Re: [Campaign Log] Sophia's Barbarians

The purposes of these creatures are often unfathomable. Their thought processes can be totally alien to mere mortals.

On in other words the GM never really has to have a logical reason. (Which is pretty handy if you are ever stumped for an idea).

Yes, but you should assume the creature has its reasons, even if the GM does not (yet) know what they are. The GM might later think of some interesting logical repurcussions that would have been foreseen by the creature at the time.

Re: [Campaign Log] Sophia's Barbarians

Indeed.

In the case of Sophia's task in the most recent game, the spirit who requested it knew the craftsman she requested the oar from, and missed hearing his stories, now that he was dead and all. So he made Sophia request an oar from him and sit and watch the process, so that he could sit with her and listen to the man's stories.

Re: [Campaign Log] Sophia's Barbarians

Nothing' date=' yet. We agreed not to have the game this week, to maximize the laziness of our respective vacations. Next update will be next Sunday night.[/quote']

I'm glad to have a break, so hopefully I can finish my nano, but I kinda miss Sophia already.

Sad, I know!

Re: [Campaign Log] Sophia's Barbarians

Josh asked me to write it up this week.

The 24th Day of Founder's Month

Sophia and her Barbarians go looking for another job. They check in at the Bawling Bard, where they're told there are no jobs to be had for mercenaries in Elweir, for the time being. They head to the Abyzinian Nights and see a man there who's come from Freehold in Khor. He's hired some bodyguards and is being loud, but that generates nothing of interest. The bartender at the Abyzinian Nights has no further information about the murders of the Abyzinians, nor any jobs.

They head back to the house, where Sophia's Master has a job for them. He asks them to track down Akivasha (who Sophia recognizes as a fellow necromancer) and kill the man she's guarding, to free her from an obligation.

Sophia summons her Knower of Secrets and asks him to track down Akivasha. It tracks her to Underfoot Path, which the group learns is underneath Low Town. They pay for passage down, and wander until one of the subjects of The Prince of Underfoot Path finds them. They pay five coins for safe passage, and finally locate Akivasha and the man she's guarding, who they've been ordered to kill. They're in a room with a dozen skeletons guarding them, along with a wraithlike creature summoned by the necromancer.

The Barbarians and their own supernatural reinforcements charge in, but are pressed close to the door by the swarming skeletons. Sophia is left at the doorway. Kessa finds that using the blunt half of her axe is far more effective against skeletons, and uses it for the remainder of combat.

Once the path is cleared enough for Sophia, she gets in and casts a spell on the man being protected, "Posess the Living." She orders him to kill himself, and he starts to cut himself. Akivasha knocks him out to prevent further harm.

Eventually, Sophia makes her way closer, and gets a few bolts into the fallen protectee before being attacked and deeply wounded by a skeleton. Kessa fells that skeleton the next phase, then takes out the last one between her and Akivasha. Once that's out of the way, she charges Akivasha with her bare fists and takes her down, just after Carmen takes out the last of the skeletons. Carmen then kills the man they were sent to kill.

Kessa binds Sophia's wounds, and Akivasha gets up and thanks them for their assistance. She explains she had to protect him from whoever was after him, and hired Sophia and her Barbarians to take care of it. She pays them 40 coins for their help.

Did I forget anything?

Re: [Campaign Log] Sophia's Barbarians

This entry was written by Eoywin. I gave it a cursory glance to mostly correct names of places and people.

The 25th Day of Founders Month

The evening started out with Sophia informing Kessa and Carmen that they were going to go to the graveyard with her. The three headed to the graveyard, and while Kessa and Carmen dug a large hole in the graveyard dirt, Sophia stripped completely.

She explained to them that she needed to be buried in the dirt to replenish her magic. They buried her in the dirt, and guarded her for the several hours she needed to take her 'dirt bath'. At one point, a dog came into the graveyard, finding the freshly dug up dirt to be interesting. Sophia told her guardians to shoo it away, or kill it if need be. Carmen tries to kick the dog, but misses, and ends up getting bit by the dog. Kessa hit the dog with the side of her axe and manages to frighten it away.

After the 'dirt bath' they head back to their home, where Sophia requests a favor. She manages to contact a supernatural being who offered her a favor, telling her that it would repay her debt and more. She is told that she needs to pursue the Dagger of Khor.

In the morning, she explains to Kessa and Carmen that they are going to be doing and they head to Gibberish. They go to Aissa T'numbra's shop only to find it closed. They head next to the Abysinian Night to ask the barkeep if he has any information about the dagger. They are told that a Khorian named Grothgar is also looking for the dagger. Aissa T'numbra's shop is open when they go back, and she tells them about a contest that the Underfoot Prince is having and that a valuable dagger is being offered as the prize. She is unsure if it is the dagger they are looking for.

Sophia decides that it is probably best if she summons her Knower of Secrets, who tells them that the dagger is evil and brings bad fortune. They get a little information more information about the dagger, that it is told to be the weapon who killed the Black Magician, Vylessa, who had wormed her way into a position of power on Khor. They also learn that the dagger had guardians who guarded it.

They headed to underfoot path, and took the same way as they had before. When they came upon the prince's subject, they asked if there was a contest going on. They were told yes, so Sophia signed them up.

After leaving underfoot path, they decided to visit the Bawling Bard, since the entry fee was very expensive. She had no news of work for them, but told them some things about the contest that they already knew.

They went back to Gibberish and the Absyizian night, where Kessa noticed the man, Grothgar. She stopped him, and told him that Sophia wanted to talk to him. They went inside, and they found that he was one of the dagger's guardians, and he told them more about how evil this dagger was. He also told them that he had tried to get a group into the contest, but they had taken his money and run. Sophia told him that they were entered in the contest and when they won, she would give him the dagger to take back to Khor. Grothgar explains a bit more about the history of the dagger. The dagger, when kept out of the ceremonial halls of Freehold, begins to bring ill fortune to all in the area it belongs. The dagger also cannot be destroyed and cannot be thrown away no matter how hard one might try.

Since there was no work, Sophia decided she needed a couple more skeletons for this contest, so they went grave robbing in Lowtown.

The 26th of Founder's Month

The next day, they waited for the Prince's messenger's to come fetch them for the contest. They did so rather early in the day, leading them to the contest. There are a total of 14 groups of people. One of the groups included Akivasha, who they had already fought. The Underfoot Prince appeared, and explained that there were going to be three different tasks, and what the prizes were going to be. Besides the dagger, the winners would get a portion of the entry fee.

Sophia, Kessa, and Carmen were led to a room, where they waited until they were called to the first task. While they were waiting, Sophia summoned her Knower of Secrets to find out some information about their opponents, but he did not know much besides that there were other magic users in the contest. After that, Sophia summoned a revanent, telling him that he could only kill their opponents.

They were summoned for the first task, and lead to a hallway where they were told that all they needed to do was fetch a marked coin.

The revenant took off to the chamber, with the others following along. When they got to the doorway they saw 4 huge spiders sitting on giant spider webs. The revenant did not have much luck against the spider he attacked, getting stuck in a sticky goo.

Kessa and Carmen went into the fray, while Sophia held back, summoning all four skeletons.

Most of the skeletons ended up gooed by the end of the battle, and Carmen was bit and poisoned by one of the spiders. Kessa caused the most damage, killing quite a few of the spiders.

Afterwards, Kessa stopped the spread of the poison for Carmen while Sophia located the coin. They return to the man in the hallway who tells them 'congratulations' and some leads them out.

They head back to their home, where Sophia summons her Knower of Secrets, who tells them that 3 teams are out because they died, and 3 teams lost members in the task. He also told them it would be several days until they were summoned for the next task.

Re: [Campaign Log] Sophia's Barbarians

Hopefully that we win the contest, return the dagger, and it goes back where it belongs.

I was pretty proud of myself for remembering that I get to do a Healing check on each wound, so got to heal Carmen for the wound inflicted in draining the poison. Josh was kind of annoyed at me for that. Heh.
