Re: Fantasy Web Resources

Either that, or they've been into roleplaying/fantasy literature so long they haven't got a life outside of it :)

Besides it's not JUST and Elvish name - it's an OSTENTATIOUS Elvish name, which is so much more pathetic....

:P

Of course, now that the movies have come out - it's "trendy" [sigh]

Oh well...

Anyhow, I've got a heap of scifi ones too, which I'll nip over to the Star Hero forum and post.

Enjoy being trendy while it lasts. The Elvish name gig will be relegated back into the "geek" category sonner than you'd like. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that...

Re: Fantasy Web Resources

As a bit of a net-geek too (and even though this is OT) - I highly recommend a unique, easily remembered, and preferably easily spelt/pronounced online name.

Because it means my works are easy to google/search for.

It's kinda a cheap version of trademark...,

I have a very eclectic group of links under my Gaming Resources favorites (and little recollection of from whom I first discovered them...):

For names, all sorts: Kate Monk's Onomastikon (although the original disappeared, this mirror is desparately useful in any Fantasy game)

For Victorian-style magick: The Arbatel of Magick (referenced by Dee, Waite, etc.)

Historical city maps: Dutch City maps from the Blaeu Atlas

Indian mythology: Indian Mythology, Facts

Oriental Emperors: Indian, Chinese, & Japanese Emperors

Brief bit on Japanese Taoism: Onmyodo

Some obscure mythology: Canaanite/Ugaritic Mythology FAQ

Re: Fantasy Web Resources

That last post took forever to load, so instead of editing I'll just add here: the Arbatel of Magick combines very well with Hermetic alchemy if you're looking for a pseudo-historical magical system (say, Elizabethan through Victorian eras).

Following some of the links on Ardalambion also leads to some cool sites. One of my favorites being:

The Language Construction Kit

Googling up "Model Languages", "Constructed Languages", "Conlang", or "Glossopoiesis" also gives some interesting resources.

Re: Fantasy Web Resources

Also googling "harn", "harnworld" and "harnmaster" - even before Harn became a roleplaying game and was just a generic resource, the material was wonderful for Dark Age campaigns. Especially if you want realism - there's lots of fan sites out there.

PS - by Dark Age, I mean AD 500-1100, and not "gritty melodramatic noir fantasy", although it could be...

Re: Lightray needs to better organize his Favorites folders...

The Encyclopedia Mythica, a very broad quick-reference to mythology and folklore from around the world.

AutoREALM, a detailed free fantasy mapping program for interiors and exteriors, with optional square or hex grid overlay.

Outside of the published FH Grimoires, the online Ultimate Grimoire is probably the best source for HERO 5E magic spells and items, and spell system design advice.

"Surbrook's Stuff" has a large collection of creatures from many sources suitable for fantasy gaming, in the section on Creatures From Myth And Legend.

When I have more time I'll see what else I can come up with. :)
