One of our PC groups is rushing against the clock to find the grave robbers that desecrated the tomb of a powerful (and evil) Egyptian sorcerer and would be god king. The wizard is now an Undead, a powerful Mummy with potent magical abilities and, being impatient as well as evil, is going to unleash a few curses on the heroes' city to motivate them to speed up their investigation.

I'm drawing a blank on the nature of the curses though. I have the biblical plagues released on Egypt by Moses stuck in my head and its created a bit of a mental block. And those don't really fit, IMO given their source. Does anyone have any suggestions for good city wide curses? Nothing -too- destructive but bad enough to light a fire under the heroes to stop Amon-ho-tep?

Hmmm...

A sandstorm maybe?

Or maybe all the cats in the city either flee town or head towards Amon-ho-tep's lair?

Or technology slowly stops working, radiating out from the location where he placed the curse?

All the other mummies in the local museum come to life and begin slowly wrecking havoc?

Or everyone begins speaking Ancient Egyptian, but not understanding it?

The city begins slowly transforming into an Egyptian type climate/setting? Rivers flood, sand begins creeping out of the ground, the temperature rises, etc...

Citizens begin to feel compelled to build as giant pyramid in Amon-ho-tep's honour in a central park?

And, of course, everyone begins to "Walk like an Egyptian"?

Egyptian poisonous creepy-crawlies infesting the city. Multiplying asps and scorpions. The asps in the Nile region and the North African scorpion are lethal if their venom isn't treated promptly. Combine that with the panic just the sight of those things can cause people, and it won't take many incidents to start a full panic.

A languishing sickness comes to pass

For beasts of burden, camel ,horse and ass

At first this may not seem like much - the camels at the zoo get sluggish?. Then the curse strikes at the real beasts of burden of a modern city - the machines, especially the automobiles. Trucks in particular fail to start or mysteriously stop while in motion, then start again for a while, then once again have to "rest." Conveyor belts and other things that move cargo around - "beasts of burden" - begin malfunctioning. Reveal this in a supermarket - automatic doors fail to open, the cashier's conveyor belts stop..

The River begins to rot and stink,

All water becomes unfit to drink

The city's water supply is tainted, perhaps with algae. Not poisoned, and won't make you sick - it just smells bad, tastes worse, and maybe even is the wrong color.

Hey, what's wrong with my palindromedary?

Here ye now my curses four

Your failure will cause misery to pour

The air you breathe small smell as my tomb.

This will be the first sign of your doom.

When all you drink tastes like ash.

Know your hopes will soon be dashed.

When your vision begins to dim.

Your suffering I near the brim.

Then as your flesh begins to rot,

you'll rue the day you did not deliver what I sought.
